If your mobo can handle Xeon, get an x5650 and enjoy 6 cores and lots of overclocking. I had mine running 4.3 but it could go up to 4.5 with more vcore. I just wanted to play it safe. I had it now retired so I only kept the x5650 to frame it for all the awesome serivce. Hell of a performer even today. :D

I'd also double check that CPU cooler, it doesn't look like one for a 125W CPU. The 125W AMD CPU coolers are usually much larger, with copper and with heat pipes.

    • @Chriva
      @Chriva 5 років тому +11

It should have a bunch of heat pipes and a 60-70(can't remember exact size) mm fan on it. Rrreally noisy PITA to be honest. The fins were quite close to each other so it made the most annoying high pitched whine.
The one included looks like something for an Athlon II x2

i use stock phenom x6 cooler on my daily driver a10 5800k just because box cooler wasn't any good and that cpu was rated at 100w, at least fan don't ramp up as often , but heatpipes onlt gave arond 5 drgre celsius difference on a fully loaded cpu
for comparsion my b97 phenom II x4 is a 95w part and comparable specs to 965 (-200mhz)
also b97 have ddr2 controller while 965 does not , so it can be used on am2 boards with updated microcode
that being said some sites list 965 phenom as 140w while b99 (3,3ghz evuivalent) is only 95 w still
same goes for a10 , 5700 is locked 65w equivalent of my 5800k that is 100w so i don't known if locked cpus have simply real tpd vs unlocked cpus having it a bit overrated so you wouldn't be surprised by ded psu after oc?

This processor is amazing but mostly cause I have a cool story with it, 2 years ago my mom gifted me her old PC which didn't work, it was sorta like hey do you want this I don't need it anymore (I'm 12 at the time too) and I took it and played with it for months trying to get it to work, some research later I found out it was the motherboard, it wasn't, then I bought this CPU online for $40 and it worked! I then bought a gtx 550 and that was my first gaming PC and my bridgeway onto getting me interested in PC's, I have since built a new system with an i7-2600, gtx 1050ti, and 12gb ddr3 ram and just framed that CPU and it hangs over my monitor reminding me of where I started

This exact phenom ii x4 was my first as well. I got a ton of old junk parts for $20. Did a ton of research and cleaning. Bought a bunch of new/used parts and put my first gaming computer together for under $200 in March 2018 to play fortnite...it did a damn good job too at 4ghz. I've since upgraded to a much better GPU and to an overclocked fx8350.
I'll build another computer in another couple years but I'll definitely use the same case, which is an old school cooler master 690 or whatever that I did a deep cleaning to and gave a custom silver paint job with blue LED accents.

My rig is next level old school. 10 years ago I bought the ultimate bang for your buck CPU: a 3.2 Ghz Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition for only $90. Unlocked it from 2 to 4 cores and OC'd to 3.6Ghz. It was basically a quad that AMD sold for a lower price.
Still runs strong today, a $90, 10 year old CPU! I paired it with a Radeon HD7950 3GB, 8GB of RAM and a good SSD. Can play most games although it is starting to show its age in 2018+ titles, and usually the CPU is the bottleneck.
Will probably build an entirely new computer from scratch next year. But damn, I'm proud of this old beast. Could probably OC it further but I don't want to push an old man to its grave.

That task it performs pretty well even till this day. The machine is still alive and even has a working diskette drive! I used that to restore older projects from even an older date when I used the AthlonXP 3200+ for my DAW. Ok, that was almost 20 years ago now. Time flies.

I used a Phenom II X4 965 for almost 9 years running Windows 7 with a GTX 1050ti. It was fine for web browsing, business software, console emulators and older games. My biggest gripe is it ran hot and Sony Vegas always maxxed it out when rendering. It's amazing my new Ryzen 5 3600 PC is like 5-8X times faster than the 965 while staying cool rendering.

Phenom IIs were honestly very underrated CPUs for budget builds. There was always the craze about FX because of the 8 cores, but FX usually fared worse in games because of its lower IPC than the Phenom II. If you had a Phenom II back then, FX wasn't even worth looking at unless you had a dual core Phenom II. But for those who had the 4 or 6 core Phenoms, they usually did better than the FX counterparts. And of course, Phenom IIs could also overclock pretty well with good cooling and a good motherboard.

These Phenoms are definitely still suffice for most computing applications. Wouldn't really recommend it for the hardcore user who likes to run multiple high res monitors but for regular 1080p computer setups, it's just fine. Bit of a power hog, but I think the enthusiasts will always appreciate these. Quad core computing was such big news during at that time... Definitely a revolution in how we used PC's with high bandwidth connections.

Was digging in my basement to finally clean up all the e-waste that accumulated through the years and I stumbled upon a phenom II 955. Curious to see what it can do in 2024. One thing I noticed here is that the tiny aluminum heatsink is not gonna cut it for a 125W CPU no matter how much additional airflow the case offers. Gonna test it out soon with a proper heatsink and see if it can run anything modern. If I come up with decent results maybe it would be worth giving the old phenom another go on your channel, now that 5 years have passed since you posted this :)

You are far too harsh on the 965. I still use mine each and every day for gaming. It handles BF4 and Doom 2016 fine. It only chokes on BF1 and newer at 1080P. I intend on replacing it with a Ryzen sometime this later year when my finances are more secure. After ten years of problem free gaming I certainly feel I have gotten my monies worth. Also why are you testing the lastest games? This CPU with a decent GPU will run most e-sport or slightly less modern games like butter.

I later on bought a DeepCool Gammaxx 400 and it performs not very much better with an overclock. Perhaps it's my mothrboard fault, but 3.62Ghz is the most stable I could reach. The highest clock I ever made into the chip was about 3.78Ghz, but still very instable. I might blame on ASUS for their faulty BIOS updates, but doesn't seem like I have much to do into the bios to achieve an responsive overclocking

I have the 955 version still in daily use powering a Linux Mint 18.3 system. I put in a substantially better cooler late last year because while the old one still worked okay I just didn't trust it to handle spikes and I did not want to wait on a fan failure either. The new one is a; Enermax CPU Cooler 130W Intel/AMD with AM4 Support - ETS-N31-02. The new CPU cooler does a very good job at keeping the CPU cool even under heavy load. I will put in a SSD in that system even though it is not my personal system.

I'm still running my 965 BE because I haven't gotten around to buying a new motherboard, and basically having to rebuild a new computer (updated ram, GPU to take advantage of new stuff, etc).
Last year I did have to get something new for editing purposes, but I ended up getting a max spec i7 MS Surface Pro 7 since it was cheaper than buying a new motherboard, processor, and RAM. It does what I need it to do, and my old gaming rig can still play the games I use it for. I use my Series X for higher-end games.

I have something like that, but sightly older. I remember an old PC was given to me that had an AMD Athlon 64 x2 cpu and with a bios update, I was able to swap out for a quad core Phenom X4 9650 cpu and I have it paired with an NVIDIA GTX 285 and 3 gb ddr2 ram. I have it dual boot Windows 10 and Windows XP. Using it as a gaming PC, it can actually handle older 3d games pretty well, mainly games made up till about 2011 to 2012. In fact, I think my GTX 285 at this point is almost exactly a decade old, released in January 15th, 2009.

It put up a fight for sure . Now it's sitting in an unused system with 4GB DDR2 and a GTX 650 . I'm thinking of reviving it . First add a psu because it doesn't have one . then add an ssd to help speed up everyday stuff , and try to find used DDR2 to reach 8GB . And after that change socket and go to a newer APU . Then add a gpu and the system will be set

Should give it a go at 3.9 ghz on all cores & with a fat cpu cooler. (1.475v as max voltage btw for air is what id go for, you might be stable at a lower voltage then that though.)
northbridge & ht link speed should be at 2.4 ghz or 2.2 ghz for some extra bandwidth on ram & the cache on the processor.

I have 5 PCs I used at my house from 2700x and 8700k on the high end....my old 965 build still runs (has a 7870 ) in it. Still plays a lot of games fine, the main issue for me was my 965 was using an older DDR II board so power consumption is much higher then when using ddr3. The loss of modern bios is main reason I don’t use it more. Have to install windows 10 from a cd on my old board, because it’s doesn’t recognize Bootable windows 10 usbs (board is an old DFI LAN PARTY)
But it still fun to use.
Other side note a lot of my older stock amd fans started to die (using 15-30%) less RPMs then originally specced (blame a lot of use) swamping out for Hyper 212 lower temps and helped restore performance. When I saw your stuttering in of your tomb raiders run made me think of it. Same thing happened randomly in games, the old stock phenom fan just couldn’t do high rpms anymore.

I have upgraded my pc over the years, I got a GT1030 in 2018, and for my birthday in May of this year, I got a GTX1050. obs has been running well for the first 3 years, then it started to get worse and now I can only record minecraft (yes JUST minecraft) in 30fps at 720p.
It’s a good processor for extreme budget builds, but I would recommend a Ryzen 5 1600.

OC it, at 3.9-4.0GHz the performance in games makes a significant jump. Had it at 4GHz before I switched to ryzen 1600. Great CPU overall, but defo needs an OC + on that architecture the CPU northbridge speed bumps the speed by a lot and I mean by a lot. Had mine at around 2600 iirc, insane games speed bump and a massive cinebench bump too. Thanks for the great videos, really enjoying them!
Edit: needs a solid cooler, mine with cm v8 heated quite a lot and phenoms 2 are hard to keep stable if oc’ed once they hit ~55 degrees celsius.

I used a Phenom II X4 955 BE @ 3.7Ghz for a good few years, after using a Phenom II X3 710 @ 3Ghz. Not a bad CPU, although not one I'd recommend anymore. If you've already got one, or can get one for peanuts, it's fairly capable for older games.
Don't expect a fast CPU, because it isn't. It's 10 years old. Yes they are quite overclockable. Some Phenom II's such as the X3's and later X4's were actually based on X4's and X6's respectively, and could have their other cores "unlocked", if you had the right motherboard, and the cores actually still worked and weren't deactivated because of a fault. Look it up, it's quite a novelty.
Needless to say my old X3 710 didn't unlock on a base grade AM3+ board

I bought this motherboard/CPU combo recently for £30 on Ebay, I've paired them with a Radeon HD 7750 and installed Windows XP on the machine I built using them to play old disc based games which don't play nicely with modern OSes, it works really well for this purpose I think. I don't think I would want to play modern games on them but for mid/late 2000s games and older, these are ideal I think. The motherboard that I have is almost identical but the colouring is slightly different, not sure if just a cosmetic difference or if its a different revision from yours but anyway, I've been using mine to play Need for Speed Underground and Call of Duty 2 a lot lately, been having a lot of fun with it.
