    Lyrics:
I wasn't starting yet, I didn't even think you were listening
I wasn't ready at all to say anything about anything interesting
It's a thing you have, you just don't know that you do it
You wait around in a conversation while I get in and start stumbling through it
    I was so distracted then
I didn't have it straight in my head
I didn't have my face on yet
Or the role or the feel of where I was going with it all
I was suffering more than I let on
The tropic morning news was on
    There's nothing stopping me now
From saying all the painful parts out loud
Got to my feet feeling that I'd let you down
Wanted to say it slow and perfect but it all somehow got switched around
Something went off on its own, my dumb automatic chit chat
It's not what I meant to say at all, there's no way you can attach me to that
Got up to seize the day
With my head in my hands feeling strange
When all my thinking got mangled
And I caught myself talking myself off the ceiling
I was suffering more than I let on
The tropic morning news was on
    There's nothing stopping me now
From saying all the painful parts out loud
Oh, where are all the moments we'd have?
Oh, where's the brain we shared?
Something somehow has you rapidly improving
Oh, what happened to the wavelength we were on?
    Oh, where's the gravity gone?
Something somehow has you rapidly improving
You found the ache in my argument
You couldn't wait to get out of it
You found the slush in my sentiment
You made it sound so intelligent
You can stop and start an athlete's heart
How do I feel about it?
I would love to have nothing to do with it
I would like to move on and be through with it
I'll be over here lying near the ocean making ocean sounds
Let me know if you can come over and work the controls for a while
    I was so distracted then
I didn't have it straight in my head
I didn't have my face on yet
Or the role or the feel of where I was going with it all
I was suffering more than I let on
The tropic morning news was on
    There's nothing stopping me now
From saying all the painful parts out loud
Oh, where are all the moments we'd have?
Oh, where's the brain we shared?
Something somehow has you rapidly improving
Oh, what happened to the wavelength we were on?

You know how it works: you enjoy this because you're happy and you need a little dose of nostalgic sadness, or you're sad and you need a little bit of joyful nostalgia. Or you just simply want to feel deeper. The National is always there.

@dionpryor369 I’m not sure if you are trying to be funny or trolling, but...no. For a lot of us there are neurological reasons for this sort of thing. Imagine you suffered from debilitating migraines, but if you ever mentioned it you got told you were such a whiner. The headache is in your head right? Must be your attitude. Get over yourself.
It does not necessarily work that way.

I've been dealing with depression for some years now (my theme song for 2018 was "Demons"), and last year a nearby show that had been cancelled in 2020 got rescheduled, and we finally got to see The National live. Love this song. Will say though that the lyrics are coming from an anxious-avoidant attachment style. Makes me think of my ex and how no matter what we try to help create a safe environment, we are never enough for them - ask for their needs, they still run away without giving it a chance. If only love was not scary for them. Wish it was enough. Takes trust, communication, and compromise. Rest well my heart. Rest well. Thank you for a wonderfully timely song

Yeah, I heard that too. One of the things that I appreciate about The National is that their lyrics really speak to neurodivergence. Dysautonomia sucks. I do what I can to manage myself, but it never really goes away. Sure wish it would.

Sorry guys, I know how sensitive fans can be, but this is the best song by these guys ever. It´s one of those songs, you hear, you listen to and the world stops. For a few minutes there´s only the song and your feelings and nothing else.

*The Tonight Show brought me straight here!*
AMAZING BEAT, sound, vocals! Reminds me of finding an 80’s lost gem song that you haven’t heard SINCE the 80s and you get that same nostalgic feeling when listening to them. A mixture of Ice House, Van Halen, Oingo Boingo, The Tubes, M. Ward, R.E.M, Love Spit Love… you get the point!😂🤣👌🏻

It's great that The National gave a new platform to the rising stars in their last album, but I think every The National fan wanted more of them. I kept thinking, "it would have been amazing to have the authentic The National sound with some well-known guests (Bon Iver, Sufjan, Phoebe, etc.). And guess what? They did exactly that!

Phoebe Bridgers was an inspired choice. I'll be shocked if her vibe and voice don't fit hand-in-glove with the band.

I appreciate them showing some live clips during the instrumental
sections, considering this was one of several new songs we heard them play live last summer!
ETA: I just watched this on a larger screen, and took in the lyrics. They are pretty darned relatable from an Asperger's/ASD perspective.

Absolutely beautiful. Love this and have been playing it on repeat since I first heard it. Got into The National only in the last couple of years and it’s music that really connect with me. Something about this song reminds me of the genius of the Pet Shop Boys who are also masters of marrying melancholy with beautiful pop melodies.
