  • We continue our series on how to get started in 28mm Napoleonic Wargaming with the second half of the Waterloo set, the British! A much shorter video than the French one, that's not because it's a worse set, in fact quite the opposite!
I was going to photograph my minis as per the French one, but realised, I don't actually own any Warlord British! They hadn't made any when I started my collection, so sorry about that!
Please remember I'll be taking August off, but we've one more video before the break and I cannot wait to get back!
Thanks as ever for all your support, this channel wouldn't exist without you guys.
    Tim

I was thinking of starting with 4x14 man boxes of light dragoons With 4 commands of 2 men each. Plus a Calvary gun and basis. I would be just pulling one of the commanders out to act as a brigade commander initially.
my 2nd 100 would include 2 more guns for the Calvary battery A second base gun and the primary alternative that you talked about on the peninsula campaign video. A Highlander Box, a British Box and 3 commands squads to make most of the highlanders into 3 batalians of light infantry. Plus a Box of senior officers and A regiment of dragoons guards.

Just me from the future.... definitely take his advice. The Brits are my favorite so it's what I started off with a year or so ago when I first started in Napoleonics. I just went and bought a bunch of stuff and the selections I made were so all over and unorganized it was awful. So I found this channel and it's been like my bible ever since. I got the Brits with his suggestions and since then I've played with just the units from this video and it was perfect...not exaggerating this is the perfect way to start in my opinion. I can't speak to the french since I haven't started them but I've used these videos for starting my Prussian and Russians and again they were great. Long story short if you're new and at the point I was at last year then I definitely suggest using his how to start series if not exactly then I'd stick very close to it and I promise you guys won't regret it...take it from a guy who was just completely lost before I watched these

Nice going Tim. You're putting these out faster than I can comment. Sort of wish I'd have had your recommendations when I first started but on the other hand I really prefer the much more animated figures I had available at the time with an employee discount from the game shop I was working at then. They're mostly Old Glory metals, which require a lot of clean up before painting. They're all French because, for some reason that's what was on the discount table (even more discounts) but I've painted them up as Swiss & Irish for a bit more color. The point is that regardless of the subject matter, I just love listening & watching your videos as I'm painting or modeling my army. Even if I've scene them before 2 or three times, I can learn something or laugh at something new. By the which, how about a review of the new Warlord Prussian Cavalry or Perry's new Austrian Cavalry. The Perry's look an easy conversion for Russian Cuirassiers, I know you've got a Russian Army. Oh, probably my favorite Napoleonic personality, that I can't find hardly any info on, here in darkest America, Marshal Lanne, Please, please, oh pretty please? I know you like him too? I think for the britts, absolute best start is perrys brigade deal. For 83 pounds you get 144 line infantryman (6 batalions), 22 riflemen (16 plastic plus 6 command), canon and pack of commanders. You get flags, bases for infantry in it. Then you can expand as you want, especially becouse you can build them as peninsular ones and add portugese for varation

I think what I have really found most daunting is choosing the correct regiments and finding out both their correct colours and uniforms on deployment. I do have a British army, the one in the battle reports is mine. I use 24 man battalions for the Brits except the guard who are a large regiment at 32.
For the Frenxh I fo 36 man units for a few reasons, the first is that it makes organisation easier, 6 bases of 6, with one base being a company making the painting of the pom poms easier! Secondly, because they have the same uniform (particularly the collars and cuffs are all red) if you play someone that uses 24 man battalions, just take 2 bases off, combine them with the spare 2 bases from a second battalion and you've got another unit of 24!

Admittedly I've just started the Black Powder rulebook and the way it's laid out, it's not initially clear to me how the smaller units/skirmishers are used within the ruleset. A number of the gameplay videos I've watched are using primarily battalion size units. As I tend to buy and paint before playing, what section of the rulebook covers the use of skirmishers/small units such as the KGL you recommend buying here? Just need a pointer. Best regards!

@@NapoleonicWargaming Being bored, and inspired by the Starting Portuguese video, I decided to nail down a way to start peninsular British. It helped that I found the Perry Army deals... Would love to bounce ideas off of you, since I have no experience with Black Powder yet, but here's one way to do it:
      First Month:
Perry D21 British Brigade Deal - 4 plastic box sets of British Napoleonic Infantry (144 Line infantry, 16 Riflemen) 1 pack of colonels, 1 pack of Royal Foot Artillery, 1 pack of Rifle command. - £83
Quick math says that these will provide enough bodies for 6 battalions at 24 strong, since the Perrys tend to run large, just missing command. But they also do nice, cheap, single command sprues, so...
      2x Perry B20 British Napoleonic command sprue 1808-1815 - single sprue - £10
And being a bit cheeky, we'll also nab some cavalry command while we're direct ordering.
Perry B43 Napoleonic Britsh Light Dragoon command - £4
      Total £97
(+bases, so going a bit over this month)
Second Month, and when we stop just buying Perry plastics):
Perry BH 90 Napoleonic British Light Dragoons 1808-15 - £20
At 14 strong, Perry cavalry is also almost enough for 2 units, so adding the command from the first month rounds it out nicely.
Victrix British Napoleonic Foot Artillery - £21
Also, who doesn't love lots of cannons? And in plastic...
Warlord Mounted Napoleonic British Infantry Colonels (Peninsular War) - £8 (ish)
I'm uncertain how much command figures is "good", but you went with 5 in the video, so 5 is what I go for.
2x Warlord Napoleonic Portuguese Line Infantry - £40
And while we're at Warlord, might as well grab 2 units of Portuguese for some variety among the PBI (or we could go Victrix Highlanders, for half the price, if we're like that)
      Total: £89
Add in the £13,45 for bases, and we average out just under the £100, even if the first month is probably a bit over.
All of it, losely inspired by 3rd Division, too ;) (even if I couldn't find any good portuguese plastic cavalry :p )

is it possible to use Perry Austrian cavalry for Russian cuirassiers

    • @NapoleonicWargaming
      @NapoleonicWargaming  4 роки тому

I wouldn't personally. The Austrians only have a breastplate not a back piece and a low helmet rather than the tall Russian one. What you could do is paint then as Austrians and say the battle is in the 1805 campaign, or if later it's a brigade that served with them then and just stayed with the Russians

Yes we English call the Scots Jocks, its not an insult, Jock was a common male name in Scotland, just like Paddy is a common term for an Irishman, its used by Irish people too. Its not an insult either.

The Scots (and some Irish) used to call the English ‘Sassenachs’, which is slightly derogatory. It derives from the Old English for Saxons. Don’t know how common it is today. Suspect they have some rather more colourful terms now. Like Jock and Paddy it’s regarded as low intensity jibing, and not considered offensive (except by those ‘anointed’ ones who get offended at everything).
