In addition to having a horrible first outing with the booster boxes and dull caveman-Yugioh gameplay, I think what ultimately killed Speed Duel was poor marketing. I've only learned about the format in 2022, and I am THE target audience. I came across it accidentally, through a video on team APS's channel, which I don't even follow.
So I bought the Battle City Box and the Duel Academy Box (Midterm Paradox still hadn't been released at the time) and I loved them, and (more importantly) all of my friends who I had played Yugioh with as a kid loved them. We still get together every couple of weekends just to play Speed Duel and we're grown ass men all around 30, with jobs, wives, kids, etc. I remember a courier who delivered the Duelists of Shadows Boxes to me being super excited when he saw what it was I'd delivered, saying how he used to love playing Yugioh as a kid, and then visibly intrigued when I explained to him how the Speed Duel Box system works, without random cards and the old school vibe.
So the format and the product was clearly not marketed to us players who stopped playing (not effectively, at least). And who was it marketed to, you might be asking? Well, it was marketed at YCSs. That's right. The place where the sweatiest modern Yugioh players come to compete in modern Yugioh, because they like the game enough to want to compete in it. That's the people who this caveman Yugioh format was marketed to.
And what I find the most insane is how this would be stupid EVEN IF modern Yugioh players who attend YCSs wanted to switch to Speed Duel. These are players Konami already has in their pocket. If anything, they stand to lose money by converting players from an expensive format into a cheaper one. All this while there is a throng of disenfranchised ex-Yugioh players who were huge fans of the anime and loved the game growing up, but just gave up on it as it grew more convoluted-players who I know from first hand experience would buy your old school product provided it wasn't sold in booster boxes but the box format.
It's laughable how Konami marketed Speed Duels.

Honestly I agree with you 100%, I started playing it when it came out with my wife it was an easy format that literally anyone could learn easily. And with the complexity of the main card game speed duels was in my opinion a good way to get new players interested.

The only reason I didn't buy them until 2 weeks ago is because I was unsure if the cards themselves could be part of TCG/OCG, meaning I would be investing in cards that are nigh unplayable elsewhere and wasn't sure if Speed Duel was popular enough to be played in my area. That said, the one highlight of Speed Duel is that it brought many of the original OCG Normal monsters into English, including cards I've wanted to see for a while such as "Shadow Spectre", "Kairyu-Shin", "Neck Hunter" and "Big Insect", and if they continued to release them I'm sure we would have seen more and it seemed like the ONLY way to get these cards released other than OTS and Astral Packs.
Still, I got 1 box, played with friends, and they had genuine fun, so I bought more, and since the game is getting shut down, I'm more than happy to collect them as a finite collection, and they have drastically gone down in price so it doesn't break my wallet, I say it's fun enough for me to get invested, though it is a shame it's too late for me to go to any tournaments or go any further.

I loved Speed Duels. The Issue was we could not get a good following up here where I live to run proper tournaments. We even went as far as to allow non speed duel cards to be used, it just needed to exist in the card pool. (Example, Any copy of Vanilla Blue-eyes white dragon is legal). The reason for this was anyone was able to set a demo deck for free allowing them to have at least a skill card to use. But Players in my area are so rigid to change that they just want to play regular Yugioh and not stray from the path. They look at other formats like its a completely different games. Almost as if they are programmed to play one way and one way only.

I play Duel Links exclusively, but I had to intimately know Speed Duel rules to get better at that.
I can tell TCG made this an after thought. Redundant printing and competition with Duel Links was always my impression.
Duel Links has a handful of cards from the Tag Force video games and one of them actually became uniquely useful (Kiteroid). I guess the reason they don't print new cards is because they are legal in non-Speed format (as they rightfully should).
Some of the aforementioned Tag Force cards became legal cards with much stronger effects (Sherry 5Ds Noble Knight/Floral cards).
Speed Duel is such a fun format. I really dislike that Duel Links is being powercrept too hard with favoritism skills and some cards I just straight up dislike. That's also probably another reason.
They have very very low-key skills on paper SD but a lot of crazy interactions on Duel Links until they started imposing a ton of restrictions that's only feasible with a computer regulating.

I feel like Speed Duel was good for promotion of Reprints and giving players more options when it came to formats, I know most people will complain of fragmentation, but with proper promotion and treatment as a secondary format. The Box format was very good for casual players and more competitive players had the ability to simply play around with the cards included to make custom decks rather then having to gamble boosters and/or buy singles and considering these sets consisted of reprints I think thats fine, maybe Konami didn't but Speed Duel was a more casual format in every way. There are some good printings of fan favorite cards in high rarities and such so people who are collectors would have enjoyed them as well. They just had to slow roll releases of the products for each series just long enough to make the game not power creep too quickly. Now it seems like they are just going to push Time Wizard and stuff reprints everywhere they can. Also remember in the OCG speed duel is just an alternative format with no special cards

I thought Speed Duels were great, I actually was able to teach people the game via the first speed duel starter decks, and yeah very rocky start and I thought the following starter decks were odd, but once we got to the big boxes like Battle City and Gx I think they finally managed to make a dam near perfect product, aside from being fun casual games with friends it was a box that had effectively everything you need like a living card game, and I think what with the modern tcg just being a hellscape that is not easy to get into this was the perfect bridge to get new people into yugioh seeing as we'll never get Rush Duels.
Ultimately I think the death nail and just a problem with yugioh in general is they don't bother promoting or pushing the game and the franchise anymore, and when they do it's just DM era, usually just Battle City, case in point we got lime 2-3 Battle City boxes, no Duelist Kingdom box where you could introduce some wacky skills and unique format rules to invoke the feel of the anime, but alas back to Battle City again, and Ra forbid they ever do anything with the Virtual World, Waking the Dragon and Season 5 arcs, maybe not as popular but options.
At least with GX they went have a dedicated villian box, have some boxes to fill out some other niche characters, though kinda ticked off we never got the last gx box in the UK.
And ok Konami you say your running out of ideas why not turn to the other 4 animes, a 5ds box if they promoted it would sell, like a mini edison box but no :/ a zexal box with skills to make the character decks playable and balanced against the other boxes.
I think the Arc-V and Vrains boxes would be a bit too powerful but as self packaged mini formats it would still be great.
So yeah just a massive missed opponent that is largely due to Konami poorly managing yugioh in general and that's sad because Speed Duels were a genuinely fun, simpler yet still interesting way to get into yugioh which at the moment is something the game is sorely missing

    My list of mistakes
    1) Not letting people use their old cards. If you did let them use old cards you would've gotten a lot more people to just try it.
    2) No power cards. I think it was a mistake to avoid printing the power spell and traps. Monster Reborn, Mirror Force, etc. You can limit them all if you want. But I think they anime fans like game changing top decks.
    3) Making the decks small. Weird as it sounds I think the decks are too consistent. They feel like they do one play then they are done. They is no room for variety or tech cards.
    4) Marketing. Speed Duels was an anime fan format. And I don't think there was a good effort to let that group know they existed.
