  • A fish farm feed pipe washed ashore on the beautiful Wester Ross MPA Summer Isles in the North West Highlands, then sat for over a year breaking up and generating microplastics.
We went out and got it.
It took a fair few hours, lots of work and achieved over 110 meters of pipe being brought ashore.
We are asking why there isn't legislation to induce the multi-million pound fish farm industry to take greater preventative steps to stop this happening: collect it themselves or fund removal. It is way beyond what kids and other community volunteers can do.
Currently the salmon farming industry (mostly Norwegian-owned) makes hundreds of millions of pounds a year in the Highlands and Islands but this industrial waste is washing ashore and being left to volunteers to clean up. Not right, not sustainable and not right.
