As a former JTAC, I had the privilege of calling in close air support missions from a variety of weapon systems. I utilized A-10 Warthogs, C-130 Spooky, Spectre and Ghostrider platforms, among many others. I can't emphasize enough the feeling of security that comes over you knowing a gunship is overhead. These great birds and their awesome operators have saved countless American lives... including mine.
That is a lot of gun maintenance. A bout..a week? Cleaning Barrels and Sights. The best is "Cold Firing" to align all the guns to 1 sight. Pilot has a serious twist to the Left.
This is a close support aircraft, and like the Warthog, it is a master at its craft! Of course, it can only operate in a secure air space! So if you see it or hear it, you've already lost the battle! A serious nightmare for the enemy
Having this bird providing close air support gives me a warm fuzzy feeling all over. I imagine that the polar opposite is true for the enemy in the general area.
It was interesting, flying up-and-down the trail in Laos at night and looking down and suddenly seeing that burning rope going from the air down to THE ground. And you knew it was a specter gunship.
I worked in the high Arctic servicing these incredible aircraft but not in a war bird but as a freighter. The loads we could put in them was so much heavier than the design #'s. Great aircraft with even greater crews.

"cart start" in my mind refers to the self-contained APU that were used to pressurize the manifold before the fans were lit off. By the late 1960s, APUs were pretty much std on rhe new generation small and large aircraft: 727, 737, 747. As I remember, DC-8 had APUs, but 720, 707, 717 did not.... How can any of those ammunitions be accurate assuming there is turbulence from the engines, natural turbulence from the wind, an airplane that is not static, the type of ammo loaded on the plane and the distance to the target. It appears they are not actually aiming at a specific target. How much protection does the the plane itself have? It appears to me it wouldn’t be very difficult to shoot one of the planes down 0:58 using some type or guided missile.
I really don't see how this plane could survive in battle with the highly advanced anti-aircraft weapons most nations have today. I think it's obsolete, that plane would be a sitting duck against China or Russia.
The AC-130 is a fantastic aircraft, but commanded by the worst officers. Starting without complete target information leads to catastrophe : shooting and bombing an international hospital of "Doctors Without Borders" for nearly one hour. Incredible incompetence!
We never took off without full preflight situational updates plus interlink allowed us to be updated inflight. Mission planning is a must! It’s the ground controllers that call in CAS mission changes don’t see what we see from the air, there are multiple verifications before firing or bombing can begin. You are under informed!
@@marcusbutzin8368 The official report states the opposite, plus the ground controller had no sight to the target, and did not mention this to the airplane. Minor mistake: the video surveillance saw, that there was similar building (the real target) but did not report to the rest of the crew. Basically also bad organization: The command staff in Afghanistan was not informed, so when the hospital phoned to the US forces in Kabul nobody knew what actually happened. In the end nobody was sentenced for the breaking of vital rules of engagement.
