You should watch Dark City! It's a totally underrated film in a similar vein as The Truman Show, but with way more sci-fi.

"Meryl is being paid to sleep with in." yes, that's called a pr0n actress. lol it absolutely is a dystopic movie. it was also an early warning movie about the dangers of the CIA and the internet and government controlled media. that's all you need to make a real truman show of the globe.
14:34, Easy to miss detail, but the sun is much further away than the moon and therefore should be casting light from behind it. Yet Truman's fake sky scene has the moon fully illuminated from the front.

your right. its a horror film disguised as a comedy. wanna see another futuristic horror film based upon today's reality? WATCH "Colossus: The Forbin Project" (1970) which warned us the dangers of computerization, digitization, automation and A. I. and its warning were also completely ignored.

The unintended consequence of bringing Truman’s “DAD” Kirk back was he no longer feared water.
They didn't bring his dad back. His "dad" smuggled himself into the set.

@@212mochaman He was on a show for years: he probably knew a lot of the actors, so him having an accomplice is a realistic possibility, and probably the way he managed to overcome the security (that plus a good disguise, they probably need a lot of extra that come and go and maybe after years they got complacent about thorough background checks about said extras.)

This line always sticks out to me. Even if we end up in a situation like the Truman Show, our mind and imagination will always be our last bastion of freedom.
With how technology progress, "a camera" inside our head is not an impossible concept for the future.
Indeed. It reminds me of the scene early on in the book 1984 when Winston writes down his first thoughts of freedom in a small corner of his apartment that can't be seen with the camera. This only comes at the end of seven soul crushing chapters describing how dystopian the world of 1984 is.

Mary, this came out before reality TV really took off. The idea that audiences would watch somebody just going about their daily routine (or watching them sleep on twitch) was a crazy concept. Turned out to not be that crazy.

I thought Big Brother was first but you are right. Truman show was 1998 and the first Big Brother show was in the Netherlands in 1999. And then all hell broke loose. Now we are watching people watching movies, we watch people playing games and even watch people watching people playing games.
Still crazy after all these years. People who blog their life are setting themselves up in their own “Truman Show”.
It wasn't a crazy concept. It was expensive and the bandwidth issues made it low quality. People were waiting for it to have more barriers removed.
The Truman Show was released in 1998, and I know people had set up webcams for their daily activities just before and after the movie came out.
They had many personal cam sites and some businesses would setup webcams in their studios. People sleeping, shopping, just hanging out, or actual camgirl shows. One hoax was a site about streaming a relationship's "Our First Time," but it was actually just an adult video company production.
A webcam was in the first American Pie movie in 1999. A webcam being left on was the topic of an episode of Moesha in 2000. Dead Like Me had a 2003 Season 1 episode where George sleeps over at her boss's house & the whole house is live-streaming 24/7 for people to watch. The animated Daddy DJ music video from 1999 has a webcam the kid uses to call his dad at work.
Aerrosmith did an entire webcast concert in 1998. David Bowie did one. PBS Nova had web cameras set up for viewing mountain ranges in 1998, with satellite phones.
The host of one show said it must have cost a fortune for the ISP to relay a webcast on a satellite phone & the person on-location joked "rest assured, we're sending you the charges."
The idea has been around.
There are deleted scenes that shows the emotional turmoil of the best friend guy. He was a child actor who grew up with Truman, the show was just an much his entire life as it was Truman’s. Even though it was a job, he saw Truman as the closest thing he had to a friend. There was a script rehearsal scene where he confronted Christoff because he was planning to kill off Truman and refocus the show on his yet-conceived child. Then in the manhunt scene, he actually found Truman and silently let him go.

The attention to detail is amazing. Watch Marlon when he's refilling the vending machine while talking to Truman at the same time. When Truman isn't looking, he removes the same candy he just refilled, then keeps putting it back.
The bit that haunts me the most is his "best friend" saying "the last thing I would ever do, is lie to you".
I don't think I ever got before, that Lauren was just looking at a random book in the library, not actually studying Japanese.
Someone posted on another reaction to this movie, that there was a cut story or background information that the guy playing the part of his best friend, having been his best friend since they were kids, had left for awhile, as he had left the show due to a breakdown or drug problems from being so close to him and lying to him all the time. The movie is very dark for as fun and funny as it is.
It took me until today to realize that his name is literally "True Man", the one man who is living a true life while everyone else lives a lie

Yes, just one those little details not many notice. This movie has so many layers. It’s a Jesus story, born not of this “world”. His mother did not birth him, but his father (corporation) gave him life. He’s the only one who realizes everything is fake even the sun and the moon. He starts believing in himself and knows his world is not real. At the end, where his boat ends against the wall of the dome, he gets out and starts walking towards the stairs. It’s made to look like he’s walking on water. This movie also caters to conspiracy theorists who believe we all live under a dome, and the arctic wall in Antarctica is where it ends.
And his last name is simply the place where it is being filmed.

Yeah, there was a deleted scene with Cristof explaining that in a meeting with the cast members. If it had happened, they would have created a 2nd channel to follow Truman's offspring.
One of my favorite details that everybody seems to miss is the "travel agent" comes in with a makeup bib still on her chest because they never expected him to actually go there, so she had to be rushed on set.
My favorite movie of all time, seen it maybe 10 times, haven’t noticed that man, shows how detailed the movie is.
... you know what hit me all the time about this movie? The end phrase of the guard dude. After all that, after all the emotions, it's just a tv program.
Yeah, the "what else is on?" is maybe the strongest line of the movie. For truman is the beggining of his life, for chistof the end of his but for the rest is just a tv show.

I think that even more on a literal perspective, it being on tv just doesn't make it real for them either. For all they know (which is what I assume is the truth) even that ending of truman leaving, could have been staged, which would make it even more of a tv program than all others.
Marlon actually did like Truman. The constant drinking was actually because he was becoming an alcoholic because of how bad he feels about lying to Truman his entire life. His wife was in it for the money/fame. The mother took it as a great acting opportunity.
I'd love to see a sequel about the largest lawsuits in the history of the world.

And criminal trials as well. Cristof needs to go to prison, and probably most of the producers of the show as well. And every sponsor of the show owes Truman a lot of money. And where was law enforcement this whole time? Serious crimes against the US Constitution are being violated and broadcast on TV!

I went to Fiji for my honeymoon because of this movie. Place was absolutely beautiful, regret nothing.
I love the very last shot where the parking garage workers say "Eh, what else is on?", "Wheres the TV guide?". Showing how brainless and much we as a society absorb content. The second something is over, we are bored and must find something else to watch and fill our lives with. Kinda of a sad thing to think about.
The ending is kind of brilliant. They way it ends so suddenly feels like a let down, but it makes sense because his whole life was watched by everyone, but once he leaves the dome no one gets to watch him anymore, not even us.
This and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind are Jim Carrey masterpieces. Absolutely love both movies.

Loved that you really understood the depth of this film. Almost everyone including the audience were villains, contributes or enablers to Truman's abuse. On a side note, I almost hypnotized myself on your bedcovers.
Don't forget the part where the movie is an allegory for the (self)awakening process.
He is the *True Man* - It's the *True Man Show*
I'm pretty sure the last scene in the movie is supposed to be evocative of the types of images you get when you google "Steps of freemasonry".
Beyond that, the ending definitely acts as a definite meta-commentary about real world media.
Truman leaves, and the natural thought of you as part of the audience of the movie is "But what happens to Truman in the real world?" but we don't get to find out because we no longer have that privilege.
This is such an iconic movie, way ahead of it’s time. I have that signature catchphrase on my voicemail, it’s so triumphant and just a satisfactory ending incomparable to anything else.

Another great Andrew Niccol movie, that he wrote and directed, is Gattaca. It stars Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't seen it.

Gattaca is a top 5 SF show for me. Glorious film.
I think the world was ok with it while Truman was oblivious, but once he was putting it together, they wanted him to succeed and get out

And to scare you even more there are fiber optic cameras that are so small that they are the size of a pinhole.
The scene where he starts to realize it’s all fake and is looking around at everyone in the town is one of my favorite scenes of all time
If he was raised in that environment, he would never notice anything. If everything was on a loop since he was born, it would be normal. They controlled everything he saw or read. He would have no need to question it.
I don't think Fiji would ever have worked.. getting him out of the dome and back into it without him noticing would be a challenge.
Along with getting him out of that protected shell would make it possible for too many intrusions from the public. Even on the protected set inside the dome they had several close calls.
No no no, more than likely they'd stage the whole thing. Make him think he got on an airplane and went there, but it's just another stage. I think that's why everyone kept saying "wait a month", that's so they'd have time to set up whatever or wherever he wants to go as a stage.
I think the actor who says "He's going to drown and he doesn't even care." is such a good actor. The way he refuses and just says "No." is exactly how the audience should be feeling. It's such a small part of the movie but oh my god, It's so good.
Love Paul Giamatti, he is soo good👐
The scene where he has to go through the storm and is willing to die to do it, if you want to live the life you want you have to seize it and push through whatever fear holds you back. The whole show his petrifying fear of the water was the demon he most had to overcome.

I also love this one quote from Truman when he said “you don’t have a camera in my head”. That was a nice comeback before the grand finale.

If I recalled, the proposed sequel is another person whose father was the fake friend for Truman.
A great philosophical masterpiece. It asks you so many questions about how you know what you think you know. The lies we are told by religious leaders, philosophers, journalists and politicians are gaslighting us all.
I remember when this movie came out. 1998 was also the time when webcams became popular. My generation were installing webcams and running them 24 hours a day for the world to watch. You could go into chatrooms and just start searching for webcam channels. Truman Show played on he fear of what if you didn't know your life was being filmed. Then the next year we got the Matrix which certainly did not help calm those fears.
And then we got The Patriot Act just 3 years later because of 9/11 and everybody GLEEFULLY embraced that shit!
This movie and EDTV came out at about the same time. Where this movie has a protagonist who is unaware that he is in a reality TV show, in EDTV the protagonist gets drafted into a situation where his life is basically made into a reality TV show. I think The Truman Show is the more interesting of the two, but EDTV sort of predicted the rise of Reality TV as we know it now. EDTV stars Mathew McConaughey as the protagonist.

The friend character was a kid when he started, so his parents essentially forced him into a lifetime contract of lying to his best friend. Behind the Scenes has said that the reason he was out of school and the time he was off "hauling chickens for Kaiser" were him in rehab, he developed a drug addiction to cope with his guilt of his role in th Truman show. There are also deleted scenes that show the character cared probably more than anyone on he show about Truman, I know the deleted scenes are not Canon, but they show a better picture of how the director saw the best friend character.
I feel like the most awful string of words in this is "...the first person ever to be adopted by a corporation"

I see this movie as a warning to "influence's", not to put themselves into their own (self made) prisons for an audience. Very important to live a "normal" life outside of the influence environment, lest they become Trumans without realizing it.
Ngl, "The Moon is a Searchlight" sounds like a terrifying short horror story
It's the moment when Truman's "best friend" found his long-lost father for him that confirmed to Truman that *everyone* is in on it. That his life and everyone in it is and has been lying to him his whole life. That's why he is crying when he hugged his "dad."

This is a short story by Philip dick ,the same of blade runner and describes our habitat as the endless flat kingdom that it is in reality and not the nonsense of spinning sphere lost in the universe

You're right that it's a dystopian story. It's also a psychological horror when you think about it, how they manipulated him, deliberately caused him trauma to induce fear & keep him prisoner. He was literally a slave, only instead of doing hard labor for his master he was star of a show that made his master millions. They owned his body. Took his free will & constitutional rights away. He had no real love from anyone. They controlled nearly every moment of his life & constantly gaslit him for "entertainment" of others.

I believe the guy playing Truman's dad came to love him like a real son, so he snuck into the set, and they later purposely brought him back to try to calm Truman
This was one of the first “dramatic” roles I saw from Jim Carrey, and also the first film we watched in my senior level English/Film Analysis course. It’s still one of my top 5 films to this day.
The way ads are aimed for every individual person nowadays reminds me a lot of the truman show. People listen and watch you and the things you are interested in
IIRC, During the interview with Christoff he explains that the actors and extras all live on set. They are completely provided for and live their own lives behind closed doors.
This movie has an eerie / unusual "too perfect" of a world feel to it, which is obviously revealed to be a TV set. There's another underrated gem called Pleasantville from about 1997, which has a similar feel, but with a completely different concept. It's modern day teenagers trapped in a 50's sitcom.
The writer, Andrew Niccol wrote and directed GATTACA, Lord of War and S1m0n3 and they too are masterpieces in my book.
They just did a great job in terrifying him from traveling with the boat scene and the lightning in the sky and the plane that he just never went anywhere until the end.
This film BLEW MY MIND when I saw it! So many layers!

This movie actually got 3 well deserved Oscar nominations (Original Screenplay, Supporting Actor (Ed Harris), and Director (Peter Weir)).
FYI: Peter Weir also directed WITNESS (1985), MASTER AND COMMANDER (2003), and DEAD POETS SOCIETY (1989) and received an Honorary Oscar last year.

Not only is this movie a masterpiece, it proved Jim Carrey is just as good of a dramatic actor as a comedic one.

I can rewatch this movie over and o ver - it is my favorite Jim Carrey movie. This movie came out before reality TV took over the airwaves and people understood that there might be a camera somewhere pointed in their direction.

Truman didn't have access to cell phones (with cameras) and computers. And no one used them around him. Those types of things would be considered science fiction to him.
Theres a deleted scene showing how truly dark this movie is. The main cast and Christof are talking about Truman having a kid and that kid becoming the focus after Truman dies.

Apparently there was a cut bit where when they were searching for him Marlon spotted him but decided to say nothing and continue moving, I guess they cut that to make us wonder where he was more
It often gets overlooked in Carreys filmography but I would suggest :The Majestic".
The reason it’s overlooked is because it was a flop.

The reason why the Majestic was a flop was because it was boring as hell. I agree that it had a good story and plot but the movie was just slow
Truman’s wife was paid $10000 every time she slept with him but was actually struggling with the upcoming plot line of them having a child together. The actor who played his best friend was also a drug addict who was struggling with keeping the secrets from Truman. These plot lines were not in the final movie but some of them are in deleted scenes that came with the dvd release IIRC

There is a cut scene that would have made Marlon into more of a sympathetic character. It's when the whole town is looking for him. Marlon actually finds Truman, disguised as a homeless man. Truman looks at him, scared. Marlon looks at Truman for a few moments, then turns around and yells: "Truman? Where are you?!", letting Truman escape.
There are also theories that when Marlon says to Truman "If everybody's in on it, then _I'd_ have to be in on it too", that's not something that Christoph told him to say. That's him giving Truman a hint that he IS in on it, and that's what causes Truman to finally have the courage to escape. It fits well with that scene I described above, and while I get why it was cut, it was a bit of a waste.

The fact that Jim wasn’t nominated for an Oscar for this is a travesty. The nominees were all deserving but… for him to do this after a career of all comedy, and the character to endure after two decades, this performance is a masterpiece.
Truman Show always felt like a really funny Horror Movie to me and it always freaked me out.

There are some really very subtle clues into what's going on. In one scene, Truman's wife has a bottle of D vitamins. Vitamin D is what you get from sunlight, and since they're all indoors 24 hours a day, they need Vitamin D to stay healthy. Or in the scene when Truman is with his friend while he's stocking vending machines, they didn't expect him to be there, so the "friend" didn't have enough candy. If you watch the scene when Truman turns away, the other guy reaches in and pulls out some of the candy bars from the machine so he can restock them while Truman is watching.
I think this movie can mean different things for different generations. I saw it in the theater at 18 during the Carey movie rush and I appreciate it a lot more as I got older.
The Truman Show is one of my all-time favorite movies. I was lucky enough to watch it in the theaters as a teenager. The fact that Jim Carrey and the movie got snubbed for Best Actor and Best Picture is still ridiculous to me. It seemed like just science fiction back then, but with the way technology has progressed, a scaled-down version of this could absolutely happen. It portrays a special kind of paranoia. It makes you want to question your surroundings; how much of what we think is reality is actually real? Are you being watched? Is your family even your family? What "truths" you know are actually lies? Truman's gradual process of noticing things and slowly breaking it all down is always fun to watch. There are lots of little details that you'll only catch on multiple rewatches, like the "You Are Now Leaving Seahaven Island! Are You Sure It's A Good Idea?" sign just before he drives across the bridge.
The production is really interesting; several things were changed between script drafts. One of the early scripts was much darker, with the fake setting being in New York, the escape being longer and more violent, including Truman shooting down a helicopter, going through the exit door and sneaking out of the studio lot, holding a flare gun to a tour guide's head, and an in-person confrontation Christof. The sentence, "You never had a camera in my head" was always there, but it was in a darker context; originally, Truman said it as he was about to throw himself and Christof from the top of a building. In the movie's official companion book, it's revealed that the guy in the bathtub died when his TV fell in the water. The Nick At Nite promotional featurette reveals that Marlon drinks all the time as a coping mechanism for what his life has become. You should check out the deleted scenes, too; one shows that Marlon actually found Truman during the search at the end, but deliberately let him escape. Regardless, there's no way the show would've lasted; the actors are terrible at improvising under unpredictable conditions, and Truman's natural curiosity was going to win out over fear in the long run. It's a great message about embracing one's nature, not denying it, taking risks, and seeking truth. And yeah, that's one of the best endings I've ever seen.

Peter Weir is a brilliant director. In addition to the movies listed by other commenters, I think you should watch "The Year of Living Dangerously." a romantic drama set during civil unrest in Indonesia in the 1960s. It stars a young Mel Gibson, a young Sigourney Weaver, and an Oscar winning performance by Linda Hunt, who won best actress though she was playing a man.
Fun facts
1. The Trumania bit where Truman draws on the mirror with soap and acts strange was completely improvised by Jim Carrey. In another take he drew long curly hair and a dress.
2. In an early scene a bottle of vitamin D is on Truman and Meryl's kitchen table needed for those without exposure to the (real) sun.
3. The original script was darker and had crucial differences from the shooting draft. The city was not a utopian society but there were staged criminal incidents and Truman had a drinking problem it is stated clearly that Truman makes love to his wife (whose real name is Hannah). Christof's intention was for Truman to have Meryl impregnated and the child would carry on the show there were more clues that help Truman realize the truth. The scene where Truman confronts Meryl was far more aggressive and finally most importantly after Truman passes the door he meets Christof and the main cast members on a rooftop while in the film the story ends with Truman's exit from the fake world. In the encounter at the rooftop which was in the script the actors stare at him sheepishly but Truman in his rage attacks Christof and tries to strangle him but the rest of the actors hold him back and he is finally reunited with Sylvia.
4. Truman's spy ring actually comes from his father. He caught it just before his father "drowned" and has worn it since that trauma. He gives it back to him when they meet again. This is why they struggle to find Truman when he escapes at the end of the movie.
5. Several deleted scenes make it clear that Louis (Marlon) truly does care about Truman and gives him a moment of redemption where he finds him during the search and lets him go.
6. There is a dark deleted scene reveals that had Truman not realized what was going on Christof and network execs were going to broadcast the main show and its spin-off on a two-channel format the main show following Truman and the spin-off following his unborn child repeating the cycle all over again. New actress who will play Trumam new wife is committed to getting pregnant for the show and to boost up her career. Marlon asks Christof when Truman dies they'll just go back to one show which Christof doesn't answer and you can see Marlon reaction goes from anger at Christof sadness for Truman and acceptance he can't do nothing about it.
7. The boat Truman sails on at the end of the movie is named the Santa Maria the same name of one of Christopher Columbus' ships when sailing to eventually find a new world.
8. The (fake) opening credits for the movie announce that it is "Day 10,909" for the show. That means that Truman is just 48 days short of his 30th birthday. Two days later (day 10,911) an extra reads a newspaper dated Friday, December 13. This places the film in 1996 and therefore Truman's birthday must have been Sunday 29th January 1967. A "30th Anniversary" Truman Show commemorative plate can be seen hanging in the bar and the interview with Christof celebrates the show's thirtieth year. Truman escapes under the bright midday sun in the early hours of December 16, 1996, Day 10,914 of The Truman Show.
9. Although not a Pixar movie there is a reference to Room A113 during the opening montage of Michael Michaelson's interview with Christof (after Truman's meltdown and reunion with his father). There is a zoom-in to a bank of monitors specifically to the one labeled A-0114 which naturally is right beside the one labeled A-0113. Another zoom-in some minutes later shows the same group of monitors with Christof's image.
10. When Truman reunites with his "father" and sobs he isn't crying tears of joy. He's crying because he realizes that even the people he was closest to (Meryl, Marlon, and now the man he thought was his father) were lying to him and his whole life was a sham. In many ways this is the catalyst that finally pushes Truman to escape his fabricated reality and reunite with his true love Sylvia.
11. At about 1:28 in the movie as Christof has just finished trying to drown Truman and he is recovering on the boat the shot turns to a wide angle of Christof's set. In the lower left of the screen a man is wearing a shirt that says "Love Him Protect Him" which is precisely the opposite of what Christof has been doing.

It's a philosophical masterpiece with a lot of drama and comedy interlaced throughout it.

Reality TV taken to its logical, entirely messed up conclusion. As you say, with 24 hour Twitch streamers, we're almost at this kind of situation. It's wonderfully messed up and more than a bit dystopian as you say.
"the truman show" IS a dystopian film. and like ALL other warnings over the centuries that warned humanity of its dystopian future, of its present-day dystopian, police-state reality, it's warnings were completely ignored.
the film warned us of the "surveillance society" which is now a reality. it warned us of the FRAUD of "reality tv" which wasn't a thing yet. it warned us of the propensity of the fascist state to create FALSE realities, redefinition of words and replacing truth with lies. it also warned of how the general PUBLIC would accept, embrace and even participate in this mass fraud applauding their own manipulation by mass media. now, mass media has been replaced by so-called "social media" where the truth and reality go to die.
and yet, HERE WE ARE! in a police-state that few recognize and most ADMIRE! the most important thing this film showed is just how gullible and easily manipulated humanity really is.
NEXT WATCH "Colossus: The Forbin Project" (1970) which warned us the dangers of computerization, digitization, automation and A. I. that was also completely ignored.
At least modern streamers are in control of the content they put out and get part of the profits.

What the most intriguing aspect to me was, the show’s creator (Ed Harris) seemed so adamant that what he was doing was transcendent and good, that it was what was best for Truman.
