Yes! I remember his pink Vandenberg! Absolutely love Rex. Had the honor of being a friend and in his blues-rock band "The Rex Carroll Sessions" while he was on hiatus from WC. He had another band "King James" that released a couple of records. Most recently, however, he reformed with his earlier band "Fierce Heart" and is about to release a new album "War For The World." Thank you very much for this lesson. Rex is a great guitar player, but even better, he is a very nice guy!

Rex was among 3-5 players that got me into playing...I definitely never saw this lesson coming. The riffs from Down and Heaven's Calling Tonight were seminal for me. Saw them live in DFW at least twice in the late 80s/early 90s. I liked you before Dave, love ya now.

Dave...Rex Carrol is a huge find! Rex is tearing up that first Whitecross album. If you can get around the drummer’s bad meter...it’s high end 80s hard rock guitar. Thanks again for going into the ‘way back’ machine and unearthing this gem.

Awesome! I've always loved his playing! He is among the best players to come out of the 80's yet he can switch to face melting SRV no problem. So well rounded! Any time I want to be inspired I listen to Rex. Underrated, but you'd be a fool to think that he didn't capture the attention of other well known guitarists of the day. That kind of virtuosity simply cannot be ignored.. He was, and still is, a rock God.

OMG!! I just sent my son Whitecross songs to listen to 2 days ago. I told him to start with Nagasaki then listen to the whole thing. Had almost forgot them. I was lucky enough to see them at a high school in my area back then. So glad you posted this! He is a beast! I've always thought they sounded like Ratt. Enough is Enough from the debut especially lol.

Great playing&tone!Bravo!Thank you for acknowledging RC's contribution to the Rock guitar world. And not just"throwing out the baby with the bathwater"like most people do once they find out RC was in a Christian band.I too find inspiration in MANY different places/genre's of music, and on many different instruments.LEVITICUS was another great Christian metal band(Sweden)Underrated,"Setting fire to the earth"was the album. The lead vocalist(Terry Haw)and Bass(Ez Gomer)were the"shining stars"of THAT band(Shining Stars period!).The songs and harmonies were incredible.I saw Whitecross in Corpus Christi TX years ago(89'?),at a Skating rink! There were like 50 people in attendance!☹.Rex is too flashy(badass)for the Religious crowd. So am I!😁.Eventhough I'm a Christian.

My lab partner in college turned me on to White Cross and really blew me away! My all-time favorite band is Iron Maiden, so he also gave me some Barren Cross to listen to which, between those two bands (and Stryper) totally turned me on to Christian Metal.
There's a song "In Your Face" by Shout - it's a total shred fest!!! You gotta check out the licks in that tune! Definitely a guitar player's kinda music! Excellent video here as always dude!

I was either 15 or 16, thinking that because I didn't drive there, went and saw Whitecross at a little warehouse church. Maybe a 100 people there. Mostly kids. Youth leader from the church brought them in for the concert. He was a crazy dude with a big ass mullet. I stood 5 feet from Rex all night and was deaf for 2 days afterwords. Big Marshall stacks behind him. Totally nuts scene. The bass player had seriously the longest hair I've ever seen. Like country singer Crystal Gayle. It went to the floor and he could head bang and whip it better than any metal dude from the day. we stood in awe of Rex. I had that first album on cassette and could hum ever note from that album. To watch him up close for the whole night was unreal. It is burnt into brain forever. This guy is so under rated. Yes they sounded like Ratt. I played in a christian rock band as a kid. 2 of our members were more than 10 years older than me. the singer as well. So much fun. So the twin brother's from our band family owned a christian book store. They had a music section. That's where I was first exposed to Whitecross. The demo cd they were given had a sticker that literally said " sounds like Ratt" on it. My buddies didn't even know who Ratt was. True story. Yep I grew up with Rex basically. Look up the song " Because of Jesus". Has one of the best blues metal riffs ever created. I promise. I still have my Whitecross T-shirt I bought that night and a lesson theory book that Rex wrote that has the tab for Nagasaki in it. Way over my pay grade! Biggest take away that night was hanging with Rex afterwords talking to all us kids. He said that guitar was the only skill he had in life. If he couldn't play guitar he would have to work at McDonald's or 7-11. Wow. that's commitment. Sorry, long winded but just part of my childhood. Thanks dude honoring Rex.

Your videos are brilliant. There's an emphasis on rock and metal... and I like rock and metal... but you cover such a wide range of styles.
Maybe this is slightly out there... but... how about some more 80s chart stuff... perhaps some Duran Duran, some of the tracks on Rio have a really spooky quality... also Level 42... not just the Allan Holdsworth stuff... some interesting tracks.

Rex is awesome, and your breakdown of his style is dead on. I had for awhile a Vandenberg and a Peavey Rock Master preamp (which I think is what he was using back in the day?) and tube power amp rig, trying to get the classic "Rex" sound. Had to sell the Vandenberg, and the Peavey Rock Master rig was destroyed in my house fire.

I didn‘t know Rex until this lesson and I must say „Wow!!“ How could I be so blind over the years?! And the lesson itself is again awesome!
A suggestion (pls check my facebook pm, too) is the consider a Chord Play video feature about Alcatrazz. Not only because their new album is due on July 31 which already triggered a lot of attention among all of us and although Alcatrazz‘ list includes the likes of Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Vai which you already covered, there has been also Danny Johnson and now Joe Stump. It seems to me that Alcatrazz however created a melodic metal brand which became so-to-say „accessible“ for many guitarists. It‘s a good momentum.

Admittedly, new to me, but from what you illustrated, he was/is a 'shredder' of sorts that had to whether they admit or not influence a number of youngsters of the fretboard over the last few decades. Definitely gave me some stuff to work out at least the one time even if 'shred' is not my own thing. Never hurts to push it beyond the 'box' and try new stuff to augment one's own style.😎
I've got Ken Tamplin's 'Axe To Grind' album from back when and it is 'Christian Rock' I'd dare say and despite all the fretboard prowess he demonstrated on that lp, he is, what(?) now doing the vocal coaching thing. Crazy, huh?

voronOsphere , Because I knew of Rex Carroll and whitecross way back in the 80s (and most of CCM, too). I knew they sounded like ratt and noticed the ratt cover in the usual place even before he mentioned it,
Then I realized I jumped the gun.

@@godawg1023 Makes sense. I still have to check them out, because this lead guitar work sounds nothing like Ratt. I bet a Whitecross Chordplay video would reveal more of the Ratt flavors.

I just saw Whitecross last Saturday and yes Rex is still with them. He is one of my favorites and you just sounded amazing man. Did you learn the riffs too. He has a way to let the riff talk

Love the content ... never heard of Rex Carrol ... he’s probably never of heard of me 😂 ... what about 3 licks from Shawn Lane or Johnnie Hiland ?
