After reading that Rolling Stone interview, it's easy to see that he's doing his best to tell himself he's okay, but he's definitely having a really hard time. I feel so bad for him.
What are you, a mind reader?! ("he's doing his best to tell himself he's okay, but he's definitely having a really hard time"). Who are you to tell him he's definitely having a really hard time? I don't know what to tell you. Imagine pouring 10 years of your life into something like that, only to get booted like it meant nothing. That hurts.

I can see why he'd have a soft spot for Josh because for the longest time in the band, Chad was surrounded by people who acted like divas now and then.

This is one of the principle reasons why they are such a long-term successful band. Very successful people are all about community and teamwork. Very mediocre people are all about themselves...
If you watch carefully at 2.07, you'll see Anthony pointing out to Flea that he has failed to put his in-ear monitors into his ears...which is why he can't hear his bass clearly. No fault on the part of the audio crew, just Flea being a space cadet.
Josh and John are really close. I'm sure they all had an understanding that if John was ever ready, he would be welcomed back immediately to resume his position
