All the guitar sounds on The Fish are done by Chris Squire on the bass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yepper !!
@michaelbeerbados3291 Chris Squire...greatest bass player of all time
and Bruford, drums/percussion.
YES!!! The greatest band there ever was or ever will be!🤩
👍🔈🔉🔊😎
Remember back in the days when you challenged us about Yes...now look at you....baby is all grown-up 😊😊😊😊😊
R.I.P. Chris and Alan. I miss you my brothers.🎸🎸🎸🥁🥁🥁🕊🕊🕊😎
Agreed, but this was Bill.
@@ak99uk I know that. Seen them 214 times. Was paying tribute to my brothers. Thank you.👍😎
Good to have you back doing it as only you can Chod!
By the end of 1971, Yes were firing on all cylinders and they delivered the second half of their one-two punch with Fragile. A superlative sustained musical statement, it saw the band framing Anderson’s fanciful, sci-fi-laced themes with wildly inventive and hyper-aggressive arrangements.
Egged on by the turbocharged rhythm section of Bruford and Squire, Howe and the group’s wily new keyboard whiz, Rick Wakeman (who replaced Kaye just prior to the album’s sessions), engaged in electric games of one-upmanship that revealed how they were actually two sides of the same creative mind.
It didn’t hurt that Yes were sitting on a sublime collection of melodic gems - most notably “Roundabout” and “Long Distance Runaround” - that hit radio playlists with deadly aim. Within months of its release, Fragile became the breakthrough the band had long sought, going to Number Two in the U.S. - GuitarPlayer, 2021
The reason yes is so good at transitions is because.,... They know what the hell they're doing. While most other bands are still on page 3 with their understanding of chords and theory, yes was on Page six. Even though Steve Howe was self-taught, the influences he learned from Chet Atkins to early rockabilly, classical, flamingo gave him a knowledge of the fretboard and a sophisticated knowledge of advanced chord movements that most other guitarists didn't have. Then you have wakeman, classically trained, next level sophistication. He was brilliant at knowing where when and how to use the new technologies like the Moog, mellotron, synthesizers. Anderson, though he only strummed a little guitar, was listening to composers like Stravinsky and was talented enough to hear the music in his head. Squire grew up being part of a choir, which gave him a more advanced understanding then the 12 bar blues. Bruford was more interested in jazz then being a rock and roll drummer , so complex time signatures he was familiar with. Finally throw in they all were very creative at their instruments. Nobody else sounded like squire, Steve howes approach was unique, wakeman was being wakeman, Bruford created his own style and nobody else sounded like Anderson. Finally they took the time to craft the music. While the rolling Stones recording an album in 3 days yes worked on some of these compositions for months, bickering and arguing until they got it polished.
..
I was lucky to find this band only three years after they started. The spacey stuff is actyually a second piece called Scheindeleria Praematorus (sorry about the spelling) which really means THE FISH which is really a Chris Squire composition. I have a HUGE collection of the band and related music the various members have produced and over 360 live concerts. They're kind of the soundtrack of my life.
Pure Progressive Alchemy!!!!!!!!
1971 was when everything changed for me, I grow up listening to music from the early sixties, but YES changed everything.
There is only one YES.
❤❤❤One of the greatest Rock n Roll bands EVER!!!!❤❤❤❤
Good to see you back in action Chod! My music loving brother from another mother.. You're one of the few reactors who knows your business. Right up there with LA and Che from airplaybeats. There are enough subs out there for alot of you guys to rule the roost. Keep it up bro!
Love LA & Che ❤
@@krisdoggett483 yes they are great and know their music, Chod as well . That's why I stick with them and was really mad cause I thought youtube kicked Chod off. The whole copyright thing. The fact is so many people are getting turned onto music they never would have listened to otherwise and it's also expanding rock fans musical taste. Most of this music is no longer on the radio and whatever is , it's the most commercial overplayed rock songs anyway.. here you get the varied menu and the artists get FREE promotion of their songs, new younger fans and older fans who go out and buy some of their old classic CDS on vinyl again.. I know I did! I think it's a bigger benefit than a detriment to the old time artists having guys like Chod praising their works!
@@edwardcapobianco2975 I agree. It seems completely counterproductive. These reactors are really doing these artists a lot of good by introducing their music to a new audience, as well as entertaining the people who already love the music and paid for it already.
@@krisdoggett483 exactly so.. for example I was never much of a Black Sabbath fan but listening to the tracks here on reaction channels made me realize what I had been missing.. along with Many other bands.
You are so right. They use their minds to hear the music, and LA and Che are funnnnknneeee
The second part is all bass guitar and drums , all the guitars are the 'Bass' . I bought the albums 'Fragile and 'Close To The Edge' when they were released in the early seventies and am still ' blown away' by this incredible music. It is a pity Bill Bruford left the band when they finished 'Close To The Edge' . Thanks Chod !
... et les harmoniques de Steve Howe c'est comme des étoiles qui brillent en plein jour
Every time i hear this, the bass by Chris Squire impresses me. I was introduced in the seventies to Yes with the album Relayer, and after I got used to that, all other music they made seemed more simple.
imo, there is no Counting the beat with Yes. Its all gut feel/instinct.
As a bassist, I am always impressed with Squires ability to nail the basslines with the most beautiful melodies.
Yes dude that's true grateful instrument bass rhythm, and chords, not to forget the Contra bass
They were masterful live. No, they didn't have to bring charts. They played these songs from memory, though there were always some adjustments in the arrangement and even some improvisation to the songs on stage. But they sounded every bit as good as the studio recordings.
Yes, they did!
Steve Howe can’t read music, which makes things even more impressive
YOU ARE SO RIGHT THEY ARE MUSICAL GENIUSES!!!!
Welcome back! Missed your reactions... And getting back to Yes! Much appreciated!!
With Peace and Love to all! (Michael)
EVERYONE who does a first time reaction to YES has a huge SMILE on their face. That says it all. :)
Yes cause into your heart
Saw them live several times late 70’s. Incredible.
The drummer is Bill Buford who draws from his love of jazz hence the signature. Saw it performed in Columbus , Ohio at Vet's memorial one week after the release of 'Fragile'
Saw them live- no music 🎼 anywhere in sight. They are that good- you’re right, genius level.😎
Welcome back, Chod. Good to see you getting back to some great music again. YES!!
There is a great live version of this on the YESSONGS live album. Squire goes off!!! 😊
Yes drummer Bill Bruford played on one more Yes album (Close to the Edge) before joining King Crimson. Crimson’s next three albums contain some of the very best of modern rock music. Check out Lark’s Tongue, Starless, and Red.
I like to think of them as chaotic perfection.
Also, just based on the mastery of their instruments, they may be the best band ever.
Nice way to put it
Son your back. I saw that first reaction to Yes, you've come a long way baby. Sad to see you living in a tent 😂. Smore YES! 🙏🎶
I saw the 3 times in the early 70s, once with Tony Kaye (the yes Album tour) the other 2 with Wakeman. Two with Bruford on drums, One with Alan White. They always played these complicated songs without sheet music. And they didnt just 'get through them' they brought them to convincing and inspiring life.
I caught them at Washington stadium. 73, they were touring with Peter Frampton, who was very popular at the time. Truth is I listen more to Yes . Rediscovered , Perpetual Change filmed in concert. blew me away again.
Fan for over 50 years. 214 shows. The best musicians you will ever see. STOP PAUSING❗️❗️❗️😎
I'm glad you're getting back into it again, it's too bad you had to go through what a lot of other reactors didn't go through. I've seen them live, in concert quite a few times since the 1970s; they inspired me to get into music with guitar and piano. And yes they'll play 2 to 3 hours of music with very little crowd interaction. Their music is so complicated and sophisticated that there isn't much room to adlib and therefor their concerts sounded just like their album, they were all business on the stage: they created magic, but in concert you can see the effort it takes to pull it off. They had a great sound system, them and Supertramp had great sound systems.
U get it! YES are YES
Saw Yes in the Round in 78’. The keyboards were crazy!
First time I saw them was 'In the Round' in 79'. I was 17. It was like I went to another world.
Having seen YES live 49 times.....I can die a happy man.
3 of the shortest songs ever by YES begin Side Two of this album. These are the 2ND & 3RD songs. The 1ST and their shortest song ever was written by drummer Bill Bruford and unfortunately is overlooked and underappreciated. "5 Percent to Nothing" is their syncopated masterpiece and segues perfectly as a unique percussive intro into "Long Distance Runaround / Fish". They make the perfect Trilogy! IMHO. As a drummer you would have loved it! I hope you take the time to listen to it someday soon.
The Fish is all bass guitars, no guitar, no keyboards, it is all Chris. Vocals all Chris. Bill on drums.
"Shindleria Praematurus"
Great band - always enjoy a good Yes reaction! Keep up the good work!
If you listened to this over and over again like I did, you could duplicate this from memory....but to create it?! Thats soooo amazing to me!
Cold summer, glistening... I still remember the dream there. Whenever I think I've heard my favorite lyric, I find a better lyric
People miss that gentle rumbling underneath it all 😅its pure madness 😅
Rick Wakeman and Chris Squire both had professional music theory training but Yes mainly relied on rehearsing and recording their rehearsals to learn their song arrangements. They worked hard on being able to play their intricate songs solidly cause they wrote it all back in the day with the live show in mind.
Chod, so glad to see you!!!!!
Good to have u back bro
welcome back to Yes 😁
Bruford's snare hit on the 5 is so tasty...Learning this sound decades ago helped me with independence...The Fish is all Bass
❤ Chris ❤
They dont need charts.Chris Spuire said they were not as proficient...just well rehearsed.
I love when you said they make my head hurt but love it at the same time this song is probably my favorite yes song but the time signature drives me nuts I think bill bruford is coming in between the 4 and the 1 or it could be 3 and 4 drives me nuts in a good way 😂😂😂😂😂
The verses are in 4 but the drummer is hitting the snare every 5 beats lol. All I can say is......YES!!!
That's layers and layers of bass my dude.
Hey Chod! I'm glad you did "The Fish" also. The 2 songs go together. And Chris Squire is doing a lot more than "da da dum." Most of the sounds you hear were done on the bass. Peace.
Bill Buford is playing 4/4 switching between the on to the off beat, a very tasteful syncopation, on the verses.
"you either get it or you don't" well said and the same thing can be said about Wishbone Ash and Camel who are similar in style to Yes.
Nice to see you Chod
so many great memories listening to Yes, so many awesome groups back in the 70's
I was listening to this when it first came out, before I was 10, older brothers!
I"m glad I "got it" in 1971. Best...band...ever. Thanks!!!
Being 69 and living in the days of classic rock, going to MANY MANY concerts in the 70’s……I find it great to watch people react these days react to the greats.
Watch some live Yes ..they play from something beyond memory.
YES❣️❣️❣️ The greatest band on this or any other planet❗️❗️❗️🪐🪐🪐😎 Thanks Chod!!!👍
🤩
@@TigerMtnKing 👍😎
fact check-TRUE !!
@@michaelbeerbados3291 👍😎
For the most part Yes played lived exactly like they recorded. As you say their time count is ridiculous, so there was limited opportunity to stray very far from their recordings. They were all business on stage. I got to see them every few years from the 1970s.
Seem the twice they dont read music... saw 90125 tour was killer
Time to watch Squire do his live bass solo on video, you'll love it.
I can't wait until you explore the Yes "Drama" album. Although there were major personnel changes, it has that Yes brilliance and it was HEAVY ! With tracks like "Tempus Fugit", "Into The Lens", "Machine Messiah" and "Run Through The Light". These songs shouldn't be overlooked. It was like 1980 and there was a freshness about it.
Top Shelf inventory , this band .
Undeniable brilliance intersects Compositional prowess .
Compelling as it comes .
I literally have seen Yes play live over 50 times, they never had any charts. And the second half of this, "The Fish" is all Chris Squire on bass, no guitars, all bass. You said it. Genius.
If you do the the Yessongs version, you can hear Chris Squire get it.
No music charts!! All from memory!
Chris Squire is my favorite bass, but please check out the mind blowing speed of Leon Lyons of Ten Years after Life song: good morning little school girl
2 solos at the same time between Alvin Lee ( another icon guitar player ) and Leon Lyon. Alvin Lee is also be famous of being fast.
You enjoy Leon Lyons speed in Woodstock: I am going home.
Watch a live performance. Saw them live in the mid 1970's. What a performance.
Good that you're back. Now, are you ready for Yessongs (live 1972 released 1973)?
Time signatures within time signatures
So confusingly brilliant
Chod, great reaction. Not being as musician, I know about time signitures, so I feel like learn something from you. I love the bass line. Can you react to "south side of the sky". Awesome song from the same album that this song is on.
Only 2 instruments were used. Chris Squire's Rickenbacker 6 string bass gutar, and Bill Bruford playing precusion (drums).
Memory, but sometimes much longer versions and multiple songs connected with no break between
I've seen YES 40 times starting in 76 and there has never been a chart on stage
Snare is on a 4 count. Fist measure he hits on 1, 2nd measure 2, 3rd 3, 4th 4, then back to 1. Just count the 4 count on your four main fingers. That’s the way I learned it on kit.
It's all bass guitar.....no 6 string was harmed in the making of the fish
Its ALL Memory.
machine messiah
Who is going to tell him the fish is a base solo :P
I only know a few from them, thanks for sharing! Some quick recs: The Mars Volta are a more recent prog rock fave of mine, check out Wax Simulacra (best version is performed on Letterman). King Crimson - '21st century schizoid man' and Edgar Winter- Frankenstein are also mind melters. Looking forward to seeing more music reactions!
They are not reading music. I've seen them do Close to the Edge live and it sounded like the studio version. In my opinion Chris Squire is one of the best bass players.
Saw them live in Edinburgh in 1973. No reading whatsoever.
Awesome reaction. Keep doing more YES. My number one rock band is Led Zeppelin. My number one prog rock band is YES. So you can have them both as number one just different genres. Here's a good one you haven't done yet. "In the Presence of". I recommend this live version: ua-cam.com/video/X_KDXoMB5wg/v-deo.html
No, they don't perform reading the music charts to the songs. The only musician I have ever seen reading the music charts in a live performance was Al Dimeola in Carnige Hall on his first performance with Return To Forever.
it was made in a time when people had time
They're not reading... seen them multiple times ... even front row in front of Rick Wakeman. It's as if they're channeling spirits from the musical dimension. The same holds true for Genesis... two bands that seemingly have mystical properties over the sounds and flow of music.
It will be interesting to see if you like the later stuff. I rreally like 90215.
123 1234 time signature
Hell yeah 👍 0:07
I saw them twice in concert. They do NOT use sheet music
No reading! Watch Yessongs Movie. Amazing. Saw them 3 times in mid to late 70s.
sometimes Jon uses lyric sheets, but Yes doesn't use any for the music 😁
Hi again, Chod! ...counts messed up? Perhaps the count method is... perhaps.... wrong? inadequate? Go by feeling. It's all there is, it's what music is about (...as if you didn't know) - and good to see you again! :)
- and you lost some weight, man?
The verse is in 5/4. The snare hits on 5.
Snare and gtr is in 5/4 verse riff is 6/8 and vocals and piano 4/4 … big shift in bridge ..not gonna map it here main riff 4/4 with 6/8 lead in to verse.. the fish is all bass tracks no GTR and percussion in 7/8
They do not read music live it’s all memorized
They ain`t reading, as far as I can tell.
Dude your back! Cool remember get back to Steely Dan!!!
You need to break the beat down another step.... i.e. divide what you have in your head in half.. twice as fast. Let that percolate then you'll start hearing it.
