Amazing review. I can honestly say that this is one of the best if not the best car review I've seen. Really great job! Informative, concise, and entertaining. The only negative being the wrong info on the lack of DCT on the 335i.
definitely worth it...and now that the new M3 is out, this model can be found for like $30K with decent mileage...I have a 2012 328i which I love, but I'm about to say F it and sell it for the best M3 ever made!
Po Russki unfortunately no...although I am looking for a very specific M3 (black on saddle brown, low mileage, 2011 version of idrive, EDC)...I'm getting closer though, this summer is my goal so I'll probably just compromise
Just ordered mine with a six speed manual. They can keep the paddles and double clutch. Next year's M3 is slated to go back to a twin turbo six which is why I rushed out to secure allocation for the V8. To me, a six is a step backwards.
comparing the 335is and the m3 is a little silly... if you strip away the exterior, the cars are totally different... different suspension, shocks, steering ratios, gearbox, suspension set-up, wheel tracks etc... M cars are not just engine replacements of the normal 3 series... completely different machines!
I happen to own an E92 M3 and while I will admit it’s an absolutely great car, in real world driving the 335 is equally so. Especially when modified. There are VERY FEW owners that leave their M3 stock. So, since ur going to upgrade anyway, you can get just as much street performance out of the 335. As far as maintenance they both are nightmares. Finally, talking track, neither is a good option. The M3 is an extremely expensive car to make track ready and you’ll find yourself using very few of the factory pieces. As far as that goes you’d do just as we’ll supercharging a 328 coupe, adding the same chassis upgrades the M3 will need, save a ton of money and have just as much fun.
Zombie Head That’s the most ridiculous shit I’ve ever read. If you truly embrace this logic, then strap a set of PZero’s and a big brake kit on your Prius and go prove to the world how astute you are!! Genius
Zombie Head I have built two track cars so I’d never use stock brakes or pads. However that doesn’t begin to justify your statement that “it doesn’t matter what car you have”. The basic platform that you’re basing your build on is the most important factor. What matters THE MOST is what car you have!
Zombie Head. Well, you started by saying the car itself doesn’t matter. That’s where we disagree. Putting big brakes and upgraded rubber and suspension on a shitty platform will ALWAYS wind up being wasted time and money. So while I agree that it takes proper mods to obtain success, I feel the car you’re actually modifying is the most important ingredient
Only thing I complained about E92 M3 is the engine lag. Before of the low torque, it's hard to get back to speed when you break and again trying to get back. But got my m3 tuned and now has 430NM now.
Engine lag!?. Its a high compression NA V8 with individual throttle bodies. Its one of the most responsive engines out there. You just don't know how to drive.
So what does he mean when he refers to the old gearbox from "3 or 4 years ago" being a disaster?...Have BMW changed the gearbox since the first release of the E92?
to those who say comparing 335 to m3 is stupid cause theyre so different mechanically. well yes..stock they are very different. but most people who are real car enthusiast dont buy them with the intentions of keeping them stock. and what do you upgrade? the engine, transmission, differential (both to handle the power of the engine after you modified it), gear ratios (potentially... this really comes down to more personal preference), brakes, suspension, and adding a LSD to the 335 since they didnt give it one stock. both cars are within 50 lbs of each other in curb weight in any given configuration. however dollar for dollar its far cheaper to build up to crazy power levels on the ridiculously tough n54 twin turbo engine in the 335 simply because it has factory forged internals and its boosted meaning bigger gains per mod than a NA car (stock internals have been known to handle over 800 hp at the wheels reliably). now which one is better really comes down to 2 things. budget, and desires. budget - can you afford to buy, maintain, modify, keep it fueled up and insure an m3? ALL of those things cost a bit more on a m3 vs a good bit cheaper 335. if you plan to modify the shit out of the car then you can get pretty comparable aftermarket parts that are equally good for either car as far as suspension and brakes go. you can fit massive 380 mm racing rotors with 6+ piston calipers with the right set of wheels and pretty much whatever pads you want. you can fit amazing suspension systems that can allow you to tune the handling to your style. it only cost a couple grand to throw a limited slip diff into a 335i and you get a few options as to what kind. big difference here is the engine. you can build the crap out of a 335 engine (well the n54 at least), for a good bit less money mod for mod compared to the v8 in the m3. and when you drive it normal, and set your engine mapping tune down to normal levels your fuel economy will remain excellent unlike the m3. so really a number of factors to consider there. desires - heres one simple thing... do you like the sound of the inline 6 and the spool of a turbo or do you crave some high revving v8 thunder with a louder growl at idle than the inline 6? if you plan on keeping them stock and just want a lot of performance for your money the 335i is the better car. better for daily driving. if you want more performance right out of the box and dont want to have to do very much to get a truly impressive performance level or perhaps you want to keep a warranty? then the m3 is your better choice if you can afford it. so which suits your needs and driving style better? what do you intend to use the car for? are you gonna do track days with it? so really all these things can determine whats better. for daily, or for heavy mods, since you can make everything comparable but the engine is easier to build big power id say the 335i or 335is. but if you plan to keep it mostly stock, or are concerned about a warranty, or just cant be bothered with shop time doing a build, then the m3 is definitely your choice IF you can afford it being more expensive in every single way.
I own a 2014 335i sedan and love it... but......all I think about is damm that m3 sedan would be great! The ride in my 335i is pretty harsh on 19" wheels so the m3's track inspired suspension makes me a little worried.. my 335i ride quality is really aggressive when I encounter potholes. there are many times when I slam into a small rut/pothole and I swear my rim must have shattered! it's pretty intense..if I were to do it again I'd opt for the 18" wheels.. my good buddy also has a 2014 335i and he's running 18" wheels and what a big difference it makes...
Totally agree with you on that. I have a 2015 328i with sport 19s and the side of sometimes very rough. And a friend of mine who has it with 18s feels totally different, much more luxurious.
+Jalil Waiz isn't it super rough on the 19's? how do you like your 328i? I had my car serviced a while back and I had a 328i as a loaner car and I really liked it.. it drove nice and really wasn't much slower than my 335i.. is this your first bmw?
+just82much hey.. I love this car. The interior is more refined and spacious compared to my older e46 330i which still only has 80, 000 miles lol. The new turbo 2.0 engines are awesome, and as you said, it's only slightly slower than the 3 litre. Very good girl economy too.. 35% better than e46.
Good review, up until the end. Comparing the M3 to the 335is... Naturally aspirated V8 to a twin turbo I6, completely different engine and throttle responses.
Right then where are they from ??? I think you'll find Jaguar is designed & built in Coventry in the West Midlands - which is in England part of Great Britain , both Ferrari and Lamborghini are designed & built in Italy.....now look at your atlas and you'll discover that both countries are part of Europe ! Thanks
@steverooni99 If you're buying a car to show off, then you're buying it for the wrong reasons. The M3 is so appreciated because it drives so well. Buy one for that reason, not to tell your friends you bought an M3. Better yet, buy a 335is.
That's brand new price. If you look at 2nd hand price, 335 depreciates twice more than the M3. same year, half the price of the M3, that tells you something right.
By choosing the 335is, you are missing out on the true magic that is BMW. The M division cars feel like you are driving a car from a totally different company. Or rather, the regular cars don't feel like *true* BMWs.
though I can understand why cooley would prefer a 335is over the m-car, you just can't compare a full-on m-car to a standard bmw - even to the real high end standard bmws like the 335is. anybody who has driven a real m-car will know what I'm on about, the m3 is just a completely different animal! it feels like a totally separate car, like it had hardly anything in common with a size-wise comparable "normal" bmw.
that m3 has no torque and that means you don't feel the surge when accelerating and tuned 335diesel can blow it away, so for me it's a no car just for that hollow feeling when stomping the gas pedal
Did he really call this thing manual, I guess because he used his hand, but if no clutch pedal or 3 pedals I should say its not fun or shouldn't be call manual.
+Alexie30 If you're manually choosing which gear you're in at any given moment, then it's a manual. What difference does it make if you don't need to engage the clutch yourself? The whole point of shifting a transmission is to be in control of when the car shifts. I have a 6 speed manual E46 M3 and I rev match all the time. I'm an expert at working 3 pedals but if I get an E92, I'll get the dct because it's better than having to work the clutch pedal.
+demoskunk .. hahaha. suite yourself. you miss the point mr. expert rev matching. your e46 m3 won't go unless you put it in gear whether its first or second or even 3 gear to get it going. which means manual. (manual) its a latin descending word. which means handy.. in this subject manual mean you have to use your hand( mano) to move the tick into gear while you push the clutch to let it engage. and so o. and so forth.. that's why it's call Manual transmission because you gotta get handy to make it work.
Thats because this is a car that's appreciating. The last NA M3 with the only ever v8 in it. Lots of rare things to find now these days so dont be surprised if they go even higher
In his opinion the coupe looks best its 1.Cinderalla 2. Sedan IMO 3. Convertible is heavy/slow and cut up. The sedan could of had more done externally bmw was greedy/cheap.
I strongly get the feeling this guy isn't that much of a car nut. He talks about a lot of these things like they are novel or new, when almost nothing here is new, not even 4-5 years new. Actually, not even the car is new, we get a new M3 in like a year...
Honestly, one of the best reviews by CNET. Also, one of the best CAR reviews I have ever watched!
Guys, keep them comin, and go Brian Cooley!!!
Amazing review. I can honestly say that this is one of the best if not the best car review I've seen. Really great job!
Informative, concise, and entertaining.
The only negative being the wrong info on the lack of DCT on the 335i.
A V8 that revs to 8250rpms and sounds that good is almost worth the extra 10k
definitely worth it...and now that the new M3 is out, this model can be found for like $30K with decent mileage...I have a 2012 328i which I love, but I'm about to say F it and sell it for the best M3 ever made!
kuruptzZz and did you?
Po Russki unfortunately no...although I am looking for a very specific M3 (black on saddle brown, low mileage, 2011 version of idrive, EDC)...I'm getting closer though, this summer is my goal so I'll probably just compromise

Just ordered mine with a six speed manual. They can keep the paddles and double clutch. Next year's M3 is slated to go back to a twin turbo six which is why I rushed out to secure allocation for the V8. To me, a six is a step backwards.
The M3 sounds so much better in this video then any other review...god its such a good sound!

Reviews in the early 10's were rare
8:28 WRONG! 335is comes standard with a manual, but you can upgrade to a DCT.
this is a gorgeous car! it's epicness.
I like the change in video editing, makes these look more professional...
I love the car vids anyway though
@5:02 to @5:27 he's speaks the absolute truth!
No this is the new M-DCT.. which is a double clutch unit that was introduced in the 2010 models If I remember right
CNET should put their website in the description of every video!
Thank you! someone out there still gets it!
Awsome effects in the review keep up the good job
I agree, the arguments between Clarkson and this guy would be epic on Top Gear...the real Top Gear...
335is comes with the DCT
most late 2011 335is have DTC also, just as a few last year 330 ZCP had SMG in conv as well
awesome

this was always one of my favorite bmw's
Does the 335 is have Lock speed differential? How much are they put in afterwards?
I guess that would be a plus for the M3 then.
its not a DSC trans is it? i thought BMW got a new auto? am i wrong or is this the new one?
How are you purist if you pick the automatic over the manual? That doens't make sense to me...
Still love my 2004 BMW M3
Ill pay the money for the v8 grunt, seriously makes me sad that manufacturers are moving away from them : (
It actually makes it special car and lower the cost
just love how it sounds
Beat reviewer in the business
what was the song plan'n in the background
never thought i'd say this but...this car looks so sexy in red!
LOVE these reviews!

this guy should be on top gear usa
This dude is awesome.
you make the best car reviews men keep it on ! ny the way please take the 2012 gtr to a spin
@jowillkit it's the same thing. it's a ratio doesnt matter.
You can get the same DCT transmission from the M3 in the 335is...

get rid of your run flats
What's the music @ 5:28 ??? Anyone know???
Was that an iPhone 3G?
a surprisingly good review... thank you
Germany and cars: Can´t go wrong.

great review
I don't think aluminum hoods are an M3 thing...?
That's brand new price. If you look at 2nd hand price, 335 depreciates twice more than the M3. same year, half the price of the M3, that tells you something right.
Wtf the 335is has the same 7 spd dct you said it doesn’t ☠️
kipkay is it you?
This is how a car review should look like and not like all other dubstep, montage bullshit "reviews" out there
"it's california, we have no money to fix anything" LOL best statement ever.
Love the Intro!
I have an 335is and it does 0-60 around 4.7 sec. and I hear the M3 can do 3.9 or 3.8.
+Brent Arnold my m3 is fast but it definitely doesn't pull a 3.9 0-60. more like 4.3
Bmw always underrate their M cars
Красивая машина )
need that beat at 3:37
By choosing the 335is, you are missing out on the true magic that is BMW. The M division cars feel like you are driving a car from a totally different company. Or rather, the regular cars don't feel like *true* BMWs.
Not to mention that an M car has significantly different long term investment value.
I reckon that the best engine sound on any car is the Ferrari 458 Italia
I don't get the Cinderella's sisters reference.
One of my fav cars ^_^
This car is not 4.7 seconds to 60. its more like 4.2 or 4.3. Some people said 3.9..
@Josh1223334444 i doubt it its the epa, thats driving normally
I miss this daddy
@cagriffin101 because the auto manual is faster than the manual.
0-60 4.7???
0-60mph 4.7. 0-100kmh 4.7
@Josh1223334444 smaller displacement supposed to mean better fuel economy ...
i hate all the fancy gadgets, this is how id configure it

i love most of bmw especially with a m batch i just hope they don´t become "green"
335is has the same dct transmission as the m3
that m3 has no torque and that means you don't feel the surge when accelerating and tuned 335diesel can blow it away, so for me it's a no car just for that hollow feeling when stomping the gas pedal
Stock 335D’s Gap M3’s too lol
@khunopie
Who has two thumbs and likes to say 'this guy'???
THIS GUY!!!
this and roadfly do the best reviews. car and driver and consumer reports youtube channels are biased and incorrect
this guy calls every auto box dct, isnt the gearbox in a m3 smg a single clutch gearbox not a double clutch???
Good car.
1M is better.
Who spent $3k on an automatic but decided to forego iDrive? That combo Cooley has is such a lose-lose in 2018.
love all you haters, merry christmas
He sounds like Mike from Dirty Jobs.
@gamer7790 That's subjective.
"I'm a purist"
First thing he says next is to rip out the 6 speed manual, and delete a pedal, and then PAY for that
Lmao ikr wtf
Dct is better, no man can shift as quick as the dct. But the 6 speed is probably more fun to drive
Why does this guy keep referring to cars as "This Guy"? Does he call his wife "this guy"?
Yea, you could buy the 335is but I bet you that $9,000 you'd want that M3 badge after a while...
more electronics = more things to fail
DKG not DCT
No, it's DCT.
REDA dkg translated to English is dct
14 city and 20 highway !?
but it has 7 speeds !!!?
thats ridiculous
Nice!
youre wrong... a propper bmw m3 should have a 6 speed manual, not a dct!!!!!!!!
@BiggSteve777 2 thumbs up for that!
0-60 in 4.7 seconds? Who the hell was driving? Should do it in more like 4.2 to 4.4 according to every other car publication.
They aren't that fast to 60. The new M3 does it in 4.1
Yeah your right they probably don't know how to lunch it correctly
Did he really call this thing manual, I guess because he used his hand, but if no clutch pedal or 3 pedals I should say its not fun or shouldn't be call manual.
I agree
+just82much
I think its the way of saying you make the car go when you push that clutch..
+Alexie30 If you're manually choosing which gear you're in at any given moment, then it's a manual. What difference does it make if you don't need to engage the clutch yourself? +Alexie30 there is no clutch!!
Superrr
THE 335Is HAS A DCT
Looked at what a used one would cost... still around $40k. You can buy a nice brand new 2016 luxury car for that much.
Thats because this is a car that's appreciating. The last NA M3 with the only ever v8 in it. Lots of rare things to find now these days so dont be surprised if they go even higher
