- I am not a trained Cantonese teacher. I'm a Cantonese heritage speaker who studied economics and fashion in college. My husband isn't Chinese. He studied German in college and had zero exposure to Cantonese before we met. So how could me teaching him Cantonese possibly work?
Do you need a language degree to help your partner learn? My answer is no, and in this video I'll show you how we practice together. I believe you don't need to be a grammar whiz to teach someone a foreign language. More important is to have a patient ear and willingness to help (oh and lots of comprehensible input!)

Just quickly the "係 hai6 + verb" is an emphatic sentence. The "係 hai" here is the so-called copula or auxiliary/linking verb and translated as "is indeed", also acting just like the "do" verb in English. 佢係有耳仔㗎 can be translated as "It DOES have ears!"

Raymond’s explanation is perfect! I would like to add that 係 means “yes”, so “indeed” is a good translation. It gives a sense of confirmation to the sentence. However, “indeed” and “do” are not as commonly used on everyday conversation. I would like to use the word “really” as a replacement for the translation. “Really” is 真係 in Cantonese. So we can use it as an abridged word. In the story, it would be “turtle really has ears!”.
Another example I would like to give. Let’s say two people having a conversation.
A: You don’t like to drink water
B: (to answer A) I really don’t like to drink water.
Can B say “I don’t like to drink water.”? Yes, but I believe it sounds better as a confirmation to say “I really don’t like to drink water”.
Translate that to Cantonese would be…
A: 你唔鍾意飲水。
B: 我係唔鍾意飲水。
This is a confirmation of what A said.

jared is absolutely right, as children we just absorb the rules of a language without asking why. sometimes not always, asking why will hinder your progress

I've discovered the HBL channel a while ago and it's wonderful, it's really hard to find such resource for Cantonese learning. The visual cue for the tones is perfect.

Jared is amazing! I’ve been w my husband for 20 yrs. We live in a multigenerational household where my Cantonese speaking parents speak Cantonese w my kids, yet my husband barely knows any Cantonese. my kids have to translate for my husband. I can’t blame him bc I’m also extremely bad w languages myself.

The nice thing about Cantonese words is that when you learn to pronounce a certain character, you can easily learn many different words (as words are often a combination of characters). If you learn the word 海 (hoi2) you can easily learn any word that has the character 海 in it.
I wonder if Jared can recognize some characters simply by seeing those characters a lot (Hambaanglaang can be useful for recognizing Chinese characters )

Thank you for sharing the 冚唪唥粵文讀本 Hambaanglaang Cantonese Graded Readers. If you can pronounce Hambaanglaang using the right Cantonese tones, it will be fabulous. I am sure you know how to say the 6 tones. So the name of the readers is Ham6 Baang6 Laang6. They are all in 6 tones. I will be checking out their materials too. Thank you again for sharing that!
