I also recommend to use Mobil1 synthetic oil for 5w-30 oil (Motor Oil), you really don't need to use the Ariens brand unless you want to spend extra for the lower quality oil.
Nice straightforward video. New oil turns brown pretty quickly after the engine runs. I've been running 5W-30 synthetic for the last 2 winters with no problems here in Idaho.
I have read that it is better for engine longevity to use a non synthetic oil for the first 50 hours of operation for a brand new snowblower. This allows for proper break-in of the engine. I believe that's why Ariens oil is non synthetic. Makes sense.
Very nice. Thank you. I just changed the oil on my Deluxe 28 snow blower after watching your video. The part you show to use the extra wrench to make sure only the rear end is unscrewed was helpful. On mine it was hard to get the tip off, I applied some wd-40 after the job was done to make sure it screwed in easily.. Would be extremely useful if you could create another video showing how to clean the spark plugs and other maintenance on this model.
Appreciate the video, man. It was very informative and right to the point. Nothing more, nothing less. Seems very easy once someone walks you through the process, as you did. Thanks again! Oh and don’t forget your gloves next time lol
Caution! Everyone should refer to the owner's manual for their particular snowblower. My snowblower is the Deluxe 28 bought at Home Depot - it has the Ariens Snow Engine PGH45607. My manual says specifically to insert the dipstick into the filler neck and turn clockwise until fully seated, then remove the dipstick by turning it counterclockwise and check the oil level. It's important to do this properly in order not to under- fill/overfill the crankcase with motor oil.
Nice video. Finding the oil drain pipe was my biggest question. It's not in the manual. I do have a different Ariens model, and the choke wire is right below the pipe. I wanna thank the engineer who was the brain trust behind that design.
Thank you! Your video really helped me change my own oil. I have the side mounted filler cap dipstick and needed a special funnel but other than that your video really gave me the confidence to do it myself!
Jason, just looking at some of the comments and posts and I saw yours. On some Ariens snow blowers, I believe the oil drain pipe could be on the other side of wheel on frame. I saw a video on UA-cam that you need to take off the tire/wheel to have access to the drain pipe. My Ariens is like this video and is in back.
A couple of years ago I acquired an oil vacuum extractor. With multiple cars, power sports, power equipment, doing traditional oil changes DIY was becoming a royal pain in the backside. Now, the vacuum extractor drains everything with no need to play with the drain bolts or jack up the cars. The extractor makes the process a lot faster and a lot cleaner. For the cars, I'll change the oil filter every half dozen or so oil changes. Highly recommended.
Nice job, and presentation. Thank you. My beat up 724 appreciates it! I have the exact model 932046, with the Tecumseh engine, which is on the label to the rear of the unit. FYI for those with Tecumseh, replace the spark plug while you are at it folks with the Champion 104 - 5122, aka Champion RN4C which should be enough information to cross reference any brand of spark plug. Just replaced my 12 year-old plug with the above, and no more motor laboring, especially at idle when it revs up, then down. PS: Don't be like me. Replace plug at least every two seasons! ;)
A tip if you’re adding oil with out a funnel. Turn the bottle sideways to pour. It avoids the neck of the bottle so you don’t get the spurts over shooting the hole.
Had you thought about telling people which size wrench people should choose for removing the drain pipe nut? That would have been helpful. Mine uses a 17mm.
I've got the DeLuxe 28 SHO with the AX engine. The manual says to "Insert the dipstick into the filler neck and turn clockwise to fully seated. Then remove the dipstick by turning it counter-clockwise. Check the oil level shown on the dipstick (179/208/254cc only). Hmmm, that's odd. I noticed that the DeLuxe 28 SHO and DeLuxe 30 have a 306cc engine. But the engine manual is for the Ariens AX engines so I guess the procedure would be the same for all size engines. It doesn't mention any different procedure for the larger engines.
Question: Did you ever leave the oil cap open so air flow would help when draining oil out? Or did you leave oil cap on which would leave old oil in prior to new one?
Excellent video, thank you! I have an Ariens 624E, and shame on me, I have never changed the oil in the 8 years i've owned the machine! It still runs great, but this year, I made a vow to myself to change the oil. I now have to figure out what type of oil I need for the Tecumseh 6HP engine, since I lost the engine manual.
Just purchased a used Ariens 520, been sitting in the guy's garage for about a year or two without use. Was able to fire it up before purchasing, Any advice on getting old gas out?
You should be able to get a few more storms out of it. Keep an eye on the color of the oil, if it looks dark then change it. Good practice is to change the oil every season.
My nephew works in a small engine shop. He told me never to store my Ariens blower without oil in the engine. I usually change it in late October/early November. This way, if I break something, or need a part, I can get it before I need to use the blower. I do drain all the gas at the end of winter. I have an older Ariens with Tecumseh engine, live in Pennsylvania, store the unit in a detached, unheated garage. It's been working well for me for 25+ years, if I run it 2 times or 10 times a season.
What size wrenches did you use? Thought I saw 16mm on one, but it was too quick. Also, any tips for a plug that won't break loose and the entire pipe still turns? Tried WD40 and having a second person help and it's still stuck.
What does it mean if my snowblower is spraying oil out of the exhaust? I have the 30 inch Ariens similar to yours. Thanks in advance if you have any thoughts!
@@HomeOwnerRepair and I saw others who recommended removing the wheel (clip assembly) to access properly. Else, you could purchase tubing to guide oil around tire into container.
The wrenches used are a 12MM and a 16MM The ones used in this video and in most of the videos that we do are the GearWrench brand. We have them for sale in our Amazon store. Here is a link to them: amzn.to/33icMAg
Just get snow blower and start a second and turn off it’s self !!!! The fuel I used 95 just get it new first start . In Manual book says 89 fuel and more ,
the engine manual says you crank the oil cap completely down and then turn it off again to check it. you say you don't tighten it down. who is right? you or the book.it is on page 3 of the engine manual. also some say put the who quart in others say three quarters. again who is right?
You have to fully turn it, otherwise it doesn't really dip the way it should. Yeah, always screw it fully to test it. Also, after the oil change, let the engine run and recheck the level.
Maybe dealer had it wrong, I just watched a video for Ariens and they do state clearly to seat the dipstick fully to check the oil. Maybe the have old info?
Some engines, particularly Japanese brands, like Honda, specify not to seat the dipstick. With the Ariens engine though, you do have to seat the dipstick and then remove by turning counter-clockwise
HomeOwnerRepair I have an ariens 624, when I try clearing snow the machine propels forward about maybe 1 foot then just stops as if I am hitting dry pavement. Any idea why when I try letting the self propel do it's work it just doesn't? It usually keeps banging like I'm hitting high spots on the concrete

Mobil1 is the only way yo go right after initial breakin, totally agreed
Pennzoil synthetic 5w30 is good as well.
Pennzoil is much better than Mobil 1. In fact WalMart oil is better than Mobil 1. Several tests have proved it.@@Nick91768

I had to buy a longer funnel with a narrower end to fit into the oil port on my Ahrens 732.

You can try to spray a little penetrating oil on it to help loosen it up. We use PB Blaster all the time.

Is there a washer with the oil NUT..that is screwed off?
Didn't notice one unless in is inside the cap

You should always screw down the dip stick all the way when checking the oil. Not sure why you don't do that. Seems like a rookie mistake.
This is method is how the dealer recommends checking the oil on this particular machine.
Then the dealer is wrong. This is not the only engine in the world that has a special oil checking method.
I have a deluxe 28 and my owners manual says to seat the dipstick.
Thanks, hopefully I won't need to use it....wishful thinking.
