      I mean if someone still has one it will get the job done, but its gonna bottleneck most gpus. But its adequate, I still reccomend upgrading to at least a ryzen 1200 if you can afford it. But with ddr4 ram being a bit expensive, I can understand why people would wait. The cpu, motherboard, and ddr4 can cost a lot. It took me a little while to get my ryzen 1300x because ram was so expensive.

      That's the thing, as we know the processor is used more in the lower resolutions. So an older processor might actually fare better in 4K than in 1080p/720p. At higher resolutions the strain is taken to the video card and there is less things for the CPU to do. Too bad TimmyJoe didn't realise this.

    Still no Northbridge or Hyper Transport overclocking. I've overclocked a few Phenom II cpus... dual core, triple core, quad core and hex core... pure core clocks do not make for a optimal overclock. Tried saying this on the last video, all three make up the trinity of Phenom II overclocking.
    It's not going to make up for missing instruction sets, but, NB helps memory bandwidth and latency, while HT helps core to core communications. Hyper Transport is somewhat similar to the infinity fabric... except it's on its own overclockable multiplier and not based on ram speed.

    • @0cyb3r0
      @0cyb3r0 5 років тому +2

      What I found out when I was doing my first overclocks ever on my old Athlon II X2 245 was that when I tried to increase the core clock by itself, to say, 20% up I would get worse results when I used the "premade" 10% overclock profiles. So I figured that overclocking these things is a bit more complex that just pressing the core clocks up.

    • @shizzig1781
      @shizzig1781 5 років тому

      @@KingHalbatorix It would be awesome if AMD did that. I have a feeling a combination of the infinity fabric and memory controller, might be part of what screws Ryzen over when it comes to high speed ram. A silicon lottery for the memory controller and a silicon lottery for the infinity fabric.
      A bit like some phenom chips were touchy when it came to Hypertransport being raised.

    Honestly it did a lot better than I expected... back when the processor was still fairly current in 2011 I built what I considered to be a decent rig for a client with a phenom ii x6 (or the x4 with the 2 extra cores unlocked in BIOS, which you could do), an ssd, and a 560 ti I think. He ran a construction company and wasn't a very demanding user... I'm sure he's still happy with the machine lol. With an SSD and for just internet stuff there's nothing wrong with it to this day, but of course no one is going to be using them for modern games. Still interesting to see what would happen if you tried... good video as always.

I also want EDF5, and i'm not convinced it'll run either, EDF4.2 has been fixed to run on Phenom post-release, but originally required new instructions that the processor lacks. theres a special place in my heart with the phenom II x6 1090t as its my brothers first gaming computer build back in like 2010 when I was in like 5th grade and I got major into computers because of that. Specifically why im still personally rocking the fx 8320 still, but 2019 may or may not be its final year with me, idk yet, I've been rocking this cpu for about 7 years now. It still works really well for what I use it for and thats all I need but at the same time it is really starting to show its age when I find my self starting to really push the overclocks lately when I know I can have a lot better for fairly cheap now adays, because it has been like, literally 9 years I've spent using computers generally with this level of cpu performance and my brothers newer ryzen 1600 throws it in the trash.

Although however because I am using the GTX 1080 video card, I am able to play some single player games pretty well believe it or not, to a point. However, these are my Phenom's last days, as it has been 9 years I've had it and has been demoted to 3rd PC running my projector, it's 3rd and final demotion will have it removed from its case and relegated to collecting dust next to my Q6600 and a gaggle of lesser single core systems from 1998 to 2004. Replaced my Phenom II 4X 960T with a Ryzen 5 2600 last year. It was the system bottleneck even with a budget GTX 950. I felt like this CPU was held back by its single thread performance and by its difficulty making good use of all its available cores. On the other hand, it was relatively inexpensive, it did overclock a bit, and it was fun unlocking those 5th and 6th cores.

    Hmm I wonder what the performance would be at medium detail or better yet 1440p. Wouldn't the low resolution actually force the system to be CPU dependent with that GPU? I mean sure, the instruction set needed for some new games is an issue, but I wouldn't call it dead just yet. My daily driver is a x58 Xeon in a dell motherboard with an r9 390 and it's fine in most games so cpus from that era definitely hold their own. It'll serve me well until Ryzen 2 anyway lol

    I'm not sure if it was an accident or not, but I would like to point out you flip-flopped the node size for the FX and Phenom. Piledriver/Bulldozer is 32nm and Thuban is 45nm.

    still rocking a phenom 2 x6 in 2020. it holds up when you set youre expectations to 45-60 fps in games that have allot of entities and cpu intensife parts of the game.

    You are absolutely correct about the athlon 200ge having no issues. I have one as a place holder, til the ryzen 3000 series comes out. Bein broke sucks but my 200ge, clocked at 3.825gHz with an rx580, is better than my friends fx 6300 and rx570. However skinnibench score on my 200ge is only 432...

    In my daily SFF gamer in the living room I still rock a Phenom II X4 955, 16GB DDR3, GTX 1050Ti 4GB. It still plays everything like Fortnite, World Of Tanks, Overwatch etc, but unfortunately not Apex Legends because it doesn't support the Phenom CPU, which is weird because the game is based of the Titanfall 2 game engine that works fine on Phenom II.
    I also have a Gigabyte 970 board, 8GB DDR3 and an AMD Athlon II X2 265 CPU and Phenom II X6 1055T laying around to test with.

      same here. running with a rx580 and I have very little issue.

      Same here.. the 1090T is surprisingly good, especially if you use less than high settings. I used to run a whole bunch of games on it with a really old nvidia 550GT, and later with an rx480. unless your a settings snob or play a badly optimized game like pubg no problem.

      I'm also still using my phenon x6 1090t stock (no overclock) with 8Gb DDR2 @667 Mhz (on AM2+/AM3 since Bios update), and I can play most games at 60fps, even Ark in PVP, like in this 55 seconds example (1090p): ua-cam.com/video/-BFBpwAJz58/v-deo.html
      Since last graphics card upgrade to Radeon RX 580, gaming improved a lot and I'm hoping to keep using it for a while still.

    I'm still using a Phenom II x4 955 on my gaming computer I built 10 years ago (im using a radeon 6770 GPU). While I appreciate the information in this video, your tests weren't done with the video settings that gamers will use if they are still rocking this old CPU. I have to play in low settings on all games (minus resolution and maybe 1 or 2 video settings set to medium or high). I have yet to try apex legends...... but seriously.....apex legends will error out if I try to run it?..... I'm going to have to try this for myself, because I just don't believe it. edit: I do have the Northbridge and CPU overclocked - can't remember if I have the hypertransport overclocked. Also, your video was well done, im glad to see someone revisit this cpu to see how it fares against newer games and cpu's.

    I still have my Phenom II 1090t setup. It was a damn good cpu for its time, especially overclocked. Paired it with a Radeon 6950 and it lasted me from 2010 - 2015. It still remains my Windows 7 era gaming pc.

    On most of the footage shown (Fortnite, Tomb Raider, Metro) the GPU is maxed out... so something is off with the testing method.
    I'm not sure if the mainboard, CPU or simply the OC had issues / instabilities, but some of the figures shown simply aren't representative of even a stock speed Phenom ii x6.
    I don't recommend investing into a PC with Phenoms unless it's cheap, but it's not as bad as it's shown here. A good GPU to match them would be something like the 7950 etc.
    As for the SSE missing: Those errors have been appearing in games for over 3 years and devs usually fix them... as a matter of fact the one shown from Apex Legends is kinda wrong, since the Phenom II X6 all support SSE up to 4a ... ironically the old 5400 seriex Xeons already support 4.1 and they're from like 2007.
