I have worked both, salary is far and away better and more stable
It's amazing to me, actually, how many different ways employees are paid, In the oil field for example, you get paid at times, by the day, In trucking, it's by the mile, or percentage of load, subsequently, drivers aren't paid for all that they actually work. Then you have people that are paid with tips, and others on commission, there really seems to be no standard, it varies also what responsibilities an employer has towards paying unemployment insurance and workman's comp, or even taking out taxes.

This is greatly simplified. The decision to pay a salary vs wages is not simply because of the supervisory responsibilities. Be sure you understand what more is needed in order to analyze a position to determine whether it's to be paid with a salary or hourly wages. The federal law that determines the criteria is the Federal Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Some states, such as California, have more stringent rules that favor employees. As such, state wage and hour laws should be followed.

Piece work is ideal for able bodied workers. The more you produce the more $$$ you make, and the less you produce the less $$$ you make. Right to Work legislation is good, and so is pro scab legislation.

HI @Montana See if this helps. You only can be paid a salary if you supervise other people. Salaried people get paid a set amount each pay period. They don't get any pay for overtime. Hourly people get paid overtime and holiday pay etc.
