    After reading your idea about the plastic cutting board, it gave me an idea. I found a great item at Hobby Lobby, it is a plastic mesh for needle point. I cut it to fit. It is a thick mesh. I was worried about it melting in the dehydrator since it's not made for cooking, but I gave it a try. I have now used it continuously in a temperature of 125 to 130, with no issues at all. They work wonderfully for all of my small goodies. Like hashbrown potatoes, anything cut small. Thank You so much!

    Hey BexarPrepper,
    Since watching your video I have started buying 1 bag of frozen vegetables to put in my cold bag when I go grocery shopping.It helps keep the items in the bag cold until I get home. I then dehydrate the frozen vegetables. It has really added to our food storage. I still prefer to home can our food. But dehydrating has allowed me to store a lot more and not take up as much space. Blessings to you! : )

One more question, what things would you NOT dehydrate ? I know, too many questions...but it was a lot of info ! ;-)

    hello. thanks so much, this did give me a lot of ideas. i do cave a couple of questions. once you open a Mylar bag, how long do you expect that food to last. if i wanted to hydrate food for short term storage (6-12 months) what are some good inexpensive way of keeping the food? do you recommend food savors, just Ziploc with or without oxygen absorbers. etc. jars are always an option but looking for something that doesn't break and are cheap and also can save small quantities vs. a large bag. ty

    I thought at one time, that I wanted to dehydrate my own, but in a SHTF situation when water will be a "premium commodity" I chose canning then I have the liquid in some of my prepping foods. Just my thoughts. Especially canning meats, chicken ends up in its own liquid, so an advantage t making soups and stews that use the liquid in the jar. Then there is the weight of the canned jars, but......

    So could I dehydrate veg and fruit and put them in a mason jar to use over the year? Do I have to seal the jar or will they stay usable like spices do? Do I need to use oxygen packages and if so where would I find tiny ones for jars?
    I do not have the budget right now to by mylar etc. but I am collecting free canning jars from all over. I really appreciate your channel as it makes me feel that I can do this even if I can't afford alot of expensive stuff. Thanks.

  • @brabanthallen
    @brabanthallen 10 років тому +3

    A couple things I notice right off. Your mylar storage bags are not vacuum sealed. Vacuum sealing them with oxygen absorbers inside will dramatically increase the shelf life. Another thing, and perhaps the most important, don't put all your eggs in one basket. It's way better to have multiple storage caches (some hidden) for when the SHTF. When hungry people come looking to take your stash (and they will), if you have everything stored in the same place, it will be gone, and all your work will be enjoyed by some other, selfish asshole(s). Create several hidden caches that only you and your family know about. You'll be better off.

      I too am curious about your storage of foods. Is this in an outside storage building? I thought I saw daylight through some of the flooring which would allow vermin in for one. And I'm guessing your in a temperate climate? As everything I've read about food storage is not subject it to various temperatures. I.e. In a garage, attic or out building as hot summer vs. cold winter will make foods spoil very quickly. Being I'm in Houston this would be a very bad thing to do. I dehydrate as it saves so much space which is premium trying to store it all indoors. Spaces without temperature control are better suited for soaps, paper products, canning gardening supplies, fuels, etc. You may live in one of the few areas that doesn't experience temperature swings? I did notice your candles were new looking. Mine would look like melted crap. I'm not doubting you but curious I suppose how your able to do this. Do you have temperature control in this space?

    I have an opinion, and I mean no disrespect when I say this, because I love your videos. in a lot of peppers videos i see people prepping hundreds and even thousands of pounds of food and stuff. but what i think is most important, is information. know how to grow and harvest foods and store seeds. if u know how to make compost and plant things you won't need to store seasonings and herbs and hundreds of pounds of veggies. people don't necessarily have to consume meat, vegetarians eat mostly veggies. another great source of protein is bugs. if your desperate for meat having a good source of protein makes all the difference. dehydrate and store a big load of bugs as they will be light weight and high in protein, so if you need to get up and run for whatever reason, you can grab a few weeks worth of supplies, your seeds, and light weight proteins, (btw you can eat them raw with salt and you won't know the difference between them or chips. just saying.)
    so my opinion is: why not make a few months worth of food, so when you grow your food you can use that to eat dehydrate store for winter and save the seeds for next season, and then use the dead plants for compost, make new soil and done! your set for life.
    this is what I'm focussing on as a pepper myself. gaining loads of information and survival skills for many different situations I'm forced in. relocation is my top worry. if something happens in my neighborhood and i have to leave, i will have to leave behind years of hard prepping work. or i could just grab my seeds, a few months worth of prepped food, and a bug out bag with other essential light weight stuff, and I'm set to rebuild my life and my family's life wherever we feel safe.
    what is your opinion on my prepping priorities? do they sound good?

    • @MsStanleycat
      @MsStanleycat 9 років тому +3

      Have at least a year worth of food because it can take 3 months for a garden and if the emergency hit in Sept you have to add winter into your calculations. Also if the atmosphere was full of volcanic dust food could be difficult to grow for some time.

    • @tsukanitakuda7261

      oh ok ill see if i can carry a years worth of food, or have a separate tote pack that my husband and i can take turns carrying with al of that food in it. cuz like i said if SHTF and we are forced to move we will need to be able to carry it. thank you for responding.

    • @MsStanleycat
      @MsStanleycat 9 років тому +4

      Tsukani Takuda Okay I now realize you have NO IDEA what is coming upon the earth. You may not be able to grow anything for several years after the pass over. Store the food now or you will starve. I choose to dehydrate because this method is light and portable. I can't do anything else for you God Bless. The Egyptians stored grain for seven years and they made it through the pass over which occurred during the Exodus.

      I live on an island. I'm not preparing for an apocalypse, I'm prepping for a hurricane, tsunami, massive flood, island wipe out. we even have a boat packed with salt water purifiers, soil, buckets, tarp poles and a tent so if it becomes over flooded, we can either escape to another close by island or wait out until we come across another ship who will be able to take us to safety, but we have the soil and seeds and stored dehydrated food so we can wait out for a month or so, and not all plants take months to grow, I've grown tomatoes within 1 month, and several other veggies, we also have a packed bag of dehydrated insects on the boat their is about 2 months worth of a supply of proteins, plus the 1 month prepped food i will bring with us if we have to escape. our boat is also up the mountain not next to the water, if it floods we will lose our boat, but if its up the mountain we can hike up and get it.
      and if the end of the world comes, id rather be one of the first to die than see all the suffering people slowly dying and suffer myself.
      my point is people prep for all sorts of different things in their world, just because you believe your prepping for the right one, doesn't mean anything else won't happen. say you live in a city prone to earthquakes, if a massive one hits your house and all or most of your supplies are lost. and then the end of the world comes. you won't be prepared if something major happens before the thing you prepped for happens. you have to prep for many different reasons and be prepared and in control of the situation if they do happen. again no disrespect, just stating my opinions.

    • @tsukanitakuda7261
      @tsukanitakuda7261 9 років тому +3

      ML S thank you for you opinion, i wasn't planning on bringing the compost, just the seeds and a bag of miracle grow that would be in my bug out bag, I've hiked a whole week with a light weight tent, a solar shower, and a few other essentials and ate plenty of snakes and fish, i noticed i lost some weight but also gained muscle witch helped me be able to clime some trees to get coconuts. i lived a whole week out of my bug out bag. I'm trying to live a little longer but i keep finding dead ends. I've cut a few items I've added a few others. so instead of a spear gun i found a hand spear works just fine for river fishing. Oh and i live on the caribbean island so everything here is readily available, with almond trees coconut trees fruit trees, everywhere. i have it easy its just the protein I'm interested in however. i find plenty of snakes and land crabs even iguanas. but catching them is another story. and yes i see what you mean if something uncontrollable happens external I'm screwed no matter how much i prepped for. like a nuke that somehow lost its direction and landed on the island I'm gone. but a tsunami or hurricane will definitely be more survivable with some ready to grab food like you said.

    Great video, well done. I'm on a "bean" kick this week. Dollar tree has pintos for 3 cents per oz. One thing I have to say about beans is that when you think you have enough stored, store twice as much. I store for 10 people for 1 year, 1 person for 10 years, or 2 people for 5 years. For beans, I'm aiming for 450 lbs. pintos, then 1,000 lbs. other beans. You definitely need enough for soups and meals for a long, long, time.

    When you dehydrate canned fruits, what do you do with the excess syrup/juice? I've thought about freezing them in small portions to add to iced teas or to add to the water if I choose to rehydrate the fruit. Freezing isn't great long-term, I know, but other than letting the kids guzzle the syrup, I don't know what else to do. I know pineapple juice works for a sourdough starter,,,

    Thank you for sharing. Are the mushrooms on top in the jar, home grown?

    I have a question. I am new to canning and dehydrating, and running out of room in my home. I was told to store them in a cool dark area. It looks like you have yours in a separate building. I live in the south where it gets very hot in the summer. Is it safe to store home canned goods in a outside building even in the hot summer time. I wish I had a basement, but I don't. I'm very impressed with what you have done. Thanks for sharing.

    I'm a beginner and I stand in awe of you. I know you've been at it a while and one day I can only hope to do a fraction of what you have done. Thanks for your hard work it inspires me.

    I love your videos they are so informative. How do you use the dehydrated lettuce?

    • @BexarPrepper
      @BexarPrepper  7 років тому +1

      T. Lovejoy although there is not much flavor in lettuce it can be used as a meal extender. so let's say you are making dehydrated spinach you can go 50% lettuce and 50% spinach and the lettuce will taste like spinach and you'll be able to serve twice the serving size. Blessings

    What is the approximate shelf life of the dehydrated foods in the mylar bags? What about the dog food? Is that just bags of dog food put in those buckets? Did you add O2 absorbers in the buckets? I'm new to all of this and just starting.

    is all the dehydrated stuff sealed in foodsaver bags then in the mylar?
    would my stuff be ok with out the mylar bags and just stored in the vacume bags?

    I love your videos. I am reseaching canning and have done a few things in the past. I have a couple of questions though. Can you can pudding and a cake that has been baked(maybe even in the jar) also how do you prepare the tater tots once they have been dehydrated? Thank you for all of your videos. I also am in awe of your storage and am working really hard at building my food storage.

    I am curious. Why would you put ivory soap in mylar? I always unwrap soap and store open in a bucket or on the shelf because the soap lasts a long time once some moisture leaves it.

    Thanks!! What is the shelve life of the butter? Is it boiled then put into the canning jars or was this done by using traditional canning methods. I'm new to canning and started with peach preserves. Started simple with great results so I want to move onto bigger challenges. God bless.

    I noticed you did down vegetable stir fry. Can I take frozen stir fry and dehydrate when the vegetables are all different? Or do I have to do the vegetables separately?

    I also learned BJ's Wholesale sells Birdseye frozen veggies in the restaurant size bags and all the prep work has been done. Cleaning, sorting, chopping I am going to look into this as a way to build up my storage quicker than going the farmers market route. After sorting and chopping away the unusable portions of the vegetable the yield may be similar also. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!

    I have a question for you if you wouldn't mind answering...
    I'm quite an experienced cook, but I'm new to pressure canning. I'm interested in canning for emergencies but I'm also interested for convenience.
    As far as low acid foods go, it is a real turn off for me to think that they have to be boiled for 20 minutes before consuming according to safety rules. Do you do this? Seems to me chicken would be like sawdust,..especially after processing. I would like to eat a thigh room temp!

    @BexarPrepper I looked in Walmarts for Zote but couldn't find it..they carry the Naptha that I get a rash from. I used the ivory because some YTuber switched to that after her family got rashes off of the Fels naptha, but it just clogs my drains so won't be using that anymore. I will keep looking for Zote..is that the pink soap? Any other suggestions appreciated. Do you make your own laundry det.? It is cheap but gotta get past these rashes & clogged drains.

    @JasionJones without power you could convert your car into a dehydrator or just use screens to dehydrate one to set the food on and one to cover to keep the bugs off. To cook without boiling water just increase your soak time until rehydrated and cook over open fire. I hope that answers your question. Blessings!
