Thank you for this video. It looks like you had a great campout. That MSS must be a good system, if a little bulky/heavy, still, great for rougher situations.
I have since retired the old MSS, I either go with a 100% wool blanket or my down quilt. But I did love that sleep system. Maybe I'll use it again one day just for fun. I thank you for watching, take care my friend.
I'm not sure if I like it or not.I need to try it some more and maybe tweak it a little. That was the very first time I tried it so I can't judge just yet. Thanks for watching and take care.
Nice video - just found your channel - love winter camping!!!!! I use the same setup with the tarp. I too use to have the "wrong" tarp but then I purchased the AquaQuest 10x10 tarp. Man what a difference - yes it is a bit pricey but it is built like a tank. I have got to get one of those military sleep systems.
Glad you found me. I too love winter camping. I just got the BCUSA 10x10 tarp in today, haven't tried it yet.The only con I have with the MSS is it's confining on me, but I think it's probably supposed to be. Other than that it's great I've used it many times in very cold temps once at -40* including wind chill and I stayed very comfortable. Thanks for watching and for commenting take care.
Just going over the videos you have made getting ideas from your experience. Your gear has changed quite a bit sense you posted this video. Knife, hatchet, tarp, pack and I'm sure a lot more stuff I haven't noticed. It's good to see your evolution as time goes by. Keep up the good work.
Yes my gear has changed a good bit over the years. I'm getting closer to where I want to be ( I think ), lol. Thanks for watching my friend, take care.
lone_woodsman, So far I have purchased a Tentsmiths trap like the one you have after watching you construct various configurations using it. It is a beast for sure. My tarp appears to be a little darker brown than the one you have but lighten up after being in the Sun. A new pack is next but I'm not sure the Frost River IR large or jr would fit me the best. I'm 5'11" and 200 lbs. I have read that the senior, like the one you have, is made for taller guys than me. I like the Duluth Packs Bushcrafter as well but it is even more expensive than the FR.
The Tentsmiths tarp is awesome, it's one of my favorites pieces of gear. I'm sure you'll love it. As for the pack yes I have the Sr. and I am kinda tall I'm 6'2'' and it fits me very well. But you also need to consider other factors such as how much gear you plan on packing in it, the time of year you camp most and for some people the weight. The reason I say about the season is just simply because in the winter which is when I like to camp you need more room for gear than you would in the summer. Not to say you can't use a bigger pack in summer, because I do. But in my opinion you can't go wrong with Frost River.
When I when I saw you crossing the creek I wonder "does his wife know he's doing this?"... Then I saw it was shallow..lol... Never heard "snap" the doorway before..kinda cool...liked the tarp set up & fire lay out. I tried steak directly on the coals once..kinda gritty (not for me) Truly enjoy your videos thank you for the tag along : )
My wife used to get nervous, but she has gotten used to what I do. I would have liked this tarp set up if it wasn't for the center pole. I'm a bigger guy and it didn't give me much room. Thanks for watching and take care.
I use a similar set up and did a video on it in the snow (backyard). If you don't have a tie out point use a marble or a rounded stone under the material, wrap it around the marble and tie a knot from your line around the bottom of the marble, instant tie out for a guy line. This will not damage the tarp and is easily removed. I keep a couple of .45 cal bullets (bullet only, no casing) in my pack just in case I need a tie out where there is not one. I like my steak well done...😃 I also use the Mil MSS bag. Heavy but warm and easy to break down for different seasons. 👍 Great Video... 👍👍
Yeah they call that a button. I've used them before. I like a bloody steak, lol. The mss is heavy, but your dead on it's warm and adaptable. Send me a link on your video. I'd like to check it out. Thanks for watching.
ua-cam.com/video/4PrOzjjB8QA/v-deo.html I did not stake out the sides in the video. The whole thing was spur of the moment on a challenge to build an igloo... I did this instead. lol
Thanks Jeff, I'm gonna try this set up again when my new tarp comes. On this particular outing I didn't really like it that much. There wasn't much room to move around inside. But it does look cool. Thanks for watching brother take care.
I did the same set up a while back when, I did a cold weather camp out with my buddy. The design went up and came down easily.... However, I'm with you. It didn't seem like enough room on the inside and it was difficult to move around inside to get stuff some. In the cold weather that's a big deal.. you might spend more time inside than out, once the firewood is prepped
Yeah I agree. In the summer this set up might not be that bad.I prefer a modified plow point in the winter. It has the space I need for me and my gear and I don't have to crawl around on my hands and knees to move around. Thanks for watching, take care.
I saw this tarp set up on a bunch of videos and thought it looked cool, so I had to try it. I did have to re-adjust the front a small bit, but other than that it went up pretty easy. I wasn't a fan of it though, not much room for a big guy to move around in. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.
GOOD VID JUST A LIL INSIDER INFO ON COOKING STEAKS OVER THE COALS MYSELF I LIKE A RARE STEAK SO IT'S ONLY ON THEM FOR ABOUT 2MINS. EACH SIDE DID YA LIKE THAT TARP SET UP MYSELF I'M NOT A GROUND SLEEPING KINDA GUY I RUN AN OLD MEX. MADE HAMMOCK IN THE WINTER I JUST SET IT LOWER TO THE GROUND AND RUN THE TARP COVER UNDER IT AND THEN DO THE STANDARD TOP RIDGE LINE RUN
Thanks for the tip on the steaks. As for the tarp shelter, I could see myself liking it if the tarp was much bigger. It was very cramped inside, for me anyway. And I'm in the process of rigging up a winter hammock set-up as we speak. I've been sleeping in my hammock indoors for awhile now and I'm really liking it.I have 3 blown discs in my back and it really helps with that.So here in the near future I will be doing more hammock vids. Thanks for watching.
When I started "solo" camping...my family FREAKED . lol ( like I don't have enough sense to choose my sites WISLY...smh)... Now that I have started "back pack traveling" (carry on luggage only & highly rated hostels) freaking out all over again...lol... I am always trying out new or updating my camping gear....beats sitting in a bar😇👍 You're lucky it's always possible to find a woman who will put up with an adventurous man.... Not so easy to find a man who will put up with an adventurous woman, or even go with😔
I too am always updating my gear. I'm almost 100% satisfied with my current kit. And he's out there somewhere probably hiking some of the same trails you do. And as far as sitting at the bar goes, I couldn't agree with you more on that. Thanks for watching and take care.
The only complaint I have are the tie outs, I just don't like the placement and I would like more. Other than that it's a good tarp. I haven't had any leak issues with it and it offers good coverage. For the price I paid it is a very good tarp. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.

Very nice tarp as well. Thanks for the info.
No problem, if you have any other questions on it just ask, like I said I've had it for a while now.

Thank you very much, winter is almost here again and I look forward to more videos like this one. Thanks for watching.
After two years what are your thoughts on the Snugpak Tarp,
The only complaint I have are the tie outs, I just don't like the placement and I would like more. Other than that it's a good tarp. I haven't had any leak issues with it and it offers good coverage. For the price I paid it is a very good tarp. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.
