OMG! I cringe to think those were ever in a dumpster and considered trash. They’ve found their momma. I could have listened to another 45 minutes of Doris’s Fashion History Course 😜

I work in luxury fashion in a highend department store in the UK. I've work with all of the big names, Dior, YSL Balmain etc. The amount of people who consider these iconic brands as throwaway fashion pains me. A former colleague of mine who was 18 at the time thought Balenciaga was a street wear brand that had been going since the early 2000s. He was surprises when i told him that Balenciaga had taught all the great designers and help perfect their crafts. I have key peices in my wardrobe that ive had for years and still look brand new. If you pay extra for great fashion/tailoring it will last you a ling time as in the items mentioned above in the video.

That's the really sad thing about fashion, it's no longer about style, quality and creativity, it's all about marketing and branding.

Sadly everything has become underappreciated and disposable. The millenials have no attention span whatsoever and they don't know that pieces of art have an intrinsic value that has nothing to do with money. So glad I am generation X. I despair for the future.

It pains me how Balenciaga is rebranded as this cool hip streetwear brand when it was all about luxury, craftsmanship, pure couture work, futurism, and was even named as king of haute couture. the designers such as chanel and dior are thought to be the top when in fact Balenciaga was their leader (they even both admitted this) who was known for dressing queens, not only princesses. Balenciaga closed his house when the RTW became all the rage refusing to give up haute couture and move with modern ideas and later died of broken heart because of this. And yet, people think that this hype crappy ill fitted garments brand is the real deal. In another words, they simply used his name to make money when it reflects nothing of his values.

I love your channel. YSL has been on my radar recently. I am a collector without a lot of money. I collect Vogue Patterns of designers. The other sad thing about me as a collector is that I want patterns that will fit my fat behind. One exception has been a Halston pattern I purchased. That’s it. I was so excited to find a YSL pattern that wasn’t an arm and a leg and it had the American Designer tag. I’m so happy. I’m telling you all this because you’re the only other person I know who is as excited about designers as I am. I live on the edge of civilization. Coyotes snd bald eagles are some of my neighbors. I’m so glad you were able to recover after all that had happened to you. Thank you for this UA-cam channel. Peace

WOW! Those pieces are so incredible. The red dress absolutely stole my heart, what an incredible piece, beautiful silhouette and the detailing on the bodice is so interesting. Seeing the internal construction of these pieces is fascinating - what craftmanship!
The fact that those two pieces were tossed in a dumpster is so crazy. Unfathomable for haute couture to end up in such a grave.
I learned a lot from this video, thank you again for your expertise and passion for art, history and fashion.
Concerning the auctions - I'd be interested to hear about some of the pieces you were most determined to get over your career, maybe the pieces that required your highest ever spend to secure.

Canlita Incanta Hello again. It sure I have ever really been laser-focused and determined to “win” something at auction. My method is to preview and next to the description I place a monetary limit on what I would bid- plus or minus. That way I don’t get sucked into a bidding war. Even though I am passionate about vintage fashion- it is a business and I have to be logical about my expenditure. There have been many items that have slipped through my fingers but the reality is- there is a lot more out there to find.
      Thanks again for your interest.

Canlita Incanta I can’t seem to locate your other question pertaining to the Chicago estate. The notification that came in showed words up to the boots but cut off the rest. I think you were asking about the turquoise suede fringe pair? If that’s the case- I ended selling them because they were too narrow for me.

My jaw hit the floor!! A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! Thank you for the pictures of the foundations of the dresses. I know it is upsetting to some that the original lining of the red dress is missing, but to others, like me, being able to see the master's hand beneath the underlining is invaluable. The reason the dresses have the presence they do is because of everything that occurs there. The framework & support structure the dress is sculpted upon is sandwiched right there between the "pretty" layers. The thousands of tiny hand stitches in that bodice...... I'm in awe!
I do hope you have told your friend that there is no such thing as a ruined designer gown (unless it has turned to ashes). Although it may be stained or tattered in areas, they are invaluable teaching tools to others.

    • @thewaywewore7371
      @thewaywewore7371  5 років тому

Christian Dior is attributed in saying “ Without proper foundations, there can be no fashion”. That was then and things have definitely changed.
I do want to mention the red dress’ underpinnings are intact. The red stitching is something that was done afterwards- perhaps by the theatre company. I want to find a fine hand that can get rid of all of the non-original stitches, etc. it’s not a priority but it is my intention. Glad you found inspiration in seeing the inside of the garments. I will try to do more of that with other haute couture items we will focus on.
      Thanks!

I love your channel! I am a forty-something Southern Belle from Mississippi who loved to play in my grandmother’s jewelry box as a child. She taught me to be careful with it and how to dress pieces up or down (that wasn’t her terminology) with “Sunday” bags, scarves and all the way down to something so simply easy as a beautiful red lipstick. She wasn’t wealthy and even made most of her own clothes so when I saw on the Smithsonian Channel clips of designers coming to purchase vintage pieces to use as inspiration I, well, got inspired to learn more of what you do. You are fascinating, darling, and you are a vast well of knowledge! I’m so thankful to have stumbled across your establishment’s channel!
