"Not in my name" Please don't regard all Brits as xenophobic, jingoistic, empire-building, despots. Some of us are decent human beings. Working class people who have been trodden-on for centuries by our "betters", just the way that the Irish people have.
Good point. There's been a lot of half truths, omissions, and outright deceptions regarding Britain's treatment of Ireland over the centuries. 1 example is the so called "Potato Famine" of 1845 - 1850. This was an attempted genocide of the Irish people by the Crown forces. Over half of Britain's 130,000 strong army was stationed in Ireland at that time, to ensure that the plentiful food was allowed passage to the Irish ports for export. There was abundant food produced in Ireland in those years. It was stolen by the army at gunpoint. Over 2 million Irish died and 1 million luckily were able to emigrate and so save their lives. But the other thing that doesn't get talked about is that Britain was facing serious food shortages due to the over dependance on potatoes aswell. There was a disease called blight and this was rotting the spuds in the ground. However the population of England at that time was over 20 million and there was nowhere near enough food to feed so many people...
Yeah, don't worry we know. When we say "British Bastards" for example.. we mean the Tory Party, The Royal Family, The Upper Crust , The House of Lords.... All those bastards... We've nothing against regular ordinary English, Welsh and Scottish people , well, except for the English football "fans" ...most of us know they are not representative of the English people , but unfortunately the football fans are ambassadors for your nation. Ireland gets awarded for its good behaviour in France. England gets a bunch of embarrassing videos for the world to see. Majority of people will see past the nonsense but you will hear a lot of comments like "typical English, ruining everything for everyone" around football matches but besides that we don't care anymore. Unless it's the rugby then the whole country goes nuts if we win against England even if England is still winning the tournament, we don't care we just love the little victories - some of us get a little emotional. But that's about as far as it goes for the vast vast majority of people in Ireland. Anyone who "hates the English" is usually poor, uneducated, unread and has most likely been outside their crappy little town. And besides it's a little rich to still be sore, especially when Ireland was colonising Scotland half a millennium before Henry II visited.
I can't be the first and only American to express this sentiment, so at the risk of repeating an unoriginal anaology, I muat say, I've always viewed Hume as the Irish MLK. And yes, I understand the irony in that the original Martin Luther enabled the protestant faith - literally, "I protest" against the Catholic Church - however, it is still an apt association and effective short hand for introducing Hume to the uninitiated.
Hi. I think there used to be a brief video clip on this channel about Protestants who are supporting a united Ireland (I don't mean the documentary already up!) If you remember the one, is there any chance you could upload it again? All the best
