Shout out to the one thing not mentioned in the comments below: the quality of your photographic examples. Most street photography reviews come with good reviews boring shots but yours are excellent, really well done. And as a daily street photographer myself I agree a tilting rear screen is a must have feature.
Im pretty new to photography started with mobile then I remembered my mom bought a camera couple years back, dug it out and found out its a GX7 and am loving it to this day, yet to learn how to use it more. This video makes me feel blessed to start photography with the gx7
Love Love my GX7. It's my street shooter. And now mated with my Voigtlander 25 0.95 I am so so happy. It's also a body I use when shooting with legacy glass. Have adapters for M42, K-MOUNT, Canon FD, Olympus OM, Nikon F, Minolta MD. Now I collect older manual glass. Amazing how nuch older glass is out there for literally peanuts.
Boris. First of all, awesome review as always. I can't help but notice how beautifully shot and edited this was. You should consider making movies! Also, the humor is far more intelligent than what you usually get with other youtubers these days. In the future, it would be cool if you made a film analysis with this sort of structure. Just keep producing brother!
This was great! Entertaining and informative! I had the GX7 - finally realized I wasn't using it and moved onto the GX9. But when I had it, while it had its limitations, the GX7 was a great little all rounder for many different situations.
The GX7 is a very good choice for street, travel or EDC. Just as you went a model or two older the camera got cheaper. Buy a newer model and the features improve as well as they get more expensive. I started my GX journey with the 85. A lovely camera. As others have pointed out, the video improved. So did the IBIS. The only major flaw with the GX body line is the lack of microphone jac. Bought the GX9 and incremental improvements. A baby G9. Love both the GX85/9. The L monochrome and L monochrome D are my favorite B&W jpeg settings. I love the exposure compensation dial on the top plate on the GX9. Want to go cheaper? Yes, the GX7 is a winner. I don’t think this line of bodies sold very well. The GX line has been discontinued. Recently these bodies have become more expensive and harder to find. The GX85 sells for ~$450 and the GX9 for ~$500. I love these cameras so much I just bought back ups for both. That is how much I love these cameras. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
I've watched this video more than 6 times since it was released. I looked everywhere and waited for many holiday sales and seasons until I finally found myself buying a GX7 used. I like this video because it's so true and holds up today just li,e it did the day it was released.
Good video. The GX7 was my second MFT camera, and I think it's an excellent camera for still photography. It has the best ergonomics of any of the GX series. My only disappointment is mine always had a slight lag between hitting a control and seeing that parameter highlighted on the LCD ready to change. I love tilting LCDs for street photography because they are much more discreet that an LCD hanging off the side of the camera.
You hit the nail on the head with this video. Lumix make so many good cameras that are suited to street and you get so much more bang for your buck with their cameras. I've just bought the G80 which is weather sealed and has 5 axis IBIS and cannot wait for lockdown to end and get on the streets with it. I ditched full frame 2 years ago for MFTs and do not regret it in the slightest. Good video.
Superb video, you have skills. This is my favourite camera of all time, and when it launched it was the first time a bunch of key features had arrived in a compact Lumix body. The sensor was great, the front and rear dials were a significant upgrade over its predecessors, and the button layout was just right. And the grip! I think this is the most comfortable compact camera in the entire M43 line up. It's the reason I kept the 7 after buying (and then rejecting) the GX85 a few years ago. Pictures in good light were very similar, but the handling is much better on the 7. Mine is quite worn now, having been on lots of long distance off road cycling adventures with me. I'm tempted to get a spare. If the GX9 had the 7's grip I'd get one of those, but I doubt we'll see that return...
I have GX85 (older brother) and the tilt screen can be used the way you look down into a dual lens reflex meaning you can take shots without anyone realising you are looking at them. Re: the app, while there may be lag, it is perfect for simple framing when you want to check your composition before shooting.
love the GX7 . It is my first interchangeable lens camera. I created images with it which I cant believe today was done by it . I still own it , even though my main camera is the G9.
Hi Boris - I can't believe I stumbled across a video that sums up my current sentiments exactly about trying to find an affordable(cheap) second hand micro 4/3 camera on a budget for video - I'm not after 4k or the latest features but with a tight budget I'm finding these Lumix and Olympus 4/3 micros really hold their value. I definitely will check out the specs on the G7. But the most important part of any camera is the nut behind the camera - great video cheers
I didn't get the gx7 but just picked up the gF7 with the 12-32 for under $200. Amazing deal compared to anything else I could find. It's going to be the perfect camera for my daughter in college.
One thing that pull me back to consider this camera is the lack of auto iso in manual mode. Other than that, this camera is a steal for its price. But man, your presentation is a fresh breath on youtube, keep it up.
I enjoyed your video very much. I’ve got a gx7 and had it for years. The quality of the lenses are important but it’s the utility that I like. Yes over the years I’ve had loads of cameras including premium full frame and apsc but always arrive back at the gx7. Funny enough I’ve dropped it, misused it but still works. The only reason to change it is to by a gx9 which I’m currently arranging buy sell a couple of unused camera collecting dust. Thumps up for the video it is very good.

It was not quite as rugged as later cameras, but mine still works fine with its battle scars. The GX7 was brilliant when it was introduced compared to everything else. I can’t bear to pert with it.
I LOVE everything about this video. You hit all the right and salient points. Not to mention your street and environmental photographer is on point. I'm a Fujifilm shooter, I used to be a Panasonic LUMIX shooter before moving over to Fujifilm. Within the past month I've sold ALL of my Fujifilm professional gear, the X-H1 and X-E3, yes I consider that a great professional B camera and moved back to MFT. However, this time I moved to Olympus. The feature set on the O-MD E-M10 and E-M5 Mark II's make for the best lightweight kit anyone could have. I still own a Fujifilm camera for street photographer and the one I went with was the X-E2s which has been a delight to shoot with. The bottom line, the latest and greatest is not always the best to have. It's about having a kit that gets the job you're doing done. My current kit all cameras combined weighs 1/2 what my previous kit ways and the quality of the images are just as good if not better. Because now I don't rely on gear to get the job done. I rely on my eye, composition, and having a far better understanding of photography than what I had 7 years ago when I started down this rabbit hole. The GX7 is a fantastic camera and the GX9 is even better and 1/2 the cost of the Olympus Pen F.
Thank you so much for watching the video, I'm really happy that you enjoyed it. I agree with you wholeheartedly that it's much better to focus on improving your skills and using gear that works best for you rather than what is the latest most popular release or what has the most megapixels.
I agree that the GX9 is a great camera. I’ve looked at the Pen F. Definitely a lovely body. It sells for a premium over the GX9 so I will never buy one. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Love this video! However I ended up buying a used GX80\85 which is basically a GX7mkII as it was more readily available and even sold new still, same price or cheaper and more feature packed; IBIS works in video (4k 30fps btw, 100mbps) and is 5-axis for example. The external monitor also works normally.
It's also smaller! I've been considering swapping my GX7 (now my secondary camera) for a GX80 coz of the better IBIS and smaller size. Pairing it with the 20mm f1.7 is just gorgeous for low light street photography, too.
@@JadeMonkee @Simon Chester Can confirm that lense and camera combo are just too sexy! Just don't plan on shooting video with that lense. The autofocus performance in video is horrid. Btw I still have it and use it even though I also have a Sony A7III. Something about the small form factor and ergonomics as well as image quality makes it a great shooting experience! And thanks to the IBIS it's quite decent in low light if your subjects aren't moving too much. One thing to note is the built-in flash lost the ability to work as a wireless master for external flashes, in case you used to rely on that for the GX7.
@@JadeMonkeehonestly I miss you the larger size. I adore my GX80 but ergonomically the GX7 just feels nicer in your hand. I'm genuinely kind of gutted they never made a grip for it, just to add some bulk to make it easier to hold Having said that, I have tiny hands, I imagine people with normal hands might find it more comfortable.
Once I got to 2:14 it was over to me. Wide angle lens with manual focus scale. It could be attached to any camera, but manual focus scale is the main thing which does it for street photography. I could attach same lens to my E-PL1 and it will be awesome. But I went for 15/8 pancake :) .

I'm so happy i found this channel. I'm thinking about buying my first camera but I can't decide between the gx7 and the sony a6000. Both cameras are around the same price on ebay. I love the features that the gx7 has but the a6000 has a bigger sensor with a higher resolution (16 vs 24 megapixel). I plan on using this camera mainly for nature and architecture photography which means they should be good in low light situation. I know that sensor size should not matter for a beginner but I do plan on printing the pictures.
I think you should probably go with the a6000 as it is much better in low light and you'll likely want to use wider lenses to shoot architecture and getting a very wide field of view on the gx7 can be difficult due to the smaller sensor size.
I've got a GX9 which is the latest iteration of the Lumix GX series. It's a cheap camera too. Got it for 500 Euros last year: new. Very useful piece of gear for everyday photography.
Hello, I’m just getting started into photography and want to start doing street photography . I just purchased this camera and was wondering if there are any videos you would recommend for the right settings and presets for street photography . Thanks & loved the video ( this video is why i bought the GX7)
Thanks so much for watching the video, I'm really happy you decided to get the Gx7 and I hope it inspires you as much as it has me. I don't know of a specific video that explains the settings on the Gx7 but Lumix cameras released around that time basically all have the same menus and settings, so if you were to look at a video explaining the settings and functions of a Panasonic G7, GH4 or Gx85, you'll find that a lot of it applies to your camera as well. Some of the function buttons may be different and the video setting vary quite a bit from camera to camera, but the basics will largely be the same.
Thank you for this! I wanna learn good street photography in my business i paid a lot to professional photographers, I wanna save some $$ and do it myself after so much time I spend on watching other cameras reviews, this!! This is the one! You sold it good!
I absolutely agree. Unlike you I have owned the ricoh GR II, III & IV, aswel as the fujifilm x70 for street photography, which I bought and sold , but a after reading some reviews about panasonic system i decided to get the GX7 with 14-42mm kit lens, I bought for just £125, and man, this camera is just fully loaded with outstanding features & performance .
You pay your money and you take your choice. There are a huge number of cameras that will satisfy your needs. New or used. Have a look on eBay to see what's available at a price that suits you. Personally I never leave home without my fully charged Lumix DMC TZ20 in my pocket. Never let me down, takes great pictures and video if I want it.
The camera doesn’t matter. It’s the glass in front of it and the mushy human using it that counts. You can do awesome street photography with an iPhone if you get the right light. Nice video mate 👌🏻
Nice camera as I have owned this model. Good balnce of features, size, price! Also, since we are discussing a beginner camera doubtful users will be, "pushing colors in post" ?
1. I hope your alive. 2. Bro you hit each and every single box for an excellent video. I can't understand why UA-cam ain't got you at the top. 3. Your video convinced me to go get one 3 days ago. 4. Great video bro. 5. Come back and bust used camera videos... You can't be beat at this
I saw just skipping around the video to find the info i needed quickly... but then your jokes came. And i grabbed a cup og coffee and rewatched it from start til end... Lets just say i had to wipe coffee off my screen a few times
Another side note don't forget about the Pentax Q, nikon 1, they're great cameras that you can usually pick up pretty cheap there's also a certain little Samsung that shall not be named. And finally the Pentax M1 I think. I'm still on the hunt for the original GM 5 I think that's what it's called from lumix let's try to keep this a little bit of a secret okay. The lx5 and up can still hold up

@@boristakovskithank you so much for responding ,will look into that 👍
maaaan… I happy that I found you so early🙃
Well if you didn't get rid of your Ricoh I'll take one? 😁😁😁🤷🤷
I bought 2 months ago Fujifilm X-T3 for 960 $ new. Insane video possibilities, even when being "old" model to todays X-T4 and X-T5.
The XT3 is a great full featured body. The only shortcoming is the lack of IBIS.

I lovvvvved that camera!!! Omg I wish I would have kept it as well as my em10 mk ii.
Im tempted to buy them again.
Hit "like" about half a minute in... I did not regret it.
The camera doesn’t matter. It’s the glass in front of it and the mushy human using it that counts. You can do awesome street photography with an iPhone if you get the right light. Nice video mate 👌🏻
Wow, what a well done video. Thx!
Nice camera as I have owned this model. Good balnce of features, size, price! Also, since we are discussing a beginner camera doubtful users will be, "pushing colors in post" ?
I love Panasonic GX7 ❤️😍👏
This was dope, thanks 🙌🏽
Gx80 is great too
Best inexpensive combo is the Olympus PEN PL-8 + Lumix 14mm lens or use the 25mm Olympus.
I had the gx85 and gx9 for some reason I enjoyed the gx85 controls better you can put on a 14mm and your set. Or the laowa 10mm
Great little camera. I have the chrome version and I love it.
The lx5 and up can still hold up
To the point with all the pro's and con's - and not least with good humor 🙂 /me like.
