Death by Pressing and Crushing: A Medieval Punishment You'd Want To Avoid...

- Death by pressing or crushing has been around for centuries, although the method used has varied greatly from place to place. In general, it meant that some form of heavy weight would be placed on top of a person with the intention of causing their death. Ow.

Nice punn.that was a good one!

He's really crushing these Medieval topics.
"More weight" is one of the most badass things anyone in human history has said. He might have been killed and treated without justice, but he cemented his legacy as a hero with two words.
I came here to say that lol but you beat me to it.
I don't know about "badass". Maybe. It definitely was the smart thing to do. He knew he wassn't going to get any mercy or help, and that they would make his suffering as difficult, prolonged and painful as possible to make him give a plea. The smartest thing he could do would be to shorten his own suffering by getting weight added as quickly as possible and getting it over with quickly. Yeah, I'll say badass too. He used his only option - the suffering was much more intense but for a shorter time, but his ploy won his battle.
@@TedBronson1918 He calculated the integral of the suffering vs. time graph and chose the least amount of area under the curve. Smart man.
I prefer execution by firing squad. 😅
@@dennisschenning1388 I prefer death by snu snu.
Studying Medieval times really gives you the full understanding of how sick humans can be. Not just in what people were doing that was so horrendous but the normalization of it all
I think were the ones who aren't normal.. protecting paedophiles and sex offenders who molest children and women and then giving them a short sentence inside and upon release giving them new names for their safety.
That my friend ain't normal.
Medieval times in Europe. They'd been doing those things in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East for centuries. The Romans and the Greeks had their fun too. Rome broke bones on the Wheel or just smashed them with a club. EVERY ancient culture had their own practices. Don't let the fact that a bit of technology was added into the practices fool you. That stuff just made the torturer's job easier and allowed them to target areas better.
Don't include africa. And try to minimize white Europeans being so sadistic. No culture js as violent as white Europeans
@@katarinalove8649 Katarina You've got blinders on. Just in the 20th century Chairman Mao the Chinese leader was responsible for the murder of approximately 80 MILLION of his own countrymen in the name of Communism. Thats not even delving into the history of the Mongol Invasion. Then there is centuries of butchery and human sacrifice to the gods of Central America, human and child sacrifice for millenia in the Middle East (you can find it mentioned in the Bible), and the slave trade that centered around Africa, the Mediterranean Sea and Red Sea for untold centuries. Europeans are newcomers on the scene. OUR historians have made a big deal about Hitler killing 7 million innocents people (in an industrial, organized manner) during a war in which he caused the deaths of about 20 million other people (soldiers, civilians etc...). Hitler was far outdone within a short time by Mao. I suggest you take your cultural blinders off, sit down and actually read REAL history books. The opinion that you spouted is racist. It wouldn't be allowed to be said about any other group of people as a whole and shouldn't be allowed against Europeans either. If I had heard that comment from you in person I would have called you out as a racist and embarrassed the hell out of you while proving you wrong.
No need to go back in time, look at Syria, Ukraine, Jemen; Torture and death in abundance.
you know what’s also sad? these guys couldn’t even prove their innocence. once they suspected it was you, you had to endure these messed up torture devices.
That’s so true by the way you’re so beautiful

@@ScouseEquity I’m not white knighting. Trying to put an end to these online simps.
It never ceases to amaze me how much humans can prove their inhumanity to others. The most cruel animal in the world is humankind.
My love and respect for Saint Margaret Clithroe for what happened to her. The Elisabethan era so romanticised by movie makers was a very dark time. She volunteered to go through with this to protect her family. She was more than a religious icon, she was a hero.
I so agree - she’s always been one of my favourite saints, due to her extreme courage.
Yes the English martyrs were so awesome 😭
Giles Corey was a badass. I learned about him in elementary school and still have not forgotten about him
Damn, that head crusher though! That one made me wince just from hearing you describe it. And it even had things to catch popped eyeballs? Someone put far too much thought into that.
Actually, when someone says they have to press you for an answer, it actually comes from the pressing torture. Isn't the English language wonderful?
But eyes are attached to a stalk, that contains blood vessels and nerves! You cn see the little hole for these ligaments, if you see a skull up closely!
That expression exists in all romance languages; most probably in others, too.
@@CapaNoisyCapa yes could be a reference to the process of wine or olive oil making as well, as both are pressed to get something out of it.
If you can imagine it, you can bet someone, somewhere has done it. Thank god I live in a time and place where the presumption of innocence is law.
The whole "confess or die" thing seems barbaric now, but I've seen enough police questionings and interrogations to know that mentality is still thriving.
The mentalitys never gonna go away.
Its a flaw you cant work out, thats why we slapped the right to council aka a lawyer on top of it.
Torture doesn't work. It's proven. You can't get confessions out of someone with pain. Most people will lie through their teeth and tell you what you wanna hear just to make it stop. And that just complicates the investigation.
Which is why you should NEVER talk to the cops without a lawyer present. Even if you are innocent
What interrogations still have a confess or die mentality? Do you have some examples? I've seen a lot of interrogations but can't think of what you mean.
First off questioning during torturing even in times of war is proven to be ineffective....A person will always sooner or later confess anything you want to hear for you to stop so it virtually has no value....Secondly as a law student I do want to ask how many questionings you have seen and in which countries, I could tell you nothing in our days comes close to that kind of torture during interrogations by police questionings, lest you would get acquitted right away for misconduct and you would be the one suing them, and opening any kind of interactions while being questioned by police BTW is positively the most stupid thing to do in any circumstance given anything you say will be used against you as they will let you know, so just call a lawyer and you'll be fine, there's no torture involved
Whoever dreamed up these execution methods must have been a sadistic psychopath.
Nope, just normal human beings. We really can be a fun bunch sometimes
@john heiskell Most 'Witches' in Northern Europe were murdered by protestants. The 'Spanish Inquisition' was invented by a jewish convert. Torquemada. Psychopathy is not restricted to one sect.
@john heiskell The two examples given were carried out by Protestant fanatics. Also you don't have to be a psychopath to do this kind of thing or other acts of extreme sadism. An ordinary person can be compelled to do it if urged on by authority.
There's a great Terry Pratchett quote about that:
"There are hardly any excesses of the most crazed psychopath that cannot easily be duplicated by a normal kindly family man who just comes in to work every day and has a job to do."
@@MrClickity Yeah, people used to travel some distance to watch a hanging, drink ale and snacks and have a great day out with the family. Old grannies would bring their knitting to watch the guillotine. Men of wealth and means pay to watch snuff movies. Sadism is part of the human condition... apparently.

Wow that skull crusher really is one of the absolute worst & most barbaric things I have ever seen or heard of!
😬😟😲😵😳🥺
I wonder how the people applied the torture was able to live with themselves
Depends on what the person did
In medieval times death was seen as common as eating bread for dinner so while they were scared of death they weren’t fearful of it. In fact some people celebrated wars and would have parties before killing hundreds of men and would continue to party afterwards. Death was like a slight inconvenience really. Your friend of ten years died? Oh well continue drinking you’ll forget it soon 🍻
The torturers probably didn't choose thier job and had no choice.
I bet they looked for "qualified" individuals who had so much of "god's presence" about them that they could "suffer" in his name.
@@thehermitman822 aka sadistic bastards
Man evolves. He advances in medicine, art, architecture and newer and more efficient ways to make people suffer.
Gotta love progress!
As a species, if we'd spent as much time on improving society as we did coming up with new and painful torture and punishment techniques we would probably be living on Mars by now!
Pretty much.
Well said.
It doesn't take a lot of effort to come up with these torture ideas, all you need is an overabundance of empathy combined with a complete and total lack of sympathy.
i half agree. You can get faster results with the consequence of pain/death. Being purely peaceful is alot slower process, even though when being patient and peaceful with someone can get you more accurate results or info. Pain and the threat of death gets results done alot faster.
I hate humanity. We deserve extinction. Maybe a better species can replace us.

Another great insight into the medieval period. I wonder if these tortures were seen as a powerful deterrent or a means of keeping the authority of the feudal system alive through fear?

Death and torture is just something I try to avoid in general.
One could say this episode was worth the weight...
Nice
I can't believe how many different torture methods there were. People are really sick.
You had me and gruesome this week 🥰
I love these videos!!!!
Literally cracked under pressure 🥁🥁
I can just hear every bone cracking and breaking simultaneously.Such a lovely thought!
I literally cannot wrap my head around the idea of a person standing by as they watch another fellow human in such unimaginable pain and doing or even feeling absolutely nothing?? The images presented alone make me feel really uneasy
The poor elephants! They are clever and sensitive creatures
They are also extremely violent if needs be. Sometimes they would gore buffaloes or thrash other animals if they even look at them funny. Trust me i live near an elephant reserve park and its not uncommon to get news of some antelope or monkey trampled to death. They even kill humans without provocation sometimes, though its not by trampling usually, but by just tossing the human aside. Trust me if you are on foot and you spot an elephant within 50 meters, you will not be able to outrun it and it will charge at a surprising pace. Also, the video talks about domestication of elephants, which is incorrect. Elephants are tamed wild animals. Even the most docile and friendly tamed elephant has to be treated with utmost respect and caution, one wrong step and you would end up being the statistics of people who got killed by an elephant.
@@RaptorMaitre wow. That is so interesting! Thank you

During the Salem Witch Trials, Giles Corey became the only person to be executed this way in the United States.

"I feel conflicted"
A similar for-thought was put in to when a person was being put in the electric chair. They put a blindfold/tape over the eyes for a similar reason.

Same here man
Ever been to St. Augustin Florida? They have a pretty good torture museum there. Most are original pieces. Takes about 2 hrs.
One wonders at the minds that first came up with various torture methods.
What medieval punishment would you not want to avoid?
Great video, cheers.
This was too emotional; I was crushed…
Never understood why anyone would willingly get captured in those days. The sheriff comes to my home I'm going out with a wooden spoon or harvesting tool going full postal. No one was ever really proven innocent back then.
You know it's fucked up enough when Elizabeth the First herself condemned the punishment.
The fact that people thought they had justification for this type of sadistic retribution is worrying because we are evolutionarily exactly the same people as they were and will be for the next hundred thousand years at least.
Please bring this back! Lots of kids in Chicago deserve it.
Thx I will avoid these punishments from now on
All those poor people, or anyone who has suffered, rest in peace
Symbolic for what is going on actually, thank you!
No quite medieval --
"He gave them but two words. 'More weight' he said, and then he died" ... "He was fearsome man was Giles Corey".
This practice still happens, only a few decades ago my teacher would PRESS ME for answers.
Oh good finally a new post of madness
I am feeling the pressing need to watch this video
One of my ancestors was the last person to be pressed to death (whole body version) in England. Aug 1604 at York Castle
so in those days when someone tells you that they "have a crush on you", better run as fast as you can!
"Warning: gruesome descriptions, etc."
Sir, I'm here for that reason. I'll enjoy. And I did subscribe!
Whoopee! So much fun!
Although these times were barbarous and cruel, this was particularly awful, Donie
In England and the English colonies, pressing wasn't technically a sentence - or even a punishment - as the victim had not been convicted of any crime. Refusing to enter a plea wasn't a crime in itself.
In effect it was pre-judicial torture to induce the victim to enter a plea, as a trial could only proceed after a plea was entered. The intention was not to kill the victim but rather to persuade them to enter a plea so the legal process could continue.
You are such a great narrater! It would be nice to have a chance to meet you. The guy all over the nails at 4:51 is that real from history or from the torture movies?
It's the same today as it was then: the company of other human beings is the most dangerous threat that the average person faces on a daily basis.
Please do a few segments on Asian medieval torture methods. Torture was prevalent everywhere.
The Spanish also had their ways . .

the cruelty of man knows no bounds.
Hannah and Tomas Eames were accused at Salem but luckily got freedom and were only jailed, not murdered.
Humans are never as clever as when they’re causing pain to others.
It is incredible which degenerate things people came up with. Absolutely horrifying.
Hold up...so this is where the phrase "I pressed them for info" comes from???
No.
Giles Corey was not a good person but his defiance is pretty badass
I wouldn't say thst. Everything written about the guy is from the perspective of people that believed him a witch. Kinda hard to put too much credence into their statements.

Humanity is such a disgusting creation. After seeing this I think the world would be better of without us.
So if they'd still be using these forms of execution to this day, do you think the more sadistic rulers would be playing that one specific song by Queen on endless repeat while the execution is carried out...?

An execution by elephant crushing the condemned's head is depicted in the 1996 Indian film _Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love_.
Genghis Khan took it to a new level. When he defeated an army the generals of the defeated army would be laid down and a wooden platform placed on top. Genghis and his generals would have their feast on the platform. A slow death for the prisoners underneath and they could hear the party above them as they crushed

Elephants arent domesticated. They can be trained but those are not the same thing.
If youre training an elephant then you're likely also feeding it and chances are it is effectively domesticated. He never equated the two.
