Probably an unpopular opinion, but I prefer Fool Moon to Grave Peril. Could be that I have a fondness for werewolves and don’t find ghosts all that interesting, though.

I get why people dislike Fool Moon, but I love it so much. Its not my favorite or even one I'd consider great, but its not as bad as some make it out to be. Maybe its just my love of Werewolves, my love of Whodunnits, or what, but i cant help but love it.

I think the biggest part of the dislike for it is mostly that it doesn't *really* advance the story the way the rest of the novels do. It feels like a sequel for sequel's sake in a procedural cop show rather than the next in the Dresden Files

First of all: “Polka will never die!” Zombie TRex is pretty iconic, and Butters is amazing.
I would personally bump fool moon up and ghost story down both to C with storm front all of them have their moments. Storm front and fool moon are just a “young author” finding his groove and I can understand that. Ghost story was him writing his way out of a corner, and while he pulls it out and has some great moments of redemption for Mortimer I do wonder if that story arc was really necessary or if Butcher just got bored and overly experimental.
Peace Talks/Battle Ground are definitely two halves of the same story and do need to be thought of as such. Personally I love Battle Ground for many reasons, not the least of which is Mab’s battle unicorn. Like of course Mab has a battle unicorn!
Also agreed it is tragic that the hard covers are out of print (I’m missing 3 and it makes me mad every time I look at my bookshelf) and why on earth are there not collectors editions of these yet?!

I've always seen Changes, Ghost Story, and Cold Days as one arc. A bit like a mini trilogy. Where we depart from the episodic detective 'noire' style.
I mean... the 'changes' starting in Changes only really conclude in Cold Days.
Don't get me wrong. I don't think they should be one book like Peace Talks and Battle Grounds, but... I still see them as one 'story'.

@@kehrbaer90 Very good point. They are definitely all part of the same arc. Though I feel like the outter two do more to move the overall series plot line.

I agree with that. I wish Peace Talks and Battle Ground was one book, I think it would have been incredible to read that massive tome with the PT ending twist in the middle and then it just going crazy in the 2nd half. As it turned out with 2 separate books.. individually I enjoy them but neither feels complete.
And yea, Skin Game is the best one. When he meets Maggie..

@@regulah2125 There is two conversations between Harry and Michael. So many people mention their talk at the end, but to me it's the one in the middle, when he goes to Michael's house, he is hurt and when Michael opens the door he asks for help. That conversation is wonderful. Michael knocks Harry down a peg just as he needs it, builds him up just as he needs it and is THE BEST FRIEND. Love Michael.

All 3 of the denarian books are some of the best in the series. Partially because they are the best of the villains in the series. The other reason is because Michael Carpenter is the best and getting him starring in a book is also the best.

I discovered your channel from the UA-cam algo. I'm a huge Dresden fan as well. Agree with your ratings. I can see your point about Peace Talks and Battle Ground, but they were wildly different. One being another heist and one being a war. I wasn't a hater of Battle Ground. It made me cry, but I didn't hate it. And from a non-emotional pov, Murphy's storyline either had to end or she needed to power up big to keep up. Lots of people think she'll come back, maybe as a Valkyrie. We'll see. I want the next book, but it's a long way off.

1st post on youtube...had to do it.
    1. Ghost Story, not Fool Moon is definitely the "worst" book.
    2. Harry meets Susan in Storm Front, she's there when he fight's Victor Shadowmans toad demon
    3. Mar-cone...like ice cream "cone", not Mar-cone-ee
    4. Uriel not Raphiel. Mr Sunshine is a prominent figure throughout
    5. Video section breakdown says "Turncode" not "Turn Coat", maybe a youtube error?
    6. White Council, not "wizard council"
    7. From "I used the knife, I won the war to the end"....it was the end when he said that?
    8. Paper Shortage as the reason Peace Talks and Battlegrounds were split into 2 books...? He still printed the same number of pages, actually more because of bindings and book covers/sleeves. It was split due to too much content for 1 book.
    9. He didn't kill Ethniu...
I like the energy and anything that brings attention to Dresden, its my favorite series of all time. But me thinks you read the series maybe once with some skimming heh. Either that or I am way too much of a Dresden nerd for even myself to fully admit. Either way congrats on finishing a book, I hope I have one in me one day. Keep on writing!

Dresden is what got me into urban fantasy and i still think its the best series. Listening to the audiobooks for the umpteenth time. Must admit Storm Front isnt good and it shows when James Marsters is reading it. I agree Peqce talks and Battle Ground would have been better in one book, but by the end of it I was in floods, you know why. I love your enthusiasm for all things Dresden.

Hard to Pick between Iron Druid, Dresden, and Monster Hunter International. For 1, 2, and 3 spots for me.

Really enjoy your list! I read storm front about twelve years ago not knowing much about Dresden. There wasn’t as much hype for the series out there at that time and it was sold to me as a detective novel with magic by my friend. So when I read it my expectations were kind of low and I ended up finishing it in one sitting and loving it. I have fond memories of it and it really got me hyped up enough to knock out the next four or five books pretty quickly. I think now when people read storm front they are usually being sold on the hype of the series as a whole and considering how epic some of the later books have been that kind of sets people up for being underwhelmed when they check out storm front. I do think it’s definitely got that debut novel vibe with a few obvious flaws but I think it’s solid and on my own tier list it would probably be a solid B tier. So my advice to anyone starting the series would be to avoid a lot of talk about the later novels and kind of view it as a modern noir detective series with fantasy elements and let the more epic things about the series get to you naturally and I think you will find it very rewarding.

  • @jonihewston2011

Oh, I can't believe you didn't know the story behind Peace Talks and Battleground becoming two books. It was such a big book that Jim was told it would have to be a $50 book. He said no, I won't be "that guy". I won't put out a book that people have to pay $50 for. So he split it in two and reworked it so they are two more reasonably priced books instead of one expensive book. And I think he said he actually liked how it went after he reworked it better than he'd liked it when it was all one book.

Summer Knight gets a high mark for me because Harry enters a sword duel with a high fae lord or whatever and, upon being outskilled, pulls out a revolver and shoots him in the chest.
The book was sort of a drag, but I think about that moment biweekly.

I was really impressed in the world building of Ghost Story. Butcher completely changed all the rules placing Harry in a huge predicament and denying him so much of his former power, and yet Harry finds a way to come through it all. It also explains in detail a whole new dimension of the spirit world which is just another facet of the Dresden Universe.

    • @oirvine
      @oirvine 6 місяців тому

I agree. To me Ghost Story is the best of the series. My biggest regret is that Butcher never had Harry take what he learned in ghost stories and move it into the future of the series. I think that was a big miss on Butcher's part.

    • @totesmagotes213
      @totesmagotes213 4 місяці тому +1

Ghost Story is underrated for sure. Yeah it was light on action and has one of the worst finales in the series, but the character focus for Dresden and the impact that his “death” had on his friends and world was so impactful. I imagine the next book will serve as somewhat of a “reset” after Battle Ground. Status Quo changes require a moment to breathe and that book gave us just that.

Fool Moon sets up the fact that someone is behind these attacks on Harry. They got the wolf belts from a Sidhe. Was it Mab? Seems like she was reeling Harry in the whole time. l like every book, but Grave Peril is where I start re-reads. Great list

  • @mtverv
    @mtverv Місяць тому +1

Seen this video a couple of times so I figured I’d give my two cents.
Storm Front- C Tier. Really good opening for the reason of Harry himself. You really get to know him and start pulling for him.
Fool Moon- D Tier. Spoiler there are no F Tier Dresden books which I classify as utterly unreadable. There are good things here. The dynamic with Kim, the Alphas, the expansion of the lore and mythology it’s just not up to par with the other Dresden books. Better than 80-85% of other mainstream book releases but the weakest Dresden.
Grave Peril- A Tier. Here’s where it starts. By the end of the first “scene” which I classify as Harry and Michael back in the Hospital about to be arrested I knew I was in for the long haul. It gets a Tier bump because of that.
Summer Knight- C Tier. Yeah I have no idea how you have Summer Knight so high man lol. I LOATHE Elaine and never for one second did I trust her, looking back while Murphy is pretty good in this what happens later with her (not her death but the way she treats Harry from basically Proven Guilty to Skin Game) brings this one down, and quite frankly I don’t like the Fae Court nearly as much as the Vampires and the Denarians. You seem to have the opposite opinion when it comes to the Fae and the Vampires which is fine I guess but this book definitely suffers for its Fae focus.
Death Masks- A Tier. Michael and the Knights, the Denarians are introduced, the first step of the fallout from GP coming with Ortega, the Archive, Kincaid. Man there is so much awesome in this book I can’t fit it all here.
Blood Rites- B Tier. Yeah I know the source material isn’t great for people who don’t have the best suspension of disbelief abilities but for those of us who do this part of the book doesn’t bother us as much lol. Also some of the best action and absolutely some of the best emotional moments are in this book. This is quite comfortably my Soft Spot Dresden Book.
Dead Beat- S Tier. I’m unapologetic when I say this is clearly the 2nd best book in the Series. No Murphy (who has started her downward slide here) added to all the things you said makes this an incredible book
Proven Guilty- B Tier. It’s another Fae based book and really the only thing that saves it is Molly and what she could mean to Harry as his student moving forward. The Harry/Murphy ship should have docked here and never gone back out on the water.
White Night- B Tier. Good set-up and love the Vampire focus. Their plan it is evil and diabolical in ways that only a fictional plan can be however it’s REALLY dragged down by the presence of Elaine. I’m sorry I just don’t believe her in any way, shape, or form lol. However it does have one of my favorite lines in the whole Series in “Everything I can, dear host.”
Small Favor- A Tier. Very near S Tier as I’m sure people expect the Denarian books to be.
Turn Coat- A Tier. Morgan and Listens-To-Wind vs. Shagnasty. Need I say more lol
Changes- SS Tier. The best book in the Series and one of the best Books of All-Time full stop
Ghost Story- C Tier. Different kind of story that shows just how good Harry is for the world but it just didn’t click for me the way it does for some people. However it also does contain one of the best lines in the Series in “Lies. Mab cannot change who you are.”
Cold Days- A Tier. This book is the A Tier book closest to being an S Tier even though it has one of the saddest things happen to beloved character in the whole Series.
Skin Game- S Tier. Denarian book, the heist, lightsaber, Michael, and talking with a God. Man it’s so good.
Peace Talks/Battle Ground- S Tier. Epic in story, epic in scope, epic in emotional moments. Man Butcher has really figured it out.
Man I can’t wait for Twelve Months. I very much disagree with your take on Lara though. I’m much closer to Harry at the end of White Night’s opinion of her…

I've been reading these books since 09 and have reread them all way too many times. Here's my take take:

    6. B
    7. A
    8. B
    9. B
    10. A
    11. S (honestly my favorite book in the series)
    12. A (okay, this book is a feat but I also think it can't be overstated that it is hard to read, the moment with the knife and the altar is my favorite moment in the entire series. But I always have to prepare myself to read this book again)
    13. D (Love the stuff in Molly's mind if it was just that A)
    14. A
    15. S
16/17. D (there are parts of these that I really enjoy he does the big moments really well. The fight with the black court, The death reaction, In the final fight But so much of it feels like filler and smashing action figures together)
