Hong Kong was mostly a small fishing community before becoming the "Pearl of the Orient". The last jewel in the crown of the British Empire, Hong Kong became a massive financial and trade centre between the 50s and 80s. Hong Kong is now a Special Administrative Region of China, and will remain so until 2047. Find out how this baron rocky area became catapulted to world prominence.

hello from Hong Kong!!!!!! thank you for doing a video on my hometown
I hope the 1 party rule will end in 2047. Then the 50 years expiry would not matter. Hongkonger can emulate Singaporean by staying in Shenzhen/rest of pearl river delta and work in HK without internal control.
Alan Tan Let me told you. The commies will never give up their power. So they will never allow another party to get supported by the people which will affects its position.
Alan Tan And that’s the main reason why HK is losing its authority. Because HK is a threat to the dictatorship of the communist and thus. HK need to be “ destroyed “
Alan Tan Also. Just remember the Mao once says that the party will not give up it’s power without a war ( or something like that). And that could be easily seen during the Tiananmen Square protests , which the peaceful Chinese protesters get crushed by tanks and shot by machine guns by the “ People’s Libration Army” which should protect its people
@@ouo1958 understood. Somebody needs to start a revolt in Mainland then.

They burned some in HU MEN city also.
@@sarahlin1591 NO,in Humen they used sea water to destroy the opium.
They used CaO in combination with sea water, which generates a awful amount of heat that can destroy the opium.

What democracy?
you are idiot, you think uk gave hongkong democracy. And your comment has so many likes, from other idiots
Throughout the whole colonial era, every single governor of HK was directly appointed by London. The locals NEVER got to elect their head of the government. You call this democracy?
1:36
The opium trade, which should have been mentioned, was the issues that led to the Opium Wars. The mass introduction of opium from the British East India Company (BEIC) was illegal according to Qing law, but was still accepted by Chinese merchants due to it being a lucrative trade product despite it being an illicit and illegal drug. The thing about BEIC opium was that it was better quality than domestic versions and became highly prized. This led to Qing officials to begin taking action and they confiscated the opium found that British merchants were importing and burned it all. British merchants were able to lobby their government to get compensation (opium is also illegal in Britain, so this was very hypocritical) and the British sent their navy and after failed negotiations, war occurred. The rest of course is history.
4:38
Most likely, Hong Kong will have a similar fate as Shanghai or Tianjin and become some form of municipality region that has direct control from the central government.
It was illegal in Britain because it is very unpatriotic to consume any drug besides tea
It wasn’t illegal in Britain. Licensed chemists could sell as much as they liked. There were opium dens in London were you could buy an evenings enjoyment . Opium at the time was seen as a wonder drug equal to any malady and the answer to everything. The Chinese already had a taste for it and the British supplied the best product.
4:35 You don’t have to wait that long to know what it’ll happen
this video was WAY TOO SHORT!
What would you add?
It missed things after 1997, like 2014 revolution
Helder Yysus I would add the great fire of shepkipmei which revolutionized the government’s building, or the tragic day of 1972 June 18 which help found the best geo engineering department in the world

Fun Fact: Hong Kong only has 27 years left before its officially part of China again.
Nah, we're not really sure what will happen in that year
Well great job, but you missed a whole bunch of stuff. 2003 SARS which HK took really badly, the leader of the Chinese revolution against the dynasty was set up in Hong Kong periodically, and you mentioned to rapid industrialization, but not the change from factories to pretty much only finance and business, becuase even in 2001 the tertiary industry was already 85.6% of the GDP in HK, with the rest being the secondary industry, unless you want to count the 0.1% GDP taken by the primary industry. And that change just never stopped. Also, I don't know if the major amount of protest happened yet when you made this video, but a bunch of protests happens as the protesters claim HK was being taken over by China by a few laws implemented. And then covid came, which you wouldn't have known. Anyway, great video, just mentioning a few things you missed.
