I was driving to work in Tampa, FL, back in the summer of 1994 when a heard this song for the first time. I had to stop the car to pay attention to this musical jewel. When I got to the office I called the station to find out who was singing... they gave me the info and that very same day I went to purchase Islands. Since then, I listened to this album thousands of times & it always, always, makes me happy :)
I had a similar experience to that of the poster. I was on a trip, staying on the Left Bank in Paris. Early in the morning deliveries of fresh foods arrive for the shops and cafés. The driver of one truck was playing a haunting melody. I happened to have a manuscript book with me so I jotted the melody down. About two years later I was playing in a group with a guitar player who loved ( and recommended that I listen to) African music. I went to a place called House of Musical Traditions and asked the clerk for a recommendation. I bought what he had recommended and put it in the cassette player on the way back home. BOOM! There was the song from that early morning in Paris: Baaba Maal and Manjour Seck: Lam Tooro from their album Djam Leelii. It had found me! By the way, I'm writing this because of my love of Tarika - this was the first CD of theirs that I bought. I still listen to it fairly often.
Baaba Maal and Manjour Seck - Lam Tooro Produced by Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull. He found the long lost Master tapes and even though not of the greatest recording quality, He published the LP. The rest is history. I am on Your wagon Ted.
Thank you so much for the info! We have the same Islands album but lost the CD case. Now we can check out the artists, the song titles and their other songs.
I have this album and it is one of the best Putumayo albums ever. This is my favourite track from the album, followed closely by Me Ki Sa Oule by Kali.

I have always loved this song since I first heard it. Thanks for sharing this.
Hanitra is a real stunner. As is the musicianship of this wonderful band.
