I’ve never understood why the character couldn’t just be Scottish. There is no need for him to have a London accent - the show isn’t even set in London.
maybe he is scottish in the show and he's related to tommy hunter but he's just been putting on and english accent this whole time and it'll eventually come out that he's scottish? :P

Agreed. No family members have ever been mentioned either. Would have made more sense to be a mancunian accent.
However it is the BBC, so maybe it was just that they wanted their main character to speak more “bbc”
@@travelwell6049 Or maybe they wanted a spread of accents. Adrian Dunbar is Irish, Vicky McClure is from Nottingham and both use their real accents. So you have one Celtic character, one from the Midlands and one from South East England.
To have Martin Compston use his real accent would've been an imbalance of Celtic accents.

I’d only ever seen Martin in LoD, it wasn’t until I watched The Nest and was impressed with his (so) Scottish accent that I found out it was the other way around, which blew my mind even more. As an actor I suppose it’s not a surprise he can do it but....mother of god it’s good!
I was 1.33 minutes into the Nest. Then I went to Google and here I am now 🤣
Thats him making his accent soft. Hes from my town, the inverclyde accent can be about as "rough" as it gets
