    Great video, I bought one from a pawn shop in 1989 and used it for around 10 years before giving it to a young soldier who worked for me. Now I'm a bit older and just bought a great example off of ebay. Time to get these old legs back into action! lol Great vid. Thanks.

      Thanks Rustymac. My old Coleman Peak is my go to pack. Especially in winter when I attach my old ALICE pack to it. Have you seen my video of that setup?

    I had a Peak 1 when I was in Cubs in the 70's. I loved it. Light. Indestructible. Didn't realize it would still be a useful pack today or I would not have given it away.

      And they are still popular with those of us that prefer the external frame packs. Hunters like them and the Gregory external frame, (just found one of those at a thrift store) because of their load carrying capacity. I've got a review of the Gregory frame posted too if you want to check that out.

    They are great little packs. I do not know why they stopped making then. Everybody went to internal frames or ultra lightweight packs I guess. I fitted a friend's son with one. His first pack. He liked the was it felt like a hybrid between an internal and external pack. I like the way the internal pack hugs you and allows a lot better balance in movement. However...in the supper you do nothing but sweat and be hot on the trail. External frames give you that better air flow. The peak1 packs were the best of both worlds.

      Thanks for the comment Jim K. Yeah, there seems to be a growing underground movement of people that just love these packs. I've seen where people have adapted them to military backpacks, used them for hauling deer carcasses out of the woods, all sorts of stuff.

    Some info from research about the Coleman Peak 1 backpack: it used a sturdy plastic (possibly with Kevlar) frame called the "Ram-Flex" when manufactured by Coleman. Someone on the Bushcraft forums discovered that the original patent goes back to 1974! patents.google.com/patent/US3938718
    Later, Outdoor Products was assigned the design and used it as their EnduroFlex platform; of which there was a rounder revision (EnduroFlex-Plus). They continued to make external packs based on the frame under the "Dragonfly" and "Firefly" names until this past decade. See, for example: www.amazon.com/Outdoor-Products-Dragonfly-External-Backpack/dp/B0007Q3K5E
    BassPro also apparently used the EnduroFlex frame for some of their backpacks
    The rucksack and straps are compatible with the original Ram-Flex, so they can be swapped around.
    Before the MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) packs were designed for use by the military, the EnduroFlex was considered as a prototype design because of its modularity. As many have discovered, the MOLLE/MOLLE 2 shoulder harness and hip belt attachments are interchangeable onto the original Coleman frame, offering a more modern upgrade.

      What impresses me the most is the durability of these packs. My son abuses his something awful and it's never broken.

      Coleman Peak 1 (large) would probably work well for that. I can't find the link, but there was a forum where someone was using one when he went deer hunting.

    I just bought one of these packs, I have gait and back issues that I have to compensate for. Need to get the weight on my hips, and off shoulders, without throwing off my balance.

    • @amputeeoutdoors
      @amputeeoutdoors  4 роки тому +1

      Let me know if the pack helps with that. I'm a little of balance due to my prosthetic leg sometimes and have found the external frame helps with that.

      @@amputeeoutdoors the pack is on its way, hopefully. Online purchase, I'm mainly buying for frame, might swap out hip belt somehow, will see when I get hands on. Previous pack was internal, comfortable until it wasn't due to my injuries.

      @@Liam__G The nice thing with the Coleman packs is that it's easy to adapt other parts to them. My "new" hip belt is taken from a baby carrying backpack I got from a thrift store. Very padded and comfy. :)

      @@amputeeoutdoors ok, so the pack was cancelled, at least I was refunded.... on to my search for another. I understand the outdoor products( dragonfly, or firefly?) external frame backpacks used the same frame on most of theirs, so I might try that search too.

    What got you interested in reviewing a peak? My scout has one that he used when I was his age, long ago. Are they still being made?

    • @amputeeoutdoors
      @amputeeoutdoors  2 роки тому

      Mike, they're not being made anymore, but you can still find them on eBay, Craigslist, and other online second hand retailers. I like that it's modular. I've attached different belts, shoulder straps and backpacks to the frame. It's light weight, rigid but with just enough flex to accommodate motion. I can strap near about anything to it with straps, bungie cords or paracord. And it keeps the mass of the pack off my back so I have a little air gap there.
