This is an excellent video. Here, I am getting the older refractor cards, coming thru the mail after an eBay sale, then finding out the cards sometimes have a residue film on them due to either soft sleeve or top loader long-term storage. Personally, I didn't like the way my cards ended up looking. I began to realize, that the newer cars today have plastic trim, plastic bumpers, plastic plastic, and more plastic. So I said to myself: Hey, I remember buying all of these glazes, polishes, and compounds that gently remove oxidation, dirt, and buildup off these plastic surfaces. I wondered if there was a way I could remove the oxidation from my plastic sports card, clean them up, and with a bit of luck, make them look just like a well polished wax job I get once a year at my local car wash..? Hmmm... so I grabbed a few cards, spent some time working on a method, and after several variations, I think I developed the method that does a great job on restoring the card's natural luster without having to do something underhanded like added a plastic coating as is mentioned in this video.
The logic: For years, we collectors are told to clean and use a micro cloth to remove anything that might affect a card's final grade. Normally, these hacks used to actually cut and trim our cards, and that is in no way far. I have a beautiful 03 Lebron James card that came from a seller, but upon close inspection, it's easy to see the card was a trimmed card. Pisses me off to no end. Personally, I have no problem removing storage film from a refractor because the card's original form is not adulterated. It's comparable to brushing one's teeth as compared to putting in a set of false teeth to appear as if a person has all of their original teeth and a great smile, lol.

One of the items I have used for years, is a electronic digital scale. Not for pre-grading a card, but detecting counterfeit vintage cards. IMO, counterfeiters can, and have, mastered the art of replicating the colors, printing, and lettering of vintage cards. They have not, however, been able to duplicate the weight of the original card stock. I use a small, pocket scale that is accurate to .01 gram. I use that as the "master" test for early 50s & 40s cards that I see. If the weight of the card is off over or under, usually under for counterfeits: "I am not interested". It can also detect a trimmed original card faster than sizing. The older, vintage cards mean more to me. I use it for cards & coins. Thanks!

YES! SMART ! I don't think the grading companies do this. Use test and measurement equipment for grading.

How much do small dimples on chrome cards take off for a grade ? Particularly modern

Ok question so how much do small Pits & Dimples affect card condition on say early chrome cards? I see some graded cards with small dimples that are 9's Mint so these kind of imperfections seem to me "in degree" large pit versus big pit kind of thing. Anymore on this end of the hobby I just would not buy an ungraded vintage card. Too much funny business on vintage. Like the 10X light.

Thanks for some valuable info. Maybe the recent spat of PSA lower grades I'm getting maybe justified since I don't have the black light...got the magnifier and lamp though.

Do you guys send in comic cards to be graded also?

If I altered the card by putting a crease in the cards I can get a grade. If I altered the card and made the card look better I get an Auth and it worth less than the creased card. The crease I can see, the improved corners I need a blacklight. Who decided on these grading rules, was it collectors or the companies that profit from grading cards? How did the hobby arrive at this rules for card conditions?

Hey guys, thank you so much for your helping content and what you do for the hobby but please invest a little bit in better cameratechnique and in for example a 2nd angle camera that we see what you see under that lense for example.
It‘s kind a hard for me to judge which cardissues are not a 10 but maybe a 9 and thats worthy to send in for gradingToo.
As i not only look for 10‘s but also 9‘s that would be great to see what affect how much which grade. I hope i explained myself as english is not my motherlanguage.
I think more detail shots from cards would help us a tonne!
Thank you guys and keep up the good work

  • @jimmeyer1205

Cards are worth ONLY what a purchaser is willing to pay. The grading of cards has become merely an unscientific method of estimating a perceived valuation. It is an affront to those of us collectors that derive enjoyment from the particular cards we hold as opposed to those in the business of turning a profit. And rest assured the grading companies will do whatever they can to inflate card values so as to maximize their bottom lines.
I have zero tolerance for those that alter cards. But, is there a difference when one of the grading companies charges much more for issuing a higher graded card even though the actual process is the same?

I appreciate their interest and effort. But they don't mention the MOST important aspect of PSA or beckett ..which is inconsistent grading. Examples have been shown on video of cards with similar condition and 2 different grades. Meaning the person who winds up grading could be having a super good day and be generous or a bad day and nit-pick

  • @AlexXanderMarketing
    @AlexXanderMarketing 2 роки тому +1

I see plenty of vintage cards with VISABLE soft corners, chipped edges and awful centering on the back that end up getting Gem 10 grades from PSA. There’s literally no rhyme or reason to a system that grades differently based on the year, the brand of card or the player ON the card. This is going to hurt the hobby in the long run.

so let me get this madness straight... magnify 10X under powerful light so we can expose dust and other minor imperfections not visible to the human eye to assess the eye appeal of a card and then assign a ridiculous value. cut the crap. the excessive dependence on grading is a disease upon this hobby and others like coin collecting.

Hello I could use some help I bought a Michael Jordan signature card on eBay there was a total of 42 bids and I won with $310 it did say that it could get authenticated right so it went to the authentication and it came back With a sticker reading that it cannot be authenticated signatures or other parties things of that nature but I'd wanted to get my money back but there was a no refund on the guy so I asked him if he would refund my money because I did research on some of the cards He has sold in the past are autographs of Patrick mahomes luka doncheck quan Berkeley I started off by reading one negative comment that he had but he had a lot of positive but I took that negative comment and I started seeing where he was selling a lot of personal autographs, So pretty much in my screwed I wrote him a message and he told me that I would have to send it in to get it graded or authenticated with PSA since they are the only ones who can authenticate signatures but I think it is a double standard because a lot of people could lose money on eBay like this thinking that it is guaranteed that it will go through the authentication process I did this with my Michael Jordan rookie 86 sticker but it came back authentic
