The summer of 1989 was great: Batman, Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, Lethal Weapon 2, The Abyss, James Bond in Licence To Kill, and Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, Ghostbusters II, Back To The Future II, and more!
And Back to the Future 2, Karate Kid 3 (I still liked it), Weekend at Bernie's, Hear No Evil See No Evil, Best of the Best, The Little Mermaid, Dead Poets Society, Roadhouse, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Glory, Christmas Vacation, Field of Dreams, Major League, and I guess Star Trek 5. 1989 was a fantastic movie year!
Lean on Me. The Morgan Freeman movie where he plays the high school principal! And License to Kill, mentioned above, is my favorite James Bond movie. It's one of the few that actually have a plot. Not just a bunch of car chases and fistfights until the run time is over.
There is also Loaded Weapon which is a spoof on the first three Lethal Weapon films. It was made in 1993 and stars Emilio Estevez and Samuel L Jackson.
Roger has a wife and kids through all the movies, but the Lethal Weapon films are very good keeping the existing cast and adding new interesting characters to the LW family.
Lethal Weapon 3 and 4 will not disappoint. Another character is introduced in part 3 and in part 4. Easily one of my favorite series. The sequels are all action packed.
Yep. First time I heard kaffir was when the color of friendship first came out on Disney Channel back in the day. My dad and cousins explained it to me.
@@slanetroyard92can’t remember the first time I heard it, my whole family used it all the time when I was growing up, it was just an acceptable term amongst whites.
@25:44 No matter what anyone thinks or says about Leo, he kept his mouth shut even after getting brutally assaulted. He wouldn’t betray his new-found friends.
There's a lot of action-comedy out there, but the heart and friendship is what makes this series special. I always tear up a little when Leo hugs them after they save him. 😭
Small fact, the female cop with the curly hair that was eventually blown up on the diving board was also Vasquez in Aliens, and John's foster mother in Terminator 2
I love the Lethal Weapon movies. I really like Riggs's since of humor. The thing I like most about these shows is how (in the beginning) Riggs started out suicidal but being partnered with Roger saved his life thanks to the friendship/relationships he formed with Roger and his family. They accepted Riggs as family and they all formed such strong bonds with each other. Please watch the next two Lethal Weapon Movies.
LA here. It's exactly like your news clip depicts. Car chases are so common, we watch them like spectator sports on TV at my local bar. Everybody gets into it!
Love all the lethal weapons movies. They all have the magic. Hope you watch all 4 of them merry cherry 🍒 where the content may vary. It’s a great journey of growth with the characters
Fun Fact: even tho there were no plans for a sequel during the making of Lethal Weapon 1, they hinted at the Apartheid in the first film. When Mr. Joshua breaks into Murtaugh's home and he's entering the kitchen, if you pause you'll see a sticker on the fridge that reads "End the Apartheid".
Patsy Kensit who plays Rika was a pretty famous singer in the band Eighth Wonder back in the days. She had some nice hits in the 80s. Sad to see her demise in this movie.
I love that Riggs and Trish had a moment together when he talking about the gold pen. It shows that he is becoming a part of the Murtaugh family by opening up to her
When the movie first came out in '89, there was a half-hour special on HBO tied to this that thankfully, some fans have uploaded here on YT, which was parodying the typical "behind-the-scenes" documentary about the making of a film. For example, in an opening scene, Mel is in his trailer tying his sneakers and a lace breaks, so he goes to an executive's office to complain about being provided "quitter" laces on his shoes, and suddenly Chevy Chase barges in complaining about having "quitter" laces as well. Lots of blackout gags and surprise cameos within. In a later ironic turn, when Mel had his relapse and the tirade to the police that followed, when "LAW & ORDER" did an episode modeled on the incident, Chevy Chase played his surrogate character.
I believe I read that the original ending was that Riggs would actually die at the end in Murtaugh's arms, but they changed it and the voice-over was done later of them joking and us knowing he was going to be ok.
That blonde lady is Patsy Kensit, she was married to Liam Gallagher of Oasis for many years but she was quite a known actress in the UK, this was her only major film though.
Not sure if Mary Cherry reads You Tube comments...but if she does doesn't finish the series. I cannot go on. If she does finish the series, I will be a Patreon for life.
I live in the Los Angeles area and I have never seen police shootouts or cars turning over, explosions or anything out of the ordinary. I'd hear about police chases happening in LA on the local evening news. The Hollywood movie chases are much more spectacular. The hospital I worked at hired a bunch of English nurses and, what they expected was exactly what you're experiencing: constant police car chases with gunfire, explosions, cars flipping over and so forth. And they came anyway. They were pleasantly surprised at how nice and calm it really is. Of course, in some parts of town, it could be more exciting, but not where I (or they) lived.
One of the plot points that a lot of people don’t realize is that during this period of time possession of krugerrands in the United States was illegal. They were solid gold and were used to distribute the gold from South Africa so they could buy things in the world market. The countries that opposed apartheid refused to accept them so South Africa was embargoed without really being embargoed. That is why the discussion about keeping one for a souvenir was in the movie.
What's a bit ironic about the era in which this was filmed: I worked for a major airline's cargo department when this was released, and I pretty much ran the import section, in Los Angeles, and we frequently flew in diplomatic mail bags for the South African Consulate. There were a couple of instances when their bags came in, and we didn't receive copies of the airwaybill for them, which would prevent them from clearing U.S. Customs. I was able to "generate" copies for them, so that they could pick them up. Keep in mind, this was pre-President Mandela, pre-Internet, and pre-Windows-anything like what we have today. (I won't say how I did it, but it worked!) I ended up becoming their best friend after that, and every year at Christmas time from that point forward, they'd bring in a basket of goodies for the export office, one for the sales office - and a third one for me, specifically, by name. Punchline is, I'm half black! That used to make everybody in the office shake their heads, and laugh, when they'd think about it.
Hi Mary!🙂Rigg's love interest is Patsy Kensit. She was the lead singer in the pop 80s band, Eighth Wonder. She also did some commercials before acting. You really get to hate these South African Embassy guys and want them dead. South Africa could revoke their immunity for being involved in crimes. Joe Pesci adds some great humor to this one. Such a great scene during the toilet bomb when Roger tells Riggs he loves him without knowing how to say it. They had been through quite a bit with the abduction of his oldest daughter in the first film. An unspoken brotherhood that can only be shared by them.
When you re-watch, just before they throw Riggs into the water Pieter Vorstedt says "Don't have much luck with women, do you, Riggs?", Pieter intended Riggs to see RIka dead as he was drowning.
This is one of those movies where I say if you can't choose between the first or the second being better just count them as one big movie. That makes you always right❤
Enjoyed your reaction to this wonderful sequel. I hope you continue onwards with films three and four (in which both, besides being worthy of the series, continues the story).
it is actually really great that you share your reaction with people. i just love to experience people experiencing movies that are as great as those. thanks!
Looking forward to LW 3, it's the best of the 4. I knew the South African accent because in high school we had a foreign exchange student from Zimbabwe. At first, we were surprised she was white, and very pleased she was gorgeous.
The 1st one was excellent, but I think this one was even better, which is saying a lot. Loved the reaction Mary, such a beautiful heart you have, I admire that very much.
I've seen this movie at least ten times and to this day when Leo goes into his rant about the drive-through it still puts me in a fit of giggles every time.
Ok, Ok, Ok I'm so happy you reacted to LW2! This my favorite of all the series. I hope you continue with the next LW3 & LW4! Luv ya MC❤ 💛 PS Watch: Invictus with Matt Damon.
Another really great reaction. Thanks! Always fun to see Lola make an appearance! 🐈Pesci and Glover made another movie together after this called, "Gone Fishin'". Not the best movie, really, but it showed that they really must have enjoyed working together in this one.
So excited when I saw you were watching this! Agree with what you said about all the fantastic things about Lethal Weapon one and two. They made movie magic with Leo’s character. Start of the movie “this guy is SO ANNOYING!” Middle of the movie “I love this guy”. End of the movie, everyone hugs “Awww.” Agree with others that 3 and 4 are super strong sequels, one of the few series that didn’t go downhill while being milked. They just collect more found family, more people to care about and protect each other. The fourth one wisely and gracefully plays into Riggs and Murtagh getting older now, and not being the physical equals of the bad guys. It’s something to joke about, something that must be worked around, the film just makes the actors’ aging work, while ending on a super wholesome, happy high note.
The word 'Kaffir' is essentially the n-word. White South Africa had a long histroy of horrendous racism. Fortunately, the current generation seems to be taking a much more enlightened attitude (not everyone, obviously, but broadly speaking). Rika is played by Patsy Kensit, a British model and soap opera actor. Being Australian you probably saw her popping up in British media imports, in the same way we are familiar with your actors.
Love the LW movies. Keep going Mary. Now that you've seen this one you can watch Maverick (not the Top Gun movie, the Mel Gibson movie). I also recommend a spoof of the LW movies called Loaded Weapon.
13:59 I learned from my mom that when you go somewhere for food and use the drive thru you always check that your order is correct. I even do that when I go inside to pick up or order in person and pickup.
I think Mary would like Silverado. Great adventurous western movie. Danny Glover, Kevin Costner, Kevin Cline, Scott Glenn, Jeff Goldblum. So many stars! 80s. Just a fun movie.
Lethal Weapon is one of rare franchises that lots of people say does NOT goes worse with sequels. But lots of people does say that has one of darkest scenes in whole four films (on same even worse level then torture scenes in first one) when Rigs sees Ricas body, because it is totally TOTALLY unexpected. You are aware she is in danger but you just seen her taken and expect her to be used as "hostage scenario" then suddenly you just see her dead. Also in all four movies all crew is same (even Murthaugh kids) you will just see some new characters introduced Leo and one character from next two are two of mine favorite characters in all four movies....
It was even a last minute script change. Originally they intended Riggs to save Rika, but then decided against the common trope - and made some movie history that way.
I got welled up when Rika died. She was innocent, sweet and just wanted to be happy with Riggs. Deep down I knew she was in trouble. And having Joe Pesci in this movie was a great idea. Sometimes adding a third main character to an established team doesn't work but not in this case. I liked your commentary at the end. You are well informed.
As much as I love the first one, I feel like this one was even better. The characters were really fleshed out more, the final confrontation seemed more stacked against our hero’s versus Riggs taking on Mr. Joshua with half the LAPD on Murtaugh’s front lawn. The stakes just seemed higher and also, we get to meet the folks that killed Riggs’ wife. It also balanced comedy with action. Could you imagine if Joe Pesci’s character was stuck in Goodfellas/ Casino mode. That would be quite intense:)

Rika is played by Patsy Kensit, a British model and soap opera actor. Being Australian you probably saw her popping up in British media imports, in the same way we are familiar with your actors.
Oh man, listening to your post reaction. You’re going to love 3 and 4.
20:39 . Nail them both 😂 . I remember as kid watching this with my family we busted out laughing 😂
The great chemistry between Mel Gibson and Danny Glover is really what makes these movies and makes them great!
Number 2 is my least fave LW but I loooove 3 and 4. Hope you will love them too ❤
Really hope you do all the Lethal Weapon movies 🤞
She's some two dimensional character they cook up and kill off in the same act. Lethal Weapon's sequels are nowhere near as good as the original.

Either this or the third is my favourite of the series, but they're all really great. Happy Weekend Mary, and Cheers from Canada. 🥃👍✌❤
Because of Rudd
Keep going...all 4 are worth the watch.
Lethal Weapon is one of those rare movie series where it´s worth watching all of them.
I can't wait for Mary to watch Lethal Weapon 5, 6, & 7!
Goddamn it! Those junior detectives and their heroically reckless ways!
