4 Cylinder Turbo Pinto Sand Bagging Against a Mustang GT, C7 Z06 Corvette & Turbo LS 240 1/4 Mile

- Saw this 1972 Ford Pinto with a 2.3L 4 Cylinder Motor and a Turbo at Street Car Takeover, Martin Michigan, letting off around the 1/8th mile, and still giving a couple V8s a good run, including a Mustang, Turbo V8 240 and a C7 Corvette Z06
That's my car and I wanted to give a tremendous amount of thanks to whoever it is that did this video! I remember talking to you there but was busy with other stuff and didn't get to talk more. I've been trying to get someone with a good camera to shoot some video so I could watch my suspension and these were perfect! Thank you.
Awesome, thank you, glad it helped. Yeah I knew you were busy, and were only going to do partial passes; that being said, they were still a blast to watch, lining up with some pretty quick stuff!
That's a sick little ride Dave Flanders, I'm a huge Foxbody guy but this is just awesome and VERY fast! Love it bro!
Nice, you have the perfect bodied one for racing. I have a 72 Halfhatch…not as structurally strong as yours.
Great build and great driving
That's one badass pinto!!🍻🔥
That’s the way to safely own a Pinto, make it so fast that no one can rear end it.
LMFAO
Underrated comment
I had a 1980. I called it adventure driving.
lol lol lol lol cleaver
OUCH! lol literally
That first launch against the mustang completely caught me off guard..... absolutely amazing 👍👍🍺🍺
He damn sure took off like it had rocket propulsion attached somewhere!!
The launches are incredibly consistent. Nearly no slip. JUST WOW.
All the weight is on the rear. Small light engine in the front.
"All the weight is on the rear" is just a really idiotic thing to say, with absolutely ZERO accuracy to the statement.
@@gavinvalentino6002 Well..perhaps ...from an idiots point of view, but the Pinto has a very good weight distribution. The driver is slightly rearward of the center of the car, if he has installed a racing seat its probably even back further than stock. The back seat pretty much sits on the rear axle. At launch even more weight bares down right on those rear tires adding bite.
@@gavinvalentino6002 If you want to be anal and take it totally literally, then yes. Otherwise chill FFS.. all he means is there is a lot or rearward weight bias.
@@matrox,
You're right. This 'Gavin's' kind of a dick too.
When those front tires lift up at launch, quite literally "all of the weight" is balanced on the back tires of this Pinto. How could this guy be so fuckin 180° wrong about this!? What a bonehead comment he made huh!? Lmao!
Nice to see a tiny old Ford give a Z06 a run for it's money. Hooks up and jumps out of the hole like a scalded cat !
Totally holeshots the Vette. If you would have told me my sister's first car was capable of this kind of performance... I would have said you should have your head examined . What a World
It's faster than the vette. He was holding back to stay over 10.
@@wigletron2846 Actually technically speaking the little Pinto is much quicker than the Vette. The Vette still has a far superior top speed. Drag racing has much more to do do with the quickness of movement forward from the starting line. The Pinto's weight break is greater than Vette's horsepower advantage. It's all about the power to weight ratio. Bless you
@Wigletron
You put the driver of The Pinto in the The Vett if you really want to see its potential.
This driver has skills
👏
@@stevenroth5424 Don't miss the point. It's well known Guys who drive Vette's have teencie little wieners. I'd rather drive a 9 second pinto 4 cylinder.
I had a 1971 Pinto in 1975. It was my first car. My brother and I competed in everything from bicycles to cars. My poor little Pinto received a cam, headerrs, DP distributor, cold air intake, traction bars and of course some wheels. My car had the 2000 cc engine which was a beast. It was such a sleeper I have raced several cars with V-8's and buried them. The lightweight car would leap off of the line like you see in this video and everyone was trying to catch up all the way. I called it the "Mean Pinto Bean"!
I’m jealous I’d love to have one of these pintos, so cool!
the 2,000 were better than the 2,300 c.c.
My first cam shaft and T. Belt @15 years old 1972 pinto runabout 🔧🔧🔧🔧👍🇺🇸
Had a friend back in the day that had a pinto wagon drag car 302 car called it pinto beans.
@@frez777 Exactly...they screamed.
Wow this Pinto is no joke! This is a very well built car with the right components, he's getting 10s consistently, run after run. This guy nailed it!
Holy ……..not only was this thing fast but the dude behind the wheel was outstanding 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I'm a Toyota guy, but DAMN! I could be a 2.3 liter Ford guy in a moment. The suspension set up on the Mighty Pinto is PERFECT! Dialed in perfectly!
Toyota guy as well. I'd still take a 2JZ or a 18R-G etc etc.
It's that power to weight ratio that's the overlooked equsion.
I've personally witnessed a 1955 Volkswagen bug stomp a big block barracuda back in the day.
In the history of illegal street racing in Hawaii...this one guy had a few Volkswagens that would outrun big blocks all the time.
Acquired a few cars when people use to race for papers.
The guy was a legend.

Hey I was both. 1973 pinto 1975 pinto 1979 Toyota Celica GT 1984 Celica GTS.
The 2.3 turbo ford is one of the most under rated engines out there.
I have a friend that had a 2.3 NA in a Mustang II way back when. It was slow, but we had fun revving the bejeebers out of it every chance we got. The tach didn't have a redline on it, so we assumed we could rev it to infinity and beyond. Never did blow it up.
Love your pinto, what are you using for transmission and rear gears and rear tires ? I am redoing my 1948 Thames Panel that I have a early 2.3 Pinto engine with a blower and C4 Trans. 9 inch rear with 3.90 gears . Would like to do some drag racing. Any advice. Thanks keep video coming.
ROFLMFAO!!!
Don't forget a 300 in line ford is legendary engine also I'm a Chevy fan but deep down always enjoyed in line ford engines
Is that the same engine used in ford capris the european ford
amazing that this Pinto with a 2.3 litre Turbo beat a mustang and a Corvette,I give thumbs up to the person who put this car together,I use to have a pinto back in my days but could never figure out how to install one on a Pinto.
doesn't surprise me one bit, my Bobcat(Mercuries pinto version) had the 2300 engine and it was fast for stock
@@expfighter5112 I loved those pintos great when raining get going about 60 pull up on the emergency brake and do a 360 or 2 😂😆
Now go take that pinto out on a date lol.
@@billybritt5334 🐂💩
Definitely sandbagging if he's popping off consistent 10's coming off the line that hard! A 100% perfect build that's not just another ls swap. Thank you for staying out of the norm, sir. 👏👏👏👏
I thought I had the speed setting turned up when I saw the launch but I didn't....I wonder what the 60' time is.
It's likely not sandbagging, but probably is bracket racing. You get set in a bracket (of times) and you can't "break out" if you do, you're out.
It's stupid, I've never bracket raced, I only do all out.
Can you explain what “10” means here?
@Joe Dellinger the time it set I. Qualifying was 10 seconds . He now can go no faster in the quarter mile than 10 seconds or he loses.
Buddy Ingersoll had his Pinto Turbo car running Pro Stock et's in 80's. He'd reset class record near weekly and raise the index. I asked him why he didn't sandbag to maintain his advantage and was told the means didn't exist (like now) and had to keep the pedal pinned. NHRA redid turbo classes rules , making him non competitive for Comp Eliminator and he was gone
He started with a Pinto . Later bought a Warren Johnson Olds he put a Buick regal nose on. Actually did race in IHRA Pro Stock losing to Bob Glidden in a final. Buddy went to Happy Hunt Drag Strip 2012
I thought Buddy Ingersoll had a Buick Skyhawk Turbo V6.
that pinto is a work of art looks killer off the line, buddy ingersoll would be very proud, dave flanders very nice car.
The Ford 2.3 is no joke with the right parts those 4 cylinders will kick ass!!
Bringing back memories of the late 80’s/early 90’s with Turbo Joe.
That thing is fast!!! Super fun watching it launch off the line.
Damn! That's the quickest street looking car I've ever seen. Changes my whole outlook on these Pintos and 4cyls. That's impressive
Holy krap!
I miss my 71 Pinto with the lowly 1600 push rod 4 wacker and 4 speed. I had a speed shop modify it and had long tube headers installed. It wasn't anywhere near as fast as this guy but would hold it's own against baby Porshes (914s) in the straight and through the corners. I traded it in for a new pickup after I got married. Guys, stay single as long as you can!
Lol, unexpected wins and sleepers never get old
@@DragRacingandCarStuff 1500 MPG model with a 2300 wagon engine dropped in was fun. wider tires+rims, KYB's, twisty little coast roads...
That’s my buddy Dave Flanders. He was using that as shakedown on a fresh combo,
Pintos are getting to be more popular and videos like this are why.
That is a sweet Pinto.
That kids is why people are still racing Pintos. Fantastic little cars, I have owned many. 58 now and my forever Pinto is sitting in the shop, a very minty 71, bright lime with black interior car, 2.0 4 speed. Hail Pintos!
Very impressive car wow. I’ve always wanted a Cleveland pinto but you got me scratching my head now. Thanks.
I have to say that pinto surprised the heck out of me with the way it launches . I didn't look into it more yet , but that car must have really steep gears .
You and me both
4.10 gears and believe it or not 2970 lbs w/driver. New tires really help!
@@daveflanders5223 Thanks Dave that's quite the rocket ship , very cool . That car seems to have all the traction that it needs thanks .
@@jackfishcampbell6745 "All the traction it needs". Doesn't that mean it needs MOAR POWER?!
@@robeddy3722 Well it surprised the heck out of me as is but sure why the heck not !
This takes me back to the fun days of 2.3T-powered Pintos, Turbo Coupes, and Mustang SVOs. These engines were so much more fun than the V8s of the time!
They were when you tied the waste gates shut..
That’s amazing. And I will say that that is the best looking Pinto I’ve ever seen. The Pinto body, has aged surprisingly well.
I remember driving a Pinto down Highway 1, from Palo Alto to Santa Cruz back in the day when the car was only about two years old. It was a slug, orange body color, with the hound’s tooth cloth interior, and vinyl top… a complete embarrassment, thank God it wasn’t mine.
I owned a mint 1968 Plymouth GTX 440. Still, I’ll never forget my first drive south on Highway one when I was a teenager from the Midwest.
Used to argue with my father about "no replacement for displacement"... Thanks for reminding me of the good ole days
That Pinto was on a mission!
When I was a young man it was said the 2300 wasn’t the engine of choice. The 2000 had an one one more main and had a stronger bottom end. You have put that theory to bed. Well done. I too had a Pinto and enjoyed it. Did put a 2000 in a 48 Willys Jeep. Loved it.
Back in the late 70's early 80's I raced a 2000cc dirt track pinto. We were pushing 300HP running a 500 Holley ,cam. headers and a ton of hand porting on the head and intake. lots of poor boy experimental engine work. Those engines were nearly indestructible I wonder what could be done like this guy is doing to the 2300. A 2300 couldn't touch me .
This Pinto is badass, I don’t care how many cylinders it has. It looks and sounds great, suspensions is obviously hooks up on launch.
One of the BADDEST 4 cylinders 👹👊🏻 💥 🔪
@@fra93ilgrande I haven’t seen one better!! The way he shot out like he had a Saturn5 rocket booster on the back!! And it looks badass with the big & littles!!

Great combination you've worked out there. Ludicrous launch.
My Indian name is Man With Three Pintos. (owned three of them) Naturally this is so inspiring!
I sure wasn't expecting such a takeoff. Looks like he was shot out of a barrel!!!!! VERY impressive!
I see the 2.3 all the time for industrial use, generators mainly.
Great engines.
And a buddy's 87 turbo coupe was eye opening back in the day.
so easy to pump up as a solid little N/A engine too.
@@modelnutty6503 for sure.
Heh, my buddies turbo coupe , we made it to the county fair that year in 22 minutes,it's normally 45.
We spent almost 15 minutes in top gear and the revs never went under 5500.
Slow down to 80, it was so boring you wanted to get out and walk 🤣
I have owned four Pintos, and your's is very clean and simple.
Better than people think 👹👊🏻 💥 🔝
That Pinto is a rocket 🚀 out of the hole....hooks up so good! Super fast and fun to watch! Thanks... great car!
Eric Underwood Class of 81 Downey High school CA ✌️
That Pinto looks like it was shot out of gun at the starting line. Great launches!
I built the 2.3 in my '93 Ranger XL.
Went from 97 hp to 435 hp and 410 lb/ft tq. I use it as a stoplight sleeper. It looks completely stock, other than the 17" 2003 Mustang Cobra mags I put on it. Trying to run it on the 14" tires was not happening.
Edit: I'm in my mid 40's and I have a V-8 in almost all of my vehicles, and they range from 1938 to 1993, and that 2.3 was the cheapest and easiest build I've ever done.
Run a compound setup with a cabin adjustable wastegate... 30mpg or more but 450hp(ish) at your fingertips.
My oldest sister had a '72 Pinto that she actually special ordered but her's didn't have the braided lines or look anything like this one here.
I never found anyone else other than my sister, in all my travels to this very moment, that special ordered a Ford Pinto!
I got real good at changing out the starter solenoid which always went bad.
Our father was happy when she finally got rid of it!
Back in 1982, I bought a 1971 Pinto that had a 1600 English engine in it, the same engine that powers formula Ford SCCA. It was a California car, no rust, so fun!
That pinto was a bullet on the first run, incredible pinto.
That's one impressive little buggy. Hats off to those that built it. I can only imagine what they could do to an 8cyl
My guess is they'd go slower with the added weight. But I'm probably wrong.
and there would have to have a ton of work done to the engine compartment because it was way too small both length wise and width wise. if you wanted the V8 to fit inside the engine compartment you needed to cut the dog house around the bell housing out. I remember seeing one without a grill so as to make room for the radiator.
unlike a Vega where everything fits under the hood yes you needed to hammer the dog house out a little bite but no cutting required unless you wanted to install a big block engine. Had fun in the 70's with those little cars
Growing up in the 70's watching my father race his Plymouth I always loved Pintos. I still have my Pinto Hot Wheel :)
I had a orange pinto wagon in the early 80's with a small block Chevy 350/350..no frame reinforcements no beefy differential.Just pure Micky mouse backyard engineering...it was all smiles and grins until the doors wouldn't open/close no more and the frame rails peeled off the floor/firewall and car basically broke in half.. LoL.. wouldn't change it for the world...wish I could re live those days...
It's crazy what you can do with a 4 cylinder nowadays
It's called power to weight ratio.
Yay I know but it's only half a v8 and some 4 cylinders can put a woopin on a some v8s
@@tg2963 Chevy is now putting a 2.7 liter 4 banger in their 1/2 ton trucks in lieu of the 4.8 v8 which they used for years as well as the 5.3. The new 2.7 High Output is turbo charged and is putting out over 300 hp and 400 foot pounds of torque. Better HP than the 4.8 and better torque than the 5.3. Our company just bought the first one of these this week. Has a bit of turbo lag on take off compared to a v8 but still snippy after launch, haven't pulled a load with it yet and also interested to see if it will be a 250K engine.
They been doing it for a long time. there was a HOT ROD magazine. that had an article in it called 1000 HP for 1000 hours. where they built a 2300 2.3 L Pinto engine they balanced the rotating assembly and used forged Pistons put a cross flow D port head on it, with a high lift Long duration cam. and used a mechanical fuel injection from a Mercedes Benz and fabricated on to it and a turbo charger and ran it on the Dyno at 1000 HP for 1000 hours it was the cover article in the magazine. I believe that was in the late seventies, or early eighties. you could probably research it though HOT ROD Magazine
and where Is live there are guys that build these engines. to use on the local NASCAR sanctioned circle track. they only allowed to do certain things to them per NASCAR rules. they can do light m machine work, they can use the D port head, they can raise the compression ratio. they can use an intake manifold with it certain part number. and a certain camshaft. and a 500 CFM Holley carburetor and a header. and they can get 300 HP out of them they are unbeatable on that track. and they have been doing this for quite a years. the 2300 2.3L Pinto engine is a hell of an engine. they are durable and make really good HP. they are one of the best four cylinder engines ever produced.
@@anthonyrichard461 They typically gas guzzle worse than V 8s when they tow. Or carry loads. Your almost always better with a V 8 for hard work. The only better engine is diesel. But who knows they might eventually work that out.
Holy crap. I've never seen a car come out of the hole like that!
That's how to show a race video. Well done!
Back in '78 I had a friend that rented a storage space and turned a blue pinto with a 351 into a eighth mile demon.
I had a '69 340 Dart with 456 gears but still couldn't keep up.
I wish Ford would just come out with a resto Pinto and I think it would sell like crazy.
Had one, and I was constantly accused of having a 302 under the hood..
Can't go wrong with a sleeper. They are sick.
Yeah a tubbed out, caged sleeper... If you know the bare minimum about cars, sleeper is the opposite reaction.
@Nick Simmons A pinto is a sleeper period... no one expects a pinto to be lining up, only thing one up it is a mini van.
Back in the early 90s a buddy of mine had a 84 Ford Svo he had it in the 12s and that was fast back then for a 2.3. Still my favorite car. I liked it so much I went out and bought a 87 thunderbird turbo couple with the same 2.3 in it. Your pinto is amazing

Loved seeing that Pinto do amazing things on the strip!!! I had a Pinto (well, Mom's) during high school. Pintos are quite aerodynamic, Folks! :-)
When I was a kid my dad had a green '73 Pinto with a 4 speed. He loved that stupid car so I sent him this video!
That thing leaves the line hard.
The best part of a race is seeing your opponent in your rearview mirror! thanks for a good video
I used to think the Pinto was disgusting in the 1980s, but it's actually better looking than the new Mustang.
I used to have a pos primer black 1986 4x4 ranger with a 2.2. I decided to hop it up after I discovered Eslinger engineering and their parts. Had a massive cam and full port job. 12.5 to 1 pistons with an Eslinger intake and 500 holley. Hooker super comp header. It sucked in the winter. But in summer it could smoke a Porch boxer like nothing. Even took a zo6 back in 2001. It was really fun and really loud!!
Mt dad orded a new pinto back in spring of 1970 . He wanted one just like what was on the picture that the Ford Dealer showed him what the new coming up Pinto was going to look like . The picture was a Ford engineer rendering of the new Pinto . My dad got it in late 1970 as a 1971 . The dealer may have wrote up and orded it in late 1970 and arrived in 1971 . It was exactly like the one on the front cover inside and out . with the 1.6 engine and the 4 speed trans . GOD I wish I had that car . I loved it what I was 12 years old . The following year I left home for good . Never returned . I was so tired dad beating me .
When I was 16, my dream car project was
gonna be a Pinto with either a 260, or a 289 CUI with a tunnel ram manifold
50 rear tires with rear wheel flares to keep the tires underneath . Now that I'm 60,
My dream car today is a AMT 1/25 Scale
Plastic model of a Pinto.

My mom had one of those when i was a kid in the early 80s. Was 2-tone blue. Can't believe that's the same vehicle. Remember getting stuck and being towed like twice while i played w GI Joes.
Absolutely excellent! This is how speed is done. Can you say "Built! NOT Bought!"?
Every run brought another smile.
Only thing better would have been cameras on the faces of the other drivers 🙈😂😂
I had 1971 Pinto ,,had it painted Dewitt type orange, white side pipes,, went to stock car races with it and watched my favorite driver, Richie Evans. RIP Rapid Roman
Those 2.3L Fords are Legend in off-road and powerboats. No surprise here this is happening. Had one in an 1984 Thunderbird TC. That was the most powerful 145hp I've ever felt. I use to run side by side with V-8 Camaros through the gears in it.
My brother in law had a pinto wagon that he modified slightly and no one took him serious. (This was 40 years ago). In his case he did rolling starts against other cars. At 20 mph he owned 80% of all opponents. This video brings back memories
Wow... and staying true to its heritage with the 2.3.... Not since the classic viral video of the old Fiat 600 spanking that Porsche have I grinned so hard at a drag race....
I LOVE THIS!!
Makes me proud seeing this from a former 1974 Pinto in 1982 I had !0 inch wide back tires airshocks and thin tires up front.
When I was 18, my dad had a pinto with a 357 Cleveland, it had wheelie bars. He would never let me drive it. Begged him, told him he could be in the car with me, never would let me.
This is the first car I can actively recollect in life. My mother had one of these things. It was a Orange Pinto that never seemed to give her any act right. This obviously is a far cry from that. Never seen this breed of Pony move so swiftly. Cool build and for me, out of the ordinary.

Glad to see its still a Ford motor! My late dad had a 72 Pinto that made it over a MILLION miles, with only 2 engine rebuilds. My 1st car was a 73 Pinto, that i got for $75 in 1997👍🏻😎👍🏻
I had a pinto like that, 71, built up turbo 4 from an svo turbo t-bird! Hell yeah!!!
My first car was a 1971 Pinto. Bought it for $900 in '75, at age 17. It was no dragster, for sure, but it got me and my buddies to school and around town. Nice to see what can be done with one.
I was born in 75...so cool!
That's Bad Ass..!!!!!! glad to see your still at it Dave !!!
Owned a 78 Pinto with a turbo charged four banger (2.3L). I've had it up to 180 mph, so I have no trouble believing this because mine wasn't nearly as tricked out as this one. It was white with blue flames and got me a lot of teasing, until it left almost everything in the dust. Then it got me a lot of respect. 😂🤣
Lot's of respect for the 2.3 , look up the history of the Ford S.V.O. Special Vehicle Operations Turbo Mustang , & how they put some factory vehicles on the trailer during their debut !! Everyone laughed at them when they said they wanted to go head to head with Porsche & Ferrari because it was only a 4 banger , they shut the exotic displacement snobs up quick when they got on the track !! I've road raced 2 of them and they will boogie down when that turbo spools up & hug a corner like nothing else !! 😉👍
Wow!!! That 72' Pinto was UNBELIEVABLE!!! 😉
I thought this was going to be Clickbait but I am blown away that is an amazing Pinto!

The Pinto lanch is increadible . I remember back in the day there was a Pinto drag car called Pinto Beans . It had a 2000cc four in it and it would eat big blocks all day long .
Overlooked, but those Pinto's with the 2.3 are prime drag cars, they were built light, can be lightened more, and they're just a fun land-rocket that will take you faster per $ than most other cars... if you can find one.
Big Kudos to whomever dialed in the suspension. Beautifully done.
I've owned 2 pintos, one stock and one with a 302- great cars. I don't care what anybody says, Ford pintos rock...
Turbo Man!!! I remember the 2.3 powered notchback with the No V8s sticker way back in the early 2000s. man that thing pulled some nice power wheelies!! Also enjoyed the ride that day out at Baker, before you hit the dyno.
I'm impressed
Them little car usually don't say P O W E R but that Pinto lives up to the moniker
I took a 2018 2.3 liter mustang and lightened it - considerably - swapped out the snail for a much larger one, made sure the block was reinforced etc. ended up dropping over 360 pounds! Making 512 whp. I left the rest alone, just added some skinnies up front and some drag tires out back, and had a blast. - That 10spd, say what ya want, but I could dial it in all day at 12.07 secs and take home trophies lol... pissed so many people off with it but had the best time. The cost wasn't nearly as bad as I'd thought it would be, either. - LOVE the old Pinto/Vega drag beasts. I may be 60 but a speed freak I'll always be lol. - THX for the comments and I'm sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings! What's that ? ANOTHER trophy? lol I'll take that!
I had a 86 thunderbird turbo coupe loved it bored 30 over 330 horse power before the turbo ran 12lbs with boost controller could boost 25 psi loved this car finaly blew the bottom out of it
Froggy little pinto! Who would have ever thought that it would make it to the track! I had one same vintage, had 1bbl carb on an english ford. 98 cubic inch tower of power.
My first thought was Turbo Joe Morgan's Pinto that I read about in the 90s. Damn I wish I had play money. Nice ride Dave Flanders!
