    And here we are, at the end…or perhaps, a beginning? Regardless, it has been a pleasure to follow this old road with you all.
    May we find our redemption here…

      It is not the beginning. But it is a beginning, and one worth marking.

    I don't think the ancestor failed, the protege didn't become truly obsessed with the crown until the failed ritual. I think the ancestor was acting as a herald and helping guide the wider realm to frenzy.

    It's interesting to consider the many asymmetries the game leaves us with in the end.
    Most of the world was remade according to the protege's opinions and emotions: the Sprawl and the Foetor are great examples of this.
    But the people in these regions also had agency, as Bourassa said in the interview with you. Their choice on how to approach the apocalypse influenced the outcome as well.
    Then, you have the Shroud: we know the protege visited it, but he's not the one remaking the inhabitants into fishmen. They did it themselves as a last resort to survive.
    Then there is the Tangle. This is where the original academic study was located, so it's an immensely important location to the protagonist. But the protege didn't transform the general and the army: that happened as the manifestation of the cult shocked them on an existential level.
    It seems that while the protagonist can indeed reshape the world with the power of the Crown, it cannot do so in a limitless way. I would almost say that it distorts the world, rather than outright remake it from scratch.
    And then... There's the Mountain. Did it exist before the ritual?
    If it did, there is no clue that the protege ever interacted with it during his normal life, making it the only place in the game not connected to him pre-ritual (other than the Sluice, whose connection is DD1).
    If it didn't exist before the ritual, then why specifically a mountain? And why doesn't it disappear with the Hateful God? Indeed, it even shows up in the Kingdoms trailer!
    I fully agree with your interpretation of the "weak" hypothesis. On a thematic level - we are flawed, emotional beings not fit to handle the immense power of the Crown. On a literal level, in the DD universe our creator is the Heart. We are a profusion of errant flesh. Pretty sure that is a corrupting brand one can't overcome.
    The Crown at the end is basically a monkey's paw. Yes, it will give you power to reshape the world, technically. But you'll fuck it up because you're human, and the mere act of completing the murderous ritual will compromise you even further anyway; and it will "steal you" once the ritual is complete, so that you're not the one in charge anyway even as a part of you is incorporated into the Crown.
    I think the Academic's words also imply that the Crown is sentient... I think it's a god, an Outer God basically. What its relevance is to terrestrial cultures, why we saw it so prominently in the Estate and the Dungeon (even the growths!), why the religion of the Flame has anti-Crown iconography, the connection to the Heart... I can't say.
    I spend way too much time thinking about the Mountain.
    Like you, I was very profoundly affected by this game on an emotional level. I love both games, but I have a more personal connection with this one. I will forever be thankful to Red Hook for making it, and I won't stop playing it any time soon - or listening to the extended Battle Of The Mountain while I work. Thanks for that, @osborOST!

    As within the film The Mummy(1999 version), "Death is only the beginning." Course in this case, the channel is not truly dead now is it? Just a small piece of a part of you worth revisiting from time to time. Much like how one revisits their Shadow at times, how I do so for myself and others as a witch.
    May you enjoy the peace and bounty of life waiting for you. I know I've my own to slowly work towards at long last. It certainly is coming pretty damn fast. Until we next meet, even if my time with this channel was very brief indeed. I shall await more whenever you decide to take a trip into here again. Thank you for helping me to understand the lore behind two amazing games, games I fear I'll never be skilled enough to play. Let alone have the patience/sanity to master, hmhmhm. Blessed be to you and yours Miskatonic. So shall it be.

      Nothing truly ever ends. The story doesn't stop just because the storyteller has stopped telling it. Nor does it undo what has already been done. The legacy remains.
      All this to say, thanks to you too. Words can't describe how much I appreciate everyone who watches my videos, comments on them, and wants to see more. The story means nothing if no one is around to hear it.

    I’m gonna be honest with you Misk, your work got me into writing. I’d always flirted with the idea of dedicating myself to creating a world rich in lore and love, but I never had the inspiration to commit myself to such a grand task. That was until I came across your lore series on Darkest Dungeon, caught a stray livestream and (after I figured out how to navigate the discord servers’ security requirement like a boomer on Facebook) found the writing corner. Even though the one and only price I submitted to it was admittedly lackluster it had been the push I needed to learn the craft at a professional level. Thanks to your writing and coverage of the lore, cosmic horror will always hold a special place in my heart. I wish you the best of luck in whichever direction you choose to take your life in, and if I ever need to acclimate into the mindset to write cosmic horror stories, well, I doubt your very own Body of Work will be leaving this wondrous hellscape of a platform that this sit is at times.
    14:53 also you could say that the protégé knew the best way to a man’s heart (God I remember that silly joke like it was yesterday).

      Thanks Pixelcat, you're one of the many who I've met over the years, but you've always stuck by my side. And I notice things like that. I was inspired by others great writers to take up the craft and managed to inspire others to take up the pen as well. And that's all that matters. Whatever it takes, keep moving forward with your writing. Whether it's a YT channel, a blog, a discord, a writing group, or a D&D table. Keep writing and honing your craft.

    I wonder what would have happened if the hateful god decided to try and add the heart to his body of work? Would they succeed, or fail? Would the heart allow it, or destroy it? An interesting thought indeed...

    It is truly uncanny how the fire in the library and the arrival of the letter aligned itself, personally I doubt it was the Accademic, throughout the history he is presented as practicly 'pure' one who always rejects any idea of achieving his goals regardless of the cost, he is the anti-thesis of the Protegé, I now think that maybe, maybe, someone did not wish for them to understand the true nature of the Iron Crown, which they could have deduced from literal sources, maybe someone wanted to plunge the Protegé into more, practical sphere of research, denial of reason and steadiliness for... a more satisfying experience of science
    PS: Darkest Dungeon II is probably one of the best games for people in mental crisis, I was deeply plunged into mental crisis in 2022, Darkest Dungeon II is all about fighting your imperfections and accepting yourself as you are, a weak human being, and it's ending is the most heartwarming thing I experienced in my gametime, all the love to you Miskatonic, we shall se again ❤

    I confess I was so stun-locked when the video came out, that I couldn't even write something about it.
    Wish I could match your skill, in crafting intricate pieces about VGM and the environment they conjure in my mind.

    Soooo what does the ending of this game have to do with the ending of the first game? Wasn't it revealed in the last game that the entire world was just part of that dark heart monster? Doesn't that invalidate this game's ending?

    • @MiskatonicMemorialist
      @MiskatonicMemorialist  8 днів тому +1

      The first game was a nihilist war against the never-ending nightmares of the universe. Victory, a hallow and ridiculous notion. The second game is about the redemption of humanity, about how even though we are imperfect spawns of the heart, we still have value. It's the other side of the coin.

    • @gianmarcomarzo7327
      @gianmarcomarzo7327 2 дні тому

      In cosmic horror, victory means sealing the gate. It's always temporary.
      You can stop the cult from awakening Cthulhu, but Cthulhu is still there. You have saved the world, but sooner or later, you know it will happen again, and while you need to be lucky every time, Cthulhu only needs to be lucky once.
      That's what makes it cosmic horror. It's not a problem you can ever fully solve.
      So. Did you save the world from the Iron Crown? Yes. Will the world still explode some day when the Heart matures? Also yes. Moreover, if the Protege could complete this ritual, someone else will come along eventually and do it, and all this will happen again.
      That doesn't invalidate the importance of your actions. Some day, we will all die, but you would still save a person from dying *now* if you could.

    • @7F0X7
      @7F0X7 2 дні тому

      @@gianmarcomarzo7327 I don't care about the iron crown, I care about the fact that game 1's ending wasn't so much as acknowledged in game 2, therefore game 1's ending utterly invalidates game 2. Plot continuity matters, and game 2 may as well have had zero connection to game 1.

    • @gianmarcomarzo7327
      @gianmarcomarzo7327 2 дні тому

      @@7F0X7 but... Why? What you're saying doesn't make any sense. DD1 ends with the revelation about the world being an egg for the gestating Heart. The Heart does not burst at the end of DD1. Instead, the heir resets the time loop that the *estate* is locked in, and the stalemate continues. How exactly does that invalidate the events of DD2?
      For that matter, we don't even have indication that DD2 takes place AFTER DD1. The protege and the Ancestor interacted in the past, so they were alive at the same time, but who can tell how long it's been, when both the estate and the kingdom have been stuck in their own time loops, one against the Heart and one against the Mountain?
      I swear I don't understand what the causal connection is in your mind.

    • @7F0X7
      @7F0X7 2 дні тому

      @@gianmarcomarzo7327 the chronology doesn't matter. The fact that game 1 is a loop doesn't matter. The protags of game 1 are inevitably going to fail and the heart will break free. In fact, the fact that it's a time loop means that game 1 probably takes place after game 2. The good guys have to win every single time in a time loop while the bad guys only need to win once, so it's inevitable that the heart will win in game 1, thus making everything in game 2 moot. Hope that explains it casually enough.
