What most people get wrong is that Chalamet is based on Wilder's portrayal which was just based on making a movie out of it, whereas Depp's is exclusively based on the book and Burton's interpretation (to the point Burton avoided seeing the original movie before making his version).
@@Summerplayzeoh please do and this is coming from someone who grew up with Depp’s version and only discovered Gene’s version this year and now loves it much more than the 2005 adaptation
Every Tim Burton directed movie with Depp is dark. Willy Wonka wasn't suppose to be dark, it was suppose to be a delightful experience, a lesson to be learned. Tim Burton turned Wonka into a Candy Frankenstein which scares little children. Roald Dahl wrote Wonka as a children's novel. Depp's Wonka is evil towards children and all the Oompa Loompas are dressed in Latex bondage suits. It's Edward Scissorhands with a bit of Wonka Eye Candy
I agree. Wilder was so multi-layered as Willy Wonka. It doesn't matter to me that the author of the book hated Wilder and Wilder's version. P. L. Travers hated all aspects of the Mary Poppins movie and yet I think that movie is amazing too. Wilder's Wonka was clever, crafty, mysterious, and artistic. I loved seeing the darkness underneath the bright whimsy of the movie also. To me, the Burton version didn't have any layers, or craftiness: It was just straight out told to you.
Unpopular opinion, but this was an origin story it’s not supposed to be the same. Timothee did an Amazing job of showing Willy’s youth and naïveté and the road to how he became the paranoid Wonka in the Wilder movie. The Burton/Depp colab is based more on the books than any of the movies. But take a break on Chalamet. He did an amazing job and my kids and I will definitely be going back to the theater to see it again!
Definitely agree with you on the origin story... he's not supposed to haveca weary world view yet or else he wouldn't have carried on with his vision... and the chocolate river was in the factory, not his first ever shop 😊 I loved all the little Gene Wilder hat-nods that Timothee gave and the pure imagination song at the end made me cry happy tears. I'll be seeing it again and I'm 47 😂
Grew up with Wilder’s version and he did great. The OG. But Depp brought out what Wilder’s didn’t. Creepy, sarcastic, and fun at the same time. How the books portrayed him.
@@Ad-fu6tj Well that scene was parodised by HISHE channel - after that moment all contestants became so frightened they decide to forgo the trip and abandon the factory ("Mister Wonka this is riduculous!", "What does this have with chocolate?!", "I wish I never won this contest! ").
Grew up with Depp's version. Read the book before i saw the movie, Johnny Depp's portrayal is kinda on point for how i imagined the character to be (did not know it was a remake at that time). Plus the young cast did not disappoint.
Depp/Burton's version is NOT a remake, it's a movie based on the same book, but Burton went out of his way not to see the original movie before making his version.

I think you may have misunderstood the message of Depp’s Wonka. The message of Depp’s Wonka is the importance of family and reuniting with family. One of the reasons Wonka became a deranged as he was in the Depp version is because of his resentment towards his father. Once he mended that resentment, he began to see the importance of family, and not only did he mend the relationship with his own father, but he also gained a family through Charlie’s family as well.

Timothy is perfect as a sweet and innocent young Wonka, before the sarcasm crept into his character. The sarcasm in Wilder's old Wonka is what I loved most about the original movie. Hugh Grant is by far the best Oompa lumpa though! 😄 Wonka was completely magical! I want to watch it again.

All 3 of these guys nailed it! Hard for me to choose. They did a great job with the 2005 film. And I can see Tim as a younger Gene Wilder. Many franchises jump the shark overtime. So far the Wonka franchise is still strong
Gene Wilder will never be topped. He is top notch and had so much charm.😊😊 I do hope Timotheé gets nominated for an Oscar though; he did a fantastic job❤❤
Wilder created the iconic character and will forever hold that title. Chalamet brings so much wonder to the role; he really is Wonka, just as much as Wilder is. Also, I adore the songs in Wonka, they only get better, the more I listen to them.
In my opinion, Johnny Depp was the best Wonka. He played the character the way Roald Dahl would’ve wanted it. I know that everyone is partial to Gene Wilder because he was the first Wonka, but I just like what Johnny Depp brings to the character more.
Actually it depends on what you are looking for. I read the book and watched the 2005 version all my life. It’s only this year (2023) that I discovered the 1971 version while waiting for the Wonka prequel movie to be released. And you know what? I wholeheartedly love the 1971 version and Gene Wilder’s Wonka despite only seeing it this year. I know Dahl disowned the 1971 movie but to me now, the warm and cosy 70’s version beats the 2005 version by a long shot despite not being all that faithful to the book.
Johnny Depp’s Wonka will always be the best to me. His Wonka, though slightly younger, was more to how Wonka was portrayed in the original book, with his naughtiness and wickedness. As was the rest of the movie.
nothing, and i mean this, NOTHING will ever beat Wilder's portrayal. he brought everything to the role and created a character that has stood the test of time. he's the reason the original movie is my ultimate comfort film
You know what? I love the ranking. 1) Gene Wilder, 2) Timothée Chalamet & 3) Johnny Depp Kinda Like the Spider-Man Actors 1) Tobey Maguire, 2) Tom Holland and 3) Andrew Garfield
I just got back from seeing the new Wonka movie. I gotta say that as much as Gene Wilder is ICONIC I loved Timothy Chalamet.. I did not mind his naïveté when it came to his humor.❤
I think of Chalamet as the younger Gene Wilder Wonka. His representation of the youthful inventor, still in his struggling beginning, has his whole career ahead, to gain the experience, wit and cynicism of when he become's Wilder's age. I loved Chalamet's performance, and it made me love Wilder's Wonka even more.
I believe Wilder does a great job as the older Wonka. Willy Wonka was what I grew up with and I will always love his portrayal. However I loved Timotheé as the younger Wonka. He brings the curiosity and innocence to the world a young Wonka would have. In my opinion, Wilder and Timotheé need to stand apart because their Wonkas are supposed to be different. They both have the perfect portrayals for the time their movies take place. Also LOVED Wonka. Go see it if you haven’t!
Wilders, 100% serial killer. Depps, ... strong stranger danger vibes a la Michael Jackson. Chalamets , sweet and kind. I like them all.. but yeah. Very different takes.
@@DarkwolfRedsoul That’s kind of cool, actually. I can’t imagine what it’s like seeing it for the first time as an adult. Then again, I did see the Depp one as an adult and I was supremely unimpressed. Haven’t seen the other one at this point.
Depp's Wonka character, Is overall just goofy, menacing and hillarious! best one in my opinion! the other 2 are also amazing, i just find depp's wonka much funnier
Gene Wilder is who I think when I think of Willy Wonka. The same way I think of Christopher Reeve when I think of Superman. Well, sometimes Henry Cavill in more modern times. But I do not think of Jonny Depp as Wonka. Johnny is Jack Sparrow.
I think is Gene Wilder, Johnny Depp, and Timothee Chalamet are all number 1. I Love them All because now they gave a younger Willy Wonka. Thank You Hollywood for taking the time to created a younger Willy Wonka! I give the 3 films of the Great Willy Wonka a number 1. They all Wonderful! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Gene Wilder's version of Wonka is my favourite, but the new Wonka movie as a whole was my favourite out of the three. The story was so heartwarming, and the movie had amazing visuals and such beautiful and original songs and music. For a Moment, Scrub Scrub, and Sweet Tooth were such incredible original songs!! I think the talents of the directing and composers need to be recognized!
I haven't seen Chalamet, but Wilder is the only Wonka for me. He was the perfect combination of heart, humour, danger, unpredictability and eccentricity. He embodies Roald Dahl's writing perfectly- the dark and scary moral core of traditional fairy tales, but with satisfying accountability for the bad characters and a happy ending for the good ones.
Charlie and the Chocolate factory's soundtrack isn't hard to follow imo. Danny Elfman brings his signature darker score which gives This Wonka more an air of mystery where the original film showed more a Whimsical and cheerful side. The songs in Willy Wonka are definitely memorable, 'Pure imagination' is Beautiful piece of music, but I like the Oompa Loompa tunes in the Charlie version a little bit more because One: they're funny and two: The utilization of different genres of music is refreshing instead of reusing the same tune. Gene's Wonka will always be an icon, However I feel Depp's version gets too much disdain. He's awkward, introverted around these people when he hasn't had any contact with Anyone outside of the Oompa Loompas in years, his response is pretty understanding in my opinion. I haven't seen 'Wonka' yet for a issue I have with the casting of Timonthy Chalamet as the titular character. He's probably good in his performance, I just never got onboard the fanbase he has.
I probably will see the film eventually. The film was a smash financially, so It doesn't matter if I see it in the cinema. I just like the versions of Wonka I grew up watching. @@tracypvi
For me is Gene Wilder, Tomothee Chalament and far behind the other two Johnny Depp. Wilder is the first and the original, and because of my memories as a child watching the movie it has tons of power in my ranking. Chalament did an amazing job he is funny, weird and caring which for me are the qualities of a good Wonka same as Wilder. All do I like Deep as an actor for me he goes extra heavy on the weird and forgets the funny and caring. That is my opinion and ranking.
I have to agree, timothee version had a lot of nostalgia imo. Also, it seems like ppl forget that this is a prequel, so timothee’s is the closest to how I would imagine the younger version of gene wilder’s wonka.
I understand it’s your opinion. BUT another comment I read on here is that original book was NEVER as light hearted (at least in terms of Wonka attitude) as the 1971 film. Things were changed for Wilders version. So apparently Depps version was CLOSER to the book in that way. It’s ok to prefer a more light hearted Wonka BUT again Depp wasn’t inaccurate. Not enough ppl read the books
I think 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory' and 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' need to switch names because they focus more on the other character.
Wilder is the best and I miss him but I'm glad they chose Timothee Chalamet for the prequel because I think he's so damned good at what he does and he can only add to the Wonka lore
Sorry but not sorry I think Charlie and the chocolate factory is the superior version due to it's dedication to the source material that roald Dahl would of been proud of 😊
Candy Man: Chalamet Humor: Wilder and Depp Songs: Depp(I am not a musical guy. The songs are more unique in this version, and Cheer up Charlie in the original film is insufferable) Sending a message: All 3 Pure Imagination: Depp So, with a score of 2-4-2, Depp's version wins to me. Wilder gave a better performance, but Depp was in the best movie.
The Tim Burton & Johnny Depp version is the best in my opinion. For 1 it’s actually pretty close to the book & aesthetically pleasing to look at especially the chocolate room. Johnny does a great job at being funny & creepy especially with his quick 1 liners. The music is by far the best & more catchy to listen to
Nostalgia aside, Johnny Depp nailed it, his acting in the movie gave that strange, weird and awkward vibe. OG is OG, but their will always be something which will be better than original.
Srry but Johnny Depp’s was the best. Especially the chocolate room and the story. It taught the importance of family and that success is earned through hard work
The new Wonka doesn't have the magic or the special charisma and whimsical personality that only Gene Wilder had. He brought the character to memorable life and was brilliant in doing so! Nothing can top Gene Wilder. Saw the new Wonka and why doesn't Timothee Chalmette have the beautiful blue eyes. It seems like they could have used contacts so that he was more believable but there was more missing than just that and the magic hat seemed strange that wasn't needed as a distraction from the magic that was missing from the entire movie. They've tried to remake this movie twice and neither have captured the essence and the charm that Gene Wilder portrayed perfectly! No, this one wasn't memorable and will not replace the perfection that Willy Wonks and the Chocolate Factory with Gene Wilder that will forever hold a special place in my heart! 😊💛🐝💛🍫🍬🍭🍫🍬🍭🍫🍬🍭
Gene Wilder is the best for me, always. His 1971 film is part of my childhood. Wilder the actor said fans came up to him for years after the film, reminiscing about Wonka. To me, Depp is a very creepy Wonka.
@@elizabrookespams Well I could handle Wilder’s benign creepiness, really it was wackiness. I was a kid when I saw the 1971 film, and I have rewatched it as an adult. To me Wilder is unusual and loony. I can’t watch Depp’s Wonka. It just unnerves me and creeps me out. Too much.
Maybe it is the nostalgia, because it was the version I grew up with, but for me Johnny Depp will be the best Wonka. I thought the other two were good, too, but as someone who has read the book, I feel like the Burton adaption is most fateful for the source material too.
Mom and I were in an elevator once talking about the movies with Wilder and Depp, all of a sudden the only other person riding the elevator turned to us and agreed with us when we said that Gene Wilder was, and would always be the best Willy Wonka ever 🍫
Johnny Depp was alright as Wonka, but we could have done without the unnecessary backstory of his opposing dentist father. The original book and film didn't delve into Wonka's background, as the focus was on Charlie, and was arguably all the better for it.
As a GenXer, I definitely say Wilder is the best Wonka. I didn't like Johnny Depp's version. He was creepy without the warmth. I haven't seen Timothee Chalamet's version but from the clips, it feels like he has the tone right.

Thank you! I think Johnny gets too much hate Granted I don't like his hair choice But I like his version Way better than The original❤
@peterhinricha711
YES!! idk why people won’t recognize how good he played that role. Heck, he changed his whole voice for it!
@@elizabrookespams Did he seem a Little Gray To you In the movie
Actually it depends on what you are looking for. I read the book and watched the 2005 version all my life. It’s only this year (2023) that I discovered the 1971 version while waiting for the Wonka prequel movie to be released. And you know what? I wholeheartedly love the 1971 version and Gene Wilder’s Wonka despite only seeing it this year. I know Dahl disowned the 1971 movie but to me now, the warm and cosy 70’s version beats the 2005 version by a long shot despite not being all that faithful to the book.
Johnny Depp is my favorite!
Johnny Depp’s Wonka will always be the best to me. His Wonka, though slightly younger, was more to how Wonka was portrayed in the original book, with his naughtiness and wickedness. As was the rest of the movie.
Agree!
yes!
nothing, and i mean this, NOTHING will ever beat Wilder's portrayal. he brought everything to the role and created a character that has stood the test of time. he's the reason the original movie is my ultimate comfort film
You know what? I love the ranking.
1) Gene Wilder, 2) Timothée Chalamet & 3) Johnny Depp
Kinda Like the Spider-Man Actors
1) Tobey Maguire, 2) Tom Holland and 3) Andrew Garfield
Not even a competition. Gene Wilder is the MASTER.
Gene Wilder is the BEST WILY WONKA EVER!
I disagree. It’s Johnny Depp for me
I don't care about anyone or those who grew up watching the 1971 Willy Wonka. I'm 28 and I grew up loving Depp's Wonka.
For Roald Dahl, Johnny is his #1.
did you know Dahl personally? he would be turning in his grave
doubtful. Roald died 15 years BEFORE Depp's movie was released. I'm sure he would have found fault in it too.
Gene Wilder will always be Willy Wonka to me. He will never be beat. But Timothe Chalamet did a fantastic job with younger Wonka
Fun fact: The lyrics in the Oompa Loompa songs from the Tim Burton movie are adapted from paragraphs from the original book
Dang! Even ppl who don’t like the 2005 film can NOT deny its accuracy
Yup. Yet another reason why the Burton film is superior 😎
Wow ty was not aware
I love that! Thanks for the fun fact.
Grew up with Johnny depps version, still love it!
You haven’t recovered from the boat scene, have you? :D
@@pennyc7833 actually i didnt see that movie untill i was allmost 30. But i can imagine how it would have freaked me out if i had seen it as a kid.
@@DarkwolfRedsoul That’s kind of cool, actually. I can’t imagine what it’s like seeing it for the first time as an adult. Then again, I did see the Depp one as an adult and I was supremely unimpressed. Haven’t seen the other one at this point.
I agree! Although I always like to fast forward the boat scene
Leave Michael Jackson out of this. He never did anything to any kids.
I love johnny version of willie wonka the character is so strong and unique on his version
I love Johnny Depp as Wonka. I watched the 2005 version first so I’m biased but I don’t care. He was awesome as the character
It’s still hard to wrap my head around Johnny Depp’s Willy Wonka voice.
I know like how the HECK is that also Jack Sparrow?
Wonka is my one of my favorite movies of 2023
I haven't seen Chalamet, but Wilder is the only Wonka for me. He was the perfect combination of heart, humour, danger, unpredictability and eccentricity. He embodies Roald Dahl's writing perfectly- the dark and scary moral core of traditional fairy tales, but with satisfying accountability for the bad characters and a happy ending for the good ones.
You definitely chose the BEST Wonka, Gene Wilder still reigns supreme🙌🏽
I have heard that. I want to give the book a reread, but attire wise and his demeanor is closer to the book than Gene's is.@@EverSerpa29
Chalamet’s fan base has nothing to do with his portrayal of a young Wonka and that’s a terrible reason for not giving the movie a chance.
I probably will see the film eventually. The film was a smash financially, so It doesn't matter if I see it in the cinema. I just like the versions of Wonka I grew up watching. @@tracypvi
Agree with everything you said!! Great post.
@@theresahonsinger5853 Thank You ❤️
My favourite is Johnny
Right
Wilder is the best Wonka! Always will be.
Gene Wilder will always be my top favourite Willy Wonka. Great video
For me Johnny Depp remains the best. The version by Tim Burton remains my favourite.
Wilder, Chalamet then Depp for me. All had a good take on Wonka and each showcased brilliant acting skills.
The disrespect for Depp😭
Same here!
Gene Wilder is is the classic Wonka movie I love it so much
For me is Gene Wilder, Tomothee Chalament and far behind the other two Johnny Depp.
Gene Wilder hands down 🤷🏽♀️
Agree the original and the newest for the best wonka films
Wilder cam be the best. But imo, Dep is second
❤
Always going to be Wilder!!!
Johnny Depp is the best Wonka. No hard feelings to the other two. 2005 adaptation does the source material justice.
YES
PREACH!!!
'Cheer up Charlie' as a classic 🤣😂
Am I the only one who LOVES Cheer Up Charlie??
I always loved singing Cheer Up Charlie. For a young female performer, it was incredibly singable. I love when a movie has a lullaby.
The wonka soundtrack SLAPS and the og Willy wonka is just so magical
The Wonka movie songs are so catchy. 😂😂
No doubt about it! I really thought the music was going to break Wonka
I love Depp’s Wonka better than the original. In 2nd place, it’s the new Wonka.
Same
I like all of them why can’t we just appreciate all 3 I could watch all 3 anytime
Mr. Salt "You sure this thing will float Mr. Wonka?"
Wonka "with your buoyancy sir rest assured."
Boy was that an epic ass burn if there was ever was
My favorite will always be Johnny. His portrayal of Willie was awesome❤️
Sorry but not sorry I think Charlie and the chocolate factory is the superior version due to it's dedication to the source material that roald Dahl would of been proud of 😊
Gene Wilder IS Willy Wonka, he create the character, he gives it life on the screen and even if I was born in '93 he is 'my' Wonka and always will be
Candy Man: Chalamet
Humor: Wilder and Depp
Songs: Depp(I am not a musical guy. The songs are more unique in this version, and Cheer up Charlie in the original film is insufferable)
Sending a message: All 3
Pure Imagination: Depp
So, with a score of 2-4-2, Depp's version wins to me.
The music is by far the best & more catchy to listen to
YES!
Nostalgia aside, Johnny Depp nailed it, his acting in the movie gave that strange, weird and awkward vibe. OG is OG, but their will always be something which will be better than original.
Srry but Johnny Depp’s was the best. Especially the chocolate room and the story. It taught the importance of family and that success is earned through hard work
Chalamet has best songs, Depp is most like books, Wilder is the OG
Johnny and Timothee are my favorite portrayal of Wonka ❤
I know Dahl didn't like 1971 version, but Gene Wilder is and always will be the best Wonka!
He hates everything
Bro depp is the strangest and funniest and relatable wonka, gene wilder is also that but also creepy and only funny and strangest not relatable
Roald Dahl wrote him to be sort of creepy, and socially awkward. He’s SUPPOSED to be like that.
Too much.
@@Summerplayze I don’t find Depp as Wonka relatable at all.
@@marywatkins6798 I mean like a little bit but all I’m saying is I only grew up with depps version so that’s why
Maybe it is the nostalgia, because it was the version I grew up with, but for me Johnny Depp will be the best Wonka. I thought the other two were good, too, but as someone who has read the book, I feel like the Burton adaption is most fateful for the source material too.
yes it is the most fateful.
Mom and I were in an elevator once talking about the movies with Wilder and Depp, all of a sudden the only other person riding the elevator turned to us and agreed with us when we said that Gene Wilder was, and would always be the best Willy Wonka ever 🍫
It must be said that the smallness of a Chocolate shop compared to a factory is not even a complaint so yay!!!
I always knew Gene Wilder’s Willy Wonka would be the one that WON!
Wilder was a legend, first Wonka movie i saw was with Depp but i would like to see Chalamet's version
There will never be one as great as the original...in my opinion
No debate all three are awesome
My favorite Wonka is Timothée Chalament. I love the origin and his positivity
The woke Wonka 😬
Gene Wilder: most iconic
Johnny Depp: most accurate to the book
Timothée Chalamet: most charming/likable
Depp is by miles the best
True
Johnny Depp was alright as Wonka, but we could have done without the unnecessary backstory of his opposing dentist father. The original book and film didn't delve into Wonka's background, as the focus was on Charlie, and was arguably all the better for it.
Or maybe that dentist father backstory would've been better in Wonka movie since it's not focused on Charlie
As a GenXer, I definitely say Wilder is the best Wonka. I didn't like Johnny Depp's version. He was creepy without the warmth. I haven't seen Timothee Chalamet's version but from the clips, it feels like he has the tone right.
