    For those who think this was a waste of time. I would say you have raised awareness. I work in the City and so many colleagues were not aware of the issue. Never forget the media in this country have one narrative. Don’t pump slurry on the paths. The support from around the country is important.

    FYI the estate tax threshold here in America is currently around $13.6 million, and double that for married couples. Not that we get everything right, but it does give some perspective on how brutally low your proposed threshold is.

      JC is exactly the sort of person who has eaten up family farms over decades to tax dodge at the expense of the families of those farmers who didn't get their act together and have sustainable succession plans in place. Why on earth do you think that small farms have been decimated despite the tax relief? Clueless.

      I was also so pleased by the conduct of the protestors. I prayed everyone would behave themselves and things wouldn't get out of hand, and I think they completely outdid themselves. I know so many people who have much more respect for farmers having seen this, and how focused but civil they were. It would've been so easy for something silly to happen and distract from the focus. I'm glad the policy noticed too!

    That got me choked up. Coming from dairy and Ag college. I know what farming means to those involved. All we ever had was overdrafts and bills. But it is a great way of life. Lovely to grow up in and be part of. It isn't just a job. It is a lot more than that. You become engrossed in it. When you have stock, particularly cows, you know every animal. Less so now with massive herds. But back then we did. Every farmer worth his sort, throws their life into it. And that has been generational for many lifetimes. Then one idiot man, who claims to be from a rural area and knows country people, yeh right. And this spiteful lying woman, who is in the job under false pretences. They can throw all this away with a stroke of a pen and can't see any problem with it. What sort of system let's two people destroy the lives of tens of thousands. That isn't democracy it is dictatorship. Starmer is operating from the same play book as Putin. The whole of Britain should fight these pair. The Labour party should oust them. This has put the Labour party out in the cold for a very long time to come. And is doing untold damage to everything British.

    This was interesting insight into the events, thank you for sharing your experience Rich! I only saw pics, but did think the NFU event looked very well planned for such short notice, credit to them.
    This is such an emotional, worrying topic, so I understand people getting upset and shouty, but its far nicer to hear people's balanced thoughts, For the jacket, I can imagine this may be so that people are viewed as representing their own person, not a group: I could see an issue if someone walked into parliament or a gov building, in a flag jacket and did something terrible or just disrespectful and that wouldn't look right, so without knowing yourself and your intentions I understand asking you to remove it (hopefully you were able to reclaim it for your trip home!)
    I agree with you that labour may not scrap the plan, many reasons not to I suppose, but I would very much like to see the cap raised. If they're truly after the wealthy, the Dysons, and the landhoarders, then even a £5M cap would protect more small farms than the £1-3M does.
    Again, thanks for such a great account of the events. I hope it felt worthwhile! x

I was there yesterday and really wanted to talk to you as I always follow what you do, but I couldn’t get to you as there was so many people there ( just for the record I’m a farm worker for a large estate and have some idea on how it is run)

      Olly and Clarkson both have interest in farming, so for that I'm happy and grateful, even if it isn't as whole and genuine as true farmers like Rich. There are other ways to penalise wealth than a broad industry tax.
      If penalising Dyson's and Clarkson's means unintended or misdirected harm to small farmers, then it's not worth doing. Gov should've tried to find a better way.

    Watching the news about the rally, the majority interviewed didn't seem to know how the changes would actually impact their farm. A lot of incorrect assumptions were made. The Government handled the announcement of the changes poorly and didn't give people the information they needed, ultimately causing unnecessary distress.
    The reliance on tax free succession of land and property to prop up small and family farming in this country has been a disaster for the industry. Ironically this policy appears to be the wake up call needed to stop the rot.

    • @Jwp714i

    • @jeorjina
      @jeorjina День тому

      Fully agree. I think theres loads of misunderstandings around this tax, but the fault for that lies on the government not the farmers. While its frustrating that people couldn't answer questions about how they'd be impacted, it shows just how confusing this plan it. The government keeps repeating that it won't affect many, but is doing a piss-poor job of proving it.
      Farmers shouldn't have to ring up their accountant to understand a basic tax, it should be better written out from the start.

    They did reduce the total agricultural budget Tory planned to spend £2.6 billion a year and they reduced it to £2.4 billion per year, then added carbon tax on nitrogen fertiliser, double the tax on double cab pickup, national insurance increase to farmers that employ people, increase minimum wage. On average a food producing farmer 106,000 in the UK will be bringing an extra £2,000 per farm from the budget.

    I managed to be there - not with the NFU. I found it very calm and well mannered but it didn't bring the true message over somehow. All this "save family farms" talk comes across as asking the cash strapped public to help keep a small number of others to not pay tax We know this isn't true but its how it appears.
    The message should be about the very low income to pay such a tax which the uneducated don't understand.
    The message should also be more hard hitting - what the government plans for the land are, how food will move to being 3D printed, the global agreement for 2030 etc etc.
    It appears to have made no impact politically judging by today's statements so the next move needs to have more backbone.
    Blogs did a good job because it effects him. Unfortunately when the farmers needed a voice in Wales he was no where to be seen.

      When the dust settles the majority who attended will realise that the changes won't affect them and that they've been used as minions by the tax dodging land grabbers.

    I as a Dutch person try to follow the situation of your inheritance tax a bit. But if an active farm is taken over by children, do they also have to pay inheritance tax? Here little or exemption

      No inheritance tax if it is gifted to the children 7 years or more before the death of the parent.

    Have you spoke to an advisor yet who's told you what your children would potentially owe?

    • @hels2608
      @hels2608 День тому

      They might not owe anything if the farm is also in his brother's and their spouses names. Even less so if he bought his brother's equity in the farmhouse and it's separate from the business.
      Unless all their kids want to be involved in the farm in the future they'll have to release equity anyway if they want them to equally inherit.
      They've got a lot to discuss and think about over the coming years.

    'lose face' !, if Labour stood back on this they may gain some respect given their track record thus far.
    Shouldn't have worn that jacket with a Nazi Swastika, he brought it on himself.

    Back British Farmer's it's still not over.
