      I would like to drop the "pathological", though. Pathological liars have a pathology, a disorder that causes their lies and many of them do feel shame. These pricks, otoh, have deliberately chosen to perpetuate lies they knew to be destructive. They're not pathological, they're intentional. And they need to be stopped with none of the mercy you'd show someone who couldn't help themselves.

      @Dave Spanksalot I was unaware of this. The Australian one I watched was about the Japanese military build up and their fortification of the southwestern parts of the island chain. Seemed pretty good, talked about how the locals of Okinawa feel, told their horror stories about hiding in the jungle and a large percentage dying from disease and starvation. So the elder generation was heartbroken and protesting while the younger generations were pretty for the fortification efforts. Also talked to some Japanese enlisted. I felt it was pretty good. Showed both sides and gave their motivations, damn near no opinion or fear baiting.
      I know this is one example and doesn't represent the whole of Australian news broadcasting. Just thought that my limited snap shot into it was pretty good.
      Plus for Australian news I usually watch Friendlyjordies and BoyBoy. Since I don't live in the country, and they all seem like stand up dudes, I feel like it's a pretty good summary of what's going on.

      Two thoughts:
      1. Who is going to tell them what they are listening to is lies? Fox News isn't going to self report itself. Its what needs to happen but it won't.
      2. These people want their news source to tell them what they want to hear, which is the dilemna fox news is facing. It can't keep lying without repercussion because it will get sued, but it can't stop lying or the people it created will go to a news network that will. We drive these people farther and farther down the rabbit hole because they've hooked them on social crack.

      @Khronogi Рік тому +1

      Well its less about admiting wrong and more about gaming psychology for material gain. They know they are wrong, they won't /publically/ admit it because it hurts their profit line. When these people are under oath they admit its all lies, because lying would be drastically against their profit line in that case.
      Essentially they have taken Hitler's playbook of 'tell a lie and keeping telling that lie until people think its the truth' and just ran with it. The unfortunate part for fox news is that they've come to this crossroads where if they keep lying they get sued but keep the audience, but if they stop lying they lose the audience and dont get sued. They've dug their own grave, and common sense and courtesy warned them all along.
      Its been long enough of a time that people have forgotten the reasons why things are sins, rather than them just being sins. The why is so much more important. In this case they've fallen into the greed pit, and they were warned not to.

    As a South African I am extremely fascinated by American politics and became more so during the 2020 lockdowns...better than any TV series. It was then that I discovered Rupert Murdoch's FOX News. At first I did not realise that they were an actual real news network reporting on current events. I honestly thought that they were a Comedy Central type of network. Then I was disgusted by them, their politics and style of reporting because I saw parallels between them and the Rwandan media during the Rwandan genocide. The Hutu's used the media as a propaganda tool to spread fear, hatred and dehumanise people. How is FOX news any different? Many of the journalists, dj's, people, etc who spread this propaganda were charged for war crimes and have been punished for it. Will the same happen with the Rupert Murdoch's, Tucker Carlson's, Sean Hannity's, Laura Ingram, etc of America and/or FOX news? Or will they be treated differently because they are not African. There was also a story on a man with MS who was trying to get treatment and the powers that be were preventing things that could help. So any format that gives education to the young people would be helpful. The whole waiting for prosecution of Donald Trump's crimes is like a soap opera. I knew he was guilty on January 7th, but it has gone like the speed of a soap opera. You can skip watching for three years, and pick up right where you left off. That is so discouraging. I hate soap operas and reality TV. I am 76, I hate most TV. I am always looking for something funny. Jon you have a gift. I have always liked your shows. You remind me of my nephew. He is funny too. Not a lot to laugh about these days.

    • @MyContext
      @MyContext Рік тому

      @@apexnext For any particular issue it is rarely the case that there are only two sides. Worst, it is rarely the case that the various perspectives are equal, since the adjudicating factor is about what is valued by the individual and often hoped and/or assumed in varying degrees that such value is actually shared.
      However, if it is the case that one has little value of the concerns entailed in the details of the various perspectives then I can see why there would be a dismissal of whatever point being raised (or at least that is how whataboutism resonates), since the point entails a declaration of concern(s) which is rarely exhaustive, but is the point being expressed at a given moment.
      I do hold many points of value with regard to myself and society as a hold (and more) which I find various issues to be a direct assault. The systemic lying presented by Fox being one of the more dangerous of assaults. The danger is multifaceted. However, I will give you the highlights since ideally you don't see the gravity of the concerns in play as opposed to simply not caring.
      The idea of a democracy requires various levels of trust of the various institutions. The actions of Fox erodes trust which has the potential to cascade into dismantling trust over the the journalistic field. The moment the public has no trust of the various institutions, the public also ceases to advance, since they will be subject to the acceptance of all sorts of nonsense.
      Everyone of us has what I would consider a fairly narrow pool of knowledge. Generally an individual can have a broad swath of understanding but little depth or great depth but rather narrow overall understanding, since each requires a fair amount of time. Thus, we must trust in what is being presented from a wide variety of others due to simply not having such knowledge personally.
      The moment one is effectively in a constant state of distrust, one is also open to accepting all sorts of fringe nonsense that happens to resonate with whatever knowledge pool one happens to have.
      It will always be the case that there are disagreements, but the idea that there is systemic activity to deceive, the whole idea of honest engagement goes up in smoke as well as dismissing the idea of civil society, since the idea of dishonest actors can quickly degenerate into violence and/or more deception causing more decay insofar as how I view such as state. I will grant that there are some who would quite pleased with the disintegration of society and the country as a whole. I would not be.
      My review of my friend is to determine exactly what he means/understands, since I get the sense that he doesn't understand the gravity of the various issues as I see them and the question is whether it is a issue of him not seeing it or not caring about it.

    Yes, they have no sense of shame (they also have no sense of humor), but what amazes me, really, is how professional and proficient they are at projection. I don't understand how they got to be so good at that. Newt Gingrich wrote the book, literally wrote the MAGA manual. But they've gotten so much better at it over the years.

      The main critique of Noam is that he's always wrong and that's why nobody has him as a pundit on tv: Everyone who might spit some spin on the circus isn't even wrong.

    The idea of a News Hall of Fame cracked me up. Edward R. Murrow . . . Walter Cronkite . . . Tucker Carlson.

      I miss Walter Cronkite. I watched all the Watergate hearings. I had a baby at the time. They all treated each other with such respect. The guilty and the innicent spoke in a respectful manner. I am old, and I miss those days. Although the news back, then was awful. The racism awareness, the assasinations, the Vietnam War, ---much like to today. People were all worked up and problems were everywhere. The news media had a different tone, though.

      @@Jess-kz2wn Yes. That was before news media was bought out and aggregated by huge corporations like Sinclair and the Murdoch boys. Walter Cronkite talks a lot about that change in the last third of his autobiography; if this interests you, I recommend it. He was a star but saw the writing on the wall: a few stars making lots of money, so they'd ally with the wealthy class. Corporate heads starting to tell news casters what they could say. More commentary, less investigation. Crappy pay for news workers that weren't stars.

    If your parents helped get you into a school, how do you not feel like a failure? Even your parents are saying, " they aren't smart, but can you ignore the stupidity if we purchase a new track turf?"

      I think it'll work itself out if we stop thinking that graduating from those schools is some accomplishment and think that everyone from those schools is a shitbag who doesn't know what they are talking about. Then the school isn't worth anything anymore.
