December 24th! Heater broke yesterday. 10 Degrees last night. I searched and searched until I found this video. After troubleshooting the inducer I found this capacitor video! It saved my family for $4.00! Replaced this piece and everything fired up again. Thank you!!
I want to personally thank you for the video. It saved me at least $500 according to one of my HVAC friends. It took me 5 minutes to remove the capacitor and 3 minutes to install the new one. Everything working beautifully.
Thanks! This vid helped me ensure that the sound I was hearing was what I thought it was. The capacitor cost $3.70. I had a friend pick it up on the way over. They were happy to help, and refused to accept my payment for the part, as I didn't charge them for lunch. Likely saved me $300-500 for a service call to get it fixed, and was solved before I had my morning coffee, rather than waiting a couple days in the heat for the repair.
This is exactly what my carrier furnace was doing. It started squeaking the day before it started humming. Ordered the capacitor on Amazon and in 2 days and $10 later my issue was fixed. Thanks so much!
Dude!!!! THANK YOU!!! My capacitor finally failed today, did a search on YT, found your vid, picked up the part at a local ACE Hardware and had everything back up in running in no time. Took an extra hour to clean the fan/blades/intake/etc... Super quiet on start up and works great! Thanks again! 😎
Nice, my local ACE didn't have a selection of Capacitors but I did see some location about 2 hours away did. Pretty handy having ACE stock common capacitor sizes 👍
Thank you so much! It's a weekend on a cold day just before Christmas. Heard this same noise from the basement, HVAC is dead. Watched your video, was able to determine the ace hardware near me had exactly 1 capacitor in stock and is about to close. Made it within 10 minutes of close. From finding the problem, to finding your video which led me to quickly diagnosing and finding the part I need, I had everything fixed within 60 minutes and $13 later after tax. If I had to do an emergency call on a holiday weekend you saved me many hundreds if not a thousand bucks in my area. Not to mention at least one cold night to get through if I wasn't able to resolve quickly. You're a savior!
Dude, if the $14 capacitor fixes my issue, I’m sending you $100. Still saving ~$185 off the first hour quote by local HVAC guy. Amazon delivers tomorrow. I will follow up. Your videos are great. I am a handyman who leans on you for the real deal. You never fail to bring good and cautionary advice. MUCH appreciated out here in the City by the Bay.
It didn’t, but I cleaned the contacts on the old capacitor while I was at it and tried again. The first time using it in months, it buzzed for about two minutes and then fired up. More info: I couldn’t find the same size capacitor although I found a bigger one with the same rating. Be prepared to remount your new one in a different bracket.
Thank you very much, the sound, troubleshooting and step by step was spot on. Also thanks for adding to check with Amazon, next day delivery and 20 minutes of work saved us from living a week with an 80degree interior home temp waiting for a ac company to come and service it.
Thank you for teaching people how to discharge them properly. Those things hurt when charged. Please exercise a lot of caution when messing around with these items.
Wow! I just bought my 7.5/370 for 6 dollars Canadian and solved my issue. I can’t thank you enough. I’m sending super virtual thanks and drinks in your general direction!!!!!
Thank You for your video. It was my problem, and my furnace and ac are working again. Do yourself a favor and keep an extra one on hand by the furnace for next time you need one. You will be glad you did !
Thank you for this video! This totally helped me fix my issue. First the capacitor and then I had to replace the blower motor. Not too hard, just had to wait for the parts
Thank you for this! So helpful to hear the sound, which is exactly what I’m hearing from mine. Looks like it’s DIY time! Your video was the most efficient and effective home improvement demo I’ve seen. Top shelf!
Really glad I found your video. Woke up this morning to a cold house, after some quick research/troubleshooting and a $10 part I now have the heat back up and running, thank you for helpin us all try and save some money. I appreciate it!
I have been trying to find a video breaking down this failure mode, I have a wall shaker AC with these exact symptoms. I was relieved to see your video in my search results, I have learned tons from your other videos so I knew this would likely be what I’m looking for. Did not disappoint, I’m no longer sweating my upcoming repair.
I’ve had this issue for months and could never find an answer. Thank you so much. It would always turn on the first time, but would never keep the temp regulated. Now it’s 55 in my house and I have 2 toddlers. So hopefully I can find a part soon.
Thanks so much Scott. Our furnace went out on a Saturday night this November. After watching a few videos on why the furnace ignited but the blower did spin I found your video. Thank goodness I did since I was ready to order and replace the blower motor. For less than 10 bucks I ordered the capacitor. It arrived in 2 days and was a 5 minute fix! Thanks again for all your videos.
Excellent video. Mine is currently making that noise on heat and air. Unfortunately, I'm not physically able to go into the attic and do it. At least I know what my HVAC guy should be talking to me about. Thank you.
Just had this issue happen to me. Went to youtube and your video popped up first. Thankfully. This was my exact issue and thanks to your guidance. I had it fixed in 2 days.
I thought my motor was out again; just installed a new one in 2021. The manufacture date was August 2020 on the capacitor that I purchased with the motor. This video did help me determine that the problem was the capacitor rather than the motor. Thank you!
Yesterday was July 4th and I turned on my A/C and the blower was not working. So early next morning I went out and bought a new capacitor and it fix the problem $6 part. You saved me a bunch of money. Thanks for the excellent video. 👍👍
Omg, I've been searching for a helpful video and this is it. My furnace is making this sound and I had no clue and other videos weren't helpful. Now this might be the reason why my furnace is making that sound, tysm!
Worked for me!!!! Took a while to find the capacitor, it was hidden on the back of the fan housing out of direct sight, luckily I saw two wires going back there and then felt around with my hand! LOL Was an old 1970s Bryant model. Changed the cap and the fan started right up without the drawn-out groan. Thanks again for this video!!!
Good info. My system is making the same noise and nothing is blowing through it so I figured it was the blower motor. I'll for sure try your fix first!
Spot on assistance with this video - Mine made exactly that sound, and $16 later plus a trip across town to get the part had my furnace working again on a cold day. Well done and thanks!
Thanks for this video. The walkthrough was very helpful especially the buzzing at the beginning indicating the same issue. Found the part at Ace for under $9. AC back on. Thank you.
I'll add mine to the pile--thanks for this! $30 Amazon rush delivery for the part, here it less than 3 days, a half-hour of work, saved me probably $400-600. I did notice, when it was buzzing, if I reached in and carefully gave the squirrel cage a spit, it would start up--no resistance in the motor itself. So, I knew it was capacitor. Warning: Careful if you do that you don't cut your finger off!!
I also have one of each (dual run and run capacitors) on my shelf ready to Install when needed. I like B.M.I. Capacitors because they are made in the Great USA, I’ve had bad luck with that Chinese junk, hope this helps. Thanks for making this video and PLEASE don’t forget to DISCHARGE the capacitor your removing !!!!!!!!!!!
Mine did that same humming sound and kept making that noise even when unit is off. Capacitor was bad like u said. Hoping that's it. I ordered the part thru Amazon. I have been out of the game being a Heating and air tech. This was a refresher. Thank u.
Yea, My thieving HVAC company, in my area, wanted $314.00 to replace my dual AC capacitor. I bought it for $7.20 and replaced it myself. Should be a law against this type of price gouging !.
Thanks a ton brother. That was the same sound I was hearing on my furnace. As you said I replaced the run capacitor and the motor started working. Thank you very much
Here's hoping! I just ordered the replacement capacitor from Amazon with next-day delivery for less than $8 with tax. Much better than a $300 service call and time off work to let the guy in.
Ok all done! Great easy fix thanks to you. 3min total.. Luckily I had a Granger's 1 mi away. Great and efficient Co. Service was good and the price $6.47 ! Not Bad. Thanks again! Time now for a cup of joe and some ABBA..
God bless you sir. Came home to my girlfriend saying there is a buzzing and the AC wasn’t working, found this video and it immediately helped. I am in no means a HVAC technician, but a 7 year old could do this job. Super simple, unfortunately had to go a day with AC because I had to order the capacitor online since no local stores had them, but it came the next day and BAM, im a certified HVAC technician now😎 jk, but thank you very much, keep up the great advice❤️
Thanks, great tutorial !" It's worthy and is good as a song by ABBA." 🙂 Today is Easter Sunday and I have been blessed with an easy to do job, thanks to you..! I have a Granger's nearby and also Home Depot claims to have them also..👍
Thanks for the video .Especially the discharge reminder. Mine quit when we are having 100 degree heat and its in the attic so its 120F up there and I'm old. Its a short term fix but I went up and banged by hand on the cover . It solved the problem but the system is 35 years old so at least a new capacitor is in order. Local HVAC place have them in stock for $10. Other tell tale sign is "cooling on" flashing on Honeywell thermostat just below actual temp display. Will flash when blower fan not acting on call for air.
thanks a lot for the video. I am wondering if I need to pay attention to positive or negative poles of the capacitor. Is there any difference between the poles of the capacitor?
Thank you, I was going to school for HVAC (epilepsy stopped that 😞) but I still have all my books and stuff- I had the same problem with my Rheem system, and I have replaced the capacitor (the first thing that came to mind, plus it was a cheap replacement...) and then I couldn't get the whole system to start. I started to dig through what could have been going wrong, the hum was going still going on- the circuit board... I don't have to replace the whole thing, or just which part (haven't found it yet... I still have to check it with my meter) Sorry this is so long ago of a question, but I'm completely lost on this.
The tech had already replaced the capacitor, and it's still making the humming noise. It seems to do it when the temperature drops. If I turn the unit off and turn back on when the temp outside is 42 it seems to work.
question we have a gas furnace also has central air alk winter we had use portavle heaters syopped working can a outlet swich plug in house that bad set furnace not to work ?
I had a bunch of power failures the past few days due to high wind storms and I guess my furnace went out when I was asleep and I woke up to my house freezing. I’ve trouble shooter it and it doing the same humming. The motor is new and I’m assuming the power going off and on so much may of messed the part your explaining in this video up. Thanks for the video and hopefully I can find one to see if that fixes my issue.
Question. My furnace is comeing on the ignitor is lighting and a flame is there but not getting any heat outta the registers im getting air but no heat there is a flame but its almost like its not fully cycleing and its not turning off at all only if you turn it down below set temp.
Great video. Just had this on a 12.5v capicitor measuring at 10. Fan would come on but unit would not really start. Hopefully the part I ordered should fix it.
Love your video. My issue is a constant bussing sound when the furnace is in the standby mode. Everything works fine otherwise. Please explain this constant bussing sound and possible solutions? Tom
Thanks for the info. Would it be possible to list the most common failure points of the HVAC system, winters coming and would like to stock some replacement parts if needed, thanks again for sharing.
I thought this was my problem, my unit would buzz just like in the video or it would turn on, run for a minute and then turn off and buzz. The old capcitator was jumping all around on the meter so I replaced it. Still doing the same thing. Fantastic video nonetheless!
@@xooq_ aw man, that was a while ago. I believe I did a Google search on my model heat pump and went from there. Also maybe got a number off the motor that was already on the unit.
Thanks for the help. I should have subscribed a long time ago. I have looked at some of your other videos. They are all excellent like this one. I will get a multimeter with capacitance, and verify the failure. I appreciate all of your help. I'll let you know what happens.
Great video thanks. My furnance works if I put in the thermostat the fan on manual I get hot air into my house however if I put the thermostat in auto the furnace on but I won’t get hot air in the house, any advise? I will appreciate a lot
I have a question. I’m decent with DIY and I rebuilt my AC unit. Now I’m having furnace problems. I have a Carrier Infinity system. Error message on thermostat says blower motor fault. I reboot power and sometimes it starts. When it tries to start, I hear a thud, like a shoe kicking it. I hear the thud multiple times. When it does start, the blower motor sounds fine. Starting is the issue so could be run capacitor but would that cause it to make a thud sound? I figured it was probably the motor. Hopefully I can get a quick answer because when my system reaches temp and shuts off, half the time it won’t start back up. Thanks for the video and the help!
Thank you! It worked. Saved a bunch of money because its the weekend. Been in the 90s and we’ve suffered for two days but worth the wait. Thanks again sir!
I have a brand new York furnace. It is running fine. When the furnace is idling but still plugged in, it makes the same humming noise you have. Does your new capacitor make any humming noise at all when the motor is not spinning? Thanks!
Thanks for the video. Could the issue also be a bad safety switch? I've had a similar issue the last few years where my home warranty company has to send someone out every few Winters because the humming noise will start up and you can hear the air flow start but then quickly stop a few times before it builds up speed and stays on

Very clear and high professional way to tell people how to fix this kind of problem. Thanks a lot!
You just saved me like $200. Thank you. Got the part off of Amazon, arrived today, changed it out, now my heat is working again.
Boom 👊
Good info. My system is making the same noise and nothing is blowing through it so I figured it was the blower motor. I'll for sure try your fix first!
My blower fan isnt blowing air into the room. You can feel the heat but no warm air blows. Furnace sound like my furnace.
Spot on assistance with this video - Mine made exactly that sound, and $16 later plus a trip across town to get the part had my furnace working again on a cold day. Well done and thanks!
thanks to this video my house is warm again, saving me cold nights but above all money! thanks and God bless!!!
Thanks for this video. The walkthrough was very helpful especially the buzzing at the beginning indicating the same issue. Found the part at Ace for under $9. AC back on. Thank you.

You are the Man ! Seeing this video really enhances my knowledge of the furnace of how it works...thanks
Yea, My thieving HVAC company, in my area, wanted $314.00 to replace my dual AC capacitor. I bought it for $7.20 and replaced it myself. Should be a law against this type of price gouging !.
Having just basic knowledge sometimes can save you so much
Omg serious. The serviceman wants $2000++ to replace my thermostat, board and labor cuz my furnace does not blow warm air into the room.
You pay for conveniet
Company's have huge expenses if they work for cheap they can go out of business fast
@@mh_360 No one said “work for cheap”. We’re saying stop price gouging (rapping) everyone. How about a fair price for what is, almost 5 minutes work ?
@@ItAintMeBabe99it’s not how long it takes to fix it’s how long it took us to learn. Fix it yourself or pay for a professional and do it right
Very clear, detailed, and helpful guide. Thank you!
Thanks for the video, my furnace was making the same sound. Glad I found it on time. A parts store had the part for only $8.00.
Thanks a ton brother.
That was the same sound I was hearing on my furnace. As you said I replaced the run capacitor and the motor started working.
Thank you very much
You bet!
Dude you saved me a bundle. Had same issue and happened to have a capacitor from the previous AC and just swapped it out. Thanks
Nice! Saving time and money is the name of the game 👍
Here's hoping! I just ordered the replacement capacitor from Amazon with next-day delivery for less than $8 with tax. Much better than a $300 service call and time off work to let the guy in.
You are so Right On ! Thank you guy, you are one of the rare one's. Have a great day, I will.

100% thank you for showing the issue while everyone else just yap about it.

It still makes a loud hum or buzz trying to get that motor up to speed. Wouldn't that motor need to be replaced at some point?

Hi....thanks for this! How do you know which "tab" to hook the connector onto? Does it matter?
you are a boss thank you same issue here and the squ cage spins freely.
If the ac blower cause humming it’s also cuase frozen your ac compressor line?
Great idea, I also have a question I don’t to much air power , is possible that can be the problem??
The tech had already replaced the capacitor, and it's still making the humming noise. It seems to do it when the temperature drops. If I turn the unit off and turn back on when the temp outside is 42 it seems to work.
Excellent video.
Nice and simple.
Definitely the same noise! Thank you 🙏🏻
question we have a gas furnace also has central air alk winter we had use portavle heaters syopped working can a outlet swich plug in house that bad set furnace not to work ?
Tom
I already change capacitor didn’t work, should I replace the motor ?
Sorry for the stupid question but I do not need to discharge the new capacitor right? Just the old one when taking it off?
Thanks for the info. Would it be possible to list the most common failure points of the HVAC system, winters coming and would like to stock some replacement parts if needed, thanks again for sharing.
Thanks Scott just save me a lot of money found part at Ace Hardware $9.99 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Incredibly helpful video! Thank you!!!
You bet!
and 2 sibce we have cenrral air so hot in house can we try see it works or that cause carbon monoxide
Could your thermostat cause for the return fan not to come on. It sends signal to turn on outside compressor, but return never turns on.
Thank you! Super helpful. Thanks for adding the sound.
I thought this was my problem, my unit would buzz just like in the video or it would turn on, run for a minute and then turn off and buzz. The old capcitator was jumping all around on the meter so I replaced it. Still doing the same thing. Fantastic video nonetheless!
Check if you are getting clean power to the capacitor/fan.
@@willarddickerson921 it was a bad blower fan. I replaced it and the capacitor and all is good. Saved about 1k which is even better.
@@jg-wb3vm how do you know which blower to get? are they standard
Good morning & Thank you.. my furnace is doing this.. The technician told me he would charge me $3000.00
I have a question.
Just ordered the part on amazon. Hope it fixes the issue. Should because its the exact same issue as yours.
Thank you!
Thanks!
Good video man!!! Thank you.
You bet!
Mine has a consistent humming, I'm thinking its the transformer after seeing this.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the video. Could the issue also be a bad safety switch? I've had a similar issue the last few years where my home warranty company has to send someone out every few Winters because the humming noise will start up and you can hear the air flow start but then quickly stop a few times before it builds up speed and stays on
Super clearly explained video. Thank you so much for sharing this knowledge!
What about if the buzzing is very low in volume and the buzzing happens even when the unit isn’t running?
Thanks for posting the video. It’s save me tons of money. Got mine fixed it myself.
YOURE THE MAN!!! Also great teacher! 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
should people cut off our gas valve as well or just the switch to replace capacitor
