  • In this video we start building our Revell UH-1D Huey Gunship model kit in 1/32 Scale. We deal with warped parts and use scratch building to improve our kit supplied pilot seats.
    This kit was first released in 1967 with new tooling in 1969. This version is the 2015 release with new decals added.
    The UH-1 Iroquois was first ordered by the US Military in 1952 and saw extensive use in Vietnam. It enjoyed a very long service in many militaries around the world and some are still in use today.
    I hope you enjoy this video.

    Nice modelling. You inspire me to make the effort on kits that may initially seem bad, but with some thought and effort can be improved dramatically.

    Warped part are a real pain in old kit. I picked up an old Monogram P-61 I had built way back when and the molds are so bad now it's a real shame. Kit companies should just retire their worn out molds. It does not help young modelers who maybe put off on starting out leading them to believe all kits are like these. Granted they were great when new, but nothing lasts forever. I have been modeling 60 years and even with all my accumulated skills you just can't beat an old horse. I have fun watching your videos, just calm and relaxed. I think most builders now have lost the idea and meaning of kit building, As my mother once said " as long as it kept you off the streets " was the idea and the thrill is still there walking out of the hobby shop with your new kit under arm !

      Hi Joe, thanks for watching. Like you, I love getting a new kit, something kind of magical about that. And yes, those warped parts are a real pain to deal with that's for sure. I will say that, for me anyway, I may be looking back at these old kits when they were new with rose colored glasses. When I was young I was just thrilled to get a kit, I didn't think too much about how good or bad it was. Maybe I've just grown more critical of the kit nowadays, and it might be that they were always bad, lol. Take care my friend. Johnny

      Hi k333rl, happy to hear that you're getting back into modeling! I to had a long pause in my modeling. You've chosen an iconic kit that's been around for a long time, but it does have issues common with older kits, take your time and make sure to test fit and correct everything, lol. @hillbillymodeling my trouble now is that because I'm not sure if this hobby is for me at this time in my life I won't want to go blow a couple hundred on an airbrush set up. Any chance on doing a 'back to basics' kind of a deal where you brush paint?

    • @hillbillymodeling
      @hillbillymodeling  Рік тому +2

      @@k333rl These old kits have fit issues, as you have discovered. I personally test fit everything, you will never go wrong by taking the time and make sure it all goes together as intended. Glad I could be of help for you.

    • @hillbillymodeling

      @@k333rl I fully understand. A good airbrush and a compressor are one of those things you need to be committed to in the hobby. Hand brushing large areas can be a challenge. Tamiya paints are some of the finest you can get in the hobby, but, they dry really quickly making it hard to bet a good finish on large parts. My suggestion is to use water-based acrylics from your local hobby store often referred to as craft paints. They are cheap, durable, can be thinned with water, and come in just about any color you will ever need without having to mix custom colors right off the bat. They dry very smooth limiting the effects of brush strokes and you won't have to wait for days for it to dry like enamel paints. Just a little practice with thinning and brushing and you should be able to master the craft paints easily with very little expense. I hope that I am giving you good advice, lol, and these paints won't break the bank! Good luck my friend. Johnny

    Just found your channel, love what your doing. I'm working on the same model, trying to recreate what we had in Viet Nam back in 1966-67. If you could/would, where is a good source for the "styrene sheets, .25 and ,5 mm. HobbyTown here in Yorktown, VA doesn't have it. Really like what you did with the seats.

      Hi Ron, thanks so much for the kind compliment. Since you're watching the series I'm sure you know that this kit has lots of challenges, just take your time with it. The polystyrene sheet that I'm using is "evergreen scale models item no. 9008". It's a variety pack that has 0.010, 0.020, and 0.040 inch thicknesses. I got mine at Hobby Lobby for $4.59, which is the only hobby store close to me. I have also found a large selection of these products on Amazon as well. Best of luck with your build my friend, if you have any questions feel free to ask anytime! Model on. Johnny

    As a reference, US Army in Vietnam rarely used these weapons on the D/H variants. However, the Royal Australian Air Force did, mounting rocket launchers on the forward position, as in your build, and fixed M60 machine gun mounts at the door gunner stations. The Aussies called themselves the Bushmasters.

    In addition to this kit, I also would like to provide similar corrections, improvements, detailing, etc., to Revell’s 1:25th-scale kit of the Bell UH-1 Iroquois Huey U.S. Army utility helicopter. Then include with them either Academy’s or Dragon’s 1:35th-scale Huey model (the Dragon kit has the double windows in the wider door; I later see that your Revell 1:32nd-scale kit does, too--I am rather more familiar with Second World War combat aircraft), the Kittyhawk 1:48th-scale kit, and the Italeri 1:72nd-scale miniature. All these to create a forced-perspective ærial diorama (FPÆD) at low altitude of a troop deployment battlefield (with a couple M-48 Patton tanks, several M-113 Armoured Personnel Carriers [APCs], a line of M-35 cargo trucks, a platoon or two of soldiers, etc.).
