  • Congratulations on taking The Leadership Challenge and the Leadership Practices Inventory (the LPI)! Let's break down what you are seeing and take notes on behaviors where you might want to take action or celebrate.
Grab a pen, paper, highlighter and your favorite drink and invest 13 minutes to better understand the LPI.
This video was created for leaders who have just received their Leadership Practices Inventory® (LPI) and who have not yet experienced The Leadership Challenge® Workshop (TLC). It's a starting point in better understanding your results.
As a reminder, the LPI is based on approximately 40 years of responses from millions across the globe. As Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner heard leaders personal best leadership stories, they found specific behaviors that resonated across the board. These 30 behaviors are built-in to the five practices: Model the Way®, Inspire a Shared Vision, Enable Others to Act, Challenge the Process, and Encourage the Heart.
While many of us believe these behaviors are frequently displayed to others, oftentimes they are not. It takes intention and deliberate practice (and a humble heart, willingness to share with others).
The goal is to have between 10-20 RESPONDENTS (up to 25). Less than 10 won't give you the feedback you need and deserve. To gather feedback, consider those who have seen you in action, perhaps on boards, associations, or other groups.
Speaking of FEEDBACK, some TLC Master Mentors recommend you engage in quarterly feedback with your manager, direct reports, colleagues and others. Deliberately schedule some time to discuss at least three things: 1. POSITIVE things you are doing that absolutely help others succeed or positively impact performance, 2. NEGATIVE things that really drag a person or a team down, things that should be changed, and 3. Asking what recognizable CHANGES have been seen in the past quarter related to the leadership behaviors? These questions will help you and others see more clearly so the next time you take the LPI, the ratings will be more of what you expect.
The GOAL is to become affirmed, awakened, to explore blind spots and begin to intentionally aim your talents for continual improvement. REMEMBER, we are all human, NONE of us are perfect and it takes self-awareness to provide exemplary leadership behaviors the majority of the time. Those of us associated with The Leadership Challenge® are here for you! You are not alone - regardless of the circumstance or level.
See you soon at The Leadership Challenge® : )
