- Barry Humphries interview on ROVE (live in the studio) with Rove McManus.
Internationally famous comedian, actor, writer and long-suffering manager of Dame Edna Everage, Barry Humphries has released a behind the scenes and candid account of her life and career in the book, 'Handling Edna'.
Barry Humphries is one of the funniest and most loved performers Australia has produced, capturing the hearts of millions of people around the world.
Hes achieved global success as a comedian, actor and writer - he is the author of several plays, books and two volumes of autobiography - AND is regarded as one of the country's best landscape artists!
Barry is most famous for his satirical characters, including Aussie bloke Barry McKenzie, grandfatherly Sandy Stone, stomach-turning Australian cultural attache Sir Les Patterson, and his most famous and enduring creation, Melbourne housewife superstar Dame Edna Everage.
So, its no surprise that as a youngster he spent hours dressing up and inventing his own characters, then while studying law, philosophy and fine arts at the University of Melbourne he began writing and performing in university revues. He went to London in his early 20s and became serious about acting and writing - penning a comic strip about the adventures of an Australian bloke called Barry McKenzie, which was made into a movie, also starring Mrs Edna Everage. Barrys reputation as an actor and writer has grown ever since.
Barry has just released the book Handling Edna a behind the scenes, candid and authoritative account of the life and career of Edna Everage superstar, swami, confidante and adviser to royalty, Hollywood (and Bollywood) stars, international political leaders, heads of state and various Popes.
From the days when she was a humble Moonee Ponds housewife to the stratospheric life she leads now, this exhaustively researched story of her roller-coaster career is told by the man who has been there from the very beginning Barry Humphries.

We need more Barry Humphries's in this world!
Bloody funny that the youngsters didn't know what a 'Passion play' was... that IS a sign of the times.
NO, Dame Edna is just pure original and out of this world. She is comparable to no other name.
Just read his autobiography from 1992 great read.
I adore Dame Edna and when I see her I am completely under her magic spell. I enjoyed seeing Barry Humphries but I don't care for the interviewer.
Yep, Rove is a dork.
This was so awkward at times, but good. He did steal the show, as usual!!
Every time I see him as himself I can't help but imagine Dam Edna. All the movements and the way he speaks..
I loved the don't forget bit at the end.
No way he is 75 in the video !
Vick’s vapor rub is awesome
I was a bit disappointed at Rove's interview style here, he just kept interrupting and kind of restless. Overall his attittude seemed a bit disrespectful. Was he was trying to be clever or just not that interested? It was a little embarrassing.
1970brenz Yeah they all treated the man like he was a joke or freak show. Some of the same actors on that stage has only found success by taking sub par or roles that protraryed them as outcasts!
Yeah this interviewer is pretty lame and clearly outclassed. Humphries is a world class comic genius.
Just outclassed. Thats all.
Hi, yes it was not the best interview. I usually think Rove is good and we could do with him coming back with another similar entertainment show. The panel were quite rude and I don’t think they realised just how lucky they were to be in Barrys presence. Peter Hellier whom we all love seems to be stuck to the chair. In 2023 I’m sure he would have been able to meet Barry’s humour with very funny quips. A former work colleague and I used to talk like him. We worked in a hospital and we’d say “here comes little Dr Gillespie in his little pin tripe suit and little white Sox’s”. So sad that we have lost Barry and his friends. It will never be the same. RIP Barry.
Roves a nobody compared to this man.
RIP 😢
@mrssleaze well put!
lol. that tantrum was a stunt lol.
@CT2507 I think Seth just seems bewildered. He probably senses that the guy is some kind of revered figure, but maybe has no idea exactly who he is, so is perhaps unsure how to behave, as is Rove, or the audience....
is there more to this video?
Why did he stoop so low as to appear on this little grommets show?
Rove ... where did he go?
His hole thing is being synical and acting like an old person. and people think its how he actually is, but its just another character like Dame Edna
Worse interviewer ever. He just wants to hear his voice
Hoopla!
In response to you're hate for Rove let me point this out - "Behind every mans success, there is a group of haters"
Especially in Australia.
His son makes GTA
I got such an awkward vibe from this interview.
I am not sure about Australia. But is Barry like American Stephen Colbert or Jon Stewart? :D
UNWATCHABLE!
Humphries shits from a GREAT height on the osscurity and utter mediocrity of the host and the guests...
Gutted I watched it.
whats with the awkward laugh in the beginning?
Fish are friends, not food
@ssotimp no i dont think so. u cant be in the actors community and not know Berry Humphrey. Berry Humphrey is pretty much a legend with his Dame Edna show.
i think Seth Green does not want to be dominated by Berry. doesnt want to be the underdog! it is pretty clear by his remark what he thinks of Berry Humphrey, that he steals the show and makes himself the center of attention.
i have seen it before. some people take Berry Humphrey as a personal challenge. get provoked by his style.
Peter Hellier showing some respect. Barry was being nice, Edna would have put them all in their place. Seth Rogan shows that he's a total prick.
i know this guy from being the voice of bruce in finding nemo.
Rove was also in it. He was the green crab who yelled this, "HE WENT TO THE FISHING GROUNDS!"
I think Barry rubs a lot of celebrities' egos up the wrong side, by sheer force of his personality.
Personally I love the guy and think his quick-witted humour is second to none, but I can see how desperate (with something to plug) might feel intimidated by someone with this much character.
That said, in this clip, I don't know if they are laughing with him or at him.
Nevertheless, Rove is a giant prick! A giant prick on an amoeba, I mean. It's all relative, size too!
Yeah it's called being down to earth!
@@australian6983 Is that so? Well, then, I guess your definition is the one we must all follow.
@@SpaceCatttttI'm saying Barry is down to earth and not an egotist like some others.
@@australian6983 Well, he's in the ground now. 😥
thats wqhat rove does and thats why its funny. im pretty sure idolises barry.
@wentchingirg yea, like in cherry.
lol. this is an interview? kinda onesided
actually.. subtle in an obviously ironic way.. err
let's just say.. satirical..
Rove ........EGO is a dirty word!!!!!
Seth Green seems condescending and snotty towards Barry Humphries in this interview.
Sorry, I had to.
first (:
Look at Seth Green nodding at the jokes as if they are serious comments - lame attempt at humour or does he not get that they are jokes? even after Barry's joke that people take jokes too seriously! Lol, I can't take Seth Green serious after his little Christian Bail tanty on set, who does he think he is? Batman? More like Boyman......
Ha ha ha ha.
Barry was drunk as hell!
Don't be silly boy.
Wow what was Rove going he was awful
You forgot how bad he is.
Damm, i used to like Rove!... ..what a wasted opportunity!..maybe he thinks he is an entertainer?..but really hes just one in a looong line of people whos interviews great people.
