Best Recommendations and explanations on UA-cam. Most youtubers only speak on youtubing, you never really get authentic reviews in relation to the rest of the film world. To them 60W is super bright lol, which in reality they are not. Thanks
Great video. I don't know if it's your humor, or just mine, but I appreciate how you zoom and frame enough into "Don't use on lights above 200w or above" at around 9:15 warning label while it's attached to your nanlite 300 to notice it :) I also appreciate you actually addressing that just a little later after that and saying why you are comfortable with it. Thank you for the video though. I have a bunch of 40w~120w lights because of wedding work and needing to use vmounts/batteries, but this light will be a great addition for some planned studio products this year. Extremely well made video.
Haha yeah! I ran the original model for several hours straight with a 500w light as they gave that limit but the new 200w suggestion makes a lot more sense
One of my favorite little features of the FS300B is that it doesn't have a giant power brick unlike nearly every other light. Helps traveling. Also, you can buy longer cables and not even need extension cables .
I'm gonna need you to delete this video. I've been slowly buying up the supply of these the last year or so and I don't need you blowing up my spot. I hang these overhead on a cyc. They're perfect because they don't have a control box and have good balance for modifiers which a lot of those budget, super small lights don't have. I highly highly recommend. Also, cases are great for a bit, but if you consider upgrading to crates. The muscle crates on Amazon that are longer and come in packs of 3, they fit 2 of them without the reflectors (which are rarely used let's be real).
I picked up three of these lights and they fit into a single hard case. They are hard to beat for their output. Though I definitely love the extra power of the SmallRig 450b, especially when using a large softbox it feels 450 is often at 80-100%. But if I'm shooting in a space that is not competing with Windows, then these FS300b are bomb.
I have wanted to pull the trigger on the 300, but the battery option is important to me. I do have the 720b and the 60c, but was looking for something in the middle.
i know they make a optional ballast for the FC line that allows for v mount but it’s like $400 which at that point I think would be better spent on the forza line. only would make sense for someone who already owns a bunch of the fc line
You could look at picking up a 1000 watt hour lithium battery pack with the built-in inverter. They are around $400 when on sale and will get you equivalent of 10x the 99 w/h V-mount batteries and you can power multiple lights not just one. Also, a battery "generator" can power things like a hazer, a tv for video village, a few lights, etc for hours. I use then when teleprompting on larger commercial sets.
@@travisminneapolis Amazing. Yeah I have looked at a few but haven't pulled the trigger on one yet. Glad to hear those work well and could def see myself going the same direction as opposed to v mounts!
Thanks for the informative and helpful video. I’ve been very close to buying this light. It looks like a great deal for the price. But I’m kind of torn between buying the daylight version or the bicolor version. The bicolor light has obvious advantages, but I have concerns about whether it will work with the Nanlite fresnel lens attachment. I’ve read that sometimes that fresnel lens attachments don’t work correctly with bicolor lights because of the way the chips are arrayed . Have you tried a fresnel lens with this light? If I remember correctly, the problem had something to do with the fact that a daylight chip was a single chip, but bicolor chips lights had multiple chips that are arrayed in rows. But maybe Nanlite has figured out a way to make the bicolor light work with their fresnel attachment. If anyone knows the answer to this question, I would appreciate it if you would let me know.
Thanks man and good question. Here are some thoughts! I previously owned the daylight version. Found the chip harder to cut / use as a hard light source as it has a wide hexagon design. Works great in a softbox. To my knowledge the daylight version also does not have a significant output difference, compared to the bi color. I use the bi color version with the Smallrig Fresnel regularly without any issues and don't see banding of any kind across the temp range. That said, I have not had a chance to try it with the one from Nanlite so not sure if it would be different.
@ Thanks. That’s helpful information. Just knowing that there is at least one fresnel that will work with It is good to know. So I’ll probably go with the bicolor then. I sent an email to the customer support of Nanlite and asked them this question. if I hear back from them, I’ll update this comment.
@@blasepivovar I just watched a video on the Nanlite UA-cam channel. Nanlite said in the comments that they don’t recommend using their fresnel on the FS series due to it not being optimized for the fresnel. They recommend using the Forza series with the fresnel. But it sounds like you have gotten reasonably decent results with the Smallrig fresnel. So I may give that a try. In any case, I think I will give the FS 300 bicolor a try. It just seems like such a good deal at that price even if it doesn’t work with their fresnel.
@@KMLR2012 interesting! yeah my experience with the smallrig fresnel has been great. you will have to report back with your findings. i'm curious as well.
@@blasepivovar I don’t know whether you have updated your firmware since you bought it. But I just saw a comment under a review video for the light that says that due to customer complaints about fan noise, Nanlite had done a firmware update that supposedly reduces the fan noise. I don’t know when the firmware update was, but the comment was from around five months ago.
hey man! thank you. tons of videos here on the channel with breakdowns but in short these days I am rocking the Fuji XH2S, XT5, Sigma Art 18-35, Tamron 17-70
You're the reason I'm thinking about going with Nanlite. I have the FS-300 right now and was about to pull the trigger on the FC60 or 120 to pair with it, especially since I can use a remote with them. But recently Ive been looking at selling my FS-300 going with Neewer for my cheap lighting set up. Getting an FS230 and that new HB80c. Please tell me to stop overthinking and just stick with Nanlite 😂
Haha! Making you think! So totally depends on the work you are doing but if you already have Nanlite I don't see a huge benefit in changing? Here are some thoughts! The FC60/120 have the large power bricks which I don't love (sorta defeats the purpose of having a tiny, compact light). I own two of the FS60B's and love them for small, compact lights (Only $107/ea). One power cable on those as well. I personally am not a fan of lights with a built in battery. They don't really last a useable amount of time and just see a host of issues down the road if it were to stop working / get damaged. That said, if a super compact light like the HB80c is desired, I think SIRUI's C150X is the most intriguing out of all the ones I have seen. Again, totally depends on the work you are doing so hard to say without knowing more :)
@@blasepivovar thanks for actually getting back man. The two points you made in the video about anything between 60-200 is just splitting hairs, and using a reputable name definitely hit for me. I got the FC60 over the FS because I'd use it with a V mount setup so I have a portable light. I feel you on not liking built in batteries, its definitely a rish. Think this might have convinced me to just start investing in Nanlite. Thank you man
@@blasepivovar Hey, i also forgot to mention. I had the same issue with the FS300 and needing to adjust both knobs to move it. But if you play around with it. You can set it up to where you have one side not too loose, and not too tight. and then to make an adjustment, all you have to do is lossen the opposite side. The right side of my mount hasn't changed in a year so I can make all my adjustments with my left hand. Hope that makes sense and helps.
Pulling down some highs in post will get rid of that fingernail scraping on a chalk board, vocal fry / gravelly tone, like the mic is in your mouth. Smoothing out vocals will make the audible experience, being as smooth and exceptional as all of your amazing artistic shots. Thank you

They need to sponsor. They just got a new customer because of this video. Thank you for sharing ❤
haha i’d be down!

yeah they are great!
Excellent video brother! I run a small production company in East Tennessee and we use the Nanlite as our main key regularly. It's killer!

I put rubber washers between the gear teeth. That gives me total control over where I can point the light.

SO GLAD I FOUND YOUR CHANNEL! 🙌🏾 Subbed immediately! Amazing content
glad to have ya!
I had that light and I can tell it's definitely amazing. Even if I got stronger lights, I regret selling it.
it's truly great!
Thoughts on the Neewer Q300? Also 300 Watts, Bi-Color lirght but doesn't seem as reliable of a brand as the Nanlite.
yeah more expensive and less of a brand you can grow with. Also I think the Q300 is a Strobe, not a continuous light
