    In the 1930's Einstein also said in an interview: “Being a Jew myself, perhaps I can understand and empathize with how black people feel as victims of discrimination”
    and began to use his influence as a famous scientist to speak against segregation in America.
    The diaries they mention here are dated back to the 1920s so during this decade he probably realized he was wrong like many people that are born or grow up in a racist/nationalistic environment. The fact that he changed his beliefs and decided to fight for what is right is something he should be applauded for, instead we're her judging him for "not being woke since birth".

    As a Chinese I always thought squatting looks unsightly. But to it's defense: still cleaner than sitting on the ground and have your clothing filthy and benches isn't always available and it's the most energy cost effective way. If there was something to sit on they will choose it over squatting. Also, 1920's was a filthy industrial era.
    Those few remarks in his journal isn't gonna make me think less of Einstein now. Context is important.

This was in the middle of the warlord era, when central law and order had broken down and China was in a chronic civil war between warlords. China at the time was reminiscent of Afghanistan today. When we see misery we implicitly assume they deserve it.

    He literally just wrote observations on the Chinese. If you were to go to Shanghai today and leave downtown, you would still see people squatting and bathing in barrels. A mix of culture and poverty makes those things happen. It's like if a Chinese journalist got criticized for saying that Americans don't take their shoes off when they go inside. The only remotely racist thing he said was the last part about worrying about the Chinese supplanting the west, but if you just came from the most advanced society in the world and saw poverty everywhere you went, why would you want the impoverished taking over the other society?

Maybe he changed his thoughts afterwards maybe not. Maybe he got annoyed by them during his travels who knows ? After all these videos are useless. They create hate for something so small. 'expect him to be consistent with his words' even I'm not consist with my words , who is ? Sometimes I realise that at certain times I was being a hypocrite. You should Idolise the person for his achievements not for his personality. Have a wonderfull day.

      Chinese is regarded as a race in Singapore regardless of where they came from, but in China, Chinese is the term for citizens of PRC who are divided among dozens of names that might be geographically segregated because of lineage. And what is the point of bringing this up now? I hate it when people dig up things like this about people who have passed. Have they not heard about not speaking ill of the dead? It's easy to say things like this and tarnish the name of people who are no longer able to defend themselves. I think bringing up things like this at this time serves no purpose what so ever. Surely, there are more newsworthy stories out there.

      Steven Brock Steven Brock First off, racism is never 'fine'. Secondly, I'm not the slightest bit outraged by this, and I found that quote thoroughly amusing. I think Einstein is a far more interesting figure because his contradictions and contributions have to be examined in context, and against a historical backdrop. This is about ethnocentricism, which most people as well as almost all western - and especially American - thinkers rewriting history are most assuredly guilty of, even today. I don't hold with any of this politically correct nonsense, but that doesn't mean we should pretend Einstein didn't beat his wife or that it's OK because some daft and supposedly well-meaning idiots want to sanctify him for his scientific intelligence decades after his death. The truth doesn't have to tarnish his reputation if you don't defend it, and you don't have to just because he's dead.

    Frankly, by these standards, many Trevor Noah stand-up sketches would be disturbingly offensive. I'm no Einstein lover but he had a long story of opposing discrimination, even if we have some demeaning notes in his journal, the same way Trevor is a spokesperson against many injustices, even if may of his jokes targeted "races" and nationalities.

    • @humourlessjester3584
      @humourlessjester3584 Рік тому +1

      There's a difference between laughing with the race and laughing at them, which really ties to the context and nuances of the delivery. If Einstein said that these people aren't afraid to be filthy because of how hard working they are then we can make a joke about that and make it race targetted but inoffensive, putting the word "filthy" into context. And that's what Trevor would do in his stand up, back up what might be considered stereotypes with context, specific people, and experiences. He listens to why they are the way they are instead of making shallow assumptions from one common trait for people to laugh at. Because that's what bullies would do, they would target your baggy clothes and call you poor. A friend would listen to the story about how you were in a rush to go to school and wore your big brother's clothes by accident and laugh about how silly you look. A friend can laugh with you and a bully will laugh at you and both don't have the same weight.

      Before the cultural revolution, Chinese are still one of the most educated and wealthy country in the world. That is why they make the silk and China which the west has no concept of making, that includes cannon and guns. I don't blame you as west don't often talk about the history of China, and rarely does the Chinese learn the Real History of China. Einstein visited Shanghai in 1923, that is pre revolution period, Shanghai was a free trade port, meaning it i was over run by westerner and are pretty discriminated by the Wealthy Chinese local.
