One of my FAVORITE woodburning tutorials. I love how youre really keeping most of it in realtime to give us an in-depth perspective on how this actually works. I hate it when people cut out those vital pieces forcing us to figure it out on our own through trial and error, ultimately defeating the purpose of the tutorial. Love the anime picture you chose. You're really one of the first anime woodburners Ive ever had the pleasure of seeing on youtube. Thank you for posting this. Personally, this tutorial really helped me alot. ☺👍👏😌
Glad you liked it. Wood burning has a really steep learning curve even if you are a good artist. Mostly because if you mess out there is very little you can do to fix it. Thanks for watching hopefully I'll have more coming on this subject.
I know this was 3 years ago, I wanted to tell you something. Excellent job. Don't down play how hard it is. If someone thinks they can do it because it's easy, then they can do a video. It's hard work, you have to be talented and have a good eye for comp.
I was browsing through pyrography tutorials and got to yours, saw Erza and thought to myself, "Yep, this is the guy I want to learn from." Anime geek solidarity!!! *bro fist*
Awesome work man. Really great stuff. This is the first tutorial that has helped me in what I want to do this for. I'd like to customize some ax and hatchet handles and some wooden knife scales with pyrography. It's proving to be difficult since none of those are flat surfaces, but the methods used in this video I think will help a great deal. Thank you sir.
Great job, I really learned a lot, to heck with who thinks it is just tracing. Tracing requires a steady hand, but you managed to create 3 dimensional effects.
I do woodburning also and I Love it I've been doing it for about 4 yrs now and I learned it from a friend of mine but I would like to learn more any tips are welcome.
I am fixing to burn my first piece. I am doing the cowboy and his horse kneeling at the cross.. Needed some pointers and your video was great Thank you
Sycamore is a good one to use and is relatively soft so you can run the pen at a colder temperature and get the same effect as a hot pen on cheaper woods. The one consequence is because the pen is running colder, each blade/wire will last a bit longer. Dark wood, although yes it can be difficult to burn and see the results can provide an atmospheric effect to certain pictures. Although I will say, I have been doing pyrography (proffesionally ?) for 5 years and I still have so much to learn.
Great work!I noticed you said "how it's sometimes hard to do the eyes with the tool sometimes with the curves". As an artist with just drawing and interested in pyrography. If you just keep the paper stationary in one position it's hard to get the curves of any line just in drawing. The same applies to any canvas. It helps to move the wood to get the curves and lines you want to achieve. If you are trying to keep the canvas stationary for camera view then move your body, your curved lines will come out smoother and more natural... I am sure you know this but it's a nice tip for beginners in any art form. Hope it helps. Thanks for a great tutorial by the way!
DeadlyDemeiter Actually the eyes are much easier to do with a different type of tip/pen. 😆 It is easier not using a craft/hobby burner like the one in the video. I recommend nibsburner, burnmaster eagle, and razor tip. Granted these are a worthy investment if you continue to burn. I love all three of mine and I have had my nibsburner for 10 years.
YAY ERZA!!I am planning on doing something like this for my book chat. I was thinking of burning the Fairy Tail symbol (doing Fairy Tail for book chat) and this Erza tho... so majestic
+Hatsune Miku Go for it. It is not as hard as it looks taking your time is the biggest part. Let me know if you want to see a different anime character burned (Or anything for that matter) always glad to help. Good luck on your project.
Great tutorial and very help full. I appreciate that you take the time to explain what you are doing and how it should be done. I learn't allot from just watching the way you work the tool. Thank's
thank you for this video it really helps and I really enjoyed watching you do it and this is my first time watching you and I thought you were great and I give you a great big👍👍👍👍👍 I hope you have a good one ❤😊
Outstanding & well done, can i ask what about bas-wood i believe that is its name where you are & where i am we call it Lime wood, can that be burnt well because i did a carving of a heart bowl for my sons girlfriend & she wants initials on it this is why i watched your entertaining video thank you.
Its funny that you picked Erza , because if you think about Fairy Tale it's all about comrades and comradery and here you are sharing your knowledge I think that's pretty kool . WWG1WGA!
I'm new at wood burning i was wondering what kind of paper you are tracing that onto the wood i such at free handing i love your video's just subscribed thanks for sharing
Also I find Basswood to be the best to burn on. I don't think you mentioned that wood. It's super light, even toned, smooth and soft. Makes for the best pieces:) Also if purchasing wood you can get some gorgeous pieces with a natural bark border.
I didn't mention it only because I have never burned any of it. I have heard that it does really well, but I didn't want to say something I have never tried.
Hi, this is lovely. I am attempting my first project which is a walking stick for my grandson. Please tell me which tip you used for the outline. Thanks
In my humble opinion, artists create. If that means tracing another's work so u can do embossing techniques, or hammer tiny nails 2 do string art or burn wood that includes color, shading, light effect, etc... Then so be it. Don't let anyone tell u that did not create a beautiful burning effect on this piece cuz it'd b a lie! Thank u 4 the advice & suggestions. 💞
Timothy Nevins go to lowes and buy a 1X6 piece of popular it will come in a 8ft piece. It will be better than anything you've tried. Most hobby shops don't have what you really need. Good luck it is a lot of fun.
Hey great tutorial. I love it. It teaches you how to Woodburn with ease. Just one question. Which tip do you usually use or recommend for these specific pictures?
+ZerlaZer#$# It is really what you prefer because everyone is different. I use a chisel tip with a 30 degree rake. (Must wood burning tools come with them.)
Im a Hopi who makes kachina dolls and wood burning is part of the process. I also make Christmas ornaments cut out by hand with a coping saw. They depict various animals and Hopi clan symbols. I am an advanced wood burner who is always striving to better my work. Saw one of your videos and thought it was pretty good. I have a question. When depicting animals what methods do you find helpful when burning realistic fur?
OK. I've already begun to use a few of the techniques I observed u using. I had no idea you could use different tips. I only use 1 tip. Check out my work at Quavehema's Fine Arts on Facebook. I'llppost what I did today. Thank you
Thank you for the video! You have a very relaxed communication style. I am having trouble burning pine, but I am wondering if some types of thin plywood from Home Depot would work if they don't have any knots. Do you recommend that?
+Blehdi Thanks. Plywood burns ok, but the glue that is used makes a really bad smell. I would think that is not good to breathe either. I like solid wood better.
+Michael Kotapish I've never burned bamboo before. I've worked with it, and it is very similar to wood, so I would say that it acts like wood. I do know there is a good bit of oil in bamboo, so that may hurt you a little on finishing the piece. If you have a scrap piece try it on it first, and see if you like it. Other than that I'm sure it will burn just fine.
You might like to give mineral spirits and pencils a try. Pencils alone wouldn't look good but try first doing a little shading to fill in spaces, then go over the pencil with mineral spirits. It gives it a really pretty paint looking effect.

CJ Partridge Be sure you don't have a fan blowing on you or the tool. It will kill your heat. It is uncomfortable, but it works much better. Yes presser helps but be sure your not going to fast.
hey, I've just subscribed to you. I was wondering... Are there a lot of pencil marks left over after you finish burning? For example, do you have to go over it with an eraser? If you want to be perfect? thank you.

If you add any kind of stain (even if it is lighter than the wood your using) it will make it darker. Look at it like paint. You start with white, and if you add anything it will make it darker no matter what.
Well what type of finish you pick has a LOT to do with what the outcome will look like. I've got a video on that to help with what to do. ua-cam.com/video/y8Tei3-MuG0/v-deo.html
i think i need to see about the Colwood, i have just had the peter child given to me, but you have to make your own nibs which i do not like, prefer ready made.. When i see others online with a cheap models, they make it look easy with no problems. Thanks for the reply

I’ve watched so many videos trying to find something that really helped me understand better with the burner I have. Thank you!
Hell yeah, I was already hooked but then he hits us with "Animation" this is fantastic!
Couldn't decide if I wanted to watch fairy tail or watch art videos tonight, guess I have the best of both worlds! Nice work!
Haha funny how that works out.
I know this was 3 years ago, I wanted to tell you something. Excellent job. Don't down play how hard it is. If someone thinks they can do it because it's easy, then they can do a video. It's hard work, you have to be talented and have a good eye for comp.
This is, hands down, one of the coolest things I've ever seen in my life! Thank you for taking the time to show us how you woodburn. :)
Angry Pariah wow glad you liked it.
Angry Pariah ; then you need to get out more😂
I was browsing through pyrography tutorials and got to yours, saw Erza and thought to myself, "Yep, this is the guy I want to learn from." Anime geek solidarity!!! *bro fist*
Bro fist back.
It happened to me the same thing I'm fairy tail fan and when I saw erza i had the same reaction
+Toby Sullivan
LMFAO, same here! X'D
haha indeed
Toby Sullivan i saw erza 2 becuase fairy tale is my favorite anime series
Great video brother....just getting started in the wood burning myself but I've always done one form of art or another. Thanks for the video
I really been wanting to do this for awhile now and you just inspired me to go out and get a kit. You did an awesome job!
Awesome work man. Really great stuff. This is the first tutorial that has helped me in what I want to do this for. Because of you, I've just bought a bunch of carbon paper, to help with my woodburning journey :-D Thanks! lol
Love the video
Once I've saw Erza Scarlet. I'd basically instantly subscribed, and the video is really informative as well.
Keep up the content.
Thanks man hope to do Kirito, and Asuna from SAO next week.
I'm not a fan of wood work but when i saw ERZA i watched the full video, Kudos man... keep it up and can you make NATSU as well...
Francis A Thanks man sure thing man.
Francis A why are you capitalizing their names?
Callum Brennan it's just to highlight it duh!
+1 for using Erza Scarlet for your model!
Thanks for the tutorial!
Great job, I really learned a lot, to heck with who thinks it is just tracing. Tracing requires a steady hand, but you managed to create 3 dimensional effects.
+Thomas jaXon Thank you that means a lot. Give it a try it is easier than it looks.
I do woodburning also and I Love it I've been doing it for about 4 yrs now and I learned it from a friend of mine but I would like to learn more any tips are welcome.
I just started yesterday and im using pine and noticed right away the hard and soft spots thanks for the tips dude
Great video. SImple and clear, and of course, easy to see what you were doing.
this is the most helpful video I've seen. thank you
Glad you liked it.
Gotta love Erza Scarlet, perfect model for anything
Super cool, nice work, and keep it up.... this also looks super fun, and super difficult.... you make it look much easier than I'm sure it really is!
I am fixing to burn my first piece. I am doing the cowboy and his horse kneeling at the cross.. Needed some pointers and your video was great Thank you

Super awesome . I didn't know your an artist too.
Well done. Thanks for the tips, they were very helpful. Pic looks great!
yep I got hand it to you man
there two things that I love
one is working on anything and 2 anime you nailed it on the picture good job and the backhoe
Thanks man. Aye me too lol. Funny how two things that don't go together do haha. Thanks again.
Classic Work I know right haha
bro fist too, well done. You have a great presentation. Good job.
First time i watch your videos . Loved this one. I will attempt to do wood burning!
Great work!I noticed you said "how it's sometimes hard to do the eyes with the tool sometimes with the curves". As an artist with just drawing and interested in pyrography. Aye I do move the wood when I can. Like you said for the video I didn't move it so ya'll could see everything. Thanks for watching.
DeadlyDemeiter Actually the eyes are much easier to do with a different type of tip/pen. 😆 It is easier not using a craft/hobby burner like the one in the video. Very impressive. You are an amazing artist.
Great video, thank you for taking the time to make it!
+Castle Of Perserverance Your welcome.
Great tutorial and very help full. I appreciate that you take the time to explain what you are doing and how it should be done. I learn't allot from just watching the way you work the tool. Thank's
Thanks for comment, aye always glad to help.
thank you for this video it really helps and I really enjoyed watching you do it and this is my first time watching you and I thought you were great and I give you a great big👍👍👍👍👍 I hope you have a good one ❤😊
+Lost Boy (Wendy) Thank you. I wish you best of luck.
You got some steady hands brother.
Thanks have a lot of practice.
Beautiful Detailed work nice, thanks for sharing.
Thank you. I've got a new one coming up.
Nice work i plan on starting wood burning as a hobby
It is a good one.
Outstanding & well done, can i ask what about bas-wood i believe that is its name where you are & where i am we call it Lime wood, can that be burnt well because i did a carving of a heart bowl for my sons girlfriend & she wants initials on it this is why i watched your entertaining video thank you.

Ahh, this brings so many memories from school :)
It doesn’t look like your pressing very hard, is that the case? Great video
I'm new at wood burning i was wondering what kind of paper you are tracing that onto the wood i such at free handing i love your video's just subscribed thanks for sharing
+Kyle Robertson Carbon paper is what I used to transfer the picture.
Classic Work I find that regular carbon paper sometimes smears, and is pretty hard to get rid of. I now use graphite paper, and it erases very well.
I was looking for a timelapse just to watch while i drew but i saw erza and decided to watch the whole video c:
Also I find Basswood to be the best to burn on. I don't think you mentioned that wood. It's super light, even toned, smooth and soft. Makes for the best pieces:) Also if purchasing wood you can get some gorgeous pieces with a natural bark border.
I didn't mention it only because I have never burned any of it. I have heard that it does really well, but I didn't want to say something I have never tried.
Ah I see, well if you ever come across it it's excellent wood to burn on:)
Hey, I like your video... It is really clear and helps. Thanks
a great work and good teaching ,thanks!
Fairy Tail!!!!
What a talent, what is the name of that wood thank I had fun watching you burn that pic.
Poplar.
Hi, this is lovely. I am attempting my first project which is a walking stick for my grandson. Please tell me which tip you used for the outline. Thanks
It was the Standard tip. Straight 30° taper.
YES!! ERSA SCARLET!! omg I LOVE Fairy Tail!!!!!!! This anime rocks!!♡♡♡♡♡♡
Glad you liked it.
very nice, great job
wow nice Erza
What tip are you using? Also, great job.

I LOVE ERZA SCARLET, MOST BUETIFUL THING I HAVE LAID ON EYES ON.
if you use pine wood from a craft store like Michaels would that make any difference? my friend wants me to do 4 name plates for her.
+stacey cresswell That pine is a better quality, but it is still pine it will be harder than other woods.
my question is where you get the wood you say to burn on I buy wood from craft stores with the bark on them and do good on
Timothy Nevins go to lowes and buy a 1X6 piece of popular it will come in a 8ft piece. It will be better than anything you've tried. Most hobby shops don't have what you really need. Good luck it is a lot of fun.
what wood are you using? great job
Popular. Thanks.
I have a hard time getting a good solid line across the grain. Maybe my wood burner doesn't get hot enough or my wood isn't sanded enough. Idk
Awesome video! :-)
P.S. I see that my table made it into the video. ;-)
Sorry, new to this. Is that the same as a soldering gun? Maybe with just a specific tip? Thanks!
Alan Byam yep pretty much.
Erzaaaaa + wood burning = imma try this in quarantine
Sound tutorial mate good stuff for me just starting out. Cheers
good work man, thanks it helped!
Great video
any advice on burning olive wood? is slightly light brown. but not light light would.
Olive wood is a good choice just stay away from the heart wood might be hard to burn.
+Delbert Quavehema Just trying new ways of shading will help the most. This is a really good video on that. ua-cam.com/video/j1cER5AiNQM/v-deo.html
OK. I've already begun to use a few of the techniques I observed u using. I had no idea you could use different tips. I only use 1 tip. Check out my work at Quavehema's Fine Arts on Facebook. I'llppost what I did today. Thank you
Delbert Quavehema Hi from Flagstaff! 😆
is that Regular Carbon paper like you use in the office.? Or is that the Graphite type that is used for transfering images onto wood.?
It was the graphite type. I said carbon because I didn't know there was a different type.
+Classic Work awesome, thank you!
fantastic video. I really appreciate it. also nice subject choice :)
+Sabrina Schnack Thank you glad you enjoyed it.
Is bamboo good to burn? Say I had a bamboo longboard and I wanted to burn a sketch I drew into it, would that be okay to do?
+Michael Kotapish I've never burned bamboo before. I've worked with it, and it is very similar to wood, so I would say that it acts like wood. I do know there is a good bit of oil in bamboo, so that may hurt you a little on finishing the piece. If you have a scrap piece try it on it first, and see if you like it. Other than that I'm sure it will burn just fine.
Yeeee learning wood burning and learning to burn a character from my favorite anime.
Excuse me what are the different wood burning tips you used for the lines and the shading
Is it the same tip throughout the project
Thanks!
I did use two different tips, but they were almost the same. One tip would have been plenty.
Your shading work is pretty good but have you ever tried colored pencil?
Anthony Adkins Pencils in genral don't work well on wood. The point if this video was Pyrography
You might like to give mineral spirits and pencils a try. Pencils alone wouldn't look good but try first doing a little shading to fill in spaces, then go over the pencil with mineral spirits. It gives it a really pretty paint looking effect.
Anthony Adkins Another alternative is water color pencils. I use those to give my pieces color. Color it in like a normal colored pencil on paper and then dab water on it to "activate" the paint. It is pretty neat how it turns out.
This looks great! I've practiced a little bit but seem to have trouble. I feel like the tool looses heat too quick and isn't consistent in it's burn. Do you able heavy or light pressure? How long do you let it warm up?
CJ Partridge Be sure you don't have a fan blowing on you or the tool. It will kill your heat. It is uncomfortable, but it works much better. Yes presser helps but be sure your not going to fast.
CJ Partridge 15 mins warm time.
hey, I've just subscribed to you. I was wondering... Are there a lot of pencil marks left over after you finish burning? For example, do you have to go over it with an eraser? If you want to be perfect? thank you.
You can’t really erase them with the carbon paper unless it is a pencil mark but you can lightly sand them off.
@@EEJester1586 apprecia
te it thanks
i was online all day looking for a new burner ,got burned out, lol, went to rest by looking at some youtube, what type of burner do you use if you dont mind my asking, the reviews on some of them are not so good,
+Stella Wells www.rockler.com/10-in-1-woodburning-kit This is a good tool it is the one I used in the video. Most people think you need variable temperature for the tool to be good. That's not true. Most of the time your going to be burning 100% of all the tool can do. Its got good tool tips, and not a bad price. That's my 2 cents thanks for the comment.
Stella Wells Actually it depends on what type of burning you want to do. I never burn at 100%! Granted, I am a different type of burner. I personally prefer a variable burner. It is all in your preference. 😉
what i am thinking is WOW what a great job
What if you stain the dark wood a lighter color. Would you see what you are making?
If you add any kind of stain (even if it is lighter than the wood your using) it will make it darker. Look at it like paint. You start with white, and if you add anything it will make it darker no matter what.
If i were to wood burn and coat it with epoxy, do I need to do anything specific to make sure nothing wrong happens to the wood burning design?
Well what type of finish you pick has a LOT to do with what the outcome will look like. I've got a video on that to help with what to do. ua-cam.com/video/y8Tei3-MuG0/v-deo.html
would an aircraft schematic outline be a good project for a beginner?
+Silas Kuemmerle Oh yeah that sounds like a great one anyway.
that's what I thought, because they do not need shading, but you can add it (also they are all lines)
+Silas Kuemmerle Right give it a shot let me know how it comes out.
which brand of wood burner are you using. cant seem to get one i can get on with, tried and Antex and a Dremel?
Look in the description to find the tool I used it is not the best, but I like it.
Pat McKenzie What type of burner are you looking for?
i think i need to see about the Colwood, i have just had the peter child given to me, but you have to make your own nibs which i do not like, prefer ready made.. When i see others online with a cheap models, they make it look easy with no problems. Thanks for the reply
have you worked with bamboo? does it work very well? looking in doing a cutting board that is bamboo.
I need to try it again, but years ago I did burn some bamboo and it did ok, but it does have a lot of oil in it, so finish might look bad.
would this work on a 4x8 slab of plywood from homedepot?
what tip do you recommend using when outlining?
Nice job! 😆
Amy Burmeister what are you talking about?? Or are you just spamming comments.
AN EASY LOOKIN ERZA
👍😲 TUFF!! 5*
shouldn't you pull the pen instead of pushing it into the line? like tattooing?
Is cedar a good wood? I am just learning how to wood burn.
+Elizabeth Davis I wouldn't recommend it. Cedar burns well, but it is a little to soft.
Did you do that image All with the same burning Tip,? Or did you have to change Tips etc.?
I changed tips once, but only because I had to sharpen the other one. It could all be done with one.
Would sassafras end grain be OK to burn?
what kind of wood are you using in this ?
This proper great mate
I love fairy tail!
Do you recommend pushing the styllis toward or away from you?
Whatever way you can get at it. I push a lot more than pull, but it depends on the piece.
What is that tool your using?
