    Even after watching this video, I was confused as hell getting my stabilizer to work. I got the point where I was getting ready to throw it against the wall, but I kept replaying the video over and over, pausing frequently and taking the steps verrry slowly. I also started with a mid weight camera, and no matter what I did the drop time was always way too fast. It wasn't until I followed your instructions EXACTLY and took off weight until only the smallest was left that it worked. Not the most straightforward process, but if we follow your instruction to the letter, we'll get there. Thank you!!

      Hey Robert. I'm really sorry for your frustrations, but I'm so glad you stuck with my videos and followed my instructions. I know the videos are long and there's a lot of information to take in, but you saw that by following my tutorials step by step it is possible to get a perfect balance. I hope you're enjoying your stabilizer now. Thank you for your comment, and thanks for watching!

    Just wanted to express some gratitude for you putting these Roxant series tutorials. Finally a professional and practical way of getting the most out of this tech. Wouldn’t mind seeing more filming techniques with the Roxant. How to pan/walk while shooting kind of stuff. Keep putting out the great content!!!

    • @cowboycrab6500
      @cowboycrab6500 6 років тому

      Sort of. I figured out how to balance it with a special effects Holga lens I have because the lens I was traveling with was too heavy when combined with my camera. But! I now know how to do it with my smaller lens when I go back home.

    • @OtisOriginals
      @OtisOriginals  6 років тому

      I'm glad you know how to balance it now. And honestly it just gets easier the more you do it, even if you use a different camera or lens. Once you understand the physics of it the whole process will become 2nd nature. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

    I was about to return the item until I watched your video. Your video should come standard with Roxant. I use Sony A6000 and Sony Action Cam with it and after watching your video, I spent about an hour to balance both cameras. Then I put lines and labels to where each cameras should be placed. Now I can balance each of them in less than 1 minute. Balancing is the key to smooth recording of video. For $60 I have no complaints. Thanks so much!

      Hi Daniel. Thank you for your great comment. I have done the same thing with several different cameras that I use, marking on the stabilizer where each one should be placed...along with notes about which weights to use. I'm glad that you found my videos and that you're enjoying using your Roxant stabilizer. Thank you for your comment, and thanks for watching.

    Thanks Otis! This video is so helpful! I did not receive my unit yet but I'm ready to balance it like a pro! You really go in depth with a methodical approach that make it easy to understand.
    Watching your video made me realize something really important. When watching reviews of this stabilizer, I often noticed a wobbly swinging motion. You made me realize this was not a problem of the Roxant stabilizer but because of an improperly balanced rig with too much weight. It was the only thing I did not like about this stabilizer but now I am reassured! I know it'S not 1500$ Ronin but I feel confident this can do a wonderful job! Can't wait to try it first hand!
    I also looked at your modifications and two-handed operation videos and they will absolutely be useful to me! I was wondering how I could manipulate the rig to pan and tilt to keep the shot framed as I wanted... you answered perfectly!
    Thanks to you, I will be able to make the most out of this stabilizer. You do a wonderful job at explaining while keeping everything to the point with just the right flow to make the viewer learn and assimilate the information! With a touch of your own personality!
    Seriously, fantastic presentation! Thanks a lot!

    I really want this stabilizer to work. My target camera is a canon powershot SX150 IS. I've watched your video too many times and have spent a lot of time making microadjustments, trying different weights, I can get it "balance" both left to right and up and down, but I can't eliminate the pendulum swing and forget about the drop time. I get it balanced, then try to adjust for pendulum swing and the non-sense starts all over again. The only way to "stabilize" in my opinion is to tighten the gimbal ball screw and then just utilize the whole thing with steady hands and easy slow movements on my feet. Otherwise getting it the way you show in your various videos is seemingly impossible. Reading the comments here it seems quite a few folks experience the same issues.. I don't know what else to do. There have been days I've spent the entire day trying to get it to work right with no good effect. I'm frustrated. I put it down for awhile and each time I come back it's the same non-sense. In the end I just tighten the gimbal screw and hold it with two hands if necessary..

      @OtisOriginals  6 років тому

      Hi John. I'm glad my videos are helping you with your stabilizer. It takes a little while to get a "perfect" balance when you're first learning to use a stabilizer, but once you get used to it you'll be surprised at how quickly you can get a perfect balance. Keep practicing, and also practice walking with the stabilizer. Bend your knees and squat down slightly...just a few inches shorter than when you're standing up straight. That will also make a big difference in the smoothness of your shots.

    Probably a good idea when Roxant began the idea, but who in their right mind is going to go through all that trouble to shoot with something that MIGHTwork. And if you do manage to get it balanced, there are too many shortcomings with this design that come up during use: 1) You have no way of controlling the direction your camera goes. With a ball n socket, it's a free for all. 2) Again, this ball n socket design blows chunks since it has very limited movement. If you happen to tilt your hand too much, the ball stem hits the walls of the socket, making way for a sudden jerk movement. 3) Unable to film anything on a table or floor because of the weights dragging across the surfaces.
    I can go on. I've stabilized it to almost perfection but it continues to sway to directions I dont want or the camera remains tilted and have to adjust (and yes the ball n socket was sprayed on with wd40). This is a failed design through and through.

    I am considering buying this stabilizer but wasn’t sure if it will be any good. Thank you very much for this very detailed video. I now know that other reviewers don’t have theirs quite properly balanced and that could be why their reviews or test footage could be wobbly.

    • @OtisOriginals
      @OtisOriginals  6 років тому

      Thanks for your comment. Yes, any of those video reviews or test footage videos with swinging or wobbling footage is because their stabilizers are not balanced correctly...usually having too much bottom counter weight. I will be uploading some videos soon showing footage with the stabilizer properly balanced, so keep an eye out for that. And thanks for watching.

  • @kookoocardboard

    It took me about 2 hours to get it just about right. Just the slightest movement of any adjustment is critical. I was being very careful the handle had to be straight. However after all that time and my arm killing me I decided to do a test with and without the stabilizer with my Canon 80D. I was surprised these was just a slight improvement. Maybe if you are running or something it would help more but if you are used to shooting video and got a steady hand I don’t really think it is that much better with built in Canon stabilization.

    • @OtisOriginals
      @OtisOriginals  6 років тому

      Hi Kevin. Yeah, the 80D is a heavy camera (almost 3 pounds with the kit 18-55mm lens) and is slightly above Roxant's recommended 2.1 pound weight limit. I do have another video that shows how to modify your Roxant Pro to handle cameras up to around 3 pounds ua-cam.com/video/9N3tMrQxXOE/v-deo.html Canon has really improved their image stabilization recently so you might be able to get away with hand holding the camera if you are walking slowly and smoothly. However if you are moving fast or running I would still recommend using the Roxant Pro to smooth out your footage. Thank you for taking the time to comment, and thanks for watching.

    Hi Otis, thank you for very good instructions to balance Roxant Pro Stabilizer. Now I have one with small handycam (Canon HFM31). I think I balanced it well. I have two questions: 1. Should I turn off the optical stabilizer function in camera? 2. Can you share your test video with Roxant in action in your hands? Thank you.

    • @OtisOriginals
      @OtisOriginals  5 років тому

      Hi jardatop. Yes, you should turn off the optical stabilizer function in your camera. If you leave it on it will get confused with the normal stabilization of the Roxant Stabilizer and will try to fight with it...making the footage look unnatural. I am trying to get together some footage but my current network TV series keeps me working 65+ hours per week...but I have a hiatus coming up in April and am hoping to get a video together by then. Thanks for watching!

    Great stuff again. Thanks for showing the difference in the weight balance when the camera is switched on - crikey! I'll be mostly using mine with a very short / wide-angle (11mm) lens, so hopefully any changes in zoom won't have such a drastic effect.

    • @OtisOriginals
      @OtisOriginals  6 років тому

      Thanks for all your comments. Yes, it's amazing how even the smallest shift in weight distribution will change the balance of your stabilizer. You should be ok with your short zoom, and will probably only have to make small adjustments when you change your lens size. Hope you get some great footage, and thanks for watching.

    i bought this stabilizer after searching for a gimbal for a Nikon D7000. I've watched the videos and have spent the last 3 hours trying to figure out a configuration that works! I did everything recommended.... grrrr.... about to send it back.

    • @OtisOriginals
      @OtisOriginals  6 років тому +1

      SV ADOS Your camera body just by itself with a battery and memory card weighs 1 pound 11.5 ounces....so around 1.75 pounds. Depending on what lens you're using that's going to add another 1-2 pounds, making your camera and lens weigh anywhere from 2.8 - 3.3 pounds or more. And if you look at the title of the Roxant Pro Stabilizer when you ordered it you will see that it says "For cameras weighing up to 2.1 pounds"...so you're already over that weight limit. Did you weigh your camera before you ordered the stabilizer? You can still make it work, you just have to add more weight to the bottom of the stabilizer (along with the 3 included weights).

    Wow, I’ve seen a few videos about this stabilizer and let me tell you, you are the only one who did it the right way. I saw this guy and his camera was all over the place and got me scared because I just ordered mine on amazon. Just one little thing, I don’t why at some point of the video your voice starts to go slower than your mouth, I had to watch the whole thing without looking at your face because it was confusing. Anyhow, great video, you look like a narrator from National Geographic.

      Geraldine Campo Thanks so much for the nice comment. I made this video to help end all the confusion from some of those other tutorial videos I've seen...probably the same ones you've seen. Let me know when you receive your Roxant Stabilizer and if you have any questions or problems balancing it. If you click on my channel I have several other videos with helpful tips and tricks for the Roxant Stabilizer. I don't know why there was an audio sync issue when you watched this...might have been a UA-cam sync issue..I'll look into it. Besides, a lot of people don't like to look at my face when I'm talking to them...haha.

    I thought this video would be like the others who would talk a lot but had no essence, I thought wrong every word you said had meaning especially the see saw and the fulcrum point,it just open my mind on how to balance the stabilizer easily so im going back to the store and buy me one and this time remove the neck strap. I learned a lot. p.s. dont mind music machines comment its his opinion but its not accurate, every word you said was worth it. Thanks for teaching.

      I have to be honest I did it in an hour because I experimented with the neck strap on and some additional washers, strap really throws of the balance and it worked better with no additional washer only one weight got the balance right. Surprisingly smooth video just like a gimbal. My camera btw is an lx100.

    • @OtisOriginals
      @OtisOriginals  6 років тому +1

      Hey Ted, thanks for keeping me posted. I'm glad you took the time to experiment with different setups...that really helps you learn the balancing process. And yes, you should NEVER leave the camera's neck strap attached...it will constantly swing and throw off your balance...ruining your shots. Enjoy your new Roxant Pro and Happy Shooting!!

  • @ramentacos324

    Does the knob on the handle matter? Because when it’s tight it won’t move but if it’s too loose it’ll fall right down even if there’s no weight.

    • @OtisOriginals
      @OtisOriginals  6 років тому

      Thanks for your question, but I'm not sure I understand what you mean when you say "It'll fall right down even if there's no weight". I assume you're talking about the small screw used to tighten the ball joint in the gimbal? (The metal ball at the top of the hand grip, where the stabilizer tilts and pans). That screw should always be loose when you are shooting/operating the stabilizer. The only time it should be tightened is when you are unscrewing or screwing in the handle to the different holes in the bottom of the top stage of the stabilizer. What exactly is falling down? Unless you're talking about the knob that connects the bottom half of the stabilizer (the bottom arm with the counter weights) to the top half of the stabilizer (the top part where you attach your camera). If you can be more specific I would really like to help you with this question. Thanks.

    • @ramentacos324
      @ramentacos324 6 років тому +1

      Otis Originals I was talking about the screw for tightening the ball joint, but when it’s loose and I do the drop test, it always falls too fast, so I was wondering if there was something else I could adjust.

    • @OtisOriginals
      @OtisOriginals  6 років тому

      Oh, ok...I understand what you mean now. What kind of camera are you using? It sounds like the camera might be too light for the rig. If that is the case, you can add some weight to the top of the stabilizer (which is like making the camera heavier). Try using a small bolt and nut to attach some heavy washers somewhere at the top of the stabilizer. Or you can tape the washers or even some coins to the top. You might even be able to use the smallest counter weight up there...from the weights that you would normally put at the bottom. Does that make sense? Another question...did you get the Red color version? If so, you can register your stabilizer at www.roxant.com/register and they will send you an email that will allow you to get a smaller handle for free. With the smaller handle you can get the bottom weights and arm up closer to the camera, which will also help balance a small camera. Please let me know if any of these suggestions work for you.

    Hi thanks for the videos it helps me getting closer to get my camera stabilized. One thing I don't get. My camera is perfect level front to back and from side. I have a drop time of two seconds but when doing the drop time test the camera is not falling in his straight position. It bends to the left. Any ideas?

    • @OtisOriginals
      @OtisOriginals  6 років тому +1

      Hi Nigel. It sounds like you may not have an exact perfect balance front to back...that's what will generally cause that "falling off" to one side when you do the drop time test. Try this...once you have your camera in what you feel is a perfect balance, hold the stabilizer out in front of you and give it a little shake left to right and front to back. I'm willing to bet that you'll find the camera will tilt just a little bit instead of going back to level. It's just one of those fine nuances when using a manual stabilizer. Please let me know if that helps, and thanks for watching.

    Simple and fast tutorial. Today came ROXAN: D | (for me it looks like Joanne) and I could not set her up for anything. After watching it works flawlessly. I have a camera Nikon d3200 kit lens. Could you write a tutorial on moving around and holding it yourself. The ball connection is poor and I'm thinking about buying a different handle. with a long deflection, you have to work a lot with the wrist, for example, a far-out hand and a lenght body.
    Thank you :D

      I'm glad you were able to get your Nikon balanced after watching my videos. Yes, I know they are long videos but it was the only way I could explain everything that is necessary to learn how to balance. Please make sure that you added 1 or 2 drops of regular 3-In-1 oil to the ball connection when you received your Roxant Pro...it comes from the factory unlubricated, so without the oil it won't feel smooth. I am trying to work on a video to show how to operate and move with the Roxant Stabilizer, but I just haven't had enough free time lately. Hopefully soon. Thanks for watching!

    Do you have to find a balance EVERY TIME you want to film or only once if you always use the same camera and lens?

    • @OtisOriginals
      @OtisOriginals  6 років тому

      Once you find the balance you should not have to change the setup if you are always using the same camera and lens. And you can use a grease pencil or marker to make marks of where the camera should be or how long or short to make the arm, in case you have to collapse the stabilizer for transport or storage. Then when you put it back together just line everything up and you should be good to go. Thank you for your question, and thanks for watching.

    I've had such a hard time balancing my Canon VIXIAHF R800!!!! First I tried the SUTEFOTO S40 and it was impossible. Then I've got the Roxant Pro and I still can't get it. My camera is long and light (255 g). I don't think it can be used with these steady cam. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

    • @OtisOriginals
      @OtisOriginals  5 років тому

      Hi Larry. Sorry you're having problems balancing. I'm not sure why you're not able to balance your Vixia, as it weighs about 0.5 pounds (240g)...and if you've watched my video you see that I balance a camera that weighs about 0.3 pounds. Try using the smallest counter weight first, and if that is too light then remove it and try the the medium size weight. Make sure you open your camera's viewfinder screen before you start balancing. Try mounting the camera in the middle of the top platform (middle forward and backward), and then move your handle into the different screw holes backward and forward until you find a neutral balance point. And please watch this video again, as it really does contain all the important information you need in order to balance your Roxant Pro. Thanks for your question and thank you for watching.

      @@OtisOriginals Thank you for your response. You do a great job in your video and I will most definitely watch it again. The latest thing I did was to put four rolls of coins packed together on top of the camera to give it more stability. This started to fall in place more or less but I'm not there yet. My VIXIAHF R800 is rectangular rather than square and it's difficult to keep the balance front and back. I will continue experimenting and let you know. Thanks. Larry

    • @OtisOriginals
      @OtisOriginals  6 років тому

      Hey Dkm. Thanks so much!! But yeah, 157 grams is a little on the light side for this stabilizer...but you can still make it work. Try balancing it WITHOUT any of the counter weights on the bottom...try using just the weight of the bottom arm by itself, sliding it up or down until you get a good balance and a 2 second drop time. If just the bottom arm without any of the counter weights is too light, try using a few washers instead of the counter weights. I've had to do that for a couple of small cameras that I use and it has worked for me. Let me know how it goes.

    Please go back in time and teach me maths.
    Seriously, great video, only thing it could use is some low key background music. Researching affordable compact stabilizers to travel with on the road and your tutorial has restored my faith in this contraption. Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like most time, and frustration, is spent on configuring this for the first time? You reckong that any follow up adjustments can be done in less than 5 minutes? Keep up the great work, cheers!

    • @OtisOriginals
      @OtisOriginals  6 років тому

      Oh trust me, you wouldn't have wanted me to be your teacher....I was horrible at math...haha. But I'm glad my videos are teaching you how to balance and use your stabilizer. Yes, you are correct...once you get the stabilizer balanced for the first time it just gets easier and faster, even if you switch to a different camera. Once you understand the basic physics of how it works you should be able to balance pretty much any camera in less than 5 minutes. Oh, and the reason I don't use background music in my videos is because everyone has different tastes in music...one person may enjoy my choices, and 100 other people may hate them. So it's easier to just not use music.
      Please let me know how you're doing with your balancing, and thanks for watching.

    What am I doing wrong? Everything is balanced but when I turn my camera starts turning in a circle. It’s stays totally up right and doesn’t sway. The whole thing just twists. I’m lost. How can I keep that from happening?

    • @soupgaming5923
      @soupgaming5923 5 років тому

      you have to use 2 hands. one to hold the gimbal, and one to gently apply twist at the base where the ball and socket connects to the base. also watch some videos on how to use a steadycam, they help

    • @OtisOriginals
      @OtisOriginals  5 років тому

      Hi Lauren. Yeah, unfortunately physics takes over at certain points...hence the twisting of your rig. I have another video you might like to watch that shows a 2 handed operating technique that will prevent that twisting from happening. But you will need to practice a little bit and use a very light touch...it just takes a little time to learn and perfect.
