We collect junk mail to line the bottom of our bird's cage. We could recycle that even further by scraping it into a box (100% recycled cardboard of course) and mailing it to Kirribilli house.
Basically you just get you some cardboard, cover it with glue using a paintbrush, place down a layer of newspaper with as little wrinkles as possible, and repeat at least once or twice or maybe more times if you want depending on the thickness of the cardboard. If you do get wrinkles, put some glue under the wrinkle, press it down, and either put more glue over it with a paintbrush (small) or place something on top of it to keep it down (big). This works for lifted corners too. Make sure your newspaper goes past the edges of your cardboard on all sides. Glue this down or cut it off and secure the sides with some glue and a paintbrush. Just in case anyone wants to know.
I use junk mail paper, to line my ratty's cage & also as bedding for them, too! If you crunch up paper, it gets soft, & it easily tears into strips, when torn from the correct side (one way will tear crappily & the other way will tear cleanly into strips).
I was under the impression you shouldn’t do that for any creature that’s actually going to be in the paper because the ink may be toxic. Is that not the case?
@@JacquelineUnderwood - I've heard back & forth stuff from many different rat groups over the years, so Idk, but I put fleece over the newspaper & also paper towels & fleece, when used in bedding areas, so they're not like, in in, it. Using it like I have been, over many different ratties, I've never seen any detriments, & their vet has never said anything, but I don't join any rat groups anymore, since, 2016, cause there was lots of drama, conflicting info, verbal abuse.
I really like the gray color from all those inks blending together!! I’ve had paper making in the back of mind for some time, and the screen/mesh is a really important bit to get! I know what I’m going to do when I’m done with my finals!!

This'll probably be against everything you believe in but....Have you considered working with halloween catalogs that you buy bulk stuff for big parties? They have millions of decorations and your ideas 💡 just remind me of all the Halloween catalogs i looked at as a kid. I remember oriental trading as the brand I'd read right before Halloween really came around the corner
My friends gave me this old book they had graffitied when they were younger knowing I would probably do something with it. So I shredded it and made it into new paper into new paper. And then I recovered the book and binded the paper to make a new journal for them.
When you have it at the point before you put it on the screen, but after blending, you can add dried plant materials like leaves and flower petals for interesting variations. You could add spent tea leaves (or herbal tea) for color and fragrance... You can even add small seeds and make plantable paper scraps.
I like the reusing vibe but I've found all homemade paper to have an unpleasant sponge-like texture that pens and pencils do not do well on, unfortunately
Junk mail can also make a good stencil if it's the hard cardstock stuff. All you need to do is just draw a design on there, Cut it out properly with some exacto knives, and.... boom! Free stencil!
I have a company that on regular occasion sends whole ass books. Like, I'm talking Harry Potter sized books. Why!? I barely have time for normal books, why would I read your dumb book of overpriced stuff that I don't want??
No individuals action from those of us in the 99 percentile will do much environmentally, but if a bunch of us sign up to get less junk mail, we'll get less junk mail which will be cool because junk mail is annoying. And for 10-20 % of junk mail that remains we can have a fun time making homemade paper. Because making stuff is fun. I mean not you. You strike me as someone who prefers harassing people online to get your kicks vs learning new skills or making things, which like to each their own I suppose but I'm going to keep doing me and making my non responsible mentally unstable videos 😁. Why? You can recycle it, but instead of people incorrectly throwing it out and it ending up in a landfill, if you receive it and sign up to opt out of this kind of mail, you already have this kicking around, why not make a fun project out of it? Seriously, who peed in your cornflakes this morning?
I used to make TP like this for folks that didn't want to use the mismatched sock pile on their butts ... I think I was doing my part towards zero waste... Buy less throw away less ... Makes sense to me

I make canvases out of cardboard and newspaper. Paint it white first but its good nonetheless and you can make it any shape you want.

It's never hurt any of my boys. One of my boys even lived waaaay passed a rat's life expectancy.
I put junk mail/any old papers through a shredder to make bedding for our birds. You can also use it for packing away breakables in boxes.

I’ve done this on a much much much smaller scale with just my hands, made a tiny jar of mayonnaise (well really it was just a paper cylinder but yeah)
