    I love how you can store so much in one jar, and you cant put foods in it that you cant do with canning. Watching 2020 covid. Great to have on shelves! Ty for your excellent videos!!

    This series is so informative. I just purchased my dehydrator and you've given me plenty of ideas of what I want to use it for. My question is how do you rehydrate the foods?

    You can also vacuum seal ball jars with your vacuum sealer and the appropriate attachment (for wide or regular mouth jars). That would save you using the oxygen absorbers. GREAT video series. You have convinced me to upgrade my dehydrator to an across-the-food blower type. THANKS for taking the time to do these. Much appreciated.

    Preserving food in the jars is great, thanks for all the tips. As for the bags, that's an insane amount of waste. Anything but environmentally friendly.

    • @KarinOll
      @KarinOll 9 років тому +5

      +Konrad Dobson That might be true that plastic is not so environmentally friendly, on the other hand storing things in plastic and cans for emergency times is recommendable. If there is a war or other catastrophies, vibrations from deternations, bombs etc can cause glas to brake.

      I put them in mason jars and use the mason jar sealer attachment on my food saver to vacuum pack. Advantage of jars is rodents won't chew through glass like they will plastic tub sand mylar/plastic bags.

      If you are concerned about the the jars shaking, use old socks to protect them. But with a beautiful shelf like that I would take the chance just so I could look at them.

    3:44 This is a great series, and this is a SURE way to AFFORDABLY store up food for what's coming, rather than 75-90$ a case for MREs. 12-24 meals a case. We are so concerned about the coming crisis, we're getting a second dehydrator to double up on the time it takes to dehydrate and get everything stored. And this series is my "how-to" manual! 5*****

For those of us who don't have a lot of extra money to throw around, could you explain exactly how much it generally costs to buy the various slicing machines, vacuum sealers, mylar bags, O2 absorbers, jars, and even the dehydrator? Can you make a video about how to do effective dehydrating and storing with just the most basic equipment, or the bare minimum stuff you need for effective dry food storage?

    I've used the vacuum seal bags, and they do fail. So to seal them in the mylar bags that will keep things fresh. Also the oxygen pks work great, just remember to keep the ones you don't use in a small jar with a tight lid or they will be no good in just a short while.

    • @Dehydrate2store
      @Dehydrate2store  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Mercedes, thank you for the question! It should say on the can in what substance the fruits are stored. If the fruits are stored in water or fruit juice, you do not need to rinse them. If the fruits are stored in oil or syrup, you will want to rinse them as the excess oil will hinder the drying process. Have fun!

    Maybe in 2009 mylar bags were of good quality. In 2015 I bought some from 2 different sources, and when I went into a closet, closed the door and shined a flashlight inside them, I saw they had many small holes that you can't see unless you use this method. It explained why none of them worked very long for me. I also had a problem with oxygen pouches. They did not get hard like they're supposed to (which indicated they've absorbed the oxygen. ) Both were a waste of money.

    Fabulous series. Those excaliber's are nice. I have an american harvester dehydrator and tried to dehydrate some plum tomatoes not long ago. I sliced them in half and dryed them for over 24 hours but they were still pretty flexible. I didn't trust they were dry enough so I wound up putting them in ziplock bags in my freezer. Is there a trick I don't know about? Or is it my kind of dehydrator?

      Took 2 years for you to find out, but I think it's about time! :p
      It's to prevent spoilage in case of a hole. it can be very annoying to lose food when you put that much work to preserve it. At the price of a oxygen pack, there really is no reason to abstain on the cost to protect 5-20 pounds of apples or what not.

    My dehydrated summer squash was not blanched first, but looked good and I vacuum packed it in mason jars. After 4 days, I double checked it and it had turned brown but the vacuum was still good. I had it stored on the back of a shelf in the laundry room where the fluorescent light was on part of the time. Was that enough to turn it brown? I'm storing it in the future in a plastic bin under the bed where it is cool and dark. I will also blanch it first as you recommend. Is the brown squash safe to eat in soup?

    Wonderful videos. Do you think your dehydrated food that’s in those marvelous shelves (wish I had them, too) in glass jars will last 30 years? I’m asking because I wonder if you know if the light they’re exposed to will make a difference. The jars look so beautiful and orderly on the wall.
