- In this video we wrap up this build with exterior painting, decals, weapons install, light weathering, and the final reveal of our Revell UH-1D Huey Gunship model kit in 1/32 Scale.
This kit was first released in 1967 with new tooling in 1969. This version is the 2015 release with new decals added.
The UH-1 Iroquois was first ordered by the US Military in 1952 and saw extensive use in Vietnam. It enjoyed a very long service in many militaries around the world and some are still in use today.
I hope you enjoy this video.
Nice build, well done! I used some of your techniques myself on this build. I wanted to offer some advice back. I noticed your windows above the pilot are not tinted green. Here is what you can do, get CLEAR decal paper, print two 1 x 1 dark green squares, and then seal it with a high gloss clear coat, not a matte coat. When it dries and you slip the decal off the background, you will have a perfect little piece of green window tint that is translucid just as it should be. It even has its own adhesive on the back. Apply the decal to the inside of the window to protect it, trim the edges and/or apply your regular window clear coat if you use one. Luckily on this build the curve in the windows is so slight there is no need to worry about warping the decal.
Thanks for the tip, I really appreciate it. I'm glad you found something useful in this series, I really enjoyed building it, I learned a lot in the process which should come in handy next time, we learn by doing. Thanks for watching my friend! Johnny
Amazing details, inside and outside...Congrats, a real pleasure to watch!
Thank you so much Phil😀
Can't find the proper words to describe how awesome this Huey came out. Fantastic build series Johnny, i enjoyed every moment of this challenge. As always I am eager to see what you will tackle next. Thanks for sharing, take care and keep up the good work my friend.
Glad you enjoyed it George. Stay safe and model on!
What a wonderful build. You did a really job considering all the issues with the older kit. You deserve a real pat on the back and a beer, so Happy New Year, my friend 👍😀
Glad you enjoyed it Vincent, I'll be needing that beer, lol. Happy New Year! Johnny
Great Model Build! I built the other Revel gunship way back in the 1970s. The war was just over.
Wow, that was a while ago, lol. This is a difficult kit to get it to look good, I'm happy with the way it came out. Thanks for watching, take care and model on. Johnny
Great build appsalutly picked up some ideas and great techniques Thank you ever so much for all of your time and effort in making all of your videos 🇺🇸
You are very welcome! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch my little videos, it means a lot! I'm just learning as I go, I guess that's true for all of us, lol. Take care and have a great weekend! Johnny
I built this kit 4yrs ago, long as you take your time and do your own adjustments to the fit issues, it will come out beautiful.
These old kits do require a different set of skills than those needed for building the newest kits on the market. Me personally, I love the challenge! Thanks for watching, take care and model on my friend. Johnny
What a great final reveal! If there were fit issues, it doesn't show! Excellent job, keep up the great work and videos, please!
Thank you, very much kind Sir! I wish there was a newer offering of the Huey in a large scale. Thanks for watching, take care and model on! Johnny
love the final results of this build series! Really enjoyed watching you build the crew seats! Happy New Year!
Thanks a bunch Floki! Happy New Year to you too!
Love what you have done to an old kit. Great Job, George
Many thanks George, I'm happy you enjoyed the build my friend! Johnny
Awesome looking Johnny, seamless clean build. Great job. 👍
Glad you like it David, Happy New Year buddy!
I am new to modeling (don't even have any tools with the exception of an xacto knife and cutting mat) and I picked up this kit. I quickly realized this might not be the best kit to try and work on for a first timer. Whenever I get around to this one I hope my Huey comes out a fraction as good as yours! The decals, and Olive Green you have the this huey is perfect. I've grown up seeing these as my dad worked on them and your model is truly awesome. Cheers
Thank you so much for giving my little build a look! You don't need a lot to get started in modeling, but your right about this kit! To get it up to "modern standards" of modeling it requires you to put in a lot more effort. But remember, when you start out in a new hobby, just please yourself, like all hobbies, we learn by doing, take it slow, enjoy the process, progress at your own speed. Before you know it, you'll be challenging yourself with each build! Remember to have fun doing it and you're on your way!! 😉The best advice I could ever give anyone is don't judge yourself and your abilities by what you see others doing. Concentrate on what you want to achieve and achieve it. Thanks so much for watching and good luck on all your builds, model on my friend! Johnny
Nice result on this kit. Paint job came out excellent. 👍
Thank you, Dave! Have a Happy New Years! Cheers!
Very very impressive result! 👍👍👍
Thank you very much Zorg! I hope you have a Happy New Year!
Nice work, I built one of these a year or so ago, saw so many people disliking the kit but for the price you get a good model with a bit of work
Cool, thanks Scale Stuff. Old Revell kits have always had some issues. But, as you say, for the price and with a bit of work, you can have a nice display piece. Johnny
@@hillbillymodeling Same with most of the old kits tbh, I had to ship mine in from the states, was cheaper than buying one over here, anything iconic and american themed hard to get....other than patton tanks, there ten a penny and go for not even a 10er
Very nice job on the kit even with all of the issues it has.
Thank you, I appreciate that! And yes, it does have issues, lol! Stay safe and model on my friend. Johnny
fantastic video my friend one word WOW you done a stunning job of the huey from the scratched built interior to the finnished paint job been a pleasure following this build you made a good kit into a stunning kit and you should be proud of what you done a big happy new year to you and your family
Thank you very much Rob! Those are very kind words my friend. Happy New Year to and yours as well! Stay safe and model on!! Johnny
@@hillbillymodeling no problem my friend cant wait to see what is next
I'm building this model now, I can only hope it turns out half as good as yours sir. Very fine model.
I hope so too James! Actually, I'm sure you can do better than I did! Thanks so much for watching, good luck on your Huey my friend. Johnny
Hi Johnny, Your Huey really turned out nice. Great job painting all those markings and the scratch built parts look perfect. Thanks for sharing. Happy New Year! Jeff
Thanks Jeff👍have a Happy New Year my friend! Johnny
Awesome build my friend keep up the good work 👍👍👍👍
Thanks Juan👍I really appreciate it my friend. Take care and model on! Johnny
The helicopter looks awesome!! Very good job, nice way to finish this year, have fun in the party and happy new year!!
Thanks German, I really appreciate it. Have a Happy New Year!
Really great job, Johnny. It's a difficult build which you handled and explained well, looking forward to the next one. Happy new year.
Happy new year Gerry! Yeah, not the best kit but the subject is a great one to build. Thanks for following the build, stay safe and model on my friend! Johnny
Nice work. Really nice example on how to turn bad kit into something beautiful.
Thanks ragezor, that's a high compliment, I appreciate it my friend. Thanks for watching, take care. Johnny
great video and great way the huey looks
Glad you enjoyed it Shane. Have a Happy New Year!
i just got this kit and a bunch of what you did on this will really help, i love the troop seat thing
Hi Earnie, it's not the best fitting kit that's for sure, but if I compare price to potential, I think it's a deal. Just have to do some work to get there, lol. Good luck with your build! Thanks for watching my friend! Johnny
@@hillbillymodeling trust me I already know lol, AMT kits are even worse, I'm doing a troop ship build on mine and your seat build is what I needed to se
Well done Johnny the Huey looks awesome even with the issues happy new year
Thanks Jeff, have a Happy New Year my friend!
Johnny, nice job. You have a lot of patience. Happy new year.
Thanks Jimmy👍Happy New Year buddy! Johnny
very nice work. awesome paint jod and details
Thank you so much 😀
@@hillbillymodeling you are welcome
Love the techniques and all of these 7 videos. Looking to check out the others!
Awesome! Thank you! Greatly appreciated my friend. Take care and model on!! Johnny
Awesome build buddy!! This is the most impressive build I have seen on your channel so far!! Great job on making something out of nothing!! Revell really should make new molds of some of their older kits.. model on Johnny buddy!!✌️
Thanks a bunch Jared B! Yes, this isn't much of a kit, would be nice if Revell would update the molds. Model on and have a Happy New Year buddy! Johnny
This Huey is splendid . You have done a really great job with this old kit . What about now adding a crew ? All my best wishes for 2023 . Robert
Thank you Robert. As for a crew, it's near impossible to find figures that I can get my hands on in 1/32 scale, so we will leave it at that. Happy New Year my friend! Johnny
Nice job, I am working on one too. Just a suggestion, you can airbrush the overhead windows with Tamiya clear green.
Thanks! I'll have to try that, appreciate the tip!
Incredible
Thank you for your kind complement, and thanks for watching. 😊Johnny
New subscriber here, found your channel in my UA-cam feed. Great work on the UH-1D Huey. That thing is huge. Nearly all my aircraft builds are 1/48 and my cars are 1/24 - 1/25 scale for space reasons.
Thanks for the sub, Ed! This kit has wonderful detail and terrible fit issues, but it is old as am I, guess I got my own issues, LOL!! But it can be built up with nice results. It is a very large scale, like you, most of my aircraft builds are 1/48. Thanks for watching, take care and model on! Johnny
Great series I really enjoyed watching you work your magic. ✌Canada✌
HI James, I don't know about magic, but I love to make things, lol. Thank you for your generous comment my friend, I'm happy that you enjoyed the series. Take care and model on! Johnny
Your model builder skill is good , much better than me . I really enjoy watching the way you build them in every detail, color. I was wonder can you list all of those color that you are using for this model ! Many thank 🙏🏻
Hi Thien, thank you very much for the wonderful comment and for tuning in and watching this build! I don't have a "list" of colors I used in the build, I just introduce each one I use as I use it in the video. Every color I use is referenced in the build videos. Take care and model on my friend.
Looks awesome
Thank you, I'm happy you enjoyed the build my friend! Johnny
Nicely done ! Where did you get the mesh/screen you used for the engine covers and your finger clamps?
I think I mentioned this in the video, the mesh is left over material from Tamiya's Merkava bussel rack construction, I always keep scrap material like this just in case, like the engine covers here on our Huey. I do know that modeling mesh is available on Amazon, I think Hasegawa offers some PE mesh. You can also find the clamps on Amazon, that's where I got mine, just search for Excel Blades 3 inch clamp, or, Excel Blades 7 inch clamps and you'll find them. Hope this helps, take care and model on! Johnny
Very nice build. Unfortunately, Revell got it wrong. The U.S.Army didn’t fly Uh-1D or H models as gunships. The only gunships they flew were Uh-1b and C and Ah-1g cobras.
Hi Jesse, yes, you are right about the D and H models never being gunships for the US Army. I believe I mentioned that in one of the videos, lol. Thanks for watching and model on my friend! Johnny
Wish I'd found this video before I started. Just staying true to our name😁
Hi WingIT Productions, Thanks for giving it a look, I really appreciate it my friend. Stay safe and model on! Johnny
This series was really helpful for this build. I'm in the process of doing it now. My question is did you have to place any weight in the front to keep it from possibility tilting backwards on the skids?
High Scott, yes I did weigh mine by placing the weight inside the ammo storage box that sits right behind the pilot seats. Good luck with your build my friend! Johnny
@@hillbillymodeling thank you. 👌
Great work and an inspiration for my future build. I just picked up this kit for a very reasonable price. Yes it has flaws. Yes it may not be 100% accurate. But if you are not a rivet counter and you enjoy building, I can see this being a decent project. I will definitely be referring to this series. Question, did you devise a plan to address the door gaps. Just curious what you would have done. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Hi Todd, thanks so much for the compliment of using my build as a reference, I really appreciate it my friend. As for the door gaps, I'm guessing your talking about the pilot and co-pilot doors, it can be a little risky, but just apply a little heat from a hairdryer and bend the top of the door in to match the fuselage profile. As far as the gaps around the doors go, I just left them alone. Also, I got the running light color wrong for the green, I used blue, but it should be green on the right side! Happy New Year!!!! Johnny
Thank you so much for doing this series, that huey is really well done!!! I just purchased the rubicon model huey. And I will be using most of your techniques that you did here. I was making a shopping list of colors I need to get as you were building this.😁 I do have a couple of questions. 1. While I am familiar and have used an airbrush in the past, whats a good PSI to start at? 2. That Sprue goo you made. Is it essential the extra material from the model kits that you just put into the glue and let dissolve? I appreciate your time and I will be checking out your other videos.
Hi Joseph, thanks so much for watching. Airbrushing is variable depending on the thickness of your paint and the size of the tip on your particular airbrush. With that said, in general you can safely use 8 - 12 psi without any issues. Higher psi for thick paints and the lower psi for thinner paints. Sprue goo is really useful, and since it's polystyrene plastic just like the model it makes for a wonderful filler. To make it I use Tamiya Extra Thin cement and the left-over sprue from any kit will do. just add small cut pieces to the bottle and let them dissolve. Since Tamiya Extra Thin is a solvent, it will turn the sprue pieces into that wonderful sprue goo. Just add more sprue to make it thicker and more extra thin if it gets too thick. Thanks for your kind comments and good luck with your build! Johnny
...have a question for you...what do you use to thin the craft paints that you spray?...I have only used Tamiya acrylics and thin them with the Tamiya thinner...craft paints to me are a completely different animal...thanks for your time...Mike
Hi Mike, great question! I use Vallejo Airbrush Thinner 71.161 to thin the water-based craft paints. Technically you can use tap water to thin the paint, but I haven't tried it myself. I also recommend straining the paint either before or when adding it to your airbrush. I have found there can be some pigment particles in craft paint that are larger and less uniform that might cause stoppage issues in my Neo airbrush. Thanks for commenting and watching my friend! Take care and model on. Johnny
Windows above pilots were tinted green to cut sun glare.
You are correct, thanks for watching.
Good job considering the age of the kit but you didn't tint the top glass green.
Hi Tim, thanks for watching. Your right, I didn't tint the top glass, it slipped my mind, we'll catch it next time I guess. Happy New Year!
I am a beginner this is one of my first builds before my tiger panzer
I hope yours wasn't as troublesome as mine was, lol.
Great Job! My only concern is that the Huey helicopter used in Vietnam NEVER USED this weapon system by US ARMY. Rockets launchers and miniguns or machine guns always installed back, Closer to the End of the cabin, under the door gunner seats. If you try to Find Pictures in internet You can find weapon systems like this model, only in RAAF ARMY helicopters, main of them with camo paint brown and green and not about the Vietnam era.
Again, the Gunship models was the B and C model with smaller cabin, not the D and H version. But this is a problem of many kits.
Hi and thanks for watching. Yes, you are right about there never being a gunship in the D and H versions for the US. I think there may have been an M version as well that was a gunship, but not sure. This kit is from the 1960's and accuracy wasn't the primary motivator back then, lol. Take care and enjoy the hobby. Johnny
@@hillbillymodeling agree 100%. Thanks
Starboard navigation lights should be green, not blue. The glazing of the cabin ceiling should not be transparent, but green.
Hi Alex, you are right, my mistake, I'm sorry if you didn't enjoy the build. Thanks for watching, take care and model on.
@@hillbillymodeling These are just bugs that can be easily fixed. I liked your video, the assembly and painting job was done neatly.
@@matpocob Thanks Alex, I really appreciate that my friend! Happy modeling!
Roof windows should be green tinted either with food coloring or sharpie!🤔
Jman
Yes, you are correct. Thanks for watching.
Lots of telling us what you're doing... very little of why you're doing what you're doing and how it works...
Thanks for watching. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the build, or that I didn't explain things very well, so what I can I help you with? Just let me know and I'll clear things up, no problem. Take care and mode on. Johnny
To many advertisers I’m out
Hi Rick, sorry that there are too many ads, I would actually prefer that there were no ads at all. But I understand that as a free site hosting service UA-cam has to make money somehow, otherwise I wouldn't have a platform, which is free for me to use, and you wouldn't have a free service to view content from. I know it is annoying to watch, I get annoyed as well. Take care and enjoy the hobby! Johnny
Hot damn uncle hillbilly,amazing work.
Thanks Rick, Happy New Year!
