Aussie saddle maker here - In defence of old time high quality leather belts. If a solid cowhide leather belt is made by a competent leather worker such as a saddle maker, harness maker or bridle maker, who knows the principles of belt making and who uses a strong high quality buckle made of solid brass, solid German silver, solid bronze, solid copper alloy, solid stainless steel, the belt will last for 25 years plus.
I know this cos two years ago, two belts I had made in the 1990s came back to me and were still serviceable. One had been worn for 27 years, the other 23 years. I gave the owners a new belt each to convince them to part with their first belt. Even then, I had to 'twist the arm' of one of the owners as he did not want to let it go! :-)
The vid presenter complaining about belts where the adjusting holes started to fall apart, that is a well known problem with belts which are two piece or more and not made of one piece solid leather. I do not know enough about ratchet belts to comment, but I do recommend staying away from belts with stitching around the edge, or where the edge is thinner than the body of the belt (a sign the leather has been glued together - again, unlikely to last long).
I have been in the leather making business for 40 years - and still learning. Got fooled by a claimed leather belt two years ago sent to me by a supplier, It turned out to be made of polyurethane, but the finish was so good, it looked like leather. The smell of the PU was the clue that it was not leather. Again this PU belt did not last long.
Thanks for taking the time for reading my comment, and thank you to the vid maker who is helping his viewers with his opinions on the featured belt.

I don’t understand why some people don’t wear belts at all. They have no idea how stupid they look, with their pants down around their knees. Looks absolutely ridiculous.
Meanwhile, a belt just tops off your outfit. A gentleman wearing a belt typically looks well groomed, and well put together.

I own two different brands but am not all that impressed with the quality of the leathers. I keep going back to my top-grain leather conventional belts. IMO, the best variably adjustable belts are good old fashioned fabric web belts. They come in various colors, widths, and textures. Also, the buckles are interchangeable in the manner of ratchet belts.

ratchet belts are great. Slide Belts makes a hanger that will hold four at a time. This hanger will also work for Anson belts. You do notice a weight difference though. I have swapped out all of my belts for ratchet belts. Slide Belts start at $38 and I think Anson start $50

Kore definitely makes the best quality ratchet buckles and track belts. I was looking for a SOLID stainless steel ratchet buckle.... the plated ones eventually wear off. I FOUND IT! The Kore solid stainless buckles with a full-grain leather belt. You can't beat them. All the other companies are plated.

I've been wearing the same Kore belt for 6 years straight. I bought mine back in June 2013 when they just launched the company on Kickstarter. It's the Evolve stainless buckle and black full-grain leather belt and I've been wearing it ever since. Never looked back. The belt finally began looking worn out so I ordered a new leather belt a couple of week's ago but kept my original buckle cause it still works good and looks great. But man... that original belt really held up with a lot of abuse! Can't recommend highly enough!

I got my first kore belt when they were on Kickststarter a few years back and its stood the test of time. Leather and buckles still look nice today. They have a lot more cool buckle styles now so I got 2 more myself and one for my dad. My teenage nephew has the anson and a mission belt that my sister got him but the buckles not as good. It's a kids belt. The kore belts are made more for a man. Just my two cents

Ben: I have bought a number of Men's Ratcheting Belts. I have spent anywhere between $15.00 - $50.00. Although the more expensive one (Kore Essentials) the Leather is superior. However, I have also had annoying problems that you did not talk about with the KE Belt. Two main Problems: 1: The track on the rear is quite shallow. This allows the Belt buckle to move off and go to a larger size that you did not experience. 2: Just as guilty, is the teeth on the buckle that is supposed to stay on the track to keep the Buckle attacked to the Belt you want. Most of these, once you adjust it to your preference, Again, it comes off the track, and makes the Belt more trouble then it is worth. I am quite surprised that you never encountered these problems. I am now disillusioned about Ratcheting Belts. No matter what brand you buy, the Buckle attaches to the Belt with small Teeth. In addition, the tracks are all the same. No real difference. A copycat belt buckle, with all the same track. They are not heavy duty, and they do just come off the Track. I only wish that I could find them with a more heavy duty Buckle & teeth, and a better, thicker Belt Track track that really stays put. Fo9r now, I will continue to search for one that is different & not copy cat designs.

Ben, what are your thoughts on a military-style webbing belt? They seem, to me, very similar to a ratchet belt while sacrificing some appearance (typically cloth as opposed to leather). Also, they usually have a classic "fixed" buckle. Personally, they are far more comfortable over standard, hole-buckle belts.

  • @AmericanVoyager
    @AmericanVoyager 5 років тому

Sure, the advantages are not in dispute. The down sides are a bit under-stated however; and the value is very much disputed. For any tradional belt that's constructed from quality leather, (on average about $100 each), (e.g. Allen Edmunds) they last for years, if you take care of them, or even use leather-lotion on them once or twice a year. That keeps any creasing to a realistic and attractive minimum.
As this author mentions, most folks aren't going to keep switching belt buckles on these track-belts anyway.
The other problem with these types of belts, is that the track wears down on the area you use the most, and the teeth that secure the buckle on the other [permanent] end, often become loose or undone. This can release the belt from the buckle, unexpectedly. Obviously, this would never happen with a trad belt.
At the end of the day this type of belt is only slightly different, than the belt that would come with your average Boy-Scout uniform.
Finally, you're not going to loosen your belt too much; but rather, you're going to undo your pants button (if you over-eat) and keep your belt [snug] enough to keep your pants up.
It's all preference, but for me...the premium traditional belts, look a lot cleaner and like you can afford to spend more than 30 bucks on a Eagle-Scout belt.

As a big (fat) guy, the biggest 'con' for ratchet belts isn't mentioned in this video. The ratchet works great until you stress it too often. My experience has been that there are 2 weak points in the design: 1) The tiny end of the belt that you 'size' gets gripped by some teeth on the buckle end. These teeth do not penetrate all the way through the leather of the belt, so on some belt designs they tear off a layer of the belt and strip out of the buckle periodically. On other brands, they do go all the way through - but there are too many teeth - and they sufficiently weaken the leather by perferating all the way through it that it causing the tiny tip to tear off. (Again, this is an artifact of cinching the belt very tightly in order to hold up my pants over my fat belly, but this happens and is frustrating. If they would simply allow you to pull the end of the belt through an inch or more, I suspect this problem would go away.) 2) The plastic ratchet on the belt. Because they are plastic, the more you use them, the more they wear down. If they were metal or ceramic I don't think they'd wear out as easily as the plastic.
Also, not really a 'con', but a preference - it would be nice if the ratchet caught a little closer to the tip of the belt. I recall in the military belts, the ability to barely have the end come through the buckle, so there was zero left-over to double into the first belt loop. I've found on some of my slacks, the first belt loop is variable distance from the centerline of the slacks, and it would be nice to size the belt so it precisely fits, and doesn't need to double up to the first belt loop...

First calling this a ratchet belt is like calling a zip tie a ratchet plastic strap, this is a quick-release slide belt! To be a ratchet belt, the buckle has to perform the tightening function. Just like how a ratchet strap works. You get it to a certain point and the ratchet has to be the one that takes over the tightening of the strap.

Kore A+ for quality and buckle choices for guys. You just can't beat them. I had 2 anson belts but they're just not as solid and buckle selection is inferior. My 2 cents on the topic.

Had my belts for about 10 years. Had 1 black and 1 brown strap and both are just about gone now. Looking to buy a new leather belt cos I already got 6 or 7 buckles

I love them, 1/4 inch adjustable and holes wear out faster the buckles are easy to swap and they look soo good

I see a ton of these ratchet belts under various Chinese suppliers on Amazon. My question is are they knockoffs, or are the brands above just buying the belts from China and re-branding them?

I really like the ratchet belt. It looks sooo much nicer without the holes.
It's very easy to adjust the size. Get a long one and then trim it for the optimum fit.
I get mine on-line and I've found the $8 belts do not look good more than a year.
The $15 belts last a couple of years.

Hey Ben great video. Would you say that kore essentials belts are practical and appropriate with a formal suit? As far as the leather finishing and color, buckle finishing and color, and belt width / thickness?

An alternative to ratchet belts are the Grip6 belts. They have Nylon strap so they don't replace leather as far as look but they far surpass ratchet belts in terms of practicality. They hold by friction and have no mechanisms or moving parts. They are very minimalist.

Kore belts are fantastic! I love mine and cannot believe all belts aren't made this way. Holes are stupid! Now I just need at least 2 more:)

I've got to switch. I have lost 65 pounds with another 15 to go, and my belts number 1 don't fit anymore and number are worn the hell out. I can never get a belt with holes exactly right either. I have to try one of these ratchet belts.

Ratchet belts in my opinion look more aesthetically pleasing because there’s no breaks in the appearance of the belt

I’m a super slim Asian dude (28” waist), so it is nigh impossible to find regular belts that fit without heavy modification. Ratchets are absolutely essential for me.

@Falcon its more of nigh impossible to find regular belts that fit comfortably out of box. I also discovered that my waist is actually 26”. So that was where my belt problems came from.
