Hey man, thanks for doing this. My great grandfather had these all over his house, and many of them were attached to massive wooden chains hung all around. I'm sure this is not news to you, or to others on here, but I was always truly amazed by him, and by these things. I miss him greatly, and will be making these in honor of him. Also, in this crazy world, I would most definitely agree - the first step is DEFINITELY to "Block everything out"... Despite all my rage, I am still just a ball in a cage...
Thanks for your comment! Would be fun to see your great grandfather’s work. Once you get into it it’s very relaxing and becomes easier to block out everything else. Nice Smashing Pumpkins reference too. 😀
I've been working on doing the chains, I think it's harder to do than the ball in a cage. But both are good conversation starters. People can't believe you cut it all out of one block.
This project is awesome I'm going to try to make this for my brother-in-law . Who bought me whitling and carving tools for Christmas. I want to make him this for his birthday. I know that it would blow his mind. Then maybe for my birthday he will buy me more cool tools. Thank you for making this video. I think everybody who posts on UA-cam is extremely brave to put themselves out there for criticism or positivity. One day maybe I will be this brave Cheers
awesome vid ...but just a psa .. if you make the thing as big as the whole piece of wood be very verrrrry careful to not have your fingers in the carved out parts while holding onto the piece and working ....i had to go to the hospital to get stiches and just cut myself again bc of not being careful enough so don't repeat my mistake!!
Oh man you gotta try it. With your talent I’m sure you can come up with something great. Check my channel out when you have some free time you can see my lures.
Enjoying the vid so far man, just some slight input. I'd suggest when recording do the initial recording as per usual, then do a separate voice recording taking about the piece you're working on such as the techniques, steps you're taking to achieve the desired design, maybe some tips about working with certain woods, exc. Otherwise I totally love the vid man, keep making more.
The ball in the cage is Good, But, how cool are those knife handles ??? Did you make them yourself ? Or buy in store or online ?? Never seen any like that before. Good luck, cheers, Les.
High, thanks for the reply and the info/ web site, had a look already and guess what ? everything is out of stock :-( untill Jan 2021. Also the same with Nick Westerman and a few others, little bit annoying really. But thank you anyway, have a great New Year buddy. Les.
Oh, I thought u wasn't gonna fast forward that much!😧 It would've been really nice for u to show your technique on carving the rest of it after u did the first 4 sides in the beginning... How u start on the ball for example.🤔
This would have been an incredibly long video or series of videos if I didn’t fast forward or cut a bunch out. Figured fast forward was better than cutting out. I guess if you need a step by step guild you could probably take a class somewhere. I learned by diving in and doing it. Hoped this little video would give folks some incentive to dive in and try it themselves. You should give it a try!
Hello Blubberboy18, thanks for watching. I'm using a roughout knife that has a little over an inch and half long blade. The knife was made by Helvie Knives. I like this particular knife because it seems to be just the right size for most things I work on. Here's a link to the website if you're interested. helvieknives.com/collections/knives
Great project, but just fast forwarding through 99 percent of your work is not helpful. We don’t mind nor are bored by some occasional moments of explanation.
Well this was worthless. You showed the stop cuts on one side, then did your fast forward bit. I thought just to do the other three sides, then show us the next set of cuts/technique. Noooo. You just blasted thru until done, and said “there you go”. Didn’t learn a thing, and got a siezure to boot.
Thank you for watching. I apologize for the lack of instruction, was going for a more general overview than a step by step video. Perhaps one day I’ll make a more in depth video of the ball in a cage. Thank you for your comment.

Thank you! It’s always nice to get a great comment like this. And it’s a good idea to make stuff for folks who are willing to buy you tools? 😁
I've been looking for this job to be explained in detail for some time. I always mess up. Thankfully I found you. Here's hoping🏴🤔😁🏴
Hopefully our explanation/video helps, good luck with your ball in a cage!!

Damn that Turrkey in the straw fit right in Thank You. Yup,! 😀
Thank you for inspiration
And nice video .😀
You’re very welcome. I’m glad you liked it.
Thanks for the vid. Would have liked to seen the project at various stages. 1 or 2 or 3 stops for a quick recap on the project.
Maybe next time.
Jim
Perhaps I’ll make a series of videos next time. Hope you got the gist of it.
Great video I'm gonna try it. Thanks a lot!!
I’m glad you liked it. It is a fun project, let me know how it goes.
Love it, my man!! Awesome!
Joe N thanks a bunch Joe!!!
Thank you Sir.
Have a good 2021
Happy 2021 to you as well!
This was great thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome, so glad you liked it!
I’ve been on a whittling kick lately myself and whittled 3 fishing lures from a branch I found.
@@Mikes_Life that sounds cool, I’ve never whittled a fishing lure.
Oh man you gotta try it. With your talent I’m sure you can come up with something great. Check my channel out when you have some free time you can see my lures.
@@Mikes_Life I’ll check it out!
I saw you put some foam it looks like as a protector for the blade, I would recommend cork, it fits easy and doesn’t cut through. :)
Also, I recommend using the wood shaving after as mulch for plants.
Great ideas, thank you!
Thank You for Sharing

I’m glad you’re enjoying the video. Thank you for the input, that’s a good idea. I’ll try that on the next one.
I feel like every whittler has to make one these at some point, but man is it tedious to make.
It is a bit tedious, but it takes your mind off your worries.
What wood did you use? Basswood? Cedar? Pine? A specific kind of wood would be helpful. Thank you so much!
I used Basswood. It’s a bit easier to carve than cedar or pine, and that’s what I had available.
That is basswood
Where can I buy these knives with colored handles, help me buy these knives!? Please!
You can purchase them from Helvie Knives at this website: helvieknives.com/
@@amuckdesign Thank you very much!!!

Hi Leslie, thank you! We didn’t make those beautiful knives, they are from Helvie Knives.

Very creative
What kind of knife is that. Love the handle. I’m just starting out and am using Flexcut brand
The knives in the video are made by Helvie Knives. They make lots of different blades and handles. I really like them.
What sorcercy is this?
😆
Love the video mate just please, in the future remember to use gloves ,you have such a skill that it would be a shame to ruin it due to an accident
How about a wood chain🏴👍👍👍😁🏴
We do have a video for a chain, very fun project for sure.
What brand of knifes are those
Hi Sean, they are Helvie knives.

Your very welcome, happy to share. It can be a little tricky to get the Helvie’s but worth the wait.
Awesome
Thank you Mick!!

Could you just drill out the parts that need to be hollowed out so you aren't doing so much with the knife?
Yes, you could. In fact, some folks creat the entire thing with no knife at all.
What kinda knife is that?,or did u make them?
I get most of my knives from Helvie. They make good knives. helvieknives.com/
I'm using a Dremel and I'm on day 2 and still not done. WTF
😄yeah, it’s not exactly a quick project. It might be easier to use a knife when you start shaping the ball. Good luck!
you kinda fast forwarded through some important steps in my opinion
Would have made for an awfully long video otherwise. Perhaps I’ll make a series of videos next time. Hope you got the gist of it.
Great project, but just fast forwarding through 99 percent of your work is not helpful. We don’t mind nor are bored by some occasional moments of explanation.
Thank you and good to know. I was afraid if I didn’t fast forward through some of it the video would be too long and people wouldn’t bother with it.
Yes I would have liked to see a bit more of the details as you were carving. The high speed makes it difficult to see your knife work
@@joeszymanski6936 maybe next time I’ll make a how-to video.

I appreciate your gracious response. I hope you do a more expansive follow up.
