I bought my daughter a RES when she was 12 years old & now she's 25. When she went to college I had to care for her Turtle bc she couldn't take it to school with her. Needless to say, I've had the Turtle ever since. When I got her the Turtle it was the size of a quarter, now the Turtle is the size of a large dinner plate. Her name is Maci & her length is 10½ inches long & 10 inches wide. She's huge . . . 🐢
im 17 and just got my first two red eared sliders for free at work. Some guy tried dropping them off but we can't sell them since they're now illegal in indiana so i just took them off his hands and said i'll take care of them for him. They're only about 3 or 4 inches long and are so freaking cute
Our red eared slider is around 33 years old and when we got her she was in a 4ft x 2ft tank with one very blocked filter and nothing else in the tank other than a standard house bulb above the tank. Luckily we found her and she now has everything she needs. But can't belive she survived for this long with no filtration in a very small tank and only one type of food, as far as I know this turtle had been kept like this for about ten years...Obviously I'm not saying anyone should ever keep a turtle in these conditions. But considering her last owner kept her like that and she's 33 with no health conditions we are aware of, this is an amazing story considering everyone says how hard these turtles are to look after. Just thought I would put this in the comments as it's a crazy story and at 33 years old she's almost as old as the 41 year old guineas record holder for red eared sliders.
I've had my 3 Red Eared Sliders for 20 years. They were like the size of a 50 cent piece when I got them. I have one very large female and the other two are male. They are all separated because years ago my female would always shove the male's away from her and when I had the two male's together, one of them got territorial and kept attacking the other so they had to be separated. They bring me happiness. I love my shelled babies. Lol
I rescued mine several years ago in a dry pond and due to his growing in size upgraded him to a 105 gallon container with natural sun light in which he strives. Used to have 2 of them but they didn't really appreciate each other's company.
Only 15 years?! Try FORTY to FIFTY years in captivity, especially if the tank environment is large enough for the growing red eared slider turtle to comfortably swim and basically live without stress. Let's not forget, having the correct UVB lighting, a heat lamp, an excellent filter, an underwater heater (for turtle owners who live in cold climates), a large enough basking area and the correct diet throughout the aquatic turtles entire life.
Umm ya 15 years? I’ve had my pet red eared for 25 years and he was at least 5 when I got him. I expect him to live close to 50 years. I consider him to be middle aged at this point. And he acts middle age
i love your Aquarium. how did you put that big wall rock display on your aquarium? and how did you make water fall from that wall rock like if it was a waterfall?
I got my red eared slider turtle at petco when I was 18 with one job now I am almost 33 with 2 part time jobs and I routinely clean half the 75g aqaurium every week feed her a little every night and one year 3 months she disappeared thank god it was a mild year. so yeah we had quite a relationship.
My turtle is overweight and he's in a tank in terrible condition, he is half his tank. What can I do? My parents don't give a shit and passive-aggressively shrug me off when I try to have a say in something. Even if I have to give him away to rescue or, whatever will help him have a better life, I want to know what I can do. He's precious to me but he doesn't even get sunlight and it breaks my fucking heart to think about it. He doesn't even get to swim and My dad does shit to him that if I call out, I'd be told off. We got him from someone who didn't know jack shit about him. My turtle hasn't eaten in half a week, we fed him shrimp since a young age because he stopped taking turtle pallets, he is 4 years old.
I know this was posted a while ago, but when I was younger with my turtle I went through a similar experience. Here’s some tips that helped me out of this situation: Your parents won’t do anything about it, so you need to take up the responsibly of it yourself. If you’re old enough and able to get a job, get one! Spend your paychecks on turtle supplies. If you aren’t old enough, start hoarding as much money as you can to save up for a large tank. Maybe do odd jobs around your area (ex: mowing lawns, dog walking, babysitting, etc.) if you get birthday/Christmas money, save it! If your parents give you 5 bucks for whatever reason, save it! Start with the bare minimum. Something half as good is better than something terrible, And then work your way up from there once you know your turtle is in a safe environment. A 40 gallon that’s maybe a little bit too small is better than a 10 gallon that your turtle can’t even turn around in. As for enclosures, look for secondhand or dollar per gallon sales. Check places like Craigslist, garage sales, thrift stores, or Facebook marketplace. Check multiple times a day if you need to! I’ve gotten large tanks secondhand for 30 bucks. Give yourself the opportunity to get lucky. If you can’t find or can’t afford a glass tank, try getting a plastic toddler pool (ones large enough for turtles are like 15 bucks) or some sort of large plastic storage bin. Your parents may not like these options as much though. Just make sure whatever you use can withstand the water pressure. Even though I would highly recommend a filter, you could get away with doing VERY frequent water changes If you’re super tight on money. And as long as you have good heat lamps, you shouldn’t need a water heater unless it gets super cold in your house. The heat lamps will be your most expensive purchase, but you’ll only need to buy them every 6 months to a year. Stand-alone halogen bulbs are about 16 USD and uvb is about 20 where I live. However, at petco and on Amazon, you can get a combo kit of these for about 25 dollars (if you go to petco In person, remember to price match with the website!) you can get the light fixtures themselves at hardware stores for way cheaper than the ones marketed towards reptiles! Look for baby bird heat lamp domes. As for the food issue, get some cheap turtle food. Tetra Reptomin sticks are the best cheap food you can get. Completely cut out the dried shrimp and ONLY offer the sticks. Your turtle won’t eat them for a little bit, but it *will* get hungry enough to eat the sticks and eventually switch over. I’ve had to do this multiple times with my turtle, and its a pretty common problem with other people too. If your turtle starts to loose weight from not eating, offer the shrimp again for a couple weeks and then try again with the sticks. You can do more research on this yourself, I’ve heard people call it “the tough love treatment” or something like that. Your turtle is still young, so If you manage to get all these down before it hits maturity, you can potentially save it from metabolic bone disease, stunting, pyramiding, and shell rot!! But regardless, turtles are VERY hardy, and will likely be okay long enough for you to get his enclosure set up with the bare minimum If you can’t do any of that, yes, you’ll need to consider rehoming. Just do not release your turtle into a pond outside. There are rescues for specifically red eared sliders, or you could try putting an ad up online. I wish you and your turtle the best ❤️ i understand how rough of a situation it is when you’re just a kid and aren’t able to take care of your own pet. Id love to help if i can, so if there’s anything else please don’t be afraid to reply to my comment. Good luck!!

3yrs later we built a pond and outdoor enclosure. Ive tried turtle food from the pet shop but no interest. I've tried lettuce 😞 only thing they want is corn. Im here for advice, I have 3 aquatic turtles (1 adult map, 1 adult red eared, 1 juvenile red belly slider and 1 box turtle) the enclosure is about the size of 15x15 with a large pond (3ft deep, 6ft round). Box turtle wonders around the pond in plants and brush. They're not eating unless they are doing so under water??? They share the pond with minnows, goldfish and random frogs. Should I assume they're eating like the food chain or be adding food? The box turtle is also only interested in corn. Ive offered supwrworms, grubs, earthworms but no luck... unless they're eating them under the water. Guidance please
Mine gets a variety of pellets, freeze dried vegetables, fresh cabbage leaves, meal worms(we spilt them with turtle as well as our chickens and rooster). Once he's big enough we'll also treat him to the same feeder fish we get the chickens.
My turtle does this when her skin is particularly dry. I think she’s just scratching her head. I give her aquarium salt baths, which makes her skin less dry. She stops doing that when her skin isn’t dry.

Maybe you can answer me...Is it possible for a turtle(A red eared slider) to bond with a human like a dog, or a cat? Because as far as I am concerned, reptile's feelings are not the same as mamals, but, I would like to know if my two babies like me or if I'm more like a phenomenom that feeds them. Like...I want to make them happy with things I have, and, for now, they are very young.
My red eared slider I’ve had for 25 years and he was at least 5yo when I got him. I’m most definitely a “phenomenon” that feeds him but he’s a very curious creature that I let out of the enclosure to wander the house and seems to look for people to hang around with…. Even the cat. The cat can’t be bothered with him tho. They have quite the personality once you get to know them. But I don’t think they have emotion like most animals do

He likes to roam in the house and sleeps under my bed. he has his hide-out place in the aquarium. he just likes to follow me around the house. very active in playing with me.
Put some pellets or shrimp🦐 in his basking plate and it should work. I did that to my turtle 🐢 and now I can't get him off the basking. He loves basking
my turtle suddenly stopped eating food from last month still now not even opening its mouth I took it veterinary hospital but they even don't know about turtle can anyone just help me
How about a proper netted tank cover? In this video, why are the lights over an open tank? I would never hang any sort of bulbs over an open tank, that's dangerous, even more dangerous if you have a cat! Cats love to climb, a cat will try to get at the turtle. Any lamps over a turtle tank without a lid can accidentally fall into the tank and electrocute a turtle. Please get correct information before deciding on getting a turtle for a pet. Taking care of a turtle isn't as easy as many assume.
Do you have a turtle?
No but I used to have one I gave it to my cousin because my mom was scared of it
