"Hey, Robert, what do you say you and I go out and have a few cocktails." "You mean you want to go drinking in the middle of the week without a job?" "Well, that’s when you need a drink the most."
The actor who played the father did such a superb job! He really took on the role like a hand in a glove, as if he were just playing himself. I love the way he snaps "HOW?" in a harsh whisper. The whole scene's hilarious.

This is brilliant. My ex RAF high ranking officer dickhead stepdad is like this the very, VERY few times I have bothered to visit my parents. Doesn't say hello, hates my guts, and all he wants to know is if I have a job and tells me I can't just 'sit around watching tv all day' if i even stay one night. Last time I threatened to break his face as he wouldn't stop picking holes in my life and Ive never been back in over 11 years. My mum and I have a non existent relationship as she lets him alienate her from me. Thanks for reading my sob story lol. This movie rules. Go all the way!
My stepdad is the same way, to be honest deep down he's a good man but he's so old school that he still thinks twenty five cents gets you a pack of smokes. Ok maybe not that bad but he's way behind the times lol
Doug Fisher I think, at that point, henry didn't feel like he was his son any more. He is such a disappointment in his father's eyes, there wasn't much he could say.
Doug Fisher He calls him dad when he sits down. I believe he called him by his first name when he realizes things aren't going to work out at home like he planned.
Then try to fulfill your little dreams. Fuck them cunts. I always thought, neither bloodline or country of origin is basis for any relationship whatsoever. Good Luck!

Have to give thanks to Buk's father for being almost entirely responsible for an extraordinary body of writing from a unique human being. That being said, i hope he went to hell.
I keep coming back to this clip every now and then, especially after drinking after another day of meaningless work. I read through the comments and know that my life is a mirror image of thousands of others. We hurt, we drink and then we laugh.
you have to cherish both in their own ways. barfly is more of an entertaining comedy with bits of crushing truth mixed in. this movie is more balanced and more of a down to earth portayal
After having listened to all the Audiobooks, and having seen every single interview or documentary about him, having listened to the poetry from the readings and what not, I still feel there is something very essential missing from every depiction of him. I am very thankful for the adaptations, but there is something very important missing. That report on the consummation of himself. And much more none of us will really know. I'm hoping when ham on rye will one day be made into a movie, they don't miss a single thing. But great work. There was a lot more in the book i wished was shown.
I think the best...worst abusive parent scene is from Natural Born Killers....That canned laughter, with the sit-com ethos. It encapsulates family abuse like no other. This was an armature attempt at the same. Kiddy land...Go watch that scene with Rodney Dangerfield. Anyone that has been through real abuse will poo poo this scene and put Oliver on top for creating one sick scene.

@@russellpaloor5125 Well Buk was called Charles Heinrich (Henry in english). So people did call him Hank from Henry from Heinrich. So In a way it is his real name as much as Charles

"You mean you want to go drinking in the middle of the week without a job?"

Bukowski said this? Nice.
In the book it’s supposed to be after he gets arrested for public intoxication that he needs a drink the most lol
😂😂
Jesus, I dont know what's sadder his dad or how tough that piece of meat is.
Lol at his right hand stabbing into it trying to cut it hahahaha.
Bukowski wished he was this good looking
Lmao I love Bukowski, he looks like that goblin Hoggle from the movie Labyrinth hahahaha.
No shit.
Best photo I have seen of him is a closeup on a boat in a wool cap. He looked like a sailor, handsome, rugged, and weary.
He wrote down pretty much all of his wishes...that wasn't one of them.
In this scene you see Henry’s face looking kinda red,I guess that’s a nod to Charles and his acne which made him look like a freak
I love the look of dread, when she says "your fathers home".
Movies never get it right, but this one is pretty good . The book is so completely superb

Rayme Michaels As much as I like Dillon I felt the father made this scene.

Great scene from a great FILM! Hugely underated!🤥🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺
This was a better, more earnest version than the Rourke one.
But Bukowski himself wrote the script for Barfly.
Best movie on Bukowski in my opinion. Dillon did a great job.
This is s really good film & excellent performance by Matt Dillion. Its how I learned about Charles Bukowski
I love how he calls his dad by his first name. I got a prick dad like that, it just be awkward calling him dad.

The great Chinaski!
My parents took away my dignity, in their own little ways because, I eventually quit, I gave up on pursuing my dreams.
is this a quote from Bukowski?

Room and board. Plus laundry!
The guy who played his dad wasnt much of a method actor. He was eating his food left handed. Chinaskis dad disagreed with lefthandedness.
I’m right handed and I eat that way
You did better way better than your parents
In the book Henry’s dad wasn’t home yet.
3 of my Top 10 movies are starring Matt - Factotum, Rumble Fish and The House That Jack Built. Should have said "Yes, father, I murdered somebody"
Outsiders.

Great scene but where are his parents German accents?
I'm thinking since they placed the film in present day instead of the 40s when the book took place, there wasn't a need for it
I think his mother was German, but his father was an american soldier who met her over in germany and brought her back when bukowski was only 3
His father was born in America
like it matters.

at least get the guy's name right...It's Matt Dillon
it's Henry fucking chinasky, i don't care if it has been 7 years. errors will allways come to bite you in the ass, so, get the character name right.

What a cookie cutter scene. Zero authenticity from his dads disappointment with his drunk writer scene

A movie with little to no tone. The book is a lot better than this.
