Fun fact - this is the Jimmy Dean who started Jimmy Dean Sausage.
Which I had for brunch this morning.
Yes, and when we moved to close to Richmond, Va from the coal camps, i found out he lived close. I wish i had tried to say hi since i passed his house everyday for years, but he may have not liked that. Now he is gone. Great actor, great story teller.
Doing voiceovers for Jimmy Dean sausage commercials now from beyond the grave. 😂
We know moron.
You should react to "Tennessee" Ernie Ford. Same kind of song, but maybe even more popular, It's called "Sixteen Tons."
Yes Yes ... Sixteen Tons!!
Geoff Castelucci has done a pretty good cover of that.
1,000 percent, yes! Chod, please react to "Sixteen Tons" by Tennessee Ernie Ford!
And "Sunday BBQ"
Chod! Subscriber here--great choice, great reaction! Yes, your next one in a similar vein ought to be T.E. Ford's "Sixteen Tons" or--most definitely--"A Boy Named Sue" by Johnny Cash.
AN ABSOLUTE CLASSIC From This Time Period,, ROGER MILLER "KING OF THE ROAD"
Chod! If you like story songs then you must do Marty Robbins “El Paso.” Like a 3 minute movie! And Grady Martin adds great flamenco guitar. One of the classics of country music.
You are right. Marty Robbins is the best story song teller ever.
I was gonna suggest El Paso too. Good call.
More like a 7 minute movie!
@@bangmon1000 The "El Paso" follow-ups: "Faleena" and "El Paso City"; years apart but they flesh-out the story.
Big Iron is a great Marty Robbins song too!!
My mom thought Jimmy Dean was the greatest. I don't know how many times I heard this song in my youth. Jimmy Dean had a popular variety show and was a great entertainer. (Good sausage too.) Peace brother. ✌
He held up the timber/beam so the other miners could get out, he died saving them. I missed that for years (because wouldn't give old style "ballads" a chance). Once i payed attention i loved it.
I can't count how many times we sang this song into a hairbrush!! Still know every word by heart!!
I was amazed you played this I was just a kid when this song came out. Played on AM quite often back in the early 60s.
Yeah, I remember hearing it as a kid, it was one of those "country" songs that got played on pop music stations. The next song played would be like The Supremes, or such...
Yeh, I haven’t heard this song for a long time!
@@JJ8KK Your right. Can't think of the guy who sang King of the road. That was a western type song also.
@@carojayess1723 Me either I'm surprised he played it.
Roger Miller...King of the Road
The story behind this song, as I heard it, was Jimmy Dean’s record label wanted him to write another song/ hit and he was struggling. So, he was flying back to LA and who should sit next to him... John Wayne. They talked through the flight and when they landed and went their separate ways ,Jimmy Dean finally had an inspiration for his song....
I used to love this as a little girl. My parents had the album
Try the 1969 hit "Yesterday, When I Was Young" by country singer Roy Clark. It's a thought-provoking, poignant song. Baseball legend Mickey Mantle wanted it played at his 1995 funeral, and Clark obliged.
Sitting here with tears in my eyes and goosebumps, my dad loved country music and I'm just like a bunch of other people in the comments I've heard this song so many times, I was gonna suggest
King of the road by Roger Miller, but I see someone else did ,so I'll second that motion it's a great song...♡
Amen, Chod. I sang in choirs, trios and quartets for many years. Too many people think singers aren’t really musicians...wrong. And getting a bunch of people to sing together with harmony takes practice and work.
You can also buy sausages from this guy! Try also- 'King of the Road', by Roger Miller.
If you want more storytime, try Battle of New Orleans by Johnny Horton. It's a fun time.
Or the cover, by Lonnie Donegan!
Great tune! 😁
Actually Johnny Horton's version was a cover too. Jimmy Driftwood wrote it in the 1930's and recorded in 1957, two years before Horton's release.
@@ptournas I didn't know that. Thanks for the info.
Whenever I hear Jimmy Dean sing, I get this sudden urge for breakfast sausage
My Dad was a coal miner. Strongest skinny man i ever knew. His arms felt like steel bars and he knew how to use them. I remember this song from when i was a 12 year old living in a coal camp in the early sixties. Thanks!
I remember hearing this as a little girl & crying for Big John.😭
Did you notice the rhythmic "ting" in the background meant to evoke the sound of a pick axe striking rock? Little things like that really add to the atmosphere.
Glad you did this golden oldie.💙
Still makes me tear up. I dunno why. Just the thought of the sacrifice, I guess. 😢
This was before he started Jimmy Dean Sausage.
I heard this song more times than I can count growing up. It was released in 1961 and received a Grammy in 1962. It wasn't contemporary, but Mom's Dad had been killed in a mine accident in WV in 1941 when Mom was 8 yo, There were no histrionics, but Mom would look a bit wistful. She was definitely a Daddy's girl. Mom passed in Jan 2020. I miss her.
for another great song like this one... "King of the Road" by Roger Miller.. for two great romantic classic country songs.... "He'll Have To Go" by Jim Reeves and "Please Help Me I'm Falling" by Hank Locklin... and for a comedy spoof of Big Bad John, try "The Ballad of Irving" by Frank Gallop
haven't heard the ballad of irving, ( the 142nd fastest gun in the west ) since dr. demento was on.
This was the kind of music my mom and dad would listened to when I was growing up in the 70's. It was story time for me, epecially during car trips. I like that you reacted to this song, because I have been I've been listening to Hank Williams Sr, Charley Pride and Jim Reeves this weekend. Since you liked this song I think you would like these:
"King of the Road" Roger Miller
"Saginaw Michigan" Lefty Frizzell
"Wolverton Mountain" Claud King
*And especially the El Paso trilogy:*
"El Paso" Marty Robbins. This song came out in 1959 and in 1966 pt 2. "Feleena" and in 1976 pt. 3 "El Paso City".
How funny that you did this song. I was a little girl when this song was popular. And that was a long time ago!
If you want voices as an instrument try The Mills Brothers from the 20's or 30's. They were four guys and a guitar in the early days. Even if you don't do a reaction you MUST hear them to understand where rap, hip hop and soul came from.
Cab Driver is the song to listen to :)
@@jayarr961 I was thinking earlier like "Hold That Tiger" "Pennies From Heaven" or "Jungle Fever" where they use there voices as horns like an orchestra. But, I also love "Cab Driver". Then maybe some Louis Jordan after that. :D
Jimmy Dean starred in James Bond "Diamonds are Forever" with Sean Connery!
I’d love to see your reaction to the song, “Skip a Rope” by Jimmy Dean. It’s a very moving song.
Oh my goodness. This is the music my parents listened to. I remember my father playing this. He liked Jimmy Dean. Classic country.
The classics are the best
A blast from my childhood. My parents listened to old school country. You should check out Jim Reeves, and in the same vein, Johnny Horton, Johnny Horton had songs that told stories.
Thx! Great song! Syncopation and lyrics! -Terry
Geez I haven’t heard this in ages … it was often on the radio during the early 1960s … obviously a different time.
No greater love has a man but that he lay down his life for his brothers!!
Country Rap. Greatness! Great reaction as always! Oh yeah, every time you eat a Jimmy Dean frozen breakfast whatever. This is the man that started it. Although he actually sold it in the late 60's!!
I grew up in West Virginia & spent hours with friends drinking beers around the statue of John Henry (Big John). The story is one of those legends which retains value whether or not it was grounded in fact.
I never tough I would ear this song in reaction!
A story with backing music that just works. I remember hearing this the first time as a child and thinking, "This isn't really a SONG, is it?" But, I liked it. I picture this man trying to hold out with all that weight pressing down on him, muscles beginning to twitch and fail until he could hold no longer. To this day, I almost always tear up when they say "everybody knew it was the end of the line for Big John" after he sacrificed himself to save all those other miners.
Later, Dire Straights came out with Sultans of Swing in the mid 70s and again, I thought, "is this really a song?" But again, I liked it alot.
Then Rappers Delight hit it big, and once again.... you get the idea. These songs are just really good.
What a voice and what a story
Yes!! My daddy sang me this as a little girl!! ❤️Tennessee
First time to your channel. I really appreciate you not stopping or commenting til the end.
Too many reaction channels are too busy showing off and mugging for the camera.
I'll certainly will be coming back. GREAT JOB!!
We played this 45 over and over! ☮️♥️🤘🏽
I still remember the first time I heard this I was with my grandfather and we were in his truck and he sang the entirety of it
Who knew Jimmy Dean was one of the first rappers? His flow and rhyme was immaculate! Damn, it's been a long time since I heard this song. That was awesome!
We had this as a 45 when I was a kid Back in the 60's. My dad had a buddy that had either a diner or a bar (I can't recall which as I was just a young child then) and when he would take 45's out of rotation he'd sell to my dad for a nickel each. We had a bunch of 45's to play on our little record players at home and this was one of them! Definitely do TEF's 16 Tons as mentioned below by@dusrty827 .
Yes he was the sausage king
My daddy loved this song! Big flash for me! ❤️✌️
This is the same Jimmy Dean that started Jimmy Dean sausage, the best
Such a great reaction to this wonderful song. Another great song to consider for a reaction video is - Creeque Alley by the Mama's and the Papa's.
Yes oh my God thanks for playing that they came out with it when I was a kid
it crossed all genres it didn’t matter what kind of music you listen to that touched everybody
Just stumbled upon your channel, young man you are very articulate and intelligent, you have a very considered take on the songs and music thereof. It makes a great change from the current norm. You make it easy for us more of more advancing years
Love Jimmy Dean's voice and his sausage too. Lol. He really does make great sausage and other breakfast foods in the freezer section.
He had a beautiful singing voice other than this. He was a great musician and vocalist.
Now you have to watch Big Irving - the 142nd fastest gun in the west!
Great song BUT! The band "Little Feat" the song "Spanish Moon" from the live "Waiting for Columbus" album.
You might like " Sixteen Tons " by Tennessee Ernie Ford ✌️♥️
The song you played was a sort of remix. It was a re-lease. The last line in the original was "At the bottom of this mine lies one helluva man: Big John." For some reason, that was deemed too offensive, so Jimmy Dean re-recorded that line as "...a big, big man: Big John." That was used in subsequent pressings. My 45-rpm record has the original line. Jimmy Dean also released a story-telling record about President John F. Kennedy's war-time experiences in WWII, "PT 109." It was a huge hit, too.
MASTERFUL!
The original lyric was "At the bottom of this mine lies one HELL of a man; Big John."
I don't generally listen to much country music, but this has always been a favourite.
I love the way that you can listen to the story and imagine what's going on, another one like that is "Coward of the county" by Kenny Rogers.
The human voice is the hardest instrument to master.
In the original recording, the lyrics at the end were “At the bottom of this mine, lies one HELLUVA man. Big John.” But they had to change it because you couldn’t say Hell.
The roots of rap came from blues and country. Just like Rock and Roll.
There's another song about 3 guys who get trapped in a mine, and what they had to do to survive called Timothy. Only 2 made it out. What happened to timothy, God what did we do. Yeah
That group is called 'The Buoys'. Another good song by them is "Give Up Your Guns".
I really liked your opinion on this, to be honest, it’s exactly what I thought. Keep up the good work 👍🏻👍🏻
We had the follow up to this. Little bitty big john, about Big bad Johns son. Very good, and a brilliant b side, called Steel men.
Nice one...havent heard this song for awhile....
I grew up in a coal mining community in southern WV and when I was 10 I had this on a 45 record.
Even by my archaic standards, this is old music. However, pre-teenage memory from AM radio days could still pull up the lyrics along with the backing vocal line. Great music is like that. To slightly paraphrase Mr. Knopfler:
Here comes Jimmy, gonna tell you a story.
Hand me down my walking shoes.
Here comes Jimmy with the power and the glory.
Back beat. The talking blues. [country variant, just ask Willie Nelson]
Geoff Castellucci from Voiceplay recently made a beautiful cover of this song... And he has also a good cover of "Tennessee" Ernie Ford's "Sixteen Tons". :-)
As you appreciate the use of "voices as instruments", you would probably like some "a cappella" groups, namely Pentatonix, Home Free and Voiceplay. [Very] Different styles and repertoires, but their stuff is impressive. :-)
Welcome to country patter songs. As with stand up comedy, it sprang out of the traditional American form of entertainment known as yarn-spinning. Classic American tall tales are all remnant examples of yarn-spinning. "A Boy Named Sue" and "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" are also examples of this. So, yeah, the delivery is a pretty fun and compelling story-telling delivery that takes advantage of the natural cadences and rise and fall of natural speech and poetry to match the backup instrumentals.
I had nearly forgot this song. It was very popular in youth. I grew up to be 6'6" and I weighed 245, so I naturally got "Big John" as a nick-name. It's kinda funny thinking about it now. I'm 65 years Olds now but I'm still 6'6" and weigh 250. And once In a while I still get called "Big John".
He got some darn good sausage and biscuits too!
Also the Jimmy Dean in the 007 movie “Diamonds are Forever”
Who knew some old country singer was a rap pioneer.
He also had the sequel "Cajun Queen".. I liked "PT 109" too, the tune about JFK in WW2.
I can hear the lyrics so clearly
Who ever does the voice for the new commercials really has his voice down. maybe give a listen to My fav song by Clapton great guitar solo and the guy on keyboards will blow you away Old Love (Eric Clapton "A Benefit For The Crossroads Centre At Antigua" New York 1999)
Man this reminds me of my gramps. Rip Gramps love you.
If you're going back to this one, then you need to go all the way back to Tennessee Ernie Ford. Mm hmm.
I remember this from way back in like 1964 or something. My dad used to play this on the Jimmy Dean album he had when we were kids. Jimmy Dean also had his own primetime tv show. He was a huge country/western recording star in those days. Not to mention his Sausage and Breakfast sandwich business. He's been gone for many years, but they still use his voice in the tv commercials for "Jimmy Dean" sausage. Just saw one of the commercials the other day on tv.
I remember him starring in the 007 flick "Diamonds Are Forever" with Sean Connery.
Before it was called country it was country and western...this song is from those days.
There is a sequel to this, Cajun Queen
YES thats tbe Sausage guy...
A Couple More Classic Must Hears,, JIMMIE RODGERS "KISSES SWEETER THAN WINE" & "HONEYCOMB"
Did you catch the connection between singer Jimmy Dean and Jimmy Dean Brand Sausages? Yup same guy
A really great story song is Teddy Bear by Red Sovine
If you want to get into more vocal performances, you should check out some acapella groups like Home Free. I highly recommend 'Man of constant sorrow'.
Coward of the County by Kenny Rogers is another great story song.
Besides sausage, he has also acted in a couple of Bond films. :)
Steve Earl kinds pays tribute to that style of vocals in his song, copper head road. Check it out. Story telling while kinda talking it.
Big John on 8-track 😎
Loved this. Jimmy Thanks. please react to country star Roy Clark on jimmy Dean's show. You can find it as -- Roy Clark medley hits 1963
My 1st time too. Was OK
Try Once Bitten Twice Shy by Great White
There are two more songs that go with this. One this is the first of 3. The next 2 is Little bitty big John and then the Cajun queen if you what to hear how the story ends
He had two sequels to this song. Part 2 is "The Cajun Queen" and part 3 is "Little Bitty Big John"
You should try Johnny Western ---Cowpoke, The searchers, Ten Years or mabye even Rio Muerto with Richard Boone.
Jimmy Dean recorded a song - well, actually it is just him talking, but it is the most touching tribute to his mother and mothers that I've ever heard. You might want to keep it in mind for Mother's Day next year. The song is "I.O.U."
I agree with you about voices as instruments. As such, you need to listen to Pentatonix. Try their cover of “Amazing Grace”.
You will not regret it.
Band LOUDNESS song CRAZY NIGHTS
👍👍
Jimmy Dean has been dead for a decade and is still doing commercials! Good marketing firm!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Don’t know if it was already said but jimmy dean song “To A Sleeping Beauty” is a great story for any father daughter relationship
