I love Broken Sword so much! Played the series so much growing up, was a very big influence on me. Extremely happy to see someone giving it this much attention. I've always loved the way Broken Sword has that classic Disney style exaggerated character movement but with that dark touch. Makes sense there's a Don Bluth connection. That car crash scene always stayed with me as a kid. I also just love the background art and music so much. It's so relaxing. And I love the way you fit the footage onto those CRT screens. That's the most convincing way I've ever seen that done. Feels really warm. Also, please tell me that is THE Neil Breen.
I love the retrospective/documentarian approach of this video. I'd love to see more things like this that examine the historical influences and context of the animation!
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy Yeah for about 6 months. I did go back to Dublin to work for Bluths in the end, but I'll always be grateful to Charles for the opportunity he gave me.

Re: 5:45, having motion of separate objects animated on 2s but alternating is a trick I've seen used by artists before and may have been deliberate here. Interweaving the animation like this produces the illusion of the movement being smoother than it actually is, since something changes every frame despite the animation being on twos.

Great video, great analysis. This is my favorite adventure game of all time and the graphics are a big reason why. I have the Hotel Ubu exterior as my phone wallpaper. My previous one was the yard of Villa de Vasconcellos. Beautiful stuff. People often complement it and ask what it is.

I love the broken sword games so much, I hope they make a 6th one in the future! By the way, there is a fan game called broken sword 2.5 which is set between 2 and 3 and its just as good
Great video! Glad to see a game like this that's often overlooked receive some recognition. I didn't get a chance to play this one until the early 2000s when ScummVM added support, and was quite impressed. I wasn't aware of the industry connections this game had. It's too late to fix this, but it seems like the aspect ratio of the captured footage is slightly off. It makes everyone look somewhat squished, though thankfully it's not as noticeable in the scenes without closeups.
I feel like The Adventures Of Willy Beamish deserves a mention here, talking about animation coming to adventure games. It came out in 1991 and had similar ambitions have film (or at least TV) quality presentation. And they did a surprisingly good job for a game that initially targeted *floppy disks* and was undoubtedly under insane space restrictions. But, of course, it wouldn't be until CD-ROM became standard that you'd really start getting that film-like animation quality.
I grew up after these kinds of games but they sure are neat. I love the older animation style. The strict models and methods used in most modern games don't quite have the same charm.
That was a great video. I am glad I found it. I am also a fan of hand-drawing animation specially found in japanese animation (of the 80's and 90's). Great channel!
I didn’t really know what you were talking about, but I thought I’d give this video a few minutes and then leave. Before I knew it, I was at the seven minute mark, so I just stayed all the way. Nice video 👍
I love the Broken Sword games. Helped Kickstart the 5th one (which returned to the original art style after a messy foray into 3D) and looking forward to the 6th in 2024. So many good scenes and lots of very expressive animation, but I think the one I remember best is the first one in the PS1 demo of Broken Sword 2, where George is sneaking around the security hut of a dockyard and ends up setting fire to the hut and dunking the guard dog in the water before scrambling over the fence. The brief cut scene after has some very funny doggy paddling animation 😂
That was a nice nostalgia trip. I loved the first two games back in the day and had a lot of fun with them. I was also quite happy to see them make a new one a couple of years ago.
I remember interviewing Tony Warriner in an article about this because the Official Playstation magazine did mention something about how Disney was involved with the development of the original game, but Tony denied this.

It’s a shame that many people aren’t interested in point and click games anymore. Sure, the puzzles can be moon logic-y, but the stories and animations are really great. I haven't heard this game but now that it's here on ur channel I'm looking it up asap. The first few minutes gave me such nostalgia even though I don't play many games as a kid ❤
It was definitely cool to see a dramatic point and click at the time and especially with a Disney-ish / Don Bluth styled art-style in which is mostly associated with happy children movies. It's a contrarian in the clothes of a point and click and that's what makes it so unique. It also fits in with Dragons Lair and thus it does not seem like a questionable art choice and may give players of Dragons Lair back from the day some nostalgia and this similarity contrasts the uniqueness of the rest of the game in which fits the contrarian theme.
Was trying to think of games that my girlfriend may be interested in playing. I put this on and she loved it. Spent a great week of evenings together. It's been on of my favourites since I was a kid
5:40: I recall a Mother's Basement video about one of the Konosuba OPs where Geoff points out that alternating frames like that means _something's_ changing every frame, giving the scene as a whole some of the liveliness of animating on ones with half the frames. That alone is reason enough to alternate frames when you can.

Well, who influenced Don Bluth?
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy At that point, while you can't deny there is influence, it is several layers removed, and with new layers added. Bluth's house style does differ from Disney's in important ways, and these folks clearly have their own style on top of that. :)
Which ways does Bluth's differ? I tried to study and ask for advice from other animators but couldn't settle in a particular thing which distinguishes them. Could you try to list them?
I didn't play the game but make a video about it. People are getting lazier every day
Do you think that *I* haven't played Broken Sword but have made a video about it? 🤔
Because I have _no_ idea where you've got that from.
